** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    11:27 - boof
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

in defense of laphroaig as a beginner whisky: laphroaig was the first real flavor experience i ever had. drinking bourbon everyone was like 'ooo you'll get cherries, caramel, blah blah' never got any of it. but then laphroaig was described as a campfire and goddamn it i tasted campfire. it was great. made me so happy, and i've never gone back from islay

@Lord Garth, I agree with you completely. It is 2018 and UA-cam should have spoiler tag options by now. However, it is to our misfortune and disappointment that UA-cam's creative department has not even so much as hinted at this being an option in the near or distant future. Perhaps they have brought it up to the Chief Innovation Officer and they dismissed the idea or perhaps UA-cam CEO Susan Wojcicki has the last word on that and hasn't given authorization for whatever their reasoning might be.
For a better UA-cam comments experience, I would like to suggest a userscript manager browser extension such as the very popular Greasemonkey for Firefox or Tampermonkey for Chrome. Using those extensions I believe it is possible to download scripts that enable you to hide UA-cam comments until you decide to view them.
Please accept my sincere apology for your unfavorable experience due to my comment. Also, be advised that today is the last day of Daniel Week and one can only assume the Dark Mooch aka Reverse Rex will be making an appearance in today's video and perhaps in subsequent videos. So when you see my name in the comment section you may want to refrain from reading that comment as to not have another unsatisfactory viewing experience.
      Again, my apologies.
      Warm wishes,
      -Scotch Llama

This week was my first contact with Islay peat whiskeys. My first glass of Laphroaig 10 was overwhelming and somewhat disappointing. Two days later I tried Lagavulin 8 this time and was equally amazed and fascinated. I did not know that smoky aromas could marry so well with a sweetness that little by little it was coming out of its hiding place behind a smoke screen. Today I just gave Laphroaig 10 a second chance and this time I have managed to tune in to what this whiskey is capable of offering. It has taken me to Scorsese's movie "Shutter Island" over the cliff, into the cave with the fire, into the gloomy corridors of a drug-scented asylum. And suddenly, in two drinks it has turned into a placid beach gathering on a starry night with friends around a candle. And the anise, raisins and candied dark fruit have come out behind the same mysterious smokescreen from the beginning. What a trip, friends!

Firstly, I absolutely love your channel(s), and they help(ed) me immensely in my persuit of whisk(e)y knowledge. Secondly, I looked at the list of whisk(e)ys you have at the vault and was actually surprised it does not have the Laphroaig Brodir Port wood finish. I would love to see a comparison of the Lore and the Brodir. I have not tried the Lore yet, but from all the Laphroaigs I have tasted the Brodir is my favorite.

watching this I had to try Lore. My brother bought a bottle and 3 of us sat down to enjoy this experience. After pouring 3 glasses, before our first taste, one of them got up and left, came back with a mini bag of chili cheese Fritos, took a handful of Fritos to his mouth and while chewing took his first sip of Laphroaig Lore. I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Then I thought of you guys, "the best whisky is the way you like like it".

I'm a newbie and I'm not acclimated to smoke/peat yet. When I tried a sip of Laphroaig 10 not too long ago with my more advanced whiskey-drinking Asian friends, they pointed out to me that, beyond the obvious smoke and cleaning product scents, there's also a ginseng taste on the palate and in the after taste, which I totally agree! Somehow that made Laphroaig more interesting to me and I'll definitely give it another shot in the near future.

Dude, that statement about introverts is so spot on. I'm an introvert, and I've had people point out that one I get going, I don't stop, especially if it's a topic I enjoy and am knowledgeable about. Like, get me on about linguistics or programming algorithms or certain anime/game series, good luck getting me to shut up.

Just had my first laphroaig tonight after only ever having bourbons and I was instantly hooked. It wasn’t over aggressive, I got black pepper, salt water and seaweed mainly. I love salty and peppery food so that was very pleasant. Was much smoother than I was expecting.

I respect the cult of Ardbeg and Laphroaig, but I can't pick one over the other. I just love peat and all the different ones out there. Even though they are claim peated there is a vast vast difference in taste and that is what I like.

