Help!!! I’m trapped in Don Henley’s basement with 59 other people. It’s a copyright sweat shop. The conditions are horrible. He keeps saying, “you can clock out any time you want, but you can never leave.”
Afraid your stuck man :(
Can you ask him what the hell that song was about while you’re there?
I think it's about pedophilia. Drugging underage groupies.
It's an addiction you can never leave.
😀👍
You can go the distance, we’ll find out in the long ... oh, never mind!
Phil Collins doesn't mind people sharing his music on UA-cam. You might even say that he doesn't care anymore.
Aaron Clift...”Thank you, I’m here all week. Make sure to tip your waitresses...” Said you! 😂
Ugh..so bad..but I laughed. So take your thumbs up. :) My Stones cover has been up for years. If Rick's singing is that bad, mine must send wildlife scattering for cover!
Quartz P.S. the part about Phil Collins not minding - that was a “Take Me Home” reference. ;)
@@aaronclift Could also be am "I Don't Care Anymore" reference. So you hit it twice :)
i see what you did there, aaron.....
The younger people doing these reaction-videos are really shining a spotlight on all of these old bands and providing a fun way for new generations to discover their music.
True! But, they could also just turn on a radio (or watch Risky Business). In the Air Tonight is on ALL THE TIME.
Exactly. These bands celebs etc are only hurting themselves
Its no longer that simple Melissa. No,one listens to the radio as much and the radio only circulates so many at times. It's obsolete
@@melissa007ish this isn't the 80s. The radio is no longer the mainstream
@@melissa007ish May Be the younger generation has never even heard of risky business so UA-cam FB etc would help promote stuff
Phil is so down to earth. My daughter and I saw his Not Dead Yet concert. He was a truly amazing guy.
I'm 69 YO, haven't bought music in 20 years. But lately, I've been watching UA-cam reactions, and because of them, I now own Journey, Metallica, Styx, Sinatra, and Thin Lizzy. . .music I never owned or even heard before. Block it and I don't hear it. Don't block it and I buy it. Lesson to be learned.
It's pretty obvious to most people. Thes same guys were from the generation where managers paid radio stations to play their bands music to get the ball rolling. They now think their music is set in stone, and that it doesn't require listening to in order to be familiar with. It's foolish in the extreme.
STYX is the bomb!
@@GodInTheMachine "Never owned" category for Frankie.
Definitely. I've heard Pearl Jam in my youth but it didn't really 'stick', watched a short bit of Rick's first video on one of Pearl Jam's songs and *click*. That did it.
I am 67 years old, a child of the 60’s and 70’s era of music. Arguably the best music ever made (according to me). If it wasn’t for Rick, I wouldn’t have ever known about Pearl Jam’s music. Yes, I had heard of Pearl Jam, but never heard or listened to any of their music until Rick’s what makes this song great dissection of “Black”. I have since downloaded all their albums, and boy, are they great musicians or what! Here is me buying forgotten music of a past era because of Rick. This blocking of music is as stupid as cutting off your nose to spite your face. To all the music companies who block Rick’s channel, get a life!
I have to agree. I'm 60 yrs old myself and there are a lot of songs and artists that I have heard on Rick's channel here that I wouldn't have otherwise given the time of day. When he does what makes this song great I really love how he pulls the vocals out and plays just the vocals. This really provides the listener a great look or ear into the singers actual voice. In some cases a singers actual talent is masked a little by the music. Of course I love the music as well, but I just like the added benefit of actually hearing a singers voice in a capella. A great example of this is Alice Cooper singing "I never cry", or "You and Me". He is mainly known for his hard rockin ways. When you listen to these two songs, you get the chance to hear how beautiful his voice really is!
Allen Bullard , ditto from another 67 year old. 12/16/52
@AllenBullard- what a great comment, friend :) “Black” is one of my favorites I’m so excited you’ve discovered Pearl Jam!! And on a side note, music is like therapy to me, it is somewhat painful to have it taken away....especially when it just so happens that I’ve purchased the album multiple times over in Cassette, then CD, then digitally when I’ve lost my CD. I’ve paid for the music, over and over again. I enjoy discussions surrounding music, yet I’m not allowed to hear it on UA-cam or hear someone sample it??? It doesn’t make much sense to me.
