Well there’s actually one thing wrong that Nico says : all the other watch brands use 316L stainless steel when not using precious metals. BUT some brands actually have 904L steel like Milus or Ball. That said, Rolex was the first brand to use that type of alloy.
It should also be noted that 904L isn't necessarily ''better'' than 316L, it has better corrosion resistance and can be made to shine brighter than 316L at the cost of being a slightly softer steel.
And 904L is one of the standard SAE Steel grade (as 316L is), let's not get the impression that it was invented by Rolex. And how Nico said that it sounds a bit like that. All that being said, Rolex making all the metals for cases is really something unique.
My grand father used to always tell me "kicking open a door that is already open." Sure he might not have been all there but he sure did have a nice watch collection.
A point on steels - the 904L has been around for a while and was used in aerospace and other industries, though Rolex was the first to start using this steel in their watches in the mid 80s. Engineer here who has been working in the melting plant and offshore industry for many years. I have something to tell you about the hype around Rolex's 904L stainless steel: 904L is NOT a special alloy that Rolex came up with. It IS a generic stainless steel that you can buy in bulk from any larg steel supplier. It's used a lot in chemical industries in piping, tanks etc. because of its high corrosion resistance (pitting specifically) in certain chemical environments. So, the hype around Rolex's "own" stainless steel is just that; hype. It's not true. Also, there's no rational reason to use 904L in a diving watch, unless you intend to literally dive in acid, and I wouldn't recommend doing that. 316L, which most quality stainless steel watches are made of, is more than adequate in sea water. The only reason I can think of for using 904L in a watch is so that they can say "Look, we use a better and more expensive material than other watch brands."
Nico forgot about the single largest expense folded into the price of a Rolex - marketing cost. 30% of the money that Rolex generates in a year is the budget for marketing in the following year.
