Great video and great information, I use 22 for the likes of ratting but prefer the 177 rabbits and those longer shots. I was a 22 bloke for years and never gave the 177 a thought as I was like many who always said if your getting an air rifle get a 22 they’re much better more knock down power but how wrong I was, if you use the right pellet and the shot placement is correct the 177 has devastating results. There is a video on the field sports channel I believe showing what a 177 pellet is capable of and is definitely worth watching as the results are very surprising comparing both 22 and 177.
That's why I replaced all my .22's with .177's, both spring and PCP's, I still have one .22 but rarely shoot it.
Are these sub-12 rifles? If so, that's certainly a factor in the amount of drop.
So you are comparing 177 zero at 30yds and 22 at 25yds"" BUT"" using a different zero??? So all your measurements for comparison are wrong? ???
But it isn't the scope.
I think, the heavier pellets causes slightly more muzzle jump.
Just get a cheap golf range finder and use range stuckers on your elevation turret, stick out some targets at 5m intervals, range them ,and adjust your turret until you are on zero and stick a range sticker on and keep going out to 60m ,one all the stckers are on ,cover the turret ring with a clear tape to protect them ,if not and you can afford £600 get a range finding NV scope that adjusts your zero and you can film at the same time

I used to shot lots of vermin but always with spring powered or gas ram rifles. In N Ireland all air rifles had to be on a firearms certificate so we shot with higher powered rifles than GB legal limit rifles. It’s great to know your pellet/bullet trajectory but you should also be aware that different shooting positions will change your point of impact ie standing, kneeling, prone. It really helps to try those out as I regularly used all three positions and can’t actually remember taking a shot from a rested rifle when hunting.

Thankyou for a great, informative video and stating the importance of knowing where your Pellet will land at different distances. It's so important to have a clean, humane kill, as against needless wounding and suffering. I don't know if you know or not? My late, much loved, very very keen air rifle enthusiast father, told me of something called a Rook Rifle. I never saw one, though I would guess it would be similar to a four ten cartridge gun. Not sure whether single or double barrel.
In days gone by, where agriculture was much less mechanized, I think there was such a dish called Rook Pie. In those days where supermarkets weren't really invented, and you'd s!og in the field all day, I dare say those hard working, grafting folks would have been grateful for anything hot and Cooked placed in front of them. I don't think I fancy Rook Pie, though the ration books are thankfully, hopefully long gone. However, I also agree that you should always try and eat what you shoot, or feed it to something that will benefit. Don't just kill or wound for target practice. Thankyou. I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions.
Very good info! I already assumed that the .22 would have more drop, but doesn't the heavier weight give you a better punch? I need to get rid of some raccoon, and possum, and hope I can put them down quickly, with as little suffering as possible.
I think this changes between calibers when pushed to FAC levels. I believe reason being weight and drag. I can’t see hitting anything bigger than a sparrow past 50-60 yards with a .177 7.4 grain and with a .22 18.13 that’s 2Xs as heavy at the same speed has taken pigeons at 100. I understand your tests are at sub 12 levels and in that limit you are correct. The higher the speed the flatter the trajectory imo for the most part but the drag and weight are also a factor when covering longer distances. Speed matters.
FWIW, technically speaking, projectiles do not "rise and fall" upon leaving the barrel, they only fall.
But the barrel is pointing upwards, so the pellet rises then falls.