Blessings 🤗
I am a child of the 90's and loved Pearl Jam for years. They made some great albums up until Binaural but after that began their decline. Plus I knew Vedder was pretentious but didn't realize his whole "poor me I'm a misunderstood rock star. I'm not like those other rock stars that love money and fame." blah blah blah. Check out Iron and Wine if you like mellow acoustic music. Albums "The Creek Drank The Cradle" or "Our Endless Numbered Days" are a good start.
I don't know how I feel about Pearl jam anymore. I guess I've changed a lot since the 90's and they have too, and it's ok if I share the good times and be on my way. If you have a chance to see Pearl Jam live though (and the tickets were cheap) I'd suggest going to see them . They do long shows but I don't know how Eddie's voice is holding up. I haven't seen him sing live lately.
This is such a nice comment and I can feel connected to it even though i'm 29 years old. For me this is the power that music can bring into this crazy, CRAZY world and should be free to promote.
Another great example is Kansas' Carry on Wayward Son, which was used in the show Supernatural, many times. In fact, during San Diego Comic Com, Kansas came to the show's panel discussion and played it live. Now thousands and more young people know about this fantastic progressive band!
Janis Ian doesn’t block. She even comments on the sites who play her music thanking them for sharing her music.
"What would you do if I sang out of tune?
Would you straight up demonetize me?
..."
Brilliant! pmsl

“Lend me your ear, don’t repeat what I’ve taught because I am just way too greedy.” “ I’ll get by with a lot of help from my fans. Oh, I’ll get by ‘cuz I don’t need new fans. Oh, I need more but I don’t have any new fans.”
❤
If I remember correctly, when Lost In Vegas started doing reaction videos to Rush music (which turned those guys onto prog rock music), Rush sent them a bunch of CDs and promo materials as a thank you. THAT’S how you do it!
That was epic.
Classy move, reaching out to a fan like that.
True. And Gojira sent them stuff & had them come to their show to meet them.
Those guys are great!!! Love their vids!!
That's because Rush are not just a legendary band, but they're also extraordinarily decent human beings. They're proof positive that nice guys only finish last if they give up and quit. I was in 8th grade when Moving Pictures came out; Rush album releases were high points of my teenage years. (Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows.) It makes me incredibly happy to see their music reaching so many new people, new generations. In my day, Rush fans were sort of a secret club. Guitarist Alex Lifeson has called Rush "The original 'alternative' band." I agree. :)
Not only will In the Air Tonight get more play now, it’ll be more in the public consciousness for more years to come to the new listeners, so more likely to get continued play for years to come. So re-charting to new fans isn’t just short term gain, it helps the legendary status of the song/artist for years to come.
Genesis has been my favorite band for a while but I've just now come to really appreciate the genius of Phil's solo work.
Blocked music will be forgotten and die. Unblocked music will live. So freaking simple.
Definitely not true, but I sympathize with your sentiment. They're inhibiting their own free advertising
They should ask Rick Astley about this ;) Quote: "Astley has seen his performance career revitalized by the meme's popularity."
rickroll :D
Chem is 10000% correct!. They had interviewed Rick Astley a few months ago here in Melbourne, Australia on GOLD104 during their morning drive time program with Christian O'Connell & Rick A stated that the memes have kept the song coming back, again & again
It's crazy, but the man embraced the meme, and he actually released a pianoforte version of that song. It's crazy, but the man embraced the meme and it's amazing
Yes, one of the memes before the word meme existed 😄
Rick Astley! Wow, one of my favourites! On second thoughts, maybe his songs should be blocked - it's just a question of good taste really.
Remember the line "Home taping is killing Music"? This was in the 70'/ the 80's. Thing is, when I heard a taped album I went out and bought it.I liked to know what it was I would buy. I didn't like the inferior hissy quality of a poorly recorded tape. Also liked the fact of owning the artwork and album of course .The music publishers /companies shoot themselves in the foot.
Heck the last 4 albums I bought i listened to songs first on UA-cam. I am currently trying to track down 2 more I want to purchase after hearing.
I always liked the satire, “Home f@$%ing is killing the prostitution industry.”
there's a story about Atahualpa Yupanki, an incredible argentinian musician: he was walking in the countryside and heard a group of women harvesting a field singing one of his songs. He stopped and asked: who's song is that? and they answered: it' s ours.
Atahualpa said in that moment he realized he had accomplished his goal as an artist. His art was now the art of the people.
It would be awesome if you could analize some of his music, it's far from your regular content but you would be amazed at how many latin american followers would love to watch this.
That really touches on the idea of ownership. Ownership, as we see it, is such a clunky, unrealistic thing. It's truly only supported by the threat of force.
