Poll: What is your pick for the greatest "bottled lightening" song ever?
.....OK, I jest a LOT, but, I'm serious on THIS one......here we go....***"MACARENA"*** , by Los Del Rio!! (CONT.)
... Two elderly Latin Men's 1993 tune, gets a remix, an English translation, Radio airplay, and becomes a Dance sensation, a WORLDWIDE Smash, sells MILLIONS of singles, & becomes the ONLY Song, to have the longest climb to #1 (33 weeks, in 1996)! ...and, THEY DON'T CARE! ....ha-HAAA!! ....Talk about, 'lightning in a Bottle'!
Looks around sheepishly... "Turning Japanese by The vapors..."
Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe
Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover
Mirror in the Bathroom- The English Beat
Reptile- The Church
I don't want a lover- Texas
Errol- Australian Crawl
I'm going to get heat for this one but
Mmmbop by Hanson,
lol that songs makes me feel good and I don't know why.
Oops I have just been informed they had 2 more hits so I will change my pick to
Steal my Sunshine by Len for exact same reason, it makes me feel good
Hey Professor, thanks for the shout-out. I'm amazed anyone in the US still remembers us. It was exciting times and for a few milli-seconds it looked like we were really going to break through and make a lasting impression......we gave it our best shot!! Thanks again for your kind words. All the best, Grace Knight
Wow! Grace, You certainly made a lasting impression. Growing up in a small town, your songs gave me a window to the world of possibilities. Heaven is a Perfect song. I would be honored if I could set up a zoom interview to discuss your music. I love the Blue Kiss Project. Been listening nonstop. I would love to set something up. Here is my email: theprofessor@professorofrock.com.
Hope you get that interview!
Hi Grace! I’m an American and was born in the 80s so did not experience Eurogliders when the music was new. However, I discovered the albums in the 2000s and instantly loved them. It’s some of my favorite music from the 80s. Please know that the music continues to bring joy and make an impression!
@@franko6677 Hi, thanks for your kind words, much appreciated. I'm amazed you were able to find our music in that part of the world in the 2000s, I'm glad it resonated with you and made you happy. Take care and all the best from Australia, GK
@@ProfessorofRock I'm not sure if you received my email? Anyway, I'm happy to have a Zoom chat?
Yes!. Johnny Hates Jazz (Shattered Dreams), Real Life's (Send Me an Angel), Dramarama (Anything), Martika (Toy Solider). Dan Hartman (I Can Dream About You), there's quite alot from all genres.
One of the more underrated tracks from the 80’s is “Birds Fly (Whisper To a Scream)” by The Icicle Works. Just a great track.
We are the Ja children! 😝😝😝
Indeed it is! One of my absolute favorites from that era. I have it in 1st press vinyl…still in immaculate condition, and it sounds incredible! The instrumental separation in that high quality master really makes the song pop. SO glad I held on to it for the last 39 years.
Ah yes, Zack Starkey on drums.
Me: "I don't have time to watch a 24 minute Professor of Rock episode..."
Also me: "wow! 80's hits...? Darn you, I'm in!"
Send Me An Angel by Real Life. I think you should do a spotlight on the 80s band, 1994! Karen Lawrence is such an underrated female singer.
1.Aldo Nova- Fantasy
2. Saga- On the Loose
3. Vandenberg- Burning Heart
4. Honeymoon Suite- Feel it Again
5. Zebra- Who's Behind the Door
6. Scritti Politti- Perfect Way
7. Autograph- Turn Up the Radio
8. Wall of Voodoo- Mexican Radio
9. The Church- Under a Milky Way
10.Quarterflash-Harden My Heart
11. Information Society- What's on Your Mind.
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!!❤️
👍good choices
Fantasy is always on my playlist 🤘🏽
The church and wall of voodoo were Not one hit wonders
Zebra, the only metal band I can think of that hailed from New Orleans. I have that Vandenberg album. “Fantasy” is a great highway driving song. “Under The Milky Way” was so melancholy & reminds me of so many What Ifs. And Quarterflash! So underrated, Loved Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, The Who, & so much more in the 70s that evolved out of what they started in the 60s, but skated to 70s R&B & was totally enthralled with 80s metal & new wave. Aging is cruel on one’s body, but I can still remember the escapades of a misspent youth.
Honeymoon Suite "I've got a new girl now" is one of my fave overlooked 80's gems.
Really good band
I love Take My Hand
Honeymoon Suite had so many great songs on their _The Big Prize_ album!
* _What does it take?_
* _Once The Feeling_
* _Take My Hand_
* _Bad Attitude_
If you love Honeymoon Suite I would also highly recommend checking out Glass Tiger’s album _Air Time: Best of Glass Tiger._
The Big Prize album was great.
