- In the space of just over two years, Phil Collins scored twelve Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. 12...That’s insane. And actually, that list includes five #1s, and the lowest single really came in at #7. So 12 Top 7 singles? And as it just so happens, today we’re covering that #7 song. Take Me Home from his 25 X Platinum album No Jacket Required from 1985. But what makes this story even more compelling, is the fact that Phil Collins hired the singer he once replaced to sing on the track. Peter Gabriel…. And when I say replaced, I’m talking about fronting one of the biggest bands of the rock era... Genesis. So you would expect there to be some bad blood. Find out if there was. This is definitely one of my favorite tracks from this artist and honestly, it deserved a higher ranking than it got. Get ready, the story is coming up… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Today, we’re turning the clock back to 1985, an era when Phil Collins was king of the radio dial, both with Genesis and as a solo artist. And that #7 featured song I was telling you about is ‘Take Me Home’ from his third solo record ‘No Jacket Required.’ We’ll have more on those eight other Top 7 hits coming up too.
So looking back at this time, Phil admitted with some self-deprecating honesty that these were “the years when [he was] everywhere, all the time, monopolizing the airwaves, MTV and the charts, even the bloody Oscars.” He said try as you might, you couldn’t escape him when you turned on a TV or radio. And then, he continued, “If you take a charitable view, I simply write a lot of hits. If you take a pragmatic view, me and my music just won’t give it a rest.” Well said, Mr. Collins. Ah, the 80s when a guy looked more like your uncle that an international pop star.
Yeah, Uncle Phil was everywhere in the 80s, releasing four studio albums with Genesis and another four solo offerings. When he wasn’t topping the charts with singles and records, he was almost topping the charts with records and singles. Things really started ramping up in 84 with stand-alone solo singles ‘Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)’ and ‘Easy Lover’ and would of course continue on into the early 90s. And if you want to get really technical, from 1984 to 1990 in a span of roughly 6 and a half years… Phil Collins had 19 top 7 hits both solo and with Genesis… with 7 going to #1. That's approaching Beatles-like numbers.
But the pop culture moment I want to focus on comes in the middle of all this with the highly successful back-to-back releases of ‘No Jacket Required’ and ‘Invisible Touch’. Both reached #1 on the Billboard Albums chart. - Розваги

Phil Collins is just so legendary because he is such an adaptable musician. So many different musical contexts and genres, and he excelled at them all. Cheers as always.
To be fair, he didn't adapt in 85 when he filled in for Bonzo at live aid.

There is nothing ordinary about Phil Collins. The man was a freak on drums, insane lyrycist, phenomenal songwriter and arranger, probaly the most energetic performer ever (when he was healthy...). Maybe he looked ordinary but he really is a super unique talent who worked insanely hard at his craft.

Collins connects me with my father too. He passed in 1994 when I was 6. He had both Genesis and Phil Collins concerts on VHS and I couldn't tell you how many times I watched them with him. To this day, Collins solo work hits me hard emotionally. I ended up collecting all of Genesis on record. I was blessed to see them live in the 2000s. It was one of the most surreal moments of my life.
He's one of those artists that in 1985 I was absolutely sick of because you could not turn on a radio or MTV and not hear him. Yet, Your choice for the song today is fantastic. Through all of my 19 yr old annoyance with his popularity. I absolutely loved "Take me home". As a Texan Decades later to find out that Phil is the largest collector of memorabilia and artifacts from the Alamo of all places really made me appreciate what a unique individual he is.

I've been learning Firth of Fifth on bass and watching some reaction videos to that song. If you listen to Phil Collins' drumming on that song it's just amazing. He plays so much swing and space it just fits the song perfectly and he so skillfully matches every change. He really was an amazing drummer.
His drum fill in In The Air Tonight is widely regarded as the most memorable drum full of all time.
I'd say No Jacket Required. Renowned bassist Leland Sklar was touring with Phil when this album was released and he talks about how they knew the album was really taking off because the crowds kept getting bigger and bigger with each stop. Sad to hear about Phil's declining health in recent years, though. Miss that guy. Thanks, Adam!

