There were indeed some very thin watches before the invention of the balance spring in 1675, but they got rather thicker afterwards. Prior to 1675, watches would have a wildly erratic rate. After 1675, +/-5 minutes a day became common. In fact, some early 18th century verge watches could keep within a minute a day. The lever escapement wasn't installed into a watch until 1770 and even then it had teething issues. Mudge himself didn't want to pursue it and Josiah Emery made the next lever watches over a decade later. Precision watches had duplex or detent escapements; the lever wouldn't catch on until about 1810 or so.
My mother, who is from Southeast Asia also owns a Cartier Tank. That's how much of an impact Princess Diana had on the world. She really was, THE icon of her time.