He was also a committed communist tortured by the Peronist government in the early fifties and had to go out on exile
Cool story bro
I used to put my daughter to bed with a recording of his “Duermete Chanquito”
@Brendan Cronin you are probably too distant from the rural workers reality to understand how this is perfectly understandable in their context.
Imagine paying 60 people to ensure that your music isn't heard by new audiences.
:D It's so bizarre. He could get free money if he just stuck to demonetizing, instead of blocking.
But, he'd rather spend even more money to have people sit in an office and decline said free money.
It is sooo stupid !! i have discovered a ton of music from people who realise a little free promotion ( yes free , the Artist is not paying a penny ) will help them to get noticed and maybe someone will buy a disk or an mp3 or play on spotify. Then maybe all their albums will get download and then that person starts promoting that band/artist to his or her friends etc. etc. etc. It's not rocket science.
Hi, I'm Don Henley and you don't know me or, my music. Just know that I'm going to great lengths to make sure that you never do.
That's what happens with greed. You end up with less. Karma.
@@Timinator2K10 "Hi, I'm Don Henley and you don't know me or, my music. Just know that I'm going to great lengths to make sure that you never do"
This needs to be on a T-Shirt!
Monty Python did the same thing years ago. Allowed high quality copies of their stuff on the internet and the saw an increase in sales for their merchandise
If I recall, they were upset with the poor quality most clips had, so they used their own channel to upload the higher quality versions too.
I found them on UA-cam back in the mid 2000’s, and all their clips were like 240p or worse. Glad they finally let the HD versions be released
It was getting silly indeed
This is how folk music thrives. The very essence of it is hearing it shared, played, and spread. When the music industry started its manic push to fight piracy, many underground and independent artists resisted it, because the truth is, music thrives when it's shared. It's the lawyers and pencil-pushers who worry about scraping every penny out of a piece of music, and the artists who agree with that behavior have been duped. Music is infinite, until you lock it down. Phil Collins didn't _lose_ money by having those kids make their video, and he wouldn't have _lost_ money even had they monetized it. Musicians profit when their music gets heard. Musicians suffer when corporate entities gatekeep that experience.
I think the thing that some artist (like Phil Collins and Jon Anderson) get is the fact that these videos that show people enjoying a particular song, or Rick educating laymen in the craft of song composition, is that if you like a song by a particular artist, you’ll go and listen to more of their work. Sure royalties aren’t going to be as large if the song is 30, 40, or more, years old, but I bet Messers Collins and Anderson feel great knowing they have another generation of fan, stemming from a UA-cam video. Keep up the good work.
I said this once before... After Rick talked about King Crimson I was going to buy some of their music. When they blocked Rick's work I decided not to buy their music. They should be so lucky to have somebody talking about their music 50 years later 🙄 These artists only hurt themselves.
How do you feel about Prince? While he was alive it was impossible to find any of his music on youtube.
King Crimson have their own youtube channel, if you're interested in hearing the music. And Robert is still alive (77yo). Not saying he's right or wrong, that's not up to me. And the reason is very simple, I don't own his music; he does. How he wants it delivered is up to him.
Despite opening for the Rolling Stones for their 3rd gig and having Jimi Hendrix jumping up and down in excitement at their 2nd gig, King Crimson have never been exactly a household name outside of Prog Rock circles since 1969 and as far as I can tell they never will be.
It never effected the music. King Crimson was more a compulsion than a popularity contest. They had 1 single hit 80 on the billboard charts and that was in 1970, that's it. From 11 studio albums.
With 19 live albums and 19 compilation albums outside of Collectors' Box Sets, not only is their legacy pretty much set from here on out but they probably don't miss your dollar either. Or mine since 2003: I don't go in for expanded editions, live albums or boxed sets. Mr Fripp has enough of my money already.
I'll say this though, if you allow his perceived lack of vision to prevent you from experiencing King Crimson's music: it's you that's missing out, not Robert Fripp.
(He's already heard them all.) XD
I remember some years back, I was on a Phil Collins message board and Phil himself did regular check-ins to answer questions. I also went to see his First Final Farewell Tour and he opened up the night by talking about the horrible reviews he was getting because he was only playing his hits. He said, "I'm not doing this tour for the critics; I'm doing it for you." He's just an everyday guy who lives for the fact that PEOPLE enjoy his music and couldn't care less about the business side of things.