It's truly amazing how what I call "Greater Genesis" ruled the pop world in the mid-'80s: the band had "Invisible Touch", Phil had "No Jacket Required", Peter Gabriel had "So", and Mike Rutherford with Mike + the Mechanics had their debut album featuring "Silent Running."
You are right. There was an immense reservoir of talent there.
I just learned today that Phil is having health issues, I broke into tears, Phil's beautiful music meant so much. His most productive time coincided with my twenties as I grew into a man and shared life with my late wife, we both loved his music. At 62 personally I'm taking it hard losing the musical icons that were there my entire life. Praying for Phil to have love and peace!
He has not been well for years. Had retired from touring at one point. But returned, however could no longer drum and as the years went on he was with a cane as he has trouble standing.
We've lost a ton of incredible musician from 2015 to present alone. All died too young. It is very sad what has happened to Phil. Meanwhile, Carl Palmer, who is almost a year older than Phil, can still play the heck out of a drum kit! As much as I like much of Phil's solo work, I have started to truly wish that he had never left Genesis. I think they would have easily had 3 or 4 more great albums to their name had he stayed.

Phil is a musical genius. He owned the 80's. He's more than deserving of having a spot in the RRHOF. It's a crime against humanity not to recognize him as such.
He is part of the few that could do no wrong in the 80's. He as you said is more than deserving on being in the hall of fame. Him and ozzy both deserve it as solo artists and part of their bands.
The RRHOF has no credibility. Green Day (no offense to them) making the RRHOF before Deep Purple is absurd just based on eras. Deep Purple we’re around over 25 years before Green Day.

It's hard to say how I'd feel if I were in his position (because I know I never will be). But I'm not sure I'd even care. The best quote I've ever heard about the RRHOF came from the Pet Shop Boys: "When you think of how rock started as this amazing rebellious thing, a fusion of country and western and R&B and some wild white trash called Elvis Presley... And it ends up being an annual dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York with a lot of people in dinner suites nominating each other for the Rock'n Roll Hall of Fame. It always seemed sort of ridiculous to me to have institutionalized the whole thing."
Phil Collins is definitely one of the top 10 most iconic music artist of the 1980's. His solo work and his material with Genesis is awesome stuff. That 2-year stretch with the albums No Jacket Required and Invisible Touch is one of the greatest in popular music. I've always loved his music.
Don't forget that Peter Gabriel also "climaxed" as a solo artist at the same time. In fact, his "Sledgehammer" single knocked Genesis' "Invisible Touch" off the top spot in the US.
Still love "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds". Phil Collins is great! Being in a Hall of Fame is only temporary man made recognition, it is not nearly as meaningful as being held in the hearts of millions of fans whose love for your music and you endures.
When In the Air Tonight comes on, where ever you are, you play the air dums!

I love how Phil Collins helped out lots of artists and bands and lots of artists helped him. Seemed like a very well respected fella within the industry.
Legend! Seen him solo and with Genesis and flew to London for his last gig. I love this guy. And then imagine we almost lost him many years ago because of his suicidal tendencies after his divorce. So happy he’s still around.
Take Me Home was his last song on his solo tour. His son Nic is carrying the drum torch now, what a drummer!
He had a tough life but kept pushing through.
He was the only act to play BOTH Philadelphia and London during Live Aid, and he was the drummer for Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven(along with Tony Thompson). The absolute pinnacle!
To this day I am still wowed at the fact that he had time to play both sides of the Atlantic in just one day.

Yes. When i was a kid even my Dad was amazed by Phil being on TWO continents playing, and it was played in our house back then on 2 TV's (one in his garage while working on the car) because we were big rock fans.

I have seen dozens of reactions of the live version he does of In The Air Tonight. To a person, every one one them are stunned and mesmerized by the musical journey they take during that one song. Its always breathtaking to watch. It is a masterpiece of a performance.

