I finished a small 350ml bottle of this and immediately got a regular bottle. Glenlivet 14 is now my favorite scotch. Very pleasant and cheerful taste for both the nose and the pallet. I usually add some water or let it sit with ice for a while, and the slightly diluted scotch produces a long-lasting aftertaste of chrysanthemum honey or chrysanthemum tea (if you had ever had it).
I love Scotch, and I've had from lower end blends to $$$ varieties. The G14cc is my absolute favorite. You're right about ''taste'' being subjective, but wrong to call this 14 a ''beginners'' whiskey. Good stuff is good stuff, period.
Always fun to see how you two go from whiskey into questions, I know my own musical tastes are a bit out there but I love getting other genera and eras of music into my brain too. With all of us going into some degree of isolation we all are going to need more music in our lives, and as someone who enjoys singing I like to think whiskey and song go hand in hand.
OMG I CANT BELIEVE THEY PLUGGED HEILUNG!!! Their shit is amazing guys. And really go through it, each song is very different. I also recommend SKALD, Danheim, Wardruna, Gaetir The Mountainkeeper, certain Osi and The Jupiter albums, FAUN, Nemuer, and Heldom.
I'm in month 10 of my Scotch journey and I grabbed this one around Christmas - I've since grabbed a second and killed it also - I can count on 1 hand how many I've bought a second time. My list to date is 54 different corks in my glass vase - This one I will buy again!
I ended up getting my mom into whiskey after manny persistent attempts. Tried the Glenlivet 12, tried Monkey Shoulder, tried a few Bourbons, but nothing was working. Finally tried Deanston 12 one day for the hell of it and she totally fell in love. Just goes to show how nuanced the art of getting someone into whiskey can be.
Great point. My wife will try many but few does she really like and you never know. She loved 4 roses single barrel when most bourbon is too strong for her. She liked harmony so i figured speyside would be her sweet spot she does not like the big peat stuff but fire and cane she loved its all personal.
I started liking whiskey because of GlenLivet 12 Double Oak. Dont know why but the aftertaste especially was very nice. You guys should review that one day.
You just discovered heilung? you missed their recent tour. It was a short 8 date u.s. run. Rex. If you like them, check out wardruna, eluveitie, heidevolk, arkona, solstafir.
Rex!! I'm so stoked you listen to Heilung!! I love it - and their live performance is crazy! I use it to wake up my kids if they're sleeping in too late on the weekends!! Give OM a listen too.
Be interesting to see this compared to the Brenne French Single Malt side by side. Also a cognac finished whisky, picked up a bottle on a whim because it looked neat. Very, very banana and orange fruit forward, not something I'd drink a lot of but I really like it as an after meal dessert drink.
Heilung is a danish-norwegian band with a german name. Heilung means healing btw. Great stuff never thought the mooch would listen to something like that. Have you guys heard of wardrunar?
Perhaps the perfect time to release some new music Daniel? As a Blues singer, I know I certainly would love to hear it. I’ve always dug the way you compare taste to music. Dreamy... *sigh*
Would be awesome to get a video on how to quit getting that run down the side of bottles everytime I pour a whiskey. I'll take any tips or help anyone can give. Thanks Love the vids. Thanks guys!
Oh my God it's somebody else who listens to Heilung... A few years ago I discovered them with the song alfadhirhaiti. Glad to see that we share a similar eclectic taste in music as well.
I just recently got my hands on some glenlivet 12, I believe the double wood or double cask? it’s the light blue color label. I’m a diehard bourbon guy but man, was the glenlivet nice. What other scotches are similar to the glenlivet? And would the longer aged glenlivet stuff be nice as well?
As someone whose favorite band is Heilung, and whose favorite whiskey channel is this one, hearing a Heilung recommendation is very cool. The first time I heard In Maidjan, it blew my mind.
Heilung is awesome. I didn't expect to see Rex give that recommendation. If you like Heilung, check out The Hu as well. They're Mongolian, so it's not quite the same but shares a heavy folk tradition.
Can you guys please try either the Stauning rye whisky, or the Stauning heather whisky. the whiskys are from Denmark, which is know for having really good rye. The Stauning distillery is also making whisky like they did in scotland in the old days. they have invented a machine specifically so they can use floor malting for their malt, they also still use open flames to heat up the pot stills, as well as keep using small, potstill instead of big mass producing potstills. The heather whisky is especially interesting as they use heather to smoke the malt, which gives the whisky a special kind of smoky flavour.