I was talking to a guy a few years back who did artist relations for a record label back in the day. Phil Collins was his absolute favourite of all of the artists he looked after. A nice guy and a total professional. If he agreed to do something, he did it, even if he wasn't feeling great that day. Other acts would flounce off at the slightest provocation.
I heard a story about him interacting with fans and he sounded like such a great guy. It is so great to hear he is getting a bump in popularity.
I saw him play drums for Robert plant in Buffalo.... The same near he also played with Genesis in Buffalo.... On the mama tour......
I have heard that for many years, if his schedule permitted, you could hire him to come play on your recording for basically union scale (and probably travel expenses if needed). He didn't upcharge a bazillion dollars because he was THE LEGENDARY MUSIC DUDE. And he's an amazingly good drummer, so he would show up, lay down his part, shake hands and make nice with everyone, and be gone in about an hour or so.
A 2nd Opynyn lol, I believe it. I mean his name is “Phil” doesn’t sound the least like a fancy guy 🤣
Also, it’d be pretty awesome to get him on your record.
"Out on the road today I saw a DeadHead sticker on a cadillac" Maybe Don Henley and the Grateful Dead estate should block each other. so they would each know how it feels.
Maybe include Cadillac and anyone who drove a Caddie with a deadhead sticker. Shows the absurdity of all this, copyright, patents and IP laws are bastardizations of what they were intended to be.
One reason why I love Disturbed. Right after their Ten Thousand Fist album at a concert they said buy it, download it, we don't care how you get it we just want you to enjoy our music and if we we're in this for the money we would of stopped a long time ago
Thumbs up to Phil Collins ,nice to know that budding drummers will be playing that sensational drum break for generations to come ,
Yeah. Cool fact. His kid plays drums for him. His kid is really good.
Prince used to block because, according to him, UA-cam didn’t respect and pay the artists well, which is true. But, like this video shows, blocking prevented his music from being known in different audiences
Also was a different UA-cam back then
There's an artist named Steven Wilson (also the main guy in Porcupine Tree) who used to be pretty adamant against streaming and people playing his music on UA-cam. Steven is a *HUGE* fan of Prince. When Prince died, Steven did a cover of one of Prince's songs as part of his next concert - and was shocked when it seemed like no one in his audience recognized the song. So then he realized that blocking *all* of his own music was probably a bad idea. After 10-15 years, everyone will forget about you, no matter *how* big you were.
There is also an ironic epilogue to this. Steven uploaded his cover of Prince's song (as done in the concert) to UA-cam - and the video was blocked by Prince's estate...
@@garanceadrosehn9691 For years you couldn't find Prince's or Bob Dylan's work on UA-cam (two of my favorite artists)... although that has started to change in the last couple-three years. I'm glad of it because more people should know their catalogs.
And for anyone who's never heard Porcupine Tree's "In Absentia" album, you should stop what you're doing and go listen to it right now. It's that good.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 - I'll second the vote for "In Absentia". Great album!
@@garanceadrosehn9691 If you think that epilogue is ironic: Prince covered Creep, by Radiohead, at Coachella. Someone uploaded it on UA-cam and Prince tried to block it.
"Do I care? ..No. Of course I don't. Let them listen. I'm just glad they are getting to know my music. I'm happy to grow a new fanbase. It's fine by me." - Phil Collins
Well said Phil. The guy's worth nearly $200m, he's not selfish enough to care. He's had his career. It's not as if he's going to start all over, and sell another 300 million records. He's just happy to know that kids are loving his music.
Kudos to him.
That's the difference of a musician who loves the craft and wants the passion of his music to be felt by generations
Well said.

Phil has plenty of FU money. the rest for him is just pure FUN!

Hats off to Phil Colins for recognizing the value in what is essentially free advertising, This great music will now be on countless spotify playlists and many will even buy the vinyl. So this equates to much more then the youtube revenue alone. Forward thinkers.
Long term vs short term.
Maybe if enough people get into Phil Collins, they'll realize he wrote more than two songs.
Similarly yet different from how Rick Astley is now making use of his Internet fame.
I don't really want to have another round of hearing those songs everywhere I go. Once per lifetime is enough.
RogueReplicant Unpopularopinion: sussudio and Easy Lover are better than In the air tonight
That's funny: my singing is so bad, the algorithm cannot identify the song! Love you Rick!
Heck, that’s how I’ve written a few of my songs. I tried to play a cover of something, and botched it so badly that it ended up being its own thing, unrecognizable from the “original”.
