Solo: "Against All Odds" and I've thought that for a couple decades, now. As for Genesis, my most favorite song by them is "The Living Years". I've loved that song for decades and it motivated me to have a strong relationship with my pops so that I didn't live the rest of my life in regret, once my dad was no longer around. I lost him in May 2018, so the song has an even more personal connection now. I miss him and his hugs

I can remember the girls where I worked when this song came on the radio would start to sing along and swoon a bit. Perfect snapshot of the 80s: girls with their frizzy hair, leg warmers and shoulder pads - and Phil Collins. Didn't realize it back then but I was living in a John Hughes film.

I met Phil when he was touring with Eric Clapton.I was working with local crew. I was there for sound check and I went to see if anyone was around and Eric Clapton walks buy on his way to his dressing room. I asked him if he would sign my pass and he says"Haven't got time for that. Then, someone taps me on the shoulder and this voice behind me goes "I'll sign your pass", and it was Phil. Real nice guy, we chatted for about 30 minutes as I was a fan of his since the Genesis days.

To be one of three artists to hit 100 million albums for both solo and in a band is just amazing. What we all forget is that it took a loss to create a moment. Hands down my favorite artist ever. I’ve tried numerous times to go see him live. But every time something happened and I couldn’t go. I regret not taking that leap and just going. Phil Collins and Sade have been my background music to inspiration for writing over half of my poems over the years. The beauty of it is his son is now playing drums in his band. Thank you very much for doing this video.

I, too, was in tears listening to the story about you and this song and your dad. I remember I was in my room at my mom's house, after my wife had left I moved in with my mom, and was recording a CD for my wife, and of course, this song was on it. Mom heard me playing guitar and singing and came in my room. We had the conversation like you had with your dad. MANY tears that night. But mom was right. My wife had moved on and it was time for me to do the same. This was before the divorce but gave me a new perspective on things. I am happy to say that even before the divorce was final a year later we really became great friends. Our lawyers would ask us why we were getting divorced as they would hear us talking about going to lunch after the court dates and such. I had come to terms with we simply wanted different things in life at that point and no reason we couldn't be the great friends we had been when we met. And to this day, we are. That was 12 years ago. This song is still one of my favorites as is everything that Phil ever recorded. I got my 3rd degree after the divorce (this one in Culinary) and am an executive chef and a drummer. My cooking and playing has taken me all over the world. Something I would not have ever done when married. My ex says her leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me. She is right. As always. LOL And like you and millions of others...the best was yet to come after the pain!!! Sometimes, against all odds is exactly what we need!

Brother this tribute to one of if not the single most painful love songs ever written is powerful. I'm emotional now writing this. I feel like I know you now. I'm sure you understand what I mean. Phil Collins is my all time favorite musician, singer, songwriter. I celebrated my 45th birthday on December 5th watching Genesis perform at Madison Square Garden right here in my hometown of NYC. Phil's music has been a constant throughout my life. I felt like this concert was meant to be. What a coincidence that my favorite musician would be performing (in my favorite band) on my birthday in my city? I've flown to Paris and London to watch him perform. I've seen him and Genesis at least 10 times. I told my daughter after he retired that if he ever performed again anywhere on earth I would take her to see him and I kept that promise now multiple times over. She was with me in London and earlier this month on my birthday. The single most influencial song in my life is Land Of Confusion by Genesis. It inspired me to live a life of service to others and no doubt it's message helped me decide to join the Navy, work at the Department Of Homeland Security, and now be in my current career as an FDNY Firefighter. My most outstanding memory of "Against All Odds" occurred when I took my daughter and my ex to see him at MSG a few years ago. He started the night off with this song and my ex started sobbing uncontrollably. My daughter moved over so my ex could sit beside me and I hugged her tightly while Phil broke our hearts with these words. My goodness, what a heavy moment. Your story about your Dad and the phone call got me emotional. Thank you for sharing this video. I love your work but this one is different. This one really means something to you on a personal level and you are certainly not alone in that. And so my brother in sharing these emotions and the memory of the pain love can bring I feel that we are connected. Great video, great tribute, and one love to all who read and feel this way about the power of music. I could take time to express what songs like "A Groovy Kind Of Love", "Hold On My Heart", and "No Son Of Mine" have meant to me during different periods of my life but you already get the idea.

Phil Collins is a genius! He does good stand up comedy too. Went to one of his concerts on a "dark and stormy night" and the power went out. The whole arena was black, not Mammoth Cave dark, but stay in your seat dark. The A\C was out, the place, jammed with people, was getting hot and humid, people were getting restless, when a single spot came on and Phil Collins walked out and proceeded to share jokes and stories until the auxiliary power came on. He owned us all after that! And the concert was amazing!