I met the Eurogliders back in 84. My parents owned a small motel in Dubbo (country NSW Australia). The band were staying there on tour. They were such friendly and down to earth people (especially Bernie Lynch). They took me, an impressionable 15 year old, to the gig and I got to watch back stage. Awesome. Changed my life. That was it. I had to work in the music industry. I’ve always loved Heaven. Takes me right back.
Steelheart "I'll never let you go", Boy Meets Girl "Waiting for a Star to Fall" , Atlantic Star "Always"
I forgot i had seen atlantic star in concert. They were a wedding song factory in the 80s.
it was embarrassingly ridiculous how much I liked 'Waiting For a Star to Fall' back in the day. Totally not my normal wheelhouse but my work days meant lots of small town driving around at that time, company vehicle only had a radio and that song would always make my day... nobody knew anything about it except me and the radio! hahahaha
@@deanrobert9953 I know what you mean. Some songs just lift your spirits naturally when you hear them. I had a new "interest" at the time. This song inspired me to try my hand at a poem I wrote ... "The Star"... About a star falling and finding her.... Lol .. I was young then
@@scottjeune154 yes... Another good one was Masterpiece
"Driver's Seat" by Sniff 'n' the Tears is a great one.
Would be good top 5 forgotten late 70s set.
👍
What Mike said, but absolutely agree!
Yes 100%. I had forgotten what an amazing song driver's seat was until I heard it again in boogie nights! It is always in my mix of favorite songs to play loudly when I'm home alone!
@@randybutcher5713 it's one of those songs I never forgot even have a used album of Snift and the Tears I picked 40 years ago.
Icehouse - "Electric Blue" was always one of my favorite 80's "one hit wonders"... although I'm not sure it got very high on the charts.
A great track co-written by John Oates.
Loved this song too. Forgot about it bc it gets no air time even on XM 80’s radio
They were at least a 2 hit wonder in the US because "Crazy" from the same album (Man of Colours) was also successful. Me, I became their fan through "No Promises" from the album before that one (Measure for Measure). It sounded like singer Iva Davies was dialed hard into his David Bowie impression, and I was there for it.
"Electric Blue" did quite well, hitting the top 10 in the US. "Crazy" was Top 20.
Don't forget ICEHOUSE were formally known as The Flowers look up their songs like The Wall. Iva Davies lead singer became an Aussie musical genius.
I must admit to a giggle when you brought up Eurogliders - down here in Australia, we haven't forgotten them. They're still touring, and Grace is still an amazing performer and vocalist (and Bernie's no slouch either). Also, Godley and Creme's 'Cry' is one of my favourite songs of all time - great song, fantastic video.
Cry was a groundbreaking video. We were all freaking out at the face changes. My favorite bottled lightening song was Fantasy by Aldo Nova.
Monkey on the Back was great. His first album was great
The song was used quite effectively in an episode of Miami Vice, S2 Definitely Miami.
I liked Something about you by Level 42. I don't recognize most of the other.
I always had Level 42 in the same category as Johnny Hates Jazz, & I think both groups are terribly underrated.
Amazing song! Cool music video also
"Recording songs off the radio." That sure brought back some memories.
As a Perth-born Aussie, thankyou for covering the Eurogliders. Definitely a band that deserved more recognition.
Yep Eurogliders so many hits in Oz! We tend to keep the best ones for ourselves!
There will never be another decade like the 80's
It was the best time to be a teen. I wish I could go back and live there forever.
@@martabachynsky8545 same here ! 😂
2080s
@@tapiwakay 2080's will just be tones - bleeps and blops ! Lol
In 60 years there will be
Probably one of my favorite passed over artists of the 80's was Swing Out Sister. Breakout was a great song, but they had so many great songs. I was always surprised that they weren't more popular in the US.
I consider them a 2 hit wonder... Twilight World was a decent low end hit.
@@RealBarefootIsLegal that's true. I absolutely loved their follow up album Kaleidoscope World which got zero play in the states.
Yeah, I believe that is their only top 40 hit on the Hot 100 so they are definitely a one hit wonder.
I still have all of their albums. I still listen to them on a regular basis.
Very underrated band. Their follow up album, a tribute to Burt Bacharach, is incredible though not a commercial hit. Swingout Sister is a hidden gem.
Maybe I’m the only one that remembers this one: Switching to Glide by the Kings. Perfect new wave classic hidden gem
You're not the only who remembers this song! It's one of my favourites coupled with The Beat Goes On! Awesome song!!
Beats So Lonely by Charlie Sexton is clearly the best hidden gem on this list. I'm amazed Charlie didn't have a more significant career. It's like he peeked at 17, but has grinded out a career without ever achieving the superstardom that many thought he would. I was curious why Beats So Lonely was not on Some Kind of Wonderful's Soundtrack even though it was featured so prominently in the movie.