J. Cheek Let’s hear more of Rick’s singing!
Are you singing the same song if you're singing out if tune?
Rick had to be singing worse than he usually does.... by that I mean off pitch, almost tone deaf, etc. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a stellar producer or musician who couldn’t at least hold a tune. That video makes more sense now, thanks Rick for explaining what you were doing.
"Billy, does the coif look good?" "Billy, get me another pressed black t-shirt" "Billy, is my car washed yet?"
What these artists don't under-stand is that UA-cam is what radio was 40 years ago, free promotion. The whole point of releasing singles was so they would get played on the radio, people would hear it, and go buy the album. Then in the 80s it was videos on MTV. Today's social media has replaced those other mediums, but some people are still locked in the past, they haven't kept up with the times.
Couldn't agree more. I never have the radio on, but I stream youtube several times a day
in the 80's you didn't bring your TV with you everywhere. Most of their money is made at shows. When was the last time you bought an album? Exactly.
Difference is, artists got paid by how much air play they received on the radio. Those $ would last years and years after their records stopped selling. No such case with UA-cam.
Radio gives money to them... UA-cam not if it is shown not on their own channel. That is the problem to them.
My kids and several of tjeir friends listen to 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music because of me and my wife sharing our music and showing them videos and telling them stories of the best musical period in our life time. I got into all the magnificent Blues artists from the 30’s and 40’s from UA-cam and listening to other artists and musicians talk about their influences. Musicians get new life through new listeners, pretty simple Don and when you die, you can’t take your money, ask Glenn.
This is so funny. I am 51 and I just started getting my 22 yr old son to watch your "what makes this song great" videos with me. One night having a few beers I pulled up your Roundabout video and he went crazy.. I KNOW THIS SONG he yelled, its on my Spotify play list! I heard it on Joe Joe's.
Lesson to the 'blockers', you are shooting yourselves in the foot. Rick knows what he is talking about. Watch his enthusiasm when he steps through your music, sit back and appreciate that a good chunk of 1.73 million of Ricks subs are hearing your music for the first time and loving it. Thanks Rick for all you do.
My son has Roundabout on his playlist too even though he would otherwise not be seen dead listening to prog rock.
My son has discovered a lot of music I love, including Roundabout, because of JoJo. JoJo's creator is a huge classic rock fan.
Rick talking to Jon Anderson? Can’t wait. We need a Phil Collins interview, Rick! One where we can actually hear him talk about the nitty gritty of drumming, songwriting, gated verb, Genesis, Brand X... etc!
NightShift Gated Reverb! Sold many Alesis micro verbs.........
Any of the Genesis guys would be cool to see rick interview
I'm glad Rush doesn't block.
Yeah, Rush was a great band, great people.
What I tell my wife, Rush is Rush period.
Because they aren't narcissists lol (somehow). They managed the impossible, not letting ego interfere while doing decades of world class performances. Something something LSD
The Grateful Dead did that too to some degree but Garcia's estate is in the hands of a literal evil witch (he was pretty naive sometimes and got tricked a LOT, either that or just willingly put himself in harm's way)
And of course all the others mentioned in this video that don't have this archaic dragon hoarding gold mentality, good on them
Tool and Phil Collins ( and others)understand that we all get better when we lift everyone up and share our knowledge and experience.
Elitists protect their secret knowledge out of fear and greed. Thanks Rick for lifting us up! You are literally making musicians, it is a beautiful thing. 👍
Yeah, I think Tool understands that their fans are rabid enough that they're going to buy all the music they make no matter what. Also, they make good money from having excellent live shows, artwork and overall presentation.
JenArt T
Well Said!
Elitist like Metallica suing Napster...
It really is no secret when people like Rick can decipher it for us. These blockers are trying to suppress common knowledge! It's laughable, some of my favourite bands from my youth who promoted the new free attitudes of the day have turned out to be greedy, grasping, covetous old misers. Down to the dung heap of history with them! I don't say that lightly, I am disillusioned that they have been corrupted by their success.
It's also how they can pick up new fans from new generations. Phil got to #2, not because his old fans jumped on buying the new format, a new set of fans was created and wanted it.
Bands that suppress their music will have it die in a tomb with them. Maybe it'll get unearthed again in the distant future with life of the artist + 70 years copyrights. To make a related age analogy to artists, a 26 year old Einstein released 4 major papers in 1905 which helped him burst onto the scene and eventually win the Noble prize. If that was copyrighted music, we're 15 years away from that dropping.
