  • Today, it’s a 1986 radioactive rocker that was one of five Top 5 hits from the exceptional album Invisible Touch. Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks of Genesis were on top of the world in 1986. Phil himself had 11 top ten hits counting solo and with the band… Non one had ever done that before solo and with a band. . The story of the hit single Land of Confusion which seems to describe our day to a tee. With a music video that had the spitting image puppets, this song still resonates today.

It’s time for another edition of #1 in our hearts where we cover a song that was great, so impactful that it should’ve been #1 on the billboard Hot 100 but for reason’s we’ll find out… It came up short… Today we’re covering a song that is probably remembered better for its music video than it’s #4 ranking on the Billboard Hot 100. It really is one of the most memorable music videos of the 80s. It’s a song that describes our day in detail. It’s Genesis with Land of Confusion.
So, by the time Genesis released their 13th studio album Invisible Touch on June 6, 1986, the band had basically taken over the world. There’s no doubt, the 80s were good to Genesis, who at this time consisted of Tony Banks on keyboards and synth bass, Mike Rutherford on guitar, and Phil Collins on drums and lead vocals. These former prog-rockers had transformed themselves into an all-out pop-rock powerhouse. 1980’s Duke, 1981’s Abacab, and 1983’s Genesis all did well across the world. And in the US, they went #11, #7 and #9 respectively, churning out 6 Top 40 singles. But if the commercial success of Genesis wasn’t enough, there were also solo careers to consider. In February 1985 Phil Collins released his third solo record, the massive 12-time platinum #1 album, No Jacket Required. It contained a slew of chart champions… That’s two #1 hits, a #4 spot, and a #7 placement.
Add to that ‘chart-topping cuts’ Against All Odds and Separate Lives and the #2 Phillip Bailey collaboration Easy Lover, and it’s clear Collins was one of the 80s’ biggest acts. Most think that the 80s were ruled by Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, George Michael and Whitney Houston but from 1985-1987 between Solo and Genesis, Phil was bigger than anyone and he looked more like your cool uncle than a pop idol...

A ton of talent in that band, not to mention the great Peter Gabriel, who left in the mid-70s. Yet another example of the incredible British influence in the music of that era. Sad to see all the health troubles that Phil has experienced in recent years, though. I used to call Phil the best scream-singer in the business. It's been sad, of late, to see him struggling through ballads from a chair on the stage. And the drumsticks have long since been set aside. ... I still wonder, though, if he's got anything left in the songwriting tank.

I go through phases where I decide to revisit Phil Collins' catalogue and listen to very little else while I'm working my way through it and very few musicians can help me time travel back to the 80s better than Phil can. Very few people have stepped out from behind the drum kit to take on the songwriting and lead vocals and even fewer have remained at the drums while tackling the songwriting and lead vocals. What an absolute legend.

My favorite 80s band! Three master songwriters! And Phil was my favorite drummer. I got to see them here in Malaga, Spain, in the Invisible Tour in May 1987! The huge stadium jam packed, and since I'm tiny, and had waited for hours, I got right to the center of the first row! It was so cute to see through the paper Phil used with his song explanations in phonetic Spanish. See through, because of the lights!
Then a little known cult gem: Mike Rutherford's 1st solo album, Smallcreep's Day, made when Phil had to leave the band for a year to Canada to try to solve his marriage, right before Phil's 1st solo album. Listen to Smallcreep's Day. It's a masterpiece.
Oh, and Mike and the Mechanics! What a group, especially with Paul Carrack!
I lived that video, Land of Confusion, though the band themselves weren't excited about their spitting image puppets!
Wow! I just heard that snippet of Abacab right as I was typing! One of my favorite Genesis pop songs.
From their Prog Rock era, my favorite album was Selling England by the Pound, the first one I heard by them, at age 15, back in 1978 at my cousin's house in Madrid. I ran out and bought it!