Based on a few bands Rex has mentioned so far (I think he also mentioned Amenra previously?), I think it would be great to do a few episodes of him comparing whiskies to the bands he listens to nowadays, like Daniel did in December. I'd love to see what he picks for stuff like Heilung (I'm guessing some of it would be Islay scotch, but I'd still be curious to find out).
I looked for a review of this bottle from them a couple months ago when I purchased it. A really good scotch. Only Glenlivet I have tried, but worth the purchase.
Been away a while, but I like the new lighting guys. Very nice. This whisky is $75 at my favorite local store, but I can get a 10% military discount. Still, it's a bit expensive for me. I've sampled it at that store, and I really like it, though.
This is phenomenal whisky! Thanks so much for the review and all of your videos. Btw, in Canada it’s called “Captain’s Reserve” with no age statement. I assume it’s the same as the packaging looks confusingly similar. Slanté you magnificent bastards!
Any chance you guys will talk about those Single Cask Nation bottles? They catch my eye over Daniel's shoulder every episode but I can't find any reviews of SCN picks aside from the Advent calender taster.
Love your videos but I have a question. In my state they stopped selling Creek water. It's my favorite inexpensive rye. What would you recommend for a close second go to inexpensive rye
During my self quarantining I drank a lot of Irish Whiskey in the beggining of the month and now been drinking Henderson whiskey very good. Also heard from a few people if you aren't showing any symptoms you do not have to quarantine? Ummm yeah everyone should because even though aren't showing symptoms you can still carry it and spread it to others. So stay inside and drink what you want. 💪💪👍👍🍻🍹
I'd love to see a video where you pick bottles based on the coolest bottle rather than the actual taste of the whiskey. would be fun to see which ones you like.
I'm on my last pour of this. I do enjoy this. Kind of depressing it will soon be over until I replenish my stock. At least liquor stores have been deemed essential.
3:50 - my last name is "Oakey". So I experience a similar weirdness hearing my name during various reviews whenever something is described that way. Perhaps some nominative determinism at play with my whisk(e)y interest?
I transferred from drinking Cognac to whiskey and after a couple years of drinking practically nothing but whiskey, cognac tastes like pure grape juice to me. The grape hits you over the head like a bat
Got a question. When I drink whisky out of a glencairn I feel almost a pressure upon me to get the most out of it. To really get all the nuances while sometimes I just want a drink, I dont feel this urge when drinking out of a rocks glass or old fashioned glass. What do you guys think? ( yes I am very much into whisky)
Not sure that you’ll ever see this - but you talk about “rich and intense” - what is the most rich and intense whiskey you’ve ever tasted? (anything majorly peaty doesn’t count)
The playlist is 34 songs and 2 hours long. I don't know of any easy way to export the list. You can try Spotify for a month for free if you really want to see/hear it. open.spotify.com/playlist/4FUxzYmdMEiYQzPXNtmTbn?si=nRjMsDcRTbmLpA9hzxpE2w
I drink the levit often. And this for the money is a deal.. I prefer a smoker scotch and the levit works fantastic. I'm currently working on a port finish on a whiskey of my choice. Another thing whiskey markers need to keep ABV at 50% or better. I won't buy a whiskey under 100 proof period and I only drink neat if you want a cocktail then do it but stop ruining your whiskey. If course this is my opinion if you want something different go for it it's allowed.
Will you guys do a review of the Jack Daniels Tennessee Apple when it’s made available? Huge fan of your videos from Australia and you’ve introduced me to a lot of different whiskeys! Cheers 🥃
It's more cost effective to make your own with regular jack and some green apple jolly rancher, and you won't get whiskey that is below 80 proof. Unless of course you mean that they are about to start producing Applejack; per US code, and I haven't heard. Lairds needs some competition!
A Short Driving Playlist, Of The First 13 Songs To Pop Into My Head #1 Reunion - "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)" #2 Sweet - "AC/DC" #3 Billy Joel - "The Stranger" #4 Queen - "Sleeping On The Sidewalk" #5 Gangstagrass - "Barn Burning" #6 Lighthouse - "Sunny Days" #7 Prism - "Armageddon" #8 Sweeney Todd - "Roxy Roller" #9 Savatage - "Jesus Saves" #10 John Denver - "Calypso" #11 Goddo - "Tough Times/Cock On" #12 Rough Trade - "High School Confidential" #13 The Knack - "Good Girls Don't"
You need a new bottle of 12 to compare while you still have that one. Also, I'm sure everyone has seen them already because I only see what has already blown up on the tube, but The Hu.