Phil Collins ruled the 80's without a doubt. It's scary to think that if Peter Gabriel wouldn't leave Genesis, we might not get all these great songs.

But Genesis would have stayed Progressive Rock and challenged bands such as Rush for the top progressive rock act rather than giving us silly love songs. I prefer Genesis with PG rather than Phil's sappy love songs.

@@danielwolski873 It was less Phil's want to go mainstream and more Steve Hackett leaving Genesis. Tony said so in an interview that at that point, Phil and Mike overruled his penchant for weirdness. And Phil was happy just being the drummer, and never really wanted to be the singer until years (and 1 bad divorce) later. Then he just jumped in with both feet, and here we are.
My best friend from high school, and my prom date, died of an OD at age 24 and we used this song for her funeral. Ever since, this song brings me to tears. Even 15 years later.

Amazing! I’ve often found it difficult to remember which songs are by Genesis or solo Phil Collins, but now I know that it’s because they’re musical timelines coincided at the same time. That’s really incredible, like you mentioned, that an artist like Phil could simultaneously be fronting a hugely successful band AND be a solo act as well.
My memories of the No Jacket Required album goes back to my days of picking up unspooled tapes from the roadside to explore its contents. In September 1988, I spotted one from the school bus and days later had dad pull over to that spot so I could pick it up. It was a little weathered from the summer sun with some of the magnetic coating chipping off, but I enjoyed what I was hearing. I even found part of a second copy a few years later also in not good shape. Finally one day in a Kmart, I come across a fresh new cassette of it on the shelf and had to get it. Definitely worth the wait. Ah, to be a kid in the 80’s. 🙂
Those days when you waited outside the record store for it to open and put your hands on that record as fast as you could before it was too late.
I discovered Aerosmith-Rock in a hard place this way, walking to a corner store from my high school on my lunch break. Good album.
Professor... I got a little teary-eyed when you shared the bbq story about your dad. Very cool that you appreciated the same music and had such memorable times listening and discussing your mutually favorite stuff. It's very obvious you were close. Take me home is my favorite song on that album. Reminds me of the 80’s and I tear up a little bit every time I hear it. I can also relate to your memory grilling to Phil Collins No Jacket Required. I have a similar memory going to the first Star Wars movie at a drive in theatre with my dad in his Austin Healey. Now I’m tearing up again, congratulations you bastard.
Phil Collins is criminally underrated in history. I dare anyone to listen to his entire work to differ in my thinking. He is nothing more than brilliant in terms of music.

In 1988 i was very lucky to meet Phil Collins backstage at TV Show in Duisburg/Germany.Actually the show was sold out but somehow i got a free ticket. I told him that i really liked his song "A groovy kind of love". He said that he will perform new song called " Two hearts". What a proud moment for me. I always remember this whenever i hear or see something about Phil Collins. 80s were the best...Long live the 80s..!

I remember when those albums came out. Being young and an aspiring drummer, Phil Collins and his music was a major part of my life. It was like a personal soundtrack for me, especially no jacket required and invisible touch. They aren't just number one in my heart, they're permanently imbedded in my soul. Of it all, Take Me Home has always and will always move me in ways I can never describe. All I can say is thank you Phil Collins. You may never know me, but you've always been there for me. Cheers mate.
Phil is a living legend- 1 of my absolute favorite drummers wheb i was a kid in the 80s- to this very day i still prefer wearing Converse Chuck Taylors when drumming because thats what he wore and liked best. Their perfectly flat soles gave a perfect feel on the hi hat and bass drum pedal 😀 i noticed it one night when he was on the Johnny Carson show.
I love Phil Collins, whether he's performing solo or with Genesis, you can guarantee that you won't be disappointed!