I think he is still writing and performing in Texas.
I agree, he should have been more successful. But as he mentioned in the video he performed as part of The Arc Angel's for quite some time. They recently reunited and performed about two months ago .
He also has a brother Will who is a talented musician. I've never met Charlie but I met Will many years ago. Super sweet guy.
Some of my personal faves with '80s one hit wonders (in addition to the great top 5 mentioned by POR) include: "Let's Go All the Way" by Sly Fox, "Fascinated" by Company B, "So Alive" by Love & Rockets, "Shattered Dreams" by Johnny Hates Jazz, "Rumors" by Timex Social Club, a different song called "Cry" by Waterfront, "The Rain" by Oran "Juice" Jones, and the "Lean On Me" remake by Club Nouveau.
All great songs. So Alive and Shattered Dreams are definitive 80s!
Johnny Hates Jazz had a couple other minor hits. "Turn Back The Clock" and "I don't want to be a hero" . Good tunes, check them out :-)
I love “The Rain”. I use the lyrics from that song a lot sometimes when talking to people.
Love & Rockets
First 3 albums are effin brilliant!
"Cry" by Waterfront, a hidden gem!
Two bands that hit around the same time that I LOVE and you don't hear often are "Icehouse" and "The Cutting Crew". Awesome sounds!
Cutting Crew was incredible! The Broadcast album is a movie soundtrack for a movie never made.
Icehouse "Crazy" One of my Favorite songs to this Day!
Saga “On the Loose” in my early MTV exposure. I never heard such an explosive rock song. Featuring a solo stand off between lead guitar and fast pace keyboards. This song seems lost in the ether, but not in my rock ‘n’ roll heart
Love that one, have on many playlists too!
I think that song laid the ground work for Dream Theater with the syncopated guitar and synth solo
Great classic song...was played at my high school graduation in 1983🎓😊✌️
Love that song!! I used to hang with 3 guys in my younger days & this song reminds of those days!!! They were awesome guys & we had so much fun!!!!
Love that tune.... First heard it in '82 🎹 🎸 😉
Glad to see "I'm Not In Love" and "Cry" getting the recognition for their composition and artistic brilliance. I get choked-up listening to either, discovering they are from the same composer(s) fills me with awe of their talent, and saddened there aren't more like these from them.
Loved your choice for #1. "Cry" was great. My #2 would have been "Icicle Works" Birds fly (Wisper to a scream).
LOVE Birds Fly 💜
Yes, amazing song!
Yasssss, great one!!!
"Why Me" by Planet P is a good song you don't hear very often anymore.
Zebra , Who’s Behind The Door, is one of my favorite hidden gems of the 80’s
Great #1 & 3! I love those songs! Other lightning gems: "Send Me An Angel" by Real Life/"Modern Day Delilah" by Van Stephenson/"Alibis" by Sergio Mendes/"Voyeur" by Kim Carnes/"What About Me?" by Moving Pictures.
Everyone may remember Falco for "Rock Me Amadeus", but I think "Vienna Calling" (also from the album "Falco 3") should have also been a hit.
I nominate “Shelter” by Lone Justice for a fantastic Bottled Lightning tune.
The music both shimmers and jangles with pulsating energy, while Maria McKee belts out her powerful yet sensitive vocals.
“Shelter” has remained one of my favourite songs ever since I first heard LJ play it while opening for U2 at the Hartford Civic Center in 1985.
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
Great band, great songs, great singer
Ways to Be Wicked and Sweet, Sweet Baby are gems, too.
One of my all time favorites!
Giuffria’s “I must be dreaming” is one of the best songs of the decade. Still love it
Here's my 5er for "Forgotten 'One-Hit Wonders' of the 80s"... no particular order:
1) Greg Guidry - "Goin' Down"
2) Brenda Russell - "Piano In The Dark"
3) Bertie Higgins - "Key Largo"
4) Charlie Dore - "Pilot Of The Airwaves"
5) Laid Back - "White Horse"
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!❤️
@@amytaylor21695. Same to you, Amy!
@@tjm3774 You are welcome 🙏 Timothy
Nice meeting you
As far as I know these artists only had one major hit, so these would be my top 5:
Thomas Dolby - She blinded me with science
Laid Back - White horse
Scritti Politti - A perfect way
After the Fire- Der Kommissar
John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band - On the dark side
Honorable Mention
Tom Tom Club - Genius of love
I'm pretty sure Scritti had a few hits ...Wood Beez, word girl,Oh Patti,Absolute... fantastic tracks.
Overnight is a particular favourite of mine.
Perfect Way. Good one!
Aliens Ate My Buick was Thomas Dolby's best album. Airhead and Hot Sauce should've been far bigger hits than they were.