We're literally trying to help and promote these guys, and they're like, NO. So frustrating. You're the man Rick.
Jon Anderson is one of the best guys in the business. Openminded, creative, approachable and friendly, and grateful for every bit of success he's ever had.
I like him but that's not what his old band thinks.
When you did a "What Makes This Song Great" on "Tears for
Fears" it rekindled my love for then and sent me on several years of listening I to them.
I had never Imagined them bring so complex.
You are 100% right on my book.
Met Phil Collins in Toronto and was one of the most memorable conversations over coffee/tea I ever had. I think he was only upset by the fact I shared who my favourite all time singers were and Jon Anderson was ahead of him.
Remember the game Rock Band, that game was responsible for kids getting introduced to 70's rock.
Guitar Hero showed them who the Rock Legends were as well!
Still have it, still play it! 🤘
Absolutely. GH 3 turned my younger brother into a huge Scorpions fan.
Also, the in house musicians who recorded the cover version that make up most of those games don't get nearly enough credit. They actually ruined 'Paranoid' for me. The cover version from the games was so good, I can't listen to the original anymore without it sounding off.
@@patrickb8134 I have the exact same experience with Paranoid.
I got so much work as a guitar teacher off the back of that game
Rick my son wanted to play guitar because of Roundabout and JOJO. Because of this my son deep dived into my music and found Phil Collins, The Who and more. My oldest son found out about Queen and all of these other songs. This led to us finding your channel and getting a better appreciation of the history of music. Sharing our enjoyment of this music is only going to help these artists.
I agree totally Rick. They are losing free advertising. Why don’t they get it. I have bought music myself after watching and listening to something I have never heard before or music that I haven’t heard in years comes back to life for me. That’s only because of UA-cam. Keep making these videos Rick and maybe these older bands will finally see the light. Cheers.
Just to let you know, I'm 61 teaching myself guitar and I watch your channel and love every bit of it. Keep it going dude. 👍👍👍✌✌✌
Rush doesn't block, there are so many reactions out there for Rush. Their legacy continues because of this. This is the new way to get popular. Great points Rick!
someone ought to assemble a chart of definite blockers, definite non-blockers, and the various in-between categories - both for creatives to reference when deciding who to make videos about, and for the rest of us to reference when deciding which musicians/groups/labels to support.

You don't go out looking for a job dressed like that, do you Lebowski?
@@Shrubchucker Let me explain something to you. I am not Mr. Lebowski. You’re Mr. Lebowski. I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.
The Dude also lost his Creedence tapes.
It was probably over the day Don Henley saw a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac....this is probably when he decided he was gonna be a blocker too,.
The Dude hates Don Henley
Johnny: "He's my grandpa."
Billy: "No way! Your grandpa is Phil Collins? That's so cool!"
Tommy: "Big deal, my grandpa is Don Henley."
Billy: "Who?"
This is like the final analysis of Napster: the people who used it BOUGHT MORE MUSIC. The RIAA has been dead wrong on, essentially, every technological advancement in the industry. The twins prove there's benefit to making content more available.
It's the same as the bullshit logo on LP sleeves that said home taping is killing music and it's illegal. People taped an album, gave it to their mate and their mate might later go out and buy every album by that artist on LP, then CD, then remastered CD then 24 bit remaster, then 5.1 surround sound, etc.
Blockers are just hurting themselves. I had my daughters high school choir video blocked for copyright. Stupid. I got like 3 subscribers and just wanted to share with family.
Even on a public image level those things are so stupid, they seem like evil greedy stupid people. Why do you block things like a guy teaching music theory? Or a high school choir??
Meanwhile the guys that actually rip stuff and put in on youtube don't give a F..k, they just alter the pitcth, or the frequency, or just create a new youtube channel, and google can't delete those videos fast enough. It's just dumb!!
Public high school? That content should automatically be public domain.
Same thing happened to me with a high school performance of a Queen’s “Somebody to Love “. It got taken off UA-cam , music is meant to be shared 🗣
It's rare for artists to own their music, it's the publishing companies that do the blocking. Even if the artist calls and tells them to stop blocking the publisher can simply ignore them.
True
I would never have gotten into Steely Dan without your channel, and I listen the hell out of them!
Steely Dan is amazing. An all-time great band.
Same!
Me too! They were just some band I knew my dad liked well enough in the early 80's. Now I'm 44 and wishing I could have seen them in their heyday.
Plot twist: It wasn't Rick singing out of tune, it was Mick Jagger.
