Really appreciated the timing of this! Just getting into whiskey and paying more attention to the intricacies within them. Got a bottle of this, Laphroaig 10, and JW Black over the holidays, and it is very helpful having someone put a note to things since I’m still struggling with the “I know what this is but I can’t quite name it”. Cheers to the new year!

Fantastic starter for showing people who are not that into scotch (especially Islay), a bit on the pricier side which is why my Speyside scotch for newbies is to recommend Glenfiddich 12.

When I started getting really heavy into scotches, I would drink Monkey Shoulder a lot. I still do but tend to use it for cocktails more than a neat pour. Now after really going heavy into the Islay and other peaty scotches, I went back to a neat pour of Monkey Shoulder, and damn if that's isn't way, WAY sweeter than I remember. Could be flavour drift, but I think it's more my own taste changing.

I just bought the 14 and at $35 on sale ( normally $45 ), it's excellent, much like a good Irish single malt.
It works AMAZING in mixed drinks, though, without breaking the budget.
It is really the price/quality value compared to other budget options. Jameson Caskmates also does this trick of adding something to the basic whiskey.

  • @andrewfidel2220

My father in law was cleaning out his basement and found a case of whiskey left over from their wedding! It was interesting to compare a 40 year old bottling of Canadian Club to today's major expressions. There was definitely some flavor drift there! The other bottles weren't nearly as interesting a difference, Seagrams 7 was pretty much the same flavor, which I guess is interesting in its own right since things like growing season, not to mention grain varietals have changed significantly over 40 years. It just be real work to hit such a spot on profile even as things change around you.

I took 2 Glencairn glasses, poured a few drops of cognac (Martell V.S.) in one, swirled it, poured it into the other, then let both drip dry on a towel. Closest I have to Glen Livet is Glen Grant 12, so that went in one and I put a Rye in the other (Russell's 6yr). It changed both in interesting ways. Both had a "dry" aspect to the taste.

A friend got a bottle of Chivas as a gift from an employee for Christmas. (They tried) We tasted it and neither of us can think of a use for it so we are going to buy a 1 liter barrel and age it. First tho, we are going to age a wine in the barrel for a few weeks to get a different finish on the Scotch. Should we go with a Sherry or maybe a Conac? Or maybe something we already like drinking like a bourbon barrel aged cabernet?

I came across this Scotch firstly in 50 ml miniature bottles. In Virginia's state run ABC stores it turns out that buying it in 50 ml bottles works out about 20% less expensive than buying a 750 ml bottle. Interestingly, having now tasted it from a full sized bottle and directly compared it to the 50 ml , I slightly preferred the whisky from the smaller bottles.

Ok, enough waxing poetically and buttering you guys up, two things I got off of this review of the Glenlivet 14 Cognac. 1. I did the exact same thing to my brother that the one viewer had happen to her when giving a gift! I would always get my brother a bo"ttle of Brandy for Christmas for 5 years running. Finally, after much nashing of teeth, my brother said quietly, "Brian, I appreciate the thought with this gifft, but I really don't like Brandy" Talk about egg on my face! lol And 2. Great episode, The Glenlivet 14 is very nice Scotch whiskey, but for me and I love Brandy / Cognac just as much as whiskey, this bottle had me split between two distinctive flavors Brandy and scotch, immediately after pouring into a glass I was smelling cognac flavors, with a hints of single malt. For me personally it was neither or on tast also. It's easy drinker and I think if someone wants to try cognac flavors in a single malt they might like this one a lot, for me it just didn't do it.

Interesting that this being the first WV video I have watched this year is on NY eve I tried a “blend” that I absolutely love.
Virginia distilling co. Highland port finished. It’s a blend of scotch and American whiskey and it’s fantastic.
But on the subject of glenlivet my “introduction” into whiskey or is that “indoctrination”... anyway the whiskey that made me a whiskey drinker was just normal glenlivet 12 year and despite trying styles all over the spectrum it’s stil one of my favorites. It’s just dependable always consistent. Maybe not the most complex but it doesn’t need to be because it does what it does so well. Compared to say a Macallan that writes checks with the nose that the palate can’t cash.

How do distillers make the decision on what proof to bottle at? Do you think it is fair to say that since a large majority of Whiskey is at 40% AVB they often bring it down to the floor for best revenue, rather then for taste? In my head they immediately proof it down to 80 and then do tastings to see how much they need to raise the proof, really interested in Daniel and Rex's thoughts!

I’m not sure if this has been covered on the channel but as a duel UK/US citizen I think I should clarify something.
When Rex and Dan refer to the ‘smarties’ flavour the UK audience and the US audience are thinking about two different things.
In the UK smarties are a candy that are similar to m&ms (bite size Cadbury chocolate with a coloured sugar coating).
However, Rex and Dan are referring to the American smarties which (for lack of better term) are very sweet, bite size, sherbet, but it doesn’t give that fizz that sherbet does. It’s very chalky and sweet.
    Hope this helps!!

I wonder how this would do in a Sazerac? The original recipe calls for brandy or cognac... Would also be nice to see this compared to Savage & Cook's wine barrel-aged offerings.

I will admit that before getting into Whiskey i looked at blends as "We're just mixing up the unused barrels" and now my only turn off is how expensive blends can become so expensive from sourcing so many distilleries (Ie Barrell, Old Carter, Kentucky Owl, etc).