Great list. Pretty sure that Falco did Der Kommissar first. But the After the Fire English version is “fire” also. 😉😊
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band had other top 40 hits! "Tender Years," "Tough All Over," "C-I-T-Y" :)
Thanks for putting Guiffria and Charlie Sexton on this list. I’ve played a couple of times with Charlie and he’s a great guy. I also love Arc Angels!
This is a great list! My honorable mention would be After the Fire - Der Komissar. They’re version is more polished but the original is also great.
@Devil Shark Gary Numan - Cars!
Love After the Fire but feel that they aren't a hidden or forgotten gem. I hear Der Komissar all the time.
@@ProfessorofRock you’re right and even though Falco wrote the original which may be a lost gem, Rock Me Amadeus certainly isn’t.
I guess Cars isn’t either. Boy, I’m just missing all over today! lol
Wow, “Der Komissaar” is a HUGE one hit wonder. That song is so bouncy and infectious!
Falco🎵🔥
Thank you for mentioning Hipsway and 'The Honeythief'! One of my favorite underrated 80s tracks. I play this track regularly and still have people ask me "Who is that?"
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
My 5 would include: Lunatic Fringe (love that song), Relax (I have a "Frankie Says Relax" t-shirt), Angel Eyes (Always thought SNL would do a cover being played by an unseen clown until the very end), Voices Carry and Toy Soldiers as the ladies voices are so strong and emotional.
Would Saga’s song On the Loose qualify here? Saga didn’t have a lot of hits in the U.S., but this was a great song from the early 80’s!
@@conssuckballs I remember both of those.
@@conssuckballs Wind Him Up would be my pick from Saga, also it had a great video!
The Firm Radioactive
Other hidden gems that I'd love to see you feature include:
Holiday -The Other Ones
Catch Me I'm Falling - Pretty Poison
Welcome to the Boomtown - David and David
Wouldn't It Be Good - Nik Kershaw
Perfect Way - Scritti Politti
Don't Disturb This Groove - The System
Summer Girls - Dino
Right On Track - Breakfast Club
Sweetheart - Franke & the Knockouts
Don't Shut Me Out - Kevin Paige
Major Tom - Peter Schilling
Not Just Another Girl - Ivan Neville
Just some thoughts
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
@Sean Smith, I love, love loved "The System"!! Thanks for putting that one down! 😁
I was going to mention Peter Schilling! "The Different Story" is also an awesome track!
Major Tom is almost an anthem song for that era.
“Welcome to the Boomtown” by David & David, Love that song!
"Beats So Lonely" is such a fantastic song! I bought that album when it came out and it was so great, I couldn't understand why Charlie didn't have more success off that album. And Giuffria was one of my favs of the 80s! First album was really good, but "Silk and Steel" was phenomenal...should've been huge!
I bought the .45 single but never got the album. He was predicted by many to become a star but it never happened. Definite Billy Idol vibe like The Professor said.
He did some great work with the Arc Angels, made a couple of nice solo records, and has been Dylan’s guitarist for years. Not quite superstardom, but not bad.
Charlie's sound also reminded me a bit of John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.
I didn't know that the Divinyls covered "I ain't gonna eat out my heart anymore"?! Because of Godley & Creme's "Cry": I love the version used in the Miami Vice episode "Definitely Miami". It begins like "I'm not in love", but it's actually "Cry". :)
And as you were talking about "Some kind of wonderful".... I love the song "Turn to the sky" by The March Violets. :)
One Hit Wonder.... hmmmmm:
Oran “Juice” Jones “The Rain”
The Church “Under The Milky Way”
Red Rider “Lunatic Fringe”
Neneh Cherry “Buffalo Stance”
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians “What I Am”
Hey Professor, here are some of my best "Bottled Lightning" songs of the 80's: "When I'm With You" by Sheriff (1989), "Never Ending Story" by Limahl (1985), "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc. (1980--from the very first album I bought), "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell (1982), and "Let's Go All The Way" by Sly Fox (1986).
Sly fox really thumped italo disco in the states along with Baltimora. I always felt bad for milli vanilli as they werent cheating they were really just performing with italo disco standards.
When I'm With You was actually a hit a previous time several years before (1983 I think)
@@shamrock1569 That's right. There was another bottled lightning hit by a group called Real Life called "Send Me An Angel " which was a minor hit in 1983-1984 but was remixed five years later and became a bigger hit in 1989. There's also the yacht rock classics "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree and "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins, the dance singles "Baby Love" by Regina, "Catch Me I'm Falling" by Pretty Poison, and "Right On Track" by the Breakfast Club, and the hip-hop classic "Jam On It" by Newcleus.