Invisible Touch was probably the first "perfect album" I'd ever heard, where every song was phenomenal on its own. I still use The Brazilian for a waking alarm on my phone. 🙂

8 albums in 10 years, that’s bloody hard work in anyone’s book
From 1980 to 1990 Phil seemed unstoppable! From the humble beginning of his 1st solo album and the revamped Genesis, no one would have thought that Phil (both on his own and with Genesis), including Phil himself, would have ever believed all that he accomplished within those 10 years. It's amazing! What's even better is that this guy looked like any other typical guy. He wasn't a model nor was he a fashion icon. He did everything through sheer talent. He knew pain, he had humor, he didn't take himself too seriously. Also being such a great drummer, his ego never got too big for him to take a back seat behind a few Roland drum machines. He just knew what would make the song even better. And I'm sorry but personally "Turn it off" was my favorite from this album. What a thoughtful, heart wrenching song. It's sad to see what age does to us all. It truly hurts me to see how rough Phil looks like today.

Genesis and/or it's various members ruled the 80's, from Genesis' hits as a group to Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and even Mike and the Mechanics. An awesome amount of musical talent in that group!
The man is timeless. His music transcends, he has more talent in his little finger than the majority of the artists of his era and of today. Take Me Home is my favourite song. It's my dads favourite song. Him being so overlooked and not getting his flowers is beyond me. He should've been in the rock and roll hall of fame years ago. It will take for this man to pass away for people to acknowledge him and as sad as that is, it's true.
I saw him in 2021 on his last tour and he was unbelievable.

I ❤ the story about your dad and it is special. I remember my dad picked me up from a Friday night sleepover at my friends house Cyndi P, and on A Saturday morning as we pulled into the driveway he asked me to stay bcz he wanted me to hear a song called “Sister Christian” that was on the radio . Every time I hear that song it takes me back to such a special place with the best dad ever . Where I felt safe , loved unconditionally and it takes me back to when society was normal . I lost my amazing father ….. it’s been 9 years but feels like yesterday ❤
Phil always had a special place in my heart- really he made the 80's, he shaped it. I remember analyzing "No Jacket Record" by myself one night. I think it was one of the first times I had ever done that before. Miami Vice's use of his songs gave them such atmosphere like no other artist.
The In the Air Tonight scene is immortal.
I saw Phil Collins live in Fla on his First Final Farewell Tour and it was unbelievable...the man sang (PERFECTLY btw) and danced/ran around the stage the whole time without getting tired or winded. His voice is distinct and clean, he plays multiple instruments, and he can do both at the same time (you try playing drums and singing at the same time)...one of the GOATs for sure.
My #2 song all-time (behind Rush - "The Spirit of Radio"). Got to see Phil close his "Both Sides" tour at Reunion Arena in Dallas to this wonderful tune. Wonderfully talented artist/entertainer.
The song has special meaning to me as I would play the tape or CD when I was traveling about serving in the U.S. Air Force in the early 90's. Being stationed on Okinawa, Japan, I was barely 20 and half the world away from my family - and there was a war cranking up in the Middle East. It kept me positive and connected to home. And I'd play it when flying back to Kadena (Air Base - Okinawa) from Temporary Duty (TDY) missions to places like Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and Guam.
So I never knew of the tie-in to a mental institution. I saw it based on the travel and being far from home. But thanks for sharing the story, and the Bone Thugs video was really cool! :)
P.S. I would throw out the idea that the success of "Invisible Touch" can be fully attributed to Collins, coming off the stellar "No Jacket Required" album. Both resulted in phenomenal concert tours (which I have on LaserDisc still from my days on Okinawa, pre-CDI and DVD).
I had both of these albums on cassette back when I was in college and listened to them all the time on my Walkman as I went from class to class. All of these songs bring back a lot of good memories.
Hey Professor, you didn't tell us why Phil Collins won't be allowed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! If it's true, it's mind-boggling because he was so influential back in the 80s.
This is so weird - I literally pulled my old Walkman cassette player out of a dresser drawer two days ago! I didn’t even remember I had hidden it in my drawer!

