  • 4 Car Safety Features That Aren't Safe...! Oh sweet Handbrake, how I miss you dearly. I never understood why this very simple and cheap mechanism had to be replaced by the dumbest thing ever, that probably is infinitely harder to fix when it does break. Probably planned obsolescence, I dunno. Lane Keep Assist...Sometimes these drive you TOWARDS the trouble, even keeping you out of lane, as it freaks out over Rumble Strips (Honda Moment). What frustrates me more about really any new tech feature, not just this one specifically, is when the car FORCES you to drive with them on. Like there is no disable feature in the Menu, on the Steering Wheel, or whatever.
    Also I will NEVER forgive the US government for saying Pop-Up Headlights were too sharp to pass Pedestrian Safety, but then proceed to let the abomination that is the Tesla Cybertruck onto the road just fine.

    The part that scares me the most about all these safety features?
    I know people who think that having all of these “safety” features means that they don’t have to pay as much attention to the road as they used to.
    Big truck/SUV, big ass tablet replacing all the knobs, poor visibility because of how high you sit up, and the over confidence these cars offer have turned your average inexperienced or dumb driver into 6 ton death missiles on the road.

      The car SLAMMED the brakes. The auto system saw a shadow.
      Nearly got creamed in the back. It wouldn't respond to any attempts at manual control for a good heart attack period before I finally got it to let me speed up (there was no shoulder anyways).

      I wonder what the 'rest of the story' is. I have the same feature on my Honda Pilot - and if you are steering out of the lane your control input overrides the lane keeping input. I get a slight jerk (the same as I would get if I were straying out of the lane) but it isn't enough to override your steering.
      If lane keeping assist were that aggressive then it would be impossible to make a lane change without turning your turn signals on first.
      In fact, per the manual what the author of the video claims is pretty much impossible. The system will not activate under a list of conditions. One of them is: "The vehicle is not accelerating or braking, and the steering wheel is not being turned."

    What a lot of people don't talk about in terms of safety in a vehicle is honestly Interior layout.
    While not really a safety "Feature", it's certainly a safety hazard when most of your vehicle's controls and accessories are operated through a touch screen now, some of which requires going through layers of windows and tabs just to reach specific features just to toggle on or off, which is keeping your eyes off the road for a dangerous amount of time, especially if the screen stretches over past the middle of the dash.

      absolutely! In my previous car, with driving experience I had memorised every basic function and it's buttons. There was not a need to take my eyes off the road even for a second. Be it climate controls, radio, bluetooth.
      In the new car, half of this is in a touchscreen tablet and rest are in very sleek buttons which cannot be memorised. You can't even differentiate b/w them if you're running your finger across them without looking... useless.

    • @BogeyTheBear
      @BogeyTheBear День тому

      There's a difference between simplicity and minimalism. Burying everything in a single touchscreen is minimalist, not simple.
      Minimalism is when you reduce the amount of tools needed to do a job, while simplicity is where you reduce the number of _steps._ Having one multi-purpose tool in the form a screen means you have to take multiple steps in order to reconfigure that tool to do the job. It adds steps, which destroys simplicity.

I got to drive my family member's lifted 2022 Suburban and I immediately thought I was blind. The hood was too high, even with the seat at its highest position, the mirrors were half reflection - half bezel, and the brake felt like it wasn't working until the car was actually stopped. Something I find funny about hand brakes is so many people refuse to use them because "what if they fail", the only times I've seen handbrakes fail is when the hinges are so rusted from only being used once a year during an MOT test that they either no longer move at all, or get stuck in the open position so now it's just on permanently. So if you never use your parking brake ever it will probably fail on you if you ever have to use it as an emergency brake.
    And yes I do know a parking brake can fail when used as intended, but people are just too afraid of the what if scenario. The odds of your car getting hit while parked are much higher than the parking brake failing, doesn't mean you're never going to park anywhere other than a highly secure private garage