Quarantine: Let's just chill inside and sip whisky...
Watch Rex's recommendation for Heilung: WE MUST PILLAGE THE COSTCO!!!!
You forgot the Hu
@@cgg4273 arent they mongolian metal or something.
@@thevictorianconservative1093 yeah but I followed the same rabbit hole to them

Glenlivet is definitely one of my favorite scotch's. But also have to admit I still have many whiskys and whiskeys to try.
I ended up getting my mom into whiskey after manny persistent attempts. Tried the Glenlivet 12, tried Monkey Shoulder, tried a few Bourbons, but nothing was working. Glenlivet 12 has been my go to for years. Even when I dip into over whiskey it’s there to bring me home. Cheers! 🥃
Bro that pinapple not wow for 40 bucks outstanding
I started liking whiskey because of GlenLivet 12 Double Oak. Dont know why but the aftertaste especially was very nice. You guys should review that one day.
It’s a very interesting option but no stores ever have it in stock. I hope to try it someday.
You just discovered heilung? you missed their recent tour. It was a short 8 date u.s. run. Rex. If you like them, check out wardruna, eluveitie, heidevolk, arkona, solstafir.

Andrew Keith yeah OM is nice !

Guys, thank-you both for continuing to do what you do in these days! Learning so much. Stay safe and healthy! :)
Heilung is a danish-norwegian band with a german name. Heilung means healing btw. Great stuff never thought the mooch would listen to something like that. Have you guys heard of wardrunar?
I just got this Glenlivet at my local liquor store in a miniature last weekend. I haven’t tried it yet. Great timing guys.
Perhaps the perfect time to release some new music Daniel? As a Blues singer, I know I certainly would love to hear it. I’ve always dug the way you compare taste to music. Dreamy... *sigh*
I watched this while drinking the 14 year glenlivet for the first time

I’m enjoying a Glenlivet Founders Reserve right now while enjoying your review of the 14 yr old. Great way to be self quarantined.
Heilung is awesome. I didn't expect to see Rex give that recommendation. If you like Heilung, check out The Hu as well. They're Mongolian, so it's not quite the same but shares a heavy folk tradition.
Dude! I'm totally hooked on Heilung now. Thanks for the introduction! ;)

The Mooch can never totally lose all of his mooch powers, for he married a Brandy (or Brandi).

Glenlivet 15 is an awesome introduction scotch. French Limousin oak freaking magnifique goodness and friendliness.

20 years as a musician? I'd love to hear what you played. In a musician myself amd I'd love to check out what you played any albums you released?

Im doing my best to self quarantine. Been through a 30 pack of beer, and a Wild Turkey 101 if 2 days.
JT 6188 Now that’s a party 🎉 🥃😉