@@shamrock1569 Correct. "When I'm With You" was a minor hit in '83. It was revived in 1988 and hit #1 in the US in 1989.
never ending story by Llamahl is so underrated!
Thanks for the EuroGliders
You've a lot of love for those Aussies from the 80s who broke through
As a result this Aussie has a lot of respect for you
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
"Everywhere That I'm Not" by Translator is probably my favorite one-hit-wonder hit of the 1980s.
Life in a northern town, dream academy.
Nowhere Girl by B-Movie. That song is one of those songs that when you listen to it, sounds like the very musical transition from late 1970s punk rock to early 1980s new wave synthpop. It just pops up that image in your head and you feel it in your heart. You can even tell how it was going to then evolve into darkwave and goth music later.
Great pick
@@markallen2984 Thanks. It's one of my favorite post-punk rock songs. I think that it's in the top ten best along with The Order Of Death by Public Image, Limited.
in 1984 this was the song.... to blast in my first car about failed love or lovers....love it to this day.....thanks for sharing!!!!
Awesome awesome choice. I found an amazing version of this back in 2006 on a remix album called Future Retro. It had a bunch of remixed 80’s tracks by Devo, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Yaz, etc. Well worth a look.
I forgot about that one! What a great song…
One 70s song that comes first to my mind for a Bottled Lightning song is "Driver's Seat" by Sniff "n" the Tears
The Professor hit the nail on the head with #1 - "CRY" by Godley and Creme. Loved this song!
I think a much earlier stroke of genius single of theirs "An Englishman in New York" (1979) is a real forgotten gem, creepy Dr. Phibes-like video too.
Some of my forgotten gems off the top of my head in no particular order:
The Breakfast Club - Right On Track
Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything
The System - Don’t Disturb This Groove
Cheri - Murphy’s Law
Mighty Lemon Drops - Inside Out
Madonna was in the breakfast club for a hot minute.
Forgot about Murpht's Law wow thanks
Inside out is REALLY GOOD!!
@@scottjeune154 Yes she was...Not very long.
@@davehandelman2832 love the Mighty Lemon Drops 🍋
I do remember these tunes. Sad to say, they were buried deep in my memory. The one that had the biggest impact was Giuffria. I had a friend that was also a DJ at the college radio station. He turned me on to so many new bands with new sounds. Giuffria was just one of the bands. He and I were looked at in highschool as rock and roll nerds. We went to all kinds of concerts. From Boston to Iron Maiden with Poison and Sammy Hagar in the mix. So Giuffria fit right in. Thanks for bringing back some forgotten gems!
Just checked out Giuffria, you are right. Thanks. That’s a big reason why I come here.
Silk And Steel is an awesome album!
Thought I was the only one! Lol
Here's another one that floats across my mind all the time: "I Wish I Had A Girl Who Walked Like That" by Henry Lee Summer. Have mercy!
I love that song. The video was great too.
Oh my gosh, yes! As soon as I read his name I literally let out an audible gasp because I remembered I loved a song by him! I was too young to pay too much attention to the name of the song but yes, that was the one! ~ Thank you for commenting.
The whole of the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack was outstanding ⭐️
here here
Der Kommisar, the ATF version, of course.
YES..!!! Charlie Sexton..!!! Arc Angels is possibly my favorite album. I’ve been down with him since his 1st album. Phenomenal musician.
He also appeared on Martha Davis' solo album in 1987.
“Who’s Behind The Door” from Zebra. Great, great band!
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
I LOVE "Heaven" by the Eurogliders!!! It's been an absolute favourite since it was released...luckily it was played frequently on MuchMusic here in Canada...and I still listen to it regularly all these years later.
I think I'm going to listen to it right now!! 🎶❤️
This episode was one of my favorites. It really hit my heart strings with deep feelings and memories from the past. The 80s was and always will be the best and most important decade of my life.
What about Quarterflash?
Find Another Fool,
Harden My Heart
*Professor, with your love for new wave/alternative music, I cannot believe no mention of Information Society?!?!?!

Angel Eyes
Midnight Oil
Beds Are Burning
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, On The Darkside,
Tender Years
Alphaville - Forever Young
The Electric Boy’s
All Lip’s N’ Hips
When my Guitar gently weeps is really a folk song. I don't listen to the beatles so I had no idea it was played by them...
Another one-hit I love is Salt In My Tears - Martin Briley.
Great Song
I was the only one I knew who bought the Eurogliders-This Island. Heaven (Must Be There) made it onto most of my mixed tapes.
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
I saw the Eurogliders lots of times in the early 80's - great band live and as well as having a great voice Grace was really pretty.
So many great Aussie bands in those years. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights then were often a battle to choose what band to see.
