      Reminds me of when i kept up with a 911 in the Twisties in my uncle's Felicia pickup with 1/5 the power tops and 0 regard for my safety. When it was kinda straight he'd pull away, but at every slow corner I'd be right back on him. The way back down wasn't as fun because i was stuck behind a guy who never went above my engine brake speed in second gear. I discovered the car had a 5th gear before that tho while going 140 km/h.

    • @johnhunter7244

      @@GTAmaniac1 was it safe to be pushing the limits of your vehicle? The 911 driver was almost certainly safer than you. More grip available and sing less of it and more time available to react on the turns. It's not all about the straight or corner speed.

    • @GTAmaniac1
      @GTAmaniac1 Рік тому +19

      @@johnhunter7244 @John Hunter the car i was driving had no functional seatbelts, ofc the 911 was being more safe, but i doubt he had more grip available due to my car being half the weight and still being on some sticky tires. Plus we had the same time available to react on the turns, i was never more than half a car width in the opposing lane without knowing with absolute certainty what's in the next 2 corners. Could i have been safer? Definitely, but that's not the point of spirited driving, the point is having fun while still being able to account for most unforseen situations, which i was doing. Plus i was under the speed limit most of the time because 60 hp ain't much.

While yes, it was fast, It outperformed me. I nearly slammed it straight into a tree. It doesn't matter if your car has 3000 horsepower, if you can't contain it, it's not the car for you.. What's even better yet is a vehicle with tons of aftermarket support, then you can restore it, make it new again, make it what you want it to be, and in the end have a respectable vehicle that you can say you built yourself and earn bragging rights too.

    • @suprtroopr1028
      @suprtroopr1028 Рік тому +6

      And those are key points: experience, satisfaction, and an overall respect for your vehicle. Learning to enjoy, respect, and wrench on something affordable only makes you more competent and grateful when you have a car that has a bigger tag, IF you want one. But it's your call, and that's the real point. The point of being a car guy to me is that your car is YOUR car. You're passionate about what you drive and are willing to invest deeply into it, no matter what make, model, year, or trim. I miss to death my old Park Ave, and would've given anything to have the money, knowledge, and time to fix her back then. And having that thought was when I knew. Now, I'm getting into wrenching on my new store dasher, and it's never been more enjoyable for me to drive her, because it's my effort that's making her better.

      I’ve been to a driving course in summer and even they didn’t let us go at it it with the full-fat Focus RS right at the start, but we had to learn the course in a set of Fiestas. Normal ones, not even the ST variant.
      Now I am not saying to start off with a Peel P50, but something reasonably quick. Not a few hundred horsepower monster that will wrench your head off first chance it gets, but a responsive car more likely to train its driver.
      GT86 is the one I am personally dreaming about, but that is up to the individual.
      This also applies to any other kind of car. See if you like it stock, and improve it from there. Gradually increase power and driving characteristics.

    This is a great video. It is universally applicable. During the lockdown I stared getting into, of all things, sewing. I had a $70 entry entry level machine which worked fine for making masks. Then I tried making a denim equipment bag. It was like showing up to a tractor pull with an base model Kia Rio. The machine was trashed halfway through the project. I was THIS close to pulling the trigger on an $1800 machine from Japan. The things it could do! Wow! Then I thought to myself... after we are allowed out of our houses again, am I really going to continue this hobby? Ended up getting a $350 Singer Heavy Duty to get the job done. It is still more machine than I will ever need. The thing goes through denim as if it were tissue paper. Sure enough, since the lockdown ended I make about 3 or 4 bags a year and made one set of custom seat covers. I still need the machine, but I'm so glad I didn't trick myself into that $1800 import.

Either the pedals are too close or the steering wheel is too far away both at the same time no matter how you adjust the seat. It has no power anything, a carburetor, no computerized components, and can randomly implode at any moment with no warning. The rubber hoses are crumbling, and the window crank handles fall off. Do you just want to have the biggest power & torque figures and lowest 0 to 60 numbers available? They'll be outdated next year if so! Do you just want to look cool and feel envied by people you pass the street? Or do you REALLY just want to have insane amounts of fun and LYAO while driving?" The answer was obvious to me - I wanted the most fun I could have in a reliable and relatively inexpensive car. He suggested I buy a Mazda MX-5. I did and have ZERO regrets! I guess this depends on where you are... The MX-5 is a MEH deal in the U.S at best. Unless you are making a track car, it's likely more of a niche purchase at the price. Other vehicles around the same price offer similar, if not more performance with more usability as a daily driver. Especially how much some used ones go for as well. Really love your point about not only sticking within your budget but sticking within what you can handle and what you’ll actually need. As a photographer I’ll have a lot of friends who are trying to get into photography ask me about brand or camera they want and ask if it’s good and I always have to start out with asking what they want to do with the camera if they plan on editing the photos, or printing them, maybe doing photography as a side hustle and then I still have to ask them what their budget is and often times they only need a quarter of the camera. I’m constantly telling people they should only upgrade when their skills outmatch their tools otherwise they’ll get overwhelmed and drop it. It kills me that you see that everyone thinks they need the best that’s out there to start off well when they won’t see any return on investment over a beginners tool for like a year or more, and the fact that these venerable people are being prayed on by salesmen and companies makes me really sad and angry.