In the immortal words of the great Jimmy James - “FREE ADVERTISING...that’s something money just can’t buy!” 😃
the best character to ever be in a sitcom
This is how the music died. Destroyed by lawyers, corporations, and politicians claiming art is intellectual property.
jajajah86 actually, that’s excellent advice.
It's not the bureaucrats who are at fault here this time though. This is 100% the fault of the head-up-their-asses artists like Don Henley who hate the idea of new forms of media and try and block it any way possible.
Lawyers in Love.
Come on, art is IP but just not 100%. Almost everything has been done and almost everyone lends (or steals) ideas. That doesn't mean that anyone can start pressing cards from my paintings an making money from it.
Easy and quick deals between producers is the way. Unless the creator makes the content public domain.
Total blockers are just foolish though.
Funny tooting that horn on UA-cam. The page, that intentionally and out of pure greed is trying to destroy copyright. Without copyright, the music industry and especially the writers and artists would not have come this far. And now they are all going back to being beggars. Rick ist very selfish here. Did not think this trough.
In the late 80’s and 90’s, I DJ’d weddings, party’s, what ever was needed. I paid an ASCAP fee once a year, so ACSCAP could pay artist for the songs I played at functions. Why doesn’t UA-cam follow ASCAP like DJ, Radio Stations, even elevator music. It’s a great concept and it’s worked for years?
@Derek Charette actually in Germany they have an agreement with GEMA, before that many music related videos were not available in Germany. And it works, so there should be a possibility for ACSCAP too
Your assessment of the "zero tolerance policy" being counter intuitive is so spot on. Funny how you mention Fleetwood Mac, I believe there was a short video on another social media platform ( TikTok ) showing a skateboarder with their music on it - it went viral and that song went something close to No.1 again - Mick Fleetwood himself sought out the skateboarder and thanked him ( with gifts - and not small either ) I'm an old guitar teacher from way back and have shied away from youtube because it is absolutely necessary to play examples of songs to students so they can make the connections they need to make to be able to learn and improve. UA-cam and blockers are taking away one of the fundamental things one needs to teach - the EXAMPLE - and shortchanging themselves in the process
It’s important for you to talk about this Rick and we appreciate it. Your preserving modern music history. History is always a story, the story we keep passing down, and it’s language!! It disappears when it can’t be referenced. So it’s important and appreciated. Music means too much to let this stuff go and not keep bringing it to new generations
Rick talking about Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is like two universes colliding. I want Araki and Rick to do a video together now and talk about fair use in art. So many characters in Jojo are named after bands or songs, and a lot of them end up having their names changed because of copyright issues in different countries.
JoJo is a prime example of this. So many bands and artists are going to stay relevant because of JJBA for years to come. Not as directly as say Guitar Hero or Rockband has done, but the exact same concept. So many people looked into King Crimson after part 5 as well because he was the main villain’s stand(fighting spirit). They obviously had to get permission to use the name. Funny how that works eh?
Half the characters in jojo are based off classic rock/metal icons
Do you know Robert Fripp is a fan and posted an image from the manga in his online diary?
I had to do a hard double take when I heard him say Jojo's lol
@@BillyDrinksMilk I can't agree more, I got into so many bands because of it and a character being likeable especially made me want to listen to the band/artist
You should lay off Don Henley. He’s under a lot of stress trying to finish his latest composition, “Get off my lawn!”
He's also struggling to learn the drum parts for his Shaggs tribute band.
Next album title: N.I.M.B.Y.

:D Perfect!

Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" sales just went up 374% after appearing in a tiktok video.
And one of my "old guy" gripes is that a lot of music is getting lost because people below a certain age just don't know about it. Thanks Rick for pointing that out, and some of why that is.
Isn’t it sad that the big ‘blockers’ like the Beatles, The Stones, Fleetwood Mac and the others fail to recognise their own use and abuse of blues and rock and roll songs when they played live starting out. They didn’t pay performing rights when they played the Cavern. They learned their instruments through copying and performing. Yet, they now take the moral high ground and see YT use as a form of theft. As Rick states in this video, in truth it is promotion.
Well stated bro....
Big true ✊🏻
I agree with everything you're saying, but I don't think the 2nd lineup of Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham as new members) used and abused the blues (to my knowledge). The first lineup; yes. As well as the Beatles and Stones. Absolutely correct.