      Funny you should mention that I moved my Grandmas car for her once and she was suprised I put the parking brake on its one of the cable ones where you pull the lever Mercedes C class she said she never puts it on and I told she should because its very common for an automatic to fail for parking brakes being below efficency requirements on MOT tests because of lack of use I checked and her car had failed for it once as do many autos. Can't stand lame assist that takes control of the car. Same with collision avoidance assistance.
    Was in a rental car that had those once. Guy was at a stop sign and obviously couldn't see the intersection so started slow pulling up so they could see. Collision Avoidance thought he was going to pull out apparently, so jerked us into the oncoming traffic lane where there was a car very close. Thankfully I was able to jerk the car back into my lane before getting into an accident but it was extremely close.

      That's total cap. You can in fact pull the electronic e-brake while driving. It's going to use information from the ABS/ESP module to avoid that the wheels lock up. You just need to pull the lever for multiple seconds. I tried it on my car and It works. If you have a Mercedes long press on the P button, if it's a normal (P) Button just pull and hold for multiple seconds and it will apply it. I've done it out of curiousity on an empty road and it applied the E-brake as long as I pulled on the (P) button. That's what you get when people don't read their owner's manual. There are certain criteria for that, but in most cases it's easy. I have seen a lot of (I can only assume) US imported cars that had the design for a US license plate and had EU-style license plates in the shape of US license plates. As for the wipers, there's a little 4-position switch on top of the wiper stalk that you can move left or right to adjust the sensitivity (low to high). If you don't want them to wipe at all, you can just move the stalk back to its standby position like in any other car.

Systems like what GM has can actually tell the difference between the driver turning the wheel and natural drift of the vehicle and won't interfere if it determines that you're turning the wheel. Then people stop at the middle of a roundabout, or stop before entering when there's no traffic entering, not using turn signals in roundabouts. Finally , there's a long line of traffic on a light intersection. It turns green and everyone is on their phones so about 30 seconds later, if you're down the line you only move up a few meters at most, waiting for the next piece of the line to cross the light when everyone could* have been off the brakes at the same time and you could have already passed the light since the 30 seconds green light actually feels like 3 seconds of movement.

    0:35 - If your car has no traction, it's not because the brakes failed, it's because your tires aren't gripping the surface. Hitting the e-brake would make things worse because you would be bypassing ABS and ESC, so when you do finally get some traction, you'll probably just end up skidding out of control rather than coming to a controlled stop. I do agree though that it is better to have an actual physical e-brake actuation mechanism; Whether it be a lever or pedal doesn't really matter.

    I’d argue that chunky a, b, & c pillars on top of high belt ones are the most unsafe features of any car or vehicle. You want to know why? It increases blindspots which conceals entire vehicles and pedestrians which is fatal in some cases. I’d argue that aerodynamic styling doesn’t help much either since the hood slopes down into the abyss and is hard to see how far or close you are to something. Which a ‘66 Ford Galaxie 500 I looked at last spring, the hood was about 6’ long but since it stuck straight out and had somewhat of a blunt shape to it, was easy to see how far or close I was to something when I test drove it. Some people will argue about how older vehicles are dangerous and modern vehicles are safer and so forth, but when you really think about it, it’s all relative. While cars from the late 50’s and through the 60’s didn’t have any safety equipment other than seatbelts which were mandatory in 1966 along with collapsable steering columns in 1967 along with dual circuit braking, more than made up for it in the excellent visibility there was to the outside.

You talk about the blunt shape hood you can see perfectly and I take your point however its a double edged sword landing on that hood would be far more painful than one of the modern sloped hoods with no sharp edges. I miss my first car as the visibility was insane but the car I have no is so much safer for me and others my current car is harder to park as you can't see where either end of the car ends but its easy enough for someone like me in my first car I could to within 1ft of everything easily no sensors or cameras just brilliant visibility.