It's very hard to shift an open box product nowadays, due to stigmas, so instead of it being binned to make room for other stock and earning them nothing, they got 1200 for it. Another thing, people do not even know what performance is. Yeah an F1 car has amazing performance, but a tank from the 80's has more performance than the F1 car. All an F1 car needs to do is accelerate fast, break fast, turn while going fast, and well, go fast. A tank (from the 80's) needs to be durable, have a high turret acceleration and fast enough slew rate, have the gun and turret be stabilised and do that while bounding over rough terrain, the engine needs to be tough enough to take the stress of combat (which btw is more intense than racing where you keep it at revs more than not), the tank needs to see in the middle of the night, in pitch black conditions in the middle of bumbfuck nowhere AND also keep in communication with the other platoon members and/or leaders. The tank has to also be able to be comfortably reloaded if it is a manual. Even more things if an autoloader. And to top it off survive being shot at.
    Those listed, what's a higher performing vehicle? the F1 car or the tank? Dumb question, they are equally high performance in their respective field, on the track nothing, or not many things can beat an F1 car, off road EVERYTHING can beat an F1 car. Offroad nothing beats a tank, the churchill tank, an early WW2 tank, went up like a 85-95% gradient. i'D like to see an F1 car do that on a riverbed... well riverbank.

    I remember me and my dad had a talk about something similar to Future Proofing.
    Basically I told him which cars I'd like to own one day for fun drives. And when I said that I'm still picking which one I'll have, he said to me: "If you really want a car, then save money for it. But at the same time, buy something cheaper but good so you can still have some fun while you save for the car you really want. And once you know you'll have enough, you can sell the car you currently have and get the car you really want."
    He even told me that despite how much he likes his Super Seven, he's gonna sell it at some point for something else to have fun with.
    And I took this advice to heart because now that I think of it, it'll be better for me to get a cheap toy and have fun while I save for the actual toy I want, rather than save for the actual toy I want without having anything else to entertain me.

As my dad always says, back in my day you had lots of fun in a 96 v4 with 90hp. And today I think a 9-3 aero (210hp) is slow with a trailer hooked up.
    The absolutely brilliant thing about these old Saabs is that they are so light and have great handling. They sound fantastic and you have to push them all the time. The sense of speed is also much greater, so you can have a nice drive without risking your license.
    In my 9-5 aero with 310hp shit breaks and it's hard to diagnose, so it's never running great just ok or not at all. And I always end up going twice the limit everywhere and get paranoid about every car behind me being a undercover cop. Thus making it stressfull to drive.
    It's two completely different experiences, but the one with a 140km/h top speed might just be the better experience.

    As someone with a Scion tC as their first car (lets be real here it's a compact coupe/hatch) people really do tend to only like hp when it comes to cars. Everyone and their best friends uncle likes to say the tC is slow, which it is, don't get me wrong. But it is actually faster than the GT86 in a straight line but loses in corners, making it a nice option if you aren't too worried about having rwd, but again nobody appreciates car enthusiasts unless they have something over 500 hp its such a clout chasing trend atm it's sad.

    The second one really speaks to me lol. I drive a ‘98 Pontiac Sunfire and it’s got the original 2.2L 4 cylinder engine. It only puts up a little over 100hp and the ECM is programmed to only let her go 170 km/hr, (about 100mph). Since I live in a rural area, I’m always using that baby’s full potential, I know the engine is nothing special, but listening to her accelerate by flooring it on a complete open road gives my so much happiness.

      You can do a lot of mods to an ecotec 😊

      @@alexl9334 eco tech wasn’t used on the Sunfire until 2003. I do have dreams of turbocharging her someday though. As I’ve seen kits exist for the 95-02 model years.

      @@alexl9334 thanks for the advice, one kit I’ve seen is only $1500, which I think is pretty good, considering I’ve seen some more premium ones go for $8000+ on similar, but more popular cars.

    just 2 hours ago my friend was telling me that i needed to get the v8 mustang instead of the v6. and when we were talking about our favorite cars, he thought the cars i liked were weird just because they weren't as fast as the cars he likes (audis, ferraris, lamborghinis, etc.)