I've recently got back into shooting air rifles and shocked that things haven't really changed since I was a kid. I mean the best springer is probably the HW95 still which is what I had when it came out... Anyway, what I wantes to say was this. I've been shooting compound bow and trophy ridge make a sight, you zero it in at 20 and 30 yards and then from the drop the sight will workout all the other distances for you so you have perfect shooting at all distances, this sight costs peanuts really. Why haven't air rifles integrated this technology, they've been around a lot longer
Great video guys, I use both .177 and .22 , the trajectory does take some getting use to but thats half the fun, but now I use the .177 in daytime with the mtc viper pro and dial in the ranges which was fun sorting out in the field, and the .22 has the atn 4k pro on top configured with the all rangefinder and both make it much more easier...keep up the good videos another subby here. 👍

I have only been using .22 on my FX Impact and FX Streamline but looking to buy an Air Arms TX200 HC and was thinking of going .177 this time but wanted to know the difference in accuracy between the two calibers. Bang on about knowing your equipment. I have an 18yr old s200 and I always end up going back to it in the knowledge that if I shoot at something I'm hitting it, I still purchase the latest releases just to try them but after one trip out in the field they end up being target practice toys.
What is the energy though at the same range,,its more important to lnow,,the heavier slug will fall more but ???
I have a Falcon FN19 .177 and I love it, had it for years. Still hits true every time.
One little thing....177 is more affected by wind and all advantage over the .22 can be gone on windy day
177 is much faster so wind affects both calibers about the same. Time, surface area, drift... Math.

Great video thanks. My quarry is generally up in a tree. Your video is horizontal shooting. Have you done similar tests shooting upwards ?
If you shoot up or down hill, the effect is the same, the gun will shoot high as less affected by gravity. If you think about it, if you shot straight up in the air, the pellet would not drop at all in the way that it does if shooting horizontally..

You are over looking weight of pellet used in. 22 calibre remember lighter pellet trajectory is going to be much lower example 11gr 13 gr : and a lot of. 177 shooters use a heavier pellet 10.5 gr which gives better hitting power but trajectory is knocked off flat shooting so it's not all Rosie glasses for. 177 👍
It is at 20 ft/lbs, sold all my .22's replaced with .177's much happier now.
Please forgive me if I have missed something in your comment. It would seem if one has decided on the favorite pellet that your air rifle or pistol, whether .177 or .22, prefers by testing several different manufacturers, types, weights & sizes and have completed this exercise, you will have the trajectory information that you need to make proper corrections. Decided to start shooting the latest and greatest flavor of the day? Go through this exercise again to determine the different variables in the trajectory. Please let me know if there is something that I have not understood corrrectly. Thank you.
@Jeffrey Pursley The point I was trying to make simply , using a heavy pellet in .22 example 16gr it can produce a loopy trajectory , but example use a 13g and the trajectory is more or less flat , a 11gr RWS flat Head is even flatter shooting .
But using a heavy pellet example 10.5 gr can open the trajectory up, so it's safer to use a 7 or 8gr pellet for flatter trajectory, hope this helps
@@michaelbritain5546I have a 22 fpe .177 and I grab it more than any of my other 12 pcps. It loves 10 grain slugs and shoots like a laser. I realize that has little to do with this video, but it sure is fun.

Since we're not tied to 12fpe, we don't have this issue in the U.S. - we just up the power (and velocity) of the .22. Once they're gong the same speed, the BC differences, which are pretty trivial, are the only drop variable left.
I only realized after watching a few air rifle vids that in Britain they have imposed such low limits on fpe. That would be enough to make me move out of the country. We don’t know how lucky we are I guess. Support the NRA to preserve our rights.

I been shooting for over 45 year's Always .22 i tried a .177 about 7 year's ago .and switched still use the .22 for 5 to 30 yards but find the .177 is the best for hunting in my opinion the squirrels and pigeons get despatched cleanly out to 50 yards.

I guess the grain of pellet would effect the results. A heavier .177 pellet would drop more than what the .177 results here indicate.
And a lighter one wouldn't drop as much within reason.