Where i come from in upstate ny divinyls were already extremely popular way before I touch myself (RIP Christine)
What a era! Living in Sydney we had the same problem. So many venues, so many quality acts, too much choice. None of us realised how good we had it at the time. When I go past one of the dozens of pubs we went to see bands then today I always flashback to those years & feel glad that I was part of something special
One of the first albums I bought was True Colours by the Split Enz. Solely for the single ‘I Got You’, it was the first album with ‘laser-etching’- how high tech!
I also liked quirky Tracy Ullman’s ‘They Don’t Know’ with the added bonus of Paul McCartney in the video!
I remember Split Enz from their appearance on the TV show “Fridays.”
Yes, wow! I Got You. Very solid choice for this list!
The song Shark Attack is such a cool song on True Colors.
Ah yes, great song. The band before the Finn brothers were in Crowded House. 👍🏻😊
Modern English- someones calling, ink and paper, hands across the sea
Bourgeois Tagg - i dont mind at all
Game Theory - 24
The Primitive - crash
Pete Wylie - sinful
The Silencers- painted moon
The Ocean Blue - between something and nothing
Red Rockers - china
Propaganda - duel
Lime - your love
Prefrab Sprout - when love breaks down
Cactus World News - years later
Flesh for Lulu - i go crazy
The Go Betweens - love goes on
Plimsouls - now
54 40 - i go blind
Idles Eyes - toyko rose
Curiosity killed the cat- misfit
Box of Frogs - back where i started
The Kings - switchin to glide
Slade - run runaway
Nik Kershaw - wouldnt it be good
"You Ain't Worth the Salt in My Tears" by Martin Briley, from 1983. I think that it's a song that you would definitely categorize as "Bottled Lightning," and if you haven't featured it on your channel before, then I hope that you'll check it out.
It's not just one of my top 10 favorites from the 80s, but I think that it's one of the best songs that I've heard since I popped into the world 59 years and 2 months ago.
"It still hurts but the pain has shifted" is still one of the great hilarious lines from rock.
One night with a stranger is filled with good tracks.
Wow! Love that song!
Hard to limit this to just five songs. I can think of five more that don't get much airplay anymore:
Marshall Crenshaw -- Someday, Someway
Icicle Works -- Whisper to a Scream
Scritti Politti -- Perfect Way
Jeff Healey -- Angel Eyes
Alannah Myles -- Black Velvet
Whisper to a scream is a great track as is Hollow Horse and love is a wonderful colour
Someday, Someway should have been a hit but sadly never peaked beyond #34 on the charts. I could never figure out why Marshall Crenshaw just disappeared into the oblivion..great song!
Dude! POR!! That Charlie Sexton song!!! What a Hidden Gem! Took me right back. Loved that song when it came out-and totally forgot about it! 😂 Hearing it now was like listening to Corey Hart doing Billy Idol as the lead in Eddie And The Cruisers! 🤣 Frickin’ great gem. Think it might belong at No. 1. 🔥🤙
This Beat Goes On / Switchin to Glide - The Kings.
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Whisper to a Scream - Icicle Works
Der Kommissar - After the Fire
Perfect Way - Scritti Politti (sp)
Heart & Soul - T'Pau (sp)
Why Me - Planet P
Major Tom - Kurt Schilling
Arizona Sky - China Crisis
Great to see some love given to Eurogliders. Their albums are such gems and deserve more attention.
Somebody’s watching me by Rockwell, even with MJ singing background, The Power Station with Some like it hot (even though there were a couple other hits and the group consisted of some members of Duran Duran and Robert Palmer, and you can’t forget about the no name artists who wrote and preformed for soundtracks.
I saw power station on tour with OMD as opener because Go West backed out (guess they stayed east?)
Knife by Rockwell
Great video! My wife and I love, love, love that Charlie Sexton, and Godley & Creme were recognized as hidden gems! Other bands worth considering as hidden gems are The Dream Academy, Zebra, and Split Enz.
Dream Academy 😍
Second that/those
I guess it depends which part of the world you live, but I would never consider Split Enz a one hit wonder, but absolutely a hidden gem. Neil Finn is one of the most underrated singers/songwriters ever.
@@krisrossi501 'One Step Ahead" was one of the first 45 rpm records I ever bought. Also, my wife & I play bass and guitar, respectively, and one of our favorite songs to play together is, 'I Got You." We also like Crowded House.
I heard Cry on Miami Vice and LOVED it! Bought it on cassette the next day and wore it out. I never understood why it wasn’t a bigger hit.
"Close (to the Edit)" by Art of Noise transformed my concept of music. Art of Noise was at least ten years before their time; Trevor Horn was a member.
The greatest bottled lightning song for me is We don't have to take our clothes off by Jermaine Stewart.
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!!❤️
@@amytaylor21695. doing great, thank you! Have a great day also!