I love Phil Collins and Genesis. I love "No Jacket Required". I had it and Invisible Touch on cassette tape as well. Phil Collins was such a part of my youth and life experience. I blared Phil Collins on many occasions growing up, in the 80's and 90's, sometimes just to upset my grandmother. Phil is a huge Icon of the 80's. This is a great video. Thanks so much for your memories. I hope he gets into the Rock and Roll hall of fame sometime soon before he dies. Thank you.

One of my favorite things he would do was a huge stadium wide seance before Home by the Sea.
The British press had it in for him for years- build them up and knock them down is the British way, especially the media. Unlike America, where success is celebrated. He is clearly very gifted musically and seems down to earth. It is inexplicable why he has had so much negativity in general. His music has been dismissed as bland but it is far more nuanced and innovative than the arbiters of cool like to pretend. It is not surprising that he has influenced a number of American artists and he deserves far more credit. Against All Odds and Separate Lives are probably my two favourites of his. The duet with Marilyn Martin is definitely an eighties highlight.

@@RBS_ Smash Hits was superb reading every two weeks. When I went to university my dad threw all my back copies away without telling me. An act of musical vandalism I was astonished at when I discovered it. I am over it more than thirty years later, not surprisingly! But they would be worth a bit now if sold on ebay. I used to love reading it after school. It was always tongue in cheek in the way it took the mickey out of pop stars, ground breaking in its own way and very much of its time. Neil Tennant, as I am sure you know, was on the editorial team before he ditched writing about pop stars for being one, and then some!

Take Me Home has a very special place in my heart & I can't help but to well up with emotion every time I hear it. You see at the time this song was popular I had met a woman who lived on the other side town & even though we were the same age & went to the same High School we didn't meet until we were both 29. Well I fell head over heels in love with her & 5 months later after we met we got married in April of 1986. Every time this song would come on the radio I couldn't help but to think of the woman I loved who would go on to become the mother of our 3 children. Thank you Professor of Rock for bringing back some wonderful memories of what was the greatest time of my life!
Professor of Rock, I’m in my 60s and either missed or didn’t fully appreciate many artists music at release because it was just harder to access it then and probably my ignorance. In recent years the internet- music streaming services and decent audio equipment being readily available have made all the music i missed available again. One of the most satisfying aspects though is finding channels like this that are clearly deeply researched by passionate people and beautifully presented. Im loving listening to what I grew up with and re-discovering heaps of music i missed or disregarded at the time. Also the backstory to the artists and their music just adds to the appreciation. Thank you.

We spent the day at Ronnie Scott's for the recording of an Eric Clapton and Tina Turner music video "Tearing Us Apart" in 1987. We stood next to Phil and had a few chats during the breaks between takes and ended up with a bunch of drumsticks! Anyhow I've never seen the video, as we would be in it!

As good and as popular as Genesis was. I think it's safe to say that "In the Air Tonight" is one of the most iconic songs ever. It would be a hit in any decade, and it has remained incredibly popular since its release.
It has arguably the most iconic drum fill of all time.

It was also on the soundtrack for Risky Business in 1983. It played during the second most famous scene from the movie.

Loved your video. I 1000% agree with your take. And dang, your personal story with your dad gave me an unexpected tear. I have a memory of coming back from my grandmothers funeral. My cousin put on No Jacket Required and my grandfather started dancing around. It was like this amazing cathartic moment and we all danced and celebrated her life with Sussudio rocking the room. Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel are my all time favorite solo artists. So the magic of knowing Peter’s in there makes me happy. And I swear when I first listened to the NJR cassette, I recognized Pete’s voice before reading the credits.
Don't forget that in 1984, "In the Air Tonight" was used on the pilot episode of Miami Vice during the montage towards the climax of the episode. The way I remember it, even critics raved at the almost epic music video quality of the sequence. I remember watching the episode and then going out to buy the album "Face Value" that week! Those first three albums, Phil C. recorded NO bad songs! They were all awesome! And as a trombone-playing teenager, having live horns on most tracks was my particular way of engaging with almost every track - playing along with the horns, or with the vocal or bassline when no horns were present.
Being a band geek and loving jazz music, the horns in Sussudio blew me away! Tonight was definitely my favorite song on Invisible touch but this whole album was awesome! All the way down to the final track of The Brazillian! And then there was We Can't Dance. Also highly underrated with awesome songs like No son of Mine and Driving the Last Spike!
Funny enough, Phil learned how to play jazz music first before any of the "rock" came around in the 60's. He even had his own fusion jazz band called Brand X. Check them out if you care to.

