    It’s nice seeing the vintage small engines brought back to life instead of being replaced by a cheap harbor freight engine

      it’s what i love to do. they don’t deserve to be trashed, they were built too well.

      Ya the old bs engines are pretty bulletproof vs Chinese one time use machines these days.
      I picked up a Chinese carb for my Briggs snowblower and it was total junk. I just needs the outer bowl housing so luckily the clone was spot on ... rest was terrible plastic and cheap gaskets made of rubber bands.

      Couldn’t agree more. Watching this to work on my 8hp bs on an early 70s snapper. Mowing season is around the corner and I’m so glad I found this

      I love the old Briggs engines but they aren’t built as well as some may think, the kool bore engines aren’t all that great.

    Good vid! I always wipe the oil off of the valve tappet, and mark an I on the intake tappet, and an E on the exhaust with a Sharpie marker, as they may not always be the exact same length. I also check the tappet clearance before fully assembling the engine, I have found tight clearances many a time. The valves wear lower, so the clearance reduces as the engine wears. Sometimes I have to file the side of the valve below the retainer so it will slide thru the guide, if you have to remove the valve, a normal flat bastard file will fit into the valve spring pocket.

    I have this exact engine on a walk behind leaf blower (it's an MTD air sweeper and the engine was made in 1989 if you're wondering.) And it works but of course the roof sprung a leak and water got in the carb so I have to take the tank off because it's a weird type of carb like the one used in the engine shown in this video. I'll have to do it soon because fall is approaching and I kinda need it.

      Thanks! the exhaust on the mower is for my go kart, but i put it on my lawnmower for a little bit just for fun. i have now made a custom exhaust header for it that actually is sleek and fitting for it, and it sounds awesome! thanks for watching!

    Thankyou for your youtube site. This is very informative. I have 2 x Norlett Beaver Powerspades in pieces with two 40 year old 2.5hp Briggs & Stratton engines. Both were dirty cruddy non runners. But today I finished my first, with your video help. Only thing is i would like to have one engine using electronic ignition coil. But cannot find anywhere.

    • @WildfoxFabrication
      @WildfoxFabrication  4 роки тому

      Glad to know my video helped you! This one does not use points ignition, it is an electronic ignition, that they call “magnetron” ignition! they’re easier to work with, but the points setup delivers a spark at much lower speeds.

    I have a question about the valves. After removing the valve springs my exhaust valve only comes out half way and the intake is pretty much stuck completely it only moves about a millimeter or two? Thank you

    • @WildfoxFabrication
      @WildfoxFabrication  Рік тому

      This can happen sometimes due to decades of wear and tear on the engine, you basically just have to rip them out and hope for the best, you may potentially need new valves

  • @GhostOfDamned
    @GhostOfDamned 3 роки тому

    i dont know if this is a dumb question but would the S&B 5hp have enough juice to do a burnout on a go kart with thin tires?

    • @WildfoxFabrication

      Possibly. With a centrifugal clutch probably not but if you got a torque converter on there it probably would

    Nice! I have never had one of these that doesn't have some scoring in the bore, IDK why. It's funny, I do the same thing with my old oil, I have an old 1 gal Arizona bottle lol. They're great for storage and you can make some nice oil catch pans with them. The back panels of these engines are always a pain! I usually loosen them with a screw driver and then use a 3 jaw puller to get them off. Can't wait to see part 2! What color are you going to do?