Genesis was/is a band of brilliance and invisible touch was a brilliant CD. I played it almost every day when I left work. Land of confusion was strong; it hit mind and heart with a fist!
Phil Collins is a master of the stage. I went to his concert at The Palace in Pontiac, MI, on a stormy summer night, and the power went out after the first piece. Thousands of people in a dark, rapidly warming arena started a bit of rumbling and then the stage crew managed a single spot and Phil Collins walked out on the stage with a hand mic and he proceeded to do 20 or more minutes of standup - cold. He owned us, every one of us, from that moment on. The power came on and we went crazy! After that, he could have sung Row, row your boat and we would have loved it and him. He gave us a concert of perfection and we loved him for it! And me? I memorized all the songs on the cd.
The only concert that ever came close to that night was Sting at the Opera House in Detroit. We danced through that whole concert!
You've hit my heart with this video.

The people are divided, so “we the people” is moot. Our concerns and values have drifted apart. Our use of language altered. We cancel each other, taught for a generation or more to walk away from that which you do not agree. We knew it then, it just hadn’t hit us as hard. In the Eighties the problems of the sixties weren’t ours, we were free, amazingly free. The rules have been re written and continue to be. Our ability to speak freely is coming under attack, anything said can be used against one in any manner at the choosing of the powers that be. The first part of divide and conquer is clearly upon us. Even pessimism and realism are shunnable.
The feelings evoked by this and other presentations are powerful reminders that make me curious as to how we can ever get back what once was. But maybe once innocence and naïveté are gone, there is no going back. Thanks for a wonderful walk down memory lane. I will keep searching.

This was an awesome review of Land of Confusion. Spectacular light shows at these concerts. The most recent tour was also spectacular visually. The band members have aged considerably (so have I), but they definitely still have their chops.

Land of Confusion had the most awesome keyboard riffs. Tony Banks is the master of that heavy discordant sound. Domino was another point on the album that his signature sound elevated it. Too often overlooked is the Calling All Stations album, there are songs on there like The Dividing Line, Congo, and Alien Afternoon (among others) that Tony recaptures the same feel of Invisible Touch.

You pick my favourite era and music that I remember. 1986 I was 10. Big year in so many different ways. Phil Collins as the soundtrack as I became aware of the world. I have what in today's lingo might be called clips and fragments of 84 and 85. Before that it is just moments or images without context But this without knowing it, helped shape me. British influences like Doctor Who, the anti war/pro pacifisct messaging in 70s era Dr Who we saw in Canada thanks to the replay on the PBS stations that broadcasted across the US border. The writers then of the same generation as Genesis ( who sadly did NOT put it right) Gen X now in our 40s still have boomers hanging around. Refuse to retire and make way. Some nearing their 80s. Worse Silent Generation at the century mark who still meddle long after that kind of thinking should be fossilized and long forgotten. But my generation does its best. How many of us remember Reagan's Shining city on a hill speech. Later I learn that refers to the New Jerusalem of the book of Revelations. The shining hope at the end of strife, of turmoil. Of suffering and atrocity, that we have in our power to tear down the structures built by ' men of steel' to hold down humanity. That love and acceptance is the way. But yes righteous anger to injustice and evil is how we forge a stronger better, brighter more loving future.
This era. This song. That music, movies, culture inspire hope. Many things still do.
Good news is that all our problems are man made and human beings can choose to change. The idea that we are doomed. That the fight was lost long ago and there is nothing to do about it is the biggest lie. These men/women of steel fear true populism. You don't need to spin let us shrink ever expanding intrusion into our lives. Lets get out of the idea adults need permission to live our lives, work, love our families. That we need to do penance for the sins of past generations. Everything that keeps us divided instead of united and throwing off the shackles, is wasted energy. They feared it in the past 100 years ago. They won that fight and we got a century of war. Now the wheel comes back again. Again we can choose and this time choose not to fight. To embrace peace, tolerance, understanding, love of our neighbour as ourselves. The internet makes the difference. Information spreads so fast. Lies exposed before the narrative can be told. The combined power of the people united is more than any force can conquer. Use the tools to educate. Work at ground level and let's build up a structure of peace.
That is what this song means to me.
I will not despair. I will not surrender. Love will win in the end.

I also liked Phil’s deep perspectives with “We said Hello-Goodbye” as well as his social commentary in “Long Long Way To Go”, which was featured in a very poignant scene of Miami Vice. I wish artists would speak out against wrong like they did back in the 60s-80s instead of pushing current political agendas.