@@keithroberts4952 good to hear that. Where are you from?
@@amytaylor21695. London, England.
@@keithroberts4952 cool. I’m originally from New York but I live in Virginia. How’s the weather there today!
Love your show but I can't help but wonder why you seem to have missed "Talk Talk". They started in the 80's with a synth pop sound but evolved into something amazing. They are a great band and should be featured. Thank you.
Talk Talk have so many great songs, wasn't a one hit wonders
I always loved "Beat so Lonely". It got heavy rotation on Video Hits & Much Music here in Canada. I watched "Some Kind of Wonderful" with good friends when it came out & three times in the last 7 years, it never gets old!
I'm not sure if the following artists are one hit wonder of 80s in the US, but they were great one hit wonders to me.
1. "When The Heart Rules the Mind", GTR
2. "The Captain of her heart", Double
3. "Life in a Northern Town", Dream Academy
4. "Power of Love", Jennifer Rush (the first original version)
5. "Election Day", Arcadia... ( 3 members of Duran Duran's special Project) 👍🏽
One of my favorite forgotten "One-Hit Wonders" of the 80s was released in 1982... a tune called "Goin' Down" by Greg Guidry... peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #11 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
i like that Greg Guidry song too. Something very calming about it.
Great stuff prof! Perhaps you should consider a series on the "greatest bands that never were". Meaning they were damn good but never made it.
For example, a great, yet obscure 80s hair band Kix. Crunchy riffs, heavy bass, rich sound, and a front man with the moves-- but never got their due.
My family is throwing me an 80s party for my 50th in June. I can't wait!
I’m a young person who admires music, mainly stuff from the 70s and 80s. I especially like finding lesser known songs and artists from those two decades so I love your Hidden Gems videos. I appreciate you adding Giuffria to this list! Plus I discovered some others that I hadn’t heard before. They are going onto one of my playlists! A couple of mentions for future videos include a few by some of my favorite bands: “Hold On To 18” by Black ‘N Blue, “When I’m With You” by Sheriff, and some early 90’s stuff: “More Than Words Can Say” by Alias (and I also love “Waiting For Love” by Alias).
Check out “Here’s Where the Story Ends” by The Sundays, from 1990.
Fiction Factory- Feels Like Heaven 1984. Probably not a hit in America but top 10 in the UK.
Deacon Blue- Dignity/ Real Gone Kid and more.
Big Supreme- Don't Walk ( no cigar in the UK but played in clubs in America I understand)
Dear Professor Adam: I am subscribed and love these type of videos! *THIS ONE* is now my all-time fave (unless you do one of the 7 tracks I'll list)! I was working at an IL based record store chain called J.R.'s Music Shop in 84/85 when both Giuffria and The Eurogliders came out: I loved both! In fact, "This Island" by Eurogliders is in my Top 25 albums of ALL-TIME! I saw & met them on tour on 2/14/85 in Chicago!
I wish this would show me WHO liked my comment, so I could contact them and make friends with the like-minded!
Hey Jerry, Thanks for your kind words about our music...it amazes me that there's anyone in the US that still remembers us, it was a long time ago. I'm with you about the camera phones, I don't think I've got a single photograph from that tour in '85.....if it was today I'd have a million photos and hours of video. I'm interested that you have us in Chicago in February, my memory might be playing tricks but I thought we were in the US in April/May that year.....I'm imagining it would be very cold in Feb and I don't remember it like that? I wasn't in the habit of hugging and kissing people so you must have made an impression!! Grace Knight
Wow! These were a surprise. Some I had never heard before. Just prior to the reveal, I was guessing that your Top 5 would include one or more of the following:
"C'est La Vie" - Robbie Neville
"Break My Stride" - Matthew Wilder
"Holding Back the Years" - Simply Red
"Major Tom" - Peter Schilling
"19" - Paul Hardcastle
"I Want to Know What You're Thinking" - Information Society
Wrong on all counts. Thankfully, I am not a betting man. ;)
This is exactly why I follow you. Reminding me of songs that I loved and have lost track of. Eurogliders Heaven was just one of the songs that I had lost and now have found again. Thank you..
I was always a big fan of the debut album by Australians The Other Ones that included hit Holiday, but the whole album has some infectious melodies.
I mean... come on!!
ua-cam.com/video/Zvucu5vIhbE/v-deo.html
i love the other ones. i've always remembered them throughout the years as one of my hidden gems.