  • @dc48664

Laphroaig 10 is my favorite and to me is the most mellow whiskey. The peatiness is there, but doesn't leave a cigar smoke in my mouth like even a tame peaty whiskey like Highland Park. I could drink it by the glassful and sometimes do.

First time here watching these guys videos and really enjoy their chatting. Ended up here looking for some reviews on Benromach whisky (sipping right now). It's really funny how people get to know some drinks. I had never been a whiskey lover before and been more into the cocktails. One good day I tried a Piniciline cocktail and was overwhelmed by its incrediblly weird flavour (burnt wire? medicine? peat? crazy mixed shit?). So asked the barman to pour me some of that peat base which was then Ardbeg. Within the next weeks ended up in a Islay whisky fan club %) and finally fell in love with Laphroag. Well, even when your taste buds die away, you will still be able to TELL IT IS Laphroig.

Tried Laphroaig for the first time today and the first thing I though of when I took a whiff of it was smoked salmon and the taste was campfire and medicinals, maybe some of that nutty black coffee that's maybe been burnt just slightly but I love it and I can't explain why

I'm only 19 so just starting out in the whiskey world. I started with monkey shoulder and it didn't do much for me, was super hard to pick out any flavours. Went to a bar one time and have heard about Laphroaig and decided to order a glass. Fell in love with the first sip, clear distinct smoky taste that reminded me of camping trips I used to do by the river when I was a child. Laphroaig Four Oak and the Lagavulin 16 are my go to whiskeys now!

The first time I tried Laphroaig, I knew I made a good choice. Apparently I was one of the few that can start their whisky journey with a punch in the mouth and enjoy the hell out of it! I recently picked up some Ardbeg 10 due to the raving of a friend, and while I like it very much, it's just not Laphroaig. My next 2 specials whisky purchases will be a bottle of Lore, and a bottle of Lagavulin 16 because Ron Swanson is a great man.

    Dear Rex and Daniel,
Thank you, Thank You, Thank you for your channel. I have learned so much from your banter and conversations. I found out about 9 months ago that my wife was pregnant with a little girl. My wife is of Scottish descent (Campbell) and I am of Irish descent. We searched for a good, Scottish girls name and came up with Isla (for Islay) and Clare (for County Clare, Ireland). At her baby shower, I bought a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask on your recommendation to share with the guys there and I’m hooked on Islay Whisky. One thing is, I don’t care for Lagavulin 16. All I taste is cheap barbecue sauce. I think it’s the relationship between the sherry and smoke. Is there any whiskey/whiskey that you want to love but you can’t get over a certain taste or aspect? Thanks again for your channel. Your dedicated subscriber and soon to be magnificent bastard,
    Ken Adams

A few days ago had a Laphroaig 10.. The bartender looked and me with a glorious grin that said thank you and gave a generous pour. During the glass which was enjoyable, I was reminded of a thick charred and rare steak. Was glorious, as I am a heavy cigar smoker with a questionable pallet, the whisky was fantastic. Heading to the store on payday to pick up a few bottles. Newish to whisky/ey and my go to so far are ryes...

Hey guys. Love the channel. Trying Laphroaig for the first time as I’m watching this video. Been on a whiskey journey for about 3 weeks. So far my favorite has been highland park 12. However, I am really loving Laphroaig as well.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    Highland park 12
    Buffalo trace
    Glenfiddich 12
    Glenlivet 12
    Macallan 12
    Monkey shoulder
    Vat 69
    Jameson’s
    Laphroaig 10
    Johnny walker double black
I also have a bottle of macallan double cask I have not opened yet.
Tell Rex to stop with the black coffee comparisons. I hate black coffee but adjusted to Laphroaig right away. I thought you said that this was super aggressive? So where do you think I am? Intermediate. Beginner, etc?

No Lore did not convert me.. In fact Daniels insistance that it was Laphroaigs Dark Cove made it even worse .. It's not Dark Cove.. It's trying to be Ardbeg...
I was disappointed.. Severely.. Because my expectations were so high... Now that I know what it is and now that it's had a few months open in the bottle to evaporate... It's OK. But I still prefer Ardbeg.. Cause why drink something inferior..? But I forgive you Daniel.. You can't be perfect.... At least your better than Rex.. 😝

Great Laphroaig 10 tip. Add a couple of drops of Laphroaig 10 to a shit whiskey and it will taste like Laphroaig 10 light. I just added it to beam’s 8 Star, which is total bottom shelf, and it’s Laphroaig light!