One week in 1987, The Georgia Satellites' song Keep Your Hands to Yourself dethroned Phil Collins for the top spot on my local radio station. When asked about the achievement, Dan Baird (the lead singer) replied hearing his own voice and that of Phil Collins back-to-back, he was truly embarrassed!

Proff! Thanks for this. The part you shared about sharing that moment with your Father really touched me but for a complicated reason. Take Me Home is bittersweet because these days I don't feel like I can/should go home to a Father who was/abusive to me throughout my life, one I've never been able to develop a bond with despite many years of trying. In fact the song 'No Son of Mine' (We Can't Dance was my first CD when I was 15!) from Genesis reminds me of my own Father, and Phil's voice still sits so powerfully to me in memory because I remember being in the backseat of the car during of of my Father's many rages, listening to that song, years ago, feeling its pain so so deep in my bones. Later in life, when I came to realize the pattern of abuse, after years of denying it to myself and others, it's the *truth* of the memory of the feelings that that song imparted to me, many years ago, that ultimately validated the reality of my experiences! The song itself broke the veil of denial. Sorry for the dark comment here--it's really a bittersweet thing, but a kind of counterpoint worth sharing because it speaks to the versatility and accessibility of Uncle Phil's music. Love your work Sir. I'm going to see Peter Gabriel in the Fall in Buffalo :)
Great video! I remember that period of music well. Invisible Touch was the first full Genesis/Phil Collins album I ever listened to. Somewhere in Tonight, Tonight, Tonight I fell in love with Genesis and consumed every album and member solo album. Phil is fantastic, but with his band mates, he’s pure magic.
Sorry to hear about your dad. So much focus on inter-artist termoil and bad split ups. Actually nice to hear that Gabriel and Collins got along. Had no idea they had ever collaborated. As usual, great tribute to a crazy talented guy who always seemed like a decent and humble. Wish he was healthy enough to play these days but what a career he had.
more than on just this song, Collins played drums on some of Gabriel's songs on Gabriel's third album (called Melt by fans). In particular he helped create the "gated drum" sound (that he later used on "In the Air Tonight") while recording the drums for "Intruder" the opening track.
Who could have predicted that a prog rock drummer in a 70s band, fronted by Peter Gabriel, would have dominated the mid eighties as pop rock singer

It makes me feel old all this talk of the 80's Although being of a certain age I can recall all the Genesis and Collins gigs I attended over the years since 77. My highlight though was seeing The old line up back for one day on a very wet October day in Milton Keynes back in 1982.
To go from Genesis to solo stardom is just a testament to the talent of Phil Collins. I know it's a cover, but I actually loved Phil Collins rendition of You Can't Hurry Love.... when you cover an absolute classic like that and do it justice it speaks volumes.... it's actually one of my favorite Collins recordings, just full of joy. As to the rest of his career, what do you say? The cream really does rise to the top.