Oh wow, I was just reminiscing with some friends about this song over Thanksgiving break. My senior year in high school I had a crush on a young lady (asked her to homecoming but she got sick and couldn't go) and I just knew this was going to be our song. Shortly after she moved away before we could go out. Our paths crossed two more times in the next 5 years, but both times things conspired to prevent us from going on that first date, the first time I was leaving for college, the second time I was leaving for Desert Storm. She will always be the one that got away and even though she doesn't know it this will always be our song. Keep up the great work Professor.

Halladay 1. Thanks again for your service to our great nation! 2. What a rough pill for you to swallow man, uggh.. im sorry it didn't work out for you and your high school friend. I recently dated someone who had a good friend in high school that she also wanted to date, but for different reasons never actually did. So it's a similar situation to yours. I was good friends with a girl in elementary school with a girl at 11 was willing to lol 😆 give myself up for but my family moved out of state and we wrote each other for awhile ( wrote, lol yes I said it the old fashioned way). She went on to be a cheerleader and she earned herself a college scholarship to University of Minnesota while we were in high school and it made me very happy to see her blossoming into this young woman I really believed she would be to begin with, after all I spent a lot of time with her and had her basic makeup already figured out. I knew she make a great girlfriend and I was really distressed over the fact I couldn't be the guy who had a chance to win her love. She's an amazing person and would have made a great wife, and as I hear this song now, which was very popular when we were spending the time together ❤, she comes to the front of mind, thinking about the what ifs?.. and the last time that I turned around and left her side 😞 feeling a huge sense of loss

I grew up with undiagnosed & unrecognized clinical depression and I was in my middle teens when this song was released. The lyrics and emotion of the song helped me express and process that depression subconsciously before I could identify or realize what it was. Looking back, it was the MOST IMPORTANT of a handful of songs in my life that enabled me to will myself forward in life. Eventually, I found the professional assistance that I needed all along. While I have had many "favorite" songs of the moment in my life, there is only one G.O.A.T. for me: Phil Collins's Against All Odds. Thank you, Professor, for adding the additional context of its origins to externally validate all those teenage emotions this song evoked within my psyche. Keep up the Great Work!

No one can sing it like Phil. Hearing others sing it, it’s like they missed the point, contrived emotions and murderous tempos make me want to break out the original and play it loud. I loved Phil Collins in high school. Wish I could have seen him in concert. After crying for three days straight from my first heartbreak, I consoled myself with Against the Odds, it was the catharsis I needed in a dark time.

Later when that relationship ended l couldn't hear the song without crying, once in the grocery store, and l felt really embarrassed. Phil Collins is by far my favorite artist of all time. From the beginning with Genesis and through all of his solo work. He's been in the game for over 50 years now and still touring. I was never financially able to go see him live until just last week. I traveled across the US to see Genesis in Ohio. Although it is sad to see him in such debilitating health, I feel like part of that he did for us. His injuries are related to all those years playing drums and touring among other things. I felt like it was my duty in a way to say my thanks to him in my own small way. Not only to see a fantastic concert but to pay homage to the man who has meant so much to my life. I wouldn't be the person I am today without the incredible music he has helped to create over the years. His 80's and 90's music holds a special place in my heart though. I grew up into the man I am today in those years. Phil has always been just Phil in all his music. No pretentions, just Phil. Although you will never see this, thank you Phil for all you mean to me.

Phil Collins is one of my favorites. I am a fan of Genesis and Phil's solo work. So many great songs. I read about how he wrote this song after the break up of his first marriage in Phil's memoir 'Not Dead Yet". Phil Collins sure experienced alot of heartbreak in his life. He performed this song at Live Aid in 1985. He stated in his book, It was the mistake heard around the world". He played a wrong note on the piano. If you watch the performance on UA-cam, you will see the disappointment on his face. He is a perfectionist.

I felt your heartache when you were telling the story about singing the song over the phone as I had a similar situation. I went to my friends who work at a local radio station with this big ploy to have them play a very specific play list while she was at work because I just knew she'd know why all of her favorite songs were being played back to back and, just as you said, my phone would soon ring. But, luckily, my friends talked me off of that edge, just as your dad did you. I am now remarried to the greatest person in the world and we have 3 amazing kids. I'm not a religious person but I do believe a bit in fate and you sometimes have to question when "mistakes" happen, like calling your dad instead of your ex-wife, is there someone looking out for you? Great story, great show, great content...keep it up!

Great '80s song and great Phil Collins song and story as well! Phil also had a more serious and introspective side he displayed on his ...But Seriously album with songs like "Do You Remember" and "I Wish It Would Rain Down" and later on Both Sides in 1993 with the title track, which was more of the socially conscious side of Phil (also displayed on "Another Day in Paradise").