I'll have to try the Lore if I can ever find it here. I like the general "idea" that Laphroaig goes for flavor-wise; the bright smoke and sweetness (that didn't come from a special finish) are pretty unique. But I just can't get behind that suuuper-intense iodine on the finish (even if a lot of folks shit on me for considering that an "off note"). The Quarter-Cask is a huge step in the right direction, thinking the Lore might be the Laphroaig experience that's most right for me from what I'm hearing.

I'm hoping you review the "White Walker" scotch. Johnnie Walker partnered with HBO and Game of Thrones to make it. They are also making Game of Thrones Single Malts. "The eight additional whiskys are selected single malts, from Talisker to Cardhu to Lagavulin and more, dressed in house labels (and one, the Oban Bay Reserve, in a black bottle with Night’s Watch label) and with a range of prices. They’ll be released over the coming months." I'm nerding out over this.

I first tried Laphroaig after drinking Peat Monster (which is a young Laphroaig). Found the former wasn disappointing smooth, thin, and tame.

Oh man, you guys GOTTA be talking about Blair's Mega death Hot Sauce... Waaaaaaaaaaaay back when I was a child in the early aughts, me and my friends would have LAN parties with Halo 1 where we'd "initiate" people with the hotsauce, having them cover an entire slice of pizza and down it.
We built an incredible tolerance to that stuff.

It tastes like Latakia pipe tobacco, or dunhill mixture 965 pipe tobacco in both smell and taste. I might like Laphroaig 10 more if I paired it with that tobacco.

Awhile back I went to the liquor store to buy my friend a a bottle of scotch for his birthday. I had seen Dewars in his house, so I thought I'd buy him something different and blindly grabbed Laphroaig 10 because it said Scotch on it. I figured it would be an upgrade since it cost a little more than Dewars and he would really appreciate it, but I don't know Jack about scotch. We poured a couple of glasses and spent the rest of the night trying to figure out what happened to that bottle of scotch.
The theories ranged from.."maybe it sat on the shelf too long" or, "maybe it got tampered with at the loading docks" to, "maybe a painter accidentally spilled turpentine into this vat back at the distillery." I still don't get it, but to each their own.

Ok, is it really a good thing for distillery to be so prolific in creating many lineups of non age statement whiak(e)ys? Or should there be a happy medium of NAS and age statements. Either way I'm happy as long as they don't start producing wine coolers. I think I would have to check my eyes if I ever saw Laphroig Berrylicious. Cheers!

Laphroaig was my first sip and I hated it. I went through a bottle of Woodford Reserve, then Monkey Shoulder, then Highland Park 12 Viking and found them all decent enough. I tried Laphroaig again a few months after the first time....and it blew my mind and tastebuds away. Now Im wanting to try Lore, but I still havent tried Ardbeg 10 yet, and I hear thats also a really good one. Ive had a few bottles of Lagavulin 10 in the interim, and while I do love it, Laphroaig 10 just 'does it' a little more for me than Laga did.

Scotch malt is pure barley and as varied as anything. Subtle caramels and fruit and florals in the Lowland and Speysides. Start with an unpeated malt, and when you want to adventure onwards, try something like a Laphroaig Select for an intro to the smoke and phenols. Sip as small as you can. Smell it for a while and let it sit in the glass before your first sip.

I’m with you Daniel. I order my scotch as a cocktail prior to eating. Then water with dinner and then scotch for dessert. I don’t like food competing for the taste of my scotch. (Edit) Although the smell of my husbands pipe smoke the other night while sipping my Clynelish 14 was amazing. And watching Rex be so polite and subdued is a bit unnerving....kinda like when your parents were so beyond mad they didn’t even yell, they just got super quiet and sent you to your room....😳

Only watching in 2023 as just started into peated whisky. Initially was intimidated by Laphroaig/Ardberg due to the descriptions of smoky and campfire. But its great! To me it smells like iodine when opening the cork, barbequed meats on the nose, grassy and still slightly like barbequed meats on the palate. As a beginner, should definitely try something like benromach before trying this.