      It could be easier to access there, but it's possible to design an interior where it's a normal hand brake and it's super easy to access, so that's a fail on whatever designer needed to use the foot-type in order to make their interior work 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The amount of unnecessary changes automakers are making to their cars is insane, just removing safety features, making their cars bigger, etc. Plus the fact that the government lets these cars on the road is insane, like you said at 13:16 I think they are also picking favorites. Its wild to think that I could be driving in the middle of the day and get blinded by the person's lights behind me and get plowed into with an SUV with a brick wall for a grill and somehow pop up headlights are worse? Am I the only one that thinks it’s a bad idea to use the hand brake(that isn’t connected to the ABS) instead of the brake (which is connected to the ABS). I don’t know about you but I like to… you know, have grip
    I am sick and tired of people thinking a literal cable is better than ABS. It also has a high chance of locking the rear wheels which makes you slide.
    That’s probably why most countries teach new drivers to use the foot brake as it is safer.
    It’s not an E-brake it’s a park brake no more, no less

    • @TopiasSalakka
      @TopiasSalakka 11 днів тому +2

      It's also extremely unlikely to lose your entire foot brake, because we've had redundant brake design for decades.
      If you pop a brake line, you'll notice it but you'll still be able to brake with half of your wheels.

    • @asificam1
      @asificam1 День тому

      Yeah and ABS will work on all 4 wheels... but should something fail... it's nice to have a backup, even if the backup has limited capacity. I sometimes have to drive a truck with tons of weight loaded onto it... but the hydraulic brakes have a leak in the master cylinder, so it only has a brief period of braking before you have to pump the pedal. Luckily, the engine braking on an old manual truck is absolutely insane and has as much stopping power as most cars do... I know because someone brake checked me down to a near stop and I was able to stop the truck with the engine and only used the brakes for the last little bit as the engine began to idle. So for cars that are not yours where you do not know the condition of the car, it is nice to have a hand brake just in case... plus, unlike an e brake pedal (which I hate), a lever can be pulled by hand instead of by foot and also by the passenger if say the driver passes out. Redundancy is nice when there is essentially no cost to it.
      In general, you should not use the e brake lever other than for parking. But, it is much nicer than a 4th foot pedal (or 3rd pedal in an automatic) which you can see is up and will work should something go horribly wrong in the hydraulic system. People do not maintain their cars, they treat them like disposable appliances and this causes lots of premature failures, thankfully, most of these are the engine or transmission dying rather than the brakes failing or a wheel falling off... though those do happen. But having another redundancy that doubles as a parking brake is amazing. They call it the emergency brake because it should only be used as a last resort when all else fails... frankly, I think in a manual car, the engine braking might be more powerful than the e brake if you drive something with more engine displacement and lower gears than my personal boring car... but manuals are hard to find and I'd rather have a system that is functions differently so that I have a backup... but it's *just* a backup and a parking brake.
      Also, bold of you to assume everyone has ABS, almost every car I drive that I don't personally own has either faulty ABS which actively screws things up, an old ABS which is not even as good as a human alone, an ABS which has silently failed, or no ABS (I think, it doesn't have an ABS light on but there is no ABS so either the brake master cylinder is that leaky or it never had ABS). Personally, everything I own, vehicle or otherwise is well maintained, but this is not the case for most people. I've seen some pretty scary stuff... and I'm not even a mechanic... those mechanics I talk with... they have some horror stories.

    1) The cause is probably number of forgotten engaged E-Brakes starting fires, the electronic brake can disengage itself, the mechanical can not.
    2) The problem is in vagueness of required implementation, if you say to car makers "you need to keep the car between white lanes" do not expect them to go the extra of including anything above like temporary yellow lanes and others, they will do required minimum, the need to have the nice extras for luxury cars.
    3) Nobody ever banned pop-up headlights, they just need to pass the tests and the car makers are just like "CBA" while moaning about regulations.
    Also "Right on red" is far more dangerous then pop-up headlights so you better get rid of that first.
    4) Only if the weight is on different classes, this was "true" when most cars were sedans, now you need MRAP to outclass SUV, or Semi.