I've tried some Bunnahabhain 12 year old with a bit of Laphroaig 10. I like it.
Great episode as always!!! Keep the content coming as we can't leave the house!
Thinking Dick Dan could be the name now.
I'm on my last pour of this. I do enjoy this. Kind of depressing it will soon be over until I replenish my stock. At least liquor stores have been deemed essential.
Lolol
They have a Founder's Reserve as well. Can you possibly review that?
you should do an episode on the 18, it's a very nice complex malt. Far from the sweet friendly classic speysides :)
Thanks Rex! I fell down the rabbit hole.
In the store I work at, we sell The Glenlivet Captains Reserve. Is this the same whisky as the 14yo? It's also on cognac casks.
Finally a whisky I’ve actually heard of!
@Whiskey Vault, if you were to recommend 1 bottle that represented each of the regions of Scotland the best what would they be?
3:50 - my last name is "Oakey". So I experience a similar weirdness hearing my name during various reviews whenever something is described that way. Perhaps some nominative determinism at play with my whisk(e)y interest?
I transferred from drinking Cognac to whiskey and after a couple years of drinking practically nothing but whiskey, cognac tastes like pure grape juice to me. The grape hits you over the head like a bat
I play gigs
And i drink whisky
Am i going down this path too?
I've never heard crown Royal mentioned on the whiskey vault
How long does it take to actually taste more than just the flavor of burning alcohol and whiskey?
Hey! Where's the social distancing? Robotic dram delivery?
Was this the last review of the day?
Got a question. When I drink whisky out of a glencairn I feel almost a pressure upon me to get the most out of it. To really get all the nuances while sometimes I just want a drink, I dont feel this urge when drinking out of a rocks glass or old fashioned glass. What do you guys think? ( yes I am very much into whisky)
Daniel I'm actually a subscriber to your channel and enjoy your music, although I didn't have an inkling of whisky you are before finding the vault
Whats the difference between this and the captains reserve?
Not sure that you’ll ever see this - but you talk about “rich and intense” - what is the most rich and intense whiskey you’ve ever tasted? (anything majorly peaty doesn’t count)
Is this good like bourbon whiskey or just poop? if bourbon is over ten years it’s considered high range
Funniest video you have done, needed in these lockdown times
Could we get a link to the playlist? rex's distain has me interested!
@4:00 "F---ing" is always suitable for use as a middle name when you need to add that kind of emphasis.
Also, Heilung is amazing.
whatever happened to the quintessential whiskey wall? did that idea just kinda fall by the wayside?
Im gonna look up this song and report back.
It was pretty interesting not sure i liked the rough vocal style, everything else was cool tho.
I have fallen in love With Glen!
Rex check out the Hu, Mongolian metal chanting and if there's a Mongolian whiskey, there drinking it !!
Link to mentioned 70s playlist?
I don't Spotify. What's on yer Old Man's playlist? I bet I've heard -- or played bass to -- at least 90% of it.
The playlist is 34 songs and 2 hours long. I don't know of any easy way to export the list. You can try Spotify for a month for free if you really want to see/hear it. open.spotify.com/playlist/4FUxzYmdMEiYQzPXNtmTbn?si=nRjMsDcRTbmLpA9hzxpE2w

Heilung is my jam. That shit makes you feel primal things.
If you like them you should also check out the Hu wolf totem. some Mongolian music
So no lockdown in Texas?
For another group, Try The Sidh
Rex, "Wolf Totem" by The Hu is 100% for you, musically.
You're not wrong.
I'm getting a rum experience....and the cognac is very present
I had a bottle of this with my dad. It was good
Danheim is another great Viking-esque music group.
They just released a new album. It's great
So if you guys like that cool tribal feel check out the Hu band
I bought the Heilung Live album from amazon and play it in my truck!
Dude Rex just found one of my secret favorite bands!!
Good to see I’m not the only Magnificent Bastard who has their middle name as their main name
Will you guys do a review of the Jack Daniels Tennessee Apple when it’s made available? Huge fan of your videos from Australia and you’ve introduced me to a lot of different whiskeys! Cheers 🥃

They have barrels at the cognac distillery that goes back to the 1800's.
You need a new bottle of 12 to compare while you still have that one. Also, I'm sure everyone has seen them already because I only see what has already blown up on the tube, but The Hu.
I think these guys own a total of 3 shirts between them.
Brandy likes the wood, but in this case brandy like the French Wood.
Did anyone find the "70s" playlist on Spotify?
I tried this... did not land with me. The cognac gave a weird funky note that I did not like at all.
Ok, so... where'd the part with the whiskey review go? More whiskey!!!
I like the 15.. bourbon finish..... but want to try this for sure.
heilung........ checked it out................. meh...
Rex, if you like Heilung. I recommend watch the video for Wolf totem by the Hu, or just about anything by korpkilaani
Rex if you're a fan of Heilung give 'The Hu' a listen if you haven't already, might blow your mind.
The opening theme to Vikings is by Heilung
