I own a First Edition Ioniq 6 here in Germany, it's a fantastic car. The reduced range of the AWD 20" configuration does not hurt me so much, we have a dense charging network and shorter distances here in Europe. More HP does not hurt on the Autobahn.
My Epiq is epic! My range is better than expected. I live on the great diving range, so my city is full of hills which affects range. Range in the city doesn’t matter. I’m always in range of a charger. On the highway the AWD runs in 2WD so gets around 280 to 295 miles in the hills and over 300 on flat highways. Hope this is helpful. If you’re thinking of buying one, just do it.
Another very good review, Tom. It would appear as if Hyundai is leading the market as far as reasonable priced, well built and excellent performing EV’s at the moment.
Just adding to this review, after 3,000 km of driving, in suburban, city, hill-country roads and some long freeway runs, my long-term energy consumption is 14.1 kWh/100km. That makes for a pretty damn good range of something over 540 km.
Great review thanks Tom. Thanks for quoting the dollar recharge estimates it really helps to highlight how cheap EVs are to refuel. Also building a good comparison stats table too.
I for one actually love the styling, though I would get rid of the silver vertical elements on the lower rear bumper as that makes it look way busier than it should be.
Would you be able to speak about V2L features on EV's and how it works practically at home? Also it would be handy to know what an estimated wait time would be for any cars that you test!
I stepped through the Ioniq 6 purchase process and was just one click away from an order, but then saw that the delivery time quoted as 3-4 weeks would have it arrive when we were travelling up in Queensland, so I had to hold the horses and wait until after we get back home 😔
Hi...we have an Ioniq5 Ultimate trim AWD here in Canada...V2L built in (no adapter needed on top level trim) and we had a major storm rumble through yesterday and our power went down for 4+ hours. Plugged in our 2 fridges and one deep freezer and no issues running them. Best of all the frozen stuff stayed frozen and the beer stayed ice cold. Dropped our state of charge frpm 31% to 30%...no doubt it would have operated over night if needed. Great feature and we love our I5 and the I6 looks to be a fantadtic vehicle as well! Cheers! Mike
I have the RWD myself and I agree on the speed limit annoyance. It constantly recognises the Canberra Light Rail speed signs for the speed limit when I am driving alongside that rail. Quite annoying, hopefully the OTA updates will sort it.
OTA can't solve this issue: The reflection from screen in the window! Strange that nobody have mentioned it yet. Taped the top of the screen with a black stripe.
Took delivery of mine yesterday. Lovely car to drive so far. It seems to have more than enough get up and go for my driving and I can cope with the speed warning bings & bongs, but if this gets reduced in an update that will be great too. Thanks for the great review, it has helped me in my purchase decision.
I'm happy for you. I have to wait for my next car, as this didn't come under the $6,000 government rebate. That sucks. Love the car - dislike government policies.

AC doesn't use as much as others, especially level 3 ECO and driver only ac. does 70 mph w/o so much loss and...is now 23 car of the year alike I-5 car of the year 22'
Tom, you used parametric twice in your video to describe features of the car. Are you suggesting they were designed using an algorithm, or what exactly are you suggesting?
I'm a bit surprised the range is not better given the aerodynamics. My GV60 is shaped not much better than a brick at the front, but with normal driving still gets under 17kwh/100km on the highway. This is not much off of the figures you showed at 8:00 min into the video with the Ioniq 6 getting around 15.5. Yes, it's better, but not overly. By comparison, my BMW i3 after 140,000km is sitting on 13.7kmh/100 with mostly highway driving, and I used to drive it pretty hard. Loved the review, keep up the good work!
@@michaelcollier8768 That sounds much better. I could not understand how the efficiency was not much better than my GV60 - it has a its huge (mostly fake) grill area which must capture a lot of air resistance. I also do about 80% highway, so that makes a good comparison.
@@xiaowei1 Most of our highways up here in BC , Canada aren't exactly freeways. We have lots of mountains so the roads are twisty and fun to drive but can be a little slow. Still we do average about 60 - 65 mph most of the time.
@@michaelcollier8768 our highways in Australia are mostly 100km/h (except between cities when it gets up to 110km/h. so we are likely doing similar speeds, albeit I am not driving around mountains all the time.
Great test as usual. I think the RWD range is very disappointing. What speeds were you really driving??? In our AWD 18" I6 we are getting 320 miles+ highway range at @60+ mph average and that includes going over many mountain passes, including a few biggies. Our overall city (town)/highway mileage is north of 350.
@@chasingcars Thanks. We are doing similar speeds here in Canada and rarely get an average over 14.5 kWh/100km, except when we have bad headwinds, and that includes some big mountains. I don't get why the RWD has such poor efficiency. The urban efficiency seems pretty similar though to what we are getting here in Canada in our AWD.
agree with this, we live in Australia, not Europe, they shouldn't be forcing negative user experiences like this on their customers unless it is law here. FWIW I have turned down the volume for these warnings, and at least this DOES stick between starts, and makes them more bearable.
Fair review Tom, thanks. I think the small boot size is it's Achilles heel. Love the range/charging specs but you know what's trumps these? A reliable network. So this is a miss for me as I need a road trip capable vehicle.
I would just throw a space saver in the boot and use soft luggage in the back seat, but there's only two of us so we can. Now all we need is five times more 350 kW chargers in Aus.
you really don't need it, the built in solution is far better than android auto. everything from music from your phone to navigation directions on the HUD is better without AA or carplay.
I bought a $100 Android auto usb fob to plug in for my Ioniq 6. It was a bit annoying to have spend a little extra to get wireless functionality, but I don't regret it because I tend to place my phone in that narrow upper 'shelf' in the door.
No spare tyre is a deal killer especially outside major cities. What are they thinking? Id buy it if it had one. Get rid of the stupid fronk put a full size tyre and jack in there please
A brilliant and much needed alternative with regard to full electric cars. Although developing, it is the way of the future as has been the experience with power tools, etc. Beautifully built and finished, but why the absolutely ugly body design? The front sort of okay in a Porsche sort of way (no motor), but the rear is awful from all angles and destroys head room. Why??
Ugly and slow , next totally disagree, sat in one and test drive one , interior feels cheap and the screens are crazy low resolution, not surprised I rarely see these even living in Southern California, I see more Hummer EVs than these

Dear manufacturers, instead of frunk make a place for a spare wheel please
There's not enough room in the front. There's enough room in the boot for one if you are okay with it taking up space.
When did you have a flat tyre?
Good idea, if space permits. I have never liked frunks because rear access is electronic and the front is manual. Maybe when they are electric?
What's a frunk? Australians don't have 'trunks' so you must mean a froot, the front boot.
Too much weight, plus adding more weight adds more stress unto tyres. The extra tyre will be the cause of needing an extra tyre.

I went with AWD so I could happily dust any ICE Mustang or Camaro, but totally agree the SE 18" inch wheels with full range are the way to go.
Best wheels on the most affordable model
I really hope that Hyundai will do a RWD higher performance version by putting the higher power electric motor from the EV6 GT rear motor.