You can't compare like for like with 2 different scope heights, also pointless exercise measuring without knowing the fps of both guns.. It's a shame because I was looking forward for the results.
I assume the FPE of both guns are equal. 177 goes much faster, same energy as slower, hevier ammo.
Having used both .177 and .22 I would have to say .22 wins my vote but then I know my gun and scope from 5 to 60 yards practice practice practice

Liked the information 'but' for hunting with a. 22 it's best to zero 28 yards that way the pellet will be in the kill zone out to 28 yards aim dead on no correction needed hold under beyond required / better than a 30 yard zero in my view 👍
Depends on the scope height above the center of the bore, especially on some of the more modern bullpup Air rifles 👍

The 12 ftp may be a limiting factor for isolated UK, but that is not necessary true for other countries!
You did not take into account following:
*Speed of projectiles
*weight of projectiles
*shape of projectiles
I shoot 6.35 cal jsb exact king pellets (25.4 gr) with a very flat trajectory over 50 mtr and more with a speed of 270 mtr / sec.
I shoot JSB king heavy 33.95 gr. with 250mts/sec with slightly more drop but still with a rather flat trajectory.
I Shoot .25 slugs around 290 mtr / sec with a flat trajectory up to 100 mtr distance.
For small game in open field I have very good results with the cal 6,35 jsb kings up to ~75 mtr distance. This pellet has enough speed and weight for accurate shot placement and ethical game dispatch.

What is the speed at the muzzle? The test is only good if they have the same speed.
Probably the UK's limit under 12ft lbs. So I'm guessing the .22 is around 570fps and the .177 at about 740fps depending on the weight of the pellets used.
Don't be ridiculous, .177 drops less BECAUSE it flys much faster, otherwise both would drop the same under gravity's acceleration...
Sir which must accurate in 50-60yards between .177 VS. 22cal?
I thought it would make bigger difference. I would call it a success if I could hit that 50yard board at all. Last time I tried hitting at all at 30 yards with cheap pellets, I couldn’t. They were too cheap😂It depends all on rifle, pellet and shooting position and experience. From that clip I’ve learned that it makes no difference for target shooting. You zero it and can shoot all day long. .22 will be more wind resistant and have slightly more energy left on the target. I don’t see a point for switching from .22 to .177. Besides cheap co2 rifles never get 17J. It’s for maintaining higher shot count and stability. So if I crank up power slightly then it might even shoot faster than off the shelf some .177 co2. And if there are some even over 10 grain .177 pellets and compared to 13.4 JSB jumbo RS .22, then it is almost the same trajectory. Besides in my country it’s not allowed to shoot animals , so one shot one kill is not an issue. I don’t even have comfortable shooting range easy to access for long range, poor lighting, ppl shoot there from pistols at 25m.

No substitute for understanding your scope, rifle and pellet combination. If I were a pigeon at 40 yds I would rather be missed by the 22 than have my bottom jaw ripped off by a 177!
That's why you shoot with your set up enough to know where the pellet is going to hit. I have both and prefer the .22 it will spin my targets once sometimes twice. My .177 won't even spin it once at 950-1000fps with my Chrono checking it. I'll always prefer the .22 I've killed with both. And know where the pellet will hit.
I have only ever owned and shot 22, i have never had access to or bought a 177, i dont know why, 177 just never appealed to me

Comparable lines of .22 and .177 on a graph would show what the difference is better.No one seems to have used that method of explanation.I use a AA s400 (11 years old in 0.177) and sight in using barracuda heavies.I sight in at 30yds to 40yds for my average for rabbits.(12ft lbs)

The bigger the pellet, the faster they fall... I dont need a rangefinder. I have 8.3 gr Superdomes at 1,000 fps, 18.4 fpe. Pest lethal at 45 yards with nearly no holdover. Zero at 30 meters. Why would I go back to a 22 with the same power but worse accuracy? 177 doing just fine in all my guns. One shot, one very cheap kill. Good video.

Mass of pellet rules if speed is the same,,, course i am a hunter not a target shooter altho, the longer the target and wind conditions the heavier pellet/slugs win period!
.22 is affected by a crosswind far more than a .177, just as my .308 is against my
.223 at similar speed 3000 fps at 600 yards, unfortunately no getting around it.
