How to get rid of weeds in the lawn

  • The best way to kill weeds is to start by killing the most weeds first, and then moving on to harder to kill weeds. Getting rid of weeds is actually easier than most people think
    First - Get a generic weed killer like weed be gone plus crabgrass killer. Spray all the weeds in your lawn. After a week or two you will have killed most if not all of the weeds.
    Second - If you have nutsedge in your lawn, get the ortho nutsedge killer. This will get rid of many more weeds that are harder to kill. A week later go around ad spot spray again to make sure you get rid of them.
    If you don't have nutsedge, or have other hard to kill weeds, get ortho chickweed, clover, and oxalis killer. And do the same thing. Spray it to kill the weeds, and followup about a week later. (harder to kill weeds usually take 2 applications).
    Third - If by now there are still weeds to get rid of, come to The Lawn Forum and post photos. We'll help you identify the tricky weeds and how to kill them. Many of the weeds in this category people don't bother killing. But if you want that perfect lawn, you want that perfect lawn, so we'll tell you how to get rid of them ;-)

    Thanks for the plug for the lawn forum. It is exactly the kind of resource I have been looking for. FWIW, that whistling song you play in many of your vids is part of your brand. It works well, and sometimes it comes into my head while I am watering in the morning.

      great!! I might have to check the volume settings. when Adobe updated it reset a bunch, so it could be the volume is too high, I wasn't getting any complaints a while ago =P but yes it's my brand and it's too late now it's in my head too hehe

    Great video. I tried bayer season long weed control, have you any experience with this particular bottle? It doesn't seem to be working. I feel I followed the instructions accordingly but have zero results unfortunately. I have an abundance of weeds, including goatheads, spurge, crabgrass, and a variety of others. How long after spraying the bayer product can I get something else without harming my lawn. I have bermuda. Thanks.

    Another good video as always... had good luck with using Ortho special Weed B Gone for Clover & Chickweed, sprayed using a hand can with some Baby Shampoo ... one point, it takes about 6-10 days before starting to see the results.. patience is needed before applying a second application.... you are right, the premix is good for the general weeds and easier to apply... I like to use the premix as a follow up for the surviving weeds from the first application, after waiting four weeks... I will check out your grass forum .... great job as always ...

      Chuck Kowalski yeah the followup spray usually needs way less so "spot" spraying is convenient that way

    I'm not sure if you're still replying to comments/questions, but I'll try anyways. I sprayed my lawn, which is full of weeds, with the product. What do I do while waiting for 1 week to see if it worked? Do I spray any more in between? I just recently bought a house and I want a nice lawn, but its full of weeds, patchy, and looks nice and flat from far away, but when you get close it's not that pleasant to walk on because it's not level. Any advice would be appreciated.

    is there a way to adjust the distance of the spray? mine goes about half the distance of your spray and the bottle is going empty fast so i stopped after a few seconds. any tips on how to get the bottle spray farther? i have a good pressure garden hose.

    Hey GD. I have what appear to be little trees popping up throughout my lawn. They honestly look like miniature 3 inch trees. Broadleaf, most are 2 leaves per stem. Never had them before. Not sure how they got there. Wind, birds??? Any idea how to control this? Mowing will obviously keep them stunted, but will they eventually go away? Any ideas or suggestions?

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 років тому

      if they are tree sprouts then eventually they'll die off, they only have so much energy to regenerate so many times.

    I agree, you don't have to get designer weed killer for proper weed control. The reason many people don't like this type of weed control is because they are using it improperly.

    it's fall but still feels like summer lately here in NY, but I've read that the fall is a great time to seed. BUT I have a ton of weeds. Can I do both? What should be done first or does it not matter? Or should I focus on killing weeds now and wait til the spring to seed? Also - after spraying weeds do you need to pull them out of the ground? Or they will eventually just die and go away? sorry lol newby lawn enthusiast here :) love your channel btw!

    • @GrassDaddy

      +Jackie Comitino I would seed now and then kill weeds 4 weeks after the seed germinates. Also if you use scotts starter with weed preventer it should kill some weeds while being safe for seed

    After useing this product when can we water the yard and give it a cut?

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 років тому

      You want to mow two days before or after spraying weeds, otherwise you cut off the leaf of the weed that has the weed killer. As for rain each product differs but usually a few hours.

    • @GrassDaddy

      You can fertilize the same day but at high temps you want to use a slow release fertilizer. If you have a cool season lawn you'd skip fert till it cools down but you probably have a warm season lawn?

    how does the chemical know the weeds are weeds and the grass is grass?

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  4 роки тому

      It doesn't. The weeds just can't process the chemical like the grass can. What's interesting is some of the products replicate nature. There is a bush that allows grass to grow but not weeds nearby, it secretes something into the soil that weeds can't handle but grass can.

    Why are the reviews for those types of weed killers so terrible? This would make things a lot easier for me but do the hose-attached kinds really work if so many people seem to have bad luck with them?

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  7 років тому +1

      TheBaseballLiker cost is #1 and user error #2. some weeds you have to followup spray and many times people think weed be gone kills all types of weeds. on top of that there are a few versions of weed be gone, ortho, etc so people get confused (one of the reasons i think its terrible there is a roundup weed killer now lol)

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  5 років тому

      I've got 5 kids, and they were babies too. The key is to read the label. For the most part liquid products you have to wait until the spray has dried. Dry products you have to water in and then wait till dry. The real safety issue is storage - I've got mine locked in a cabinet or in those 5 gallon home depot buckets that even I struggle to get into ;-)

      Grass Daddy IDK, been using Scott's weed n feed for years haven't had any issues with weeds in my yard. Bought a new house this spring with no lawn in the back (front was sodded), mostly bare spots with weeds and a little Bermuda/St. Augustine Used the weed n feed, my lawn is thick and lush with no bare spots or weeds 5 months later. No seeding, no milorganite every other week and no messing around with tons of separate weed killers. To each is own I guess.