Phil had Top 40 hits for 15 consecutive years from 1980-1994 either solo or with Genesis, few artists have ever matched or beat that streak. I remember watching Phil on David Letterman in 1986 and Dave made one of the best intros ever...He said sometimes I pray to God that he will give Phil Collins more airplay! He said I tune in 5 different stations and Phil is on every one at the same time and when I turn on MTV...there's Phil! He is the most worthy solo artist who isn't in the RRHOF, even slightly more than Ozzy Osbourne. When your solo careers are bigger than your bands' great success, but they are in and you're not...something is really wrong!
@ robert polk "Bigger" doesn't necessarily mean more deserving of HOF. Listen to some Genesis through the Duke album, and if you can stand to listen to it, I think you'd agree it's daring, ambitious, and varied, which earns points with a lot of HOF voters. ( I recommend the last two tracks of "Wind & Wuthering" as an intense sample of ambitious Genesis while Collins was lead singer)
By far my favorite musician in the 80's and 90's I loved Phil both solo and with Genesis (probably my fav. band of all time!) Basically Phil and Genesis where the soundtrack of my life growing up in the 80's and 90's plus. Didn't get a chance to see them on the final farewell tour (bummer for me) but I still have very fond memories seeing Phil and Genesis multiple times live growing up in Toronto. Wow that's the end of and era!!!
I'll never forget Take me home playing during the fourth of July at Shea Stadium during fireworks night in 1986. Definitely a memory that will last a lifetime.
My only guess to why Take me home didn't hit number one was because the music world was saturated with Phil Collins hits. Had it been released first, it would have definitely hit number one. Had it been released in the 90s, it would have been iconic and that's saying a lot because I think the song was way ahead of its time
There are only three songs that give me chills… In The Air Tonight by Phill Collins, Don’t Give Up by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush and of course Take Me Home! All three are extremely haunting and get me in the heart (and ears) every time I hear them! To have the ability to invoke such a feeling is incredible! They remind me of going on our annual family vacation to Florida visiting my uncle and aunt. Sunshine and beach smells come to mind

Peter Gabriel's Genesis were the lost band of the Art/prog era in the 70s. They were expected to be huge alongside ELP, Yes, Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues...
I'm glad some of their albums like "Selling England by the Pound" have become respected classics.
Phil Collins has a few worthy songs, but I prefer his work with Genesis.

I think Peter leaving Genesis was a good thing for both Genesis and Peter. Certainly, it was a great thing for Phil's popularity. I remember thinking Genesis was doomed when I heard that Peter was leaving. Then I heard Trick of the Tail the day it was released and I was like, Wow, Phil sounds more like Peter Gabriel than Peter does. LOL

Phil Collins has always been one of my all time favorites.
I was lucky enough to see him in Denmark a few years ago. The media reported that he is one of only three musicians ever to have sold over 100 million albums as a solo artist, and another 100+ million as member of a group. The other two being Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney!
I would question the Jackson 5 having sold that many albums since they were more of a singles act, but it's possible.
Phil Collins is no doubt one of the best musicians of all time. I gravitate towards his lesser known and recognized hits like "I Wish It Would Rain Down" and "Can't Stop Loving You". If ever anyone deserves to be inducted into the Rock N Roll HOF, it's Phil Collins. Hasn't Genesis already been inducted into the HOF? This is why I hate any genre of music that has hall of fames, it's more political and less about pure talent. Some great musicians will never be in the HOF because of people playing games. It's sad.

I was fortunate to see Phil perform live twice in the 80's -- once with Genesis and once as a solo. Both concerts were amazing. For his encore on his solo concert he performed several covers from other artists including Michael Jackson. The crowd loved it. I have always been a huge fan of all his work.
The summer of 1985, I was with my dad and my younger brother, driving from Tulsa, OK to Salt Lake City, UT. A few hours into our drive, my dad stopped at a Target (I believe) in Wichita, KS, and bought No Jacket Required, after hearing a couple of the songs on the radio. We listened to that album several times on the drive there and back. Take Me Home was my favorite! It wasn’t being played on the radio yet.

It's possible Peter Gabriel may have also helped inspire Take Me Home. In 1982 Peter wrote a song called Wallflower, a song that directly addressed institutionalization and mental illness. The song appeared on Peter's "Security" album (aka Peter Gabriel 4) , as well as his 1984 Birdy soundtrack in an altered and renamed form. PS: I think the R&RHOF will eventually come to it's senses and recognize his solo career, hopefully in his lifetime.