Nice to see the shout out for the Eurogliders. I first saw them as a support act for INXS when they were virtual unknowns. When they played "Heaven", it just stood out as an instant classic. It was a big hit here in Australia. Another great Aussie new wave hidden gem was Real Life - Send me An Angel ua-cam.com/video/hwfErYUoqx8/v-deo.html
There were some great Aussie/NZ bands in the 1980's who "should've done better" in America. I don't know if it was record label executives here or there, but many people were asleep.. Men At Work, INXS, Rick Springfield and Midnight Oil had success and The Church found an alternative niche on college radio. But there were many great bands... Cold Chisel, The Angels, Split Enz, Divinyls, Mental As Anything, Icehouse, John Farnham, Australian Crawl, Mondo Rock, Hoodoo Gurus, The Saints, Rose Tattoo, Hunter's & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Go-Betweens, Triffids, Models, Real Life, Machinations, Kids in the Kitchen
And Crowded House of course!!
Send me an Angel and Under the Milky Way would both be in my top 5 one hit wonders. Love both of those songs!
@@maxkolbe8893 but crowded House did make it big in the US
you've got some great ones on that list but missed the Black Sorrows, hold on to me is gorgeous ua-cam.com/video/Zn-bBLWw8kc/v-deo.html
@@davidgeisler9885 Indeed but Carl Marx didn't include them with Midnight Oil and Men at Work.
I was on a 7 hour flight from Minneapolis to London in 1984, and I still remember the best songs I heard on the in-flight music I had never heard before: "(Birds Fly) Whisper to a Scream" by The Icicle Works, "68 Guns" by The Alarm, "It's my Life" by Talk Talk. Then we landed and I constantly saw posters of Prince in the film "Purple Rain." I couldn't get away from The Little Guy.
The video for Cry always creeped me out. I've never heard of the Eurogliders before but Heaven sounds like a song I would have listened to ad nauseam in the 80s.
I love these songs! Especially Beat So Lonely and Heaven. Some Kind of Wonderful was my favorite John Hughes movie and was filmed a town over from mine. There are a few of these songs that I never hear (except when I remember to put them on a playlist) and they are so catchy I just don't understand why they aren't played more. Two more of mine are Escalator of Life and Christian Boy. So good!!
For me it's The Kings - The Beat Goes On/Switchin' to Glide. I could even go with Strange Advance - World's Away, though they had a couple of other hits as well.
Canadians favorites
Never even heard number 2 or 3, but number 1 is a gorgeous song and video and I have loved it for years.
I'm delighted to see Charlie Sexton in this mix! In my opinion, he is a great talent that many people missed out on. He pops up playing on other peoples albums when I least expect it and it always makes me happy.
My top 5 80s bottled lightning songs :
5. Autograph- Turn Up the Radio
4. Midnight Oil- Beds Are Burning
3. T'pau- Heart And Soul
2. Giuffria- Call To the Heart
1. Alanah Miles- Black Velvet
I know, Black Velvet did not reach number one on the charts until early 1990 but it was released in 1989.
That T’pau song, so good!
Midnight Oil also did a song called Dead Heart that is awesome
Of all these I only have "Cry" still in my playlist. I heard this for the first time coming over the speakers while shopping in a store. This was before Shazam so it took me months before I actually identified the artist and title. But its been there ever since. The sweeping vocals take my breath away every time. I would add to your one hit list with the following: (Make me do) Anything You Want by A Foot in Cold Water, Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do) by Bill Amesbury, Call It Love by Poco, and the Partland Brother's Soul City. Yeah I know they are not all 80's.
Adam, you are spot on with Cry. I loved this song so much. I never owned it,and rarely ever heard it outside of MTV, but I’ve found myself humming or singing a verse even to this day. There is just something so primal in the ache in the way it is sung. Really hits you, and it is a shame this didn’t get more play than it did.
"Some kind of wonderful" = BEST 80's movie EVER!!
“Cry” was also covered by The Philosopher Kings in the late 90s and went to #10 on the Canadian Music charts.
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!❤️
I am so happy you included Heaven by the Eurogliders! They were one of my favorite bands in the 80s and did not get the recognition they deserved. Complex arrangements, catchy tunes, and excellent vocals. Hardly anyone even knows about them in the USA but they were so good! I am so glad you chose them for this video!
Hello there✋✋how are you doing today? Hope you are having a good day? God bless you!❤️
The use of "Cry" at the culmination of the Miami Vice episode "Definitely Miami" would become one of the most memorable moments of all time in a show known for it's memorable moments, and a widespread favorite among the show's hardcore fans.
Easily one of my top three favorite episodes of Miami Vice!
@@davidhogansrevenge4604 I'd call it 1) Prodigal Son, 2) Definitely Miami, and 3) Bushido. A lot of folks would disagree on the latter, but I was a big fan of the Castillo character.
@@dalekidd420 I am so pleased to hear you mention Bushido. It is my favorite episode that does not center on Crockett & Tubbs. I think that Bushido & Duty and Honor where the best Castillo centric episodes even better than the 2 parter Golden Triangle. My all time favorite episode is Evan.