Hypocrisy knows no bounds. Metallica pretty much built their career on music sharing when they had no audience and it suited them. But they came down hard on Napster when that suited them. I guess they and other artists are free to do whatever they want, but they also need to look at the bigger picture.
R You Don’t Know people were literally stealing music on Napster but Metallica does NOT block videos on UA-cam.
I'm a huge Steely Dan fan; 'Kid Charlemene' was never a favorite tune of mine, until your 'What Makes This Song Great?' video. I've gone back and uploaded into my playlist a lot more Led Zepplin because of your videos. Joni Mitchell's music, which I've always adored, has taken on a higher level of appreciation by me because of your videos. Some of these artists are destroying their legacy into posterity by fighting these videos.
I 👍 agree Gotten some moldy oldies from this youtibr channel
Peter Ford Me too. I missed LZ growing up, probably because there was jus too much to listen to at the time (I’m 70). After discovering Ric in 2018, I have them all and better yet, I understand them.
Top comment! Yes, this says it all!!
It's so hard for new artists to make money these days. Very few will ever have the lifestyles of the bands that sold millions and made millions prior to the computer age. For these rich bastards and the rich estates that block and demonetize what is essentially free advertising for music which is not played on mainstream radio anymore is outrageous , they should be happy that there are people out there promoting and enjoying music that is probably in their dads record collection if he still has it. I bought a new Hotel California CD, and after hearing about Henley I wished I hadn't. I always buy the CD or occasionally the vinyl of artists I like partly to be fair and partly for the artwork and lyrics also it gives you a history over the years of how your life was going and how extreme your taste could be at some points and yet mainstream at other times, it also shows your maturity level or lack of it through the songs that really got you. Just better than an ipod Although I have filled a few of them as well and they sure do save space but music sounds best on a decent hi fi on vinyl or a good CD player with good speakers that can reproduce all the great work done in the studio these days to make great music. I don't get the death of hifi for the common man it seems only the wealthy can afford a great hifi now. There are a few places doing good mail order gear and Ebay if your skint and take a chance on twenty year old stereo systems or even older but when you get it right and crank up the sound for that 45 year old pink floyd record on your old ebay hi fi and the sheer power of the bass and guitar solo just blow you away it makes listening to your music a truly great pastime not just junk music that gets deleted when your bored to make space for the latest crap the corporations want you to buy and download from apple. It costs them nothing no printing, no product to make ,no vinyl to print, no CDs to burn,
Jim Watson After pulling my CDs out of storage I realize how much more valuable they are in an age of Spotify and Apple Music. Now I will scour these vintage record stores for CD's as well as vinyl!
This is so obviously true. Look at the Eagles. You never hear their music anymore, because they're so tight with copyright claims. Soon it'll be like they never existed. No one will have heard of them.
Who?
... and nothing of value would be lost.
Yep, had never heard anything outside of Hotel California until a Vulfpeck live show where they covered "One Of These Nights" slipped through the cracks.
That would be awesome. A world where the stupid fhkhn Eagles never existed.
The only Eagles songs I wanna hear are the ones with awesome Joe Walsh guitar solos. Other than that, eh, not so much...
There are so many Genesis live bootlegs on UA-cam, it's like nearly every gig ever nowadays and this will bring all kinds of people to their whole back catalogue.
I was too young, at the time, but if I had a time machine, I would use it to go to a 80s Genesis show, while they were touring with Chester Thompson, with both him and Collins on drums. I can watch and listen to degraded copies of those live shows, and my jaw just stats dropped for an hour.
When you're an artist that blocks, you're just adding another brick in the wall between your music and potential younger audiences of millions. They're spiting themselves. If Don Henley wants it, let him kill off the Eagles music for anyone born after 2000.
The content you deliver us through your channel has definitely higher quality than almost every TV show or traditional radios. MTV, por example, never made something like what you generously do for music.
Chicago and Christopher Cross have both praised 'reaction' videos - if not a lot of others
Christopher Cross is a class act. I'm glad he recovered from the covid-19.
When I watch your what makes this song great, I go over to spotify and end up listening to at least 3 or 4 of that bands songs. Most of the time several times.
I love that Andy Partridge supplied the stems for Mayor Of Simpleton.
Any chance you could interview Phil Collins about this subject?
Is crazy that 2 months later Dreams by Fleetwood Mac got the bigest bump ever to any of the examples from a dude on a skate in TikTok... if it was for Lindsay Buckingham's state that would have being blocked. Hope his position on fair use changed.
I agree with this 100%. They are making is harder for young musicians to discover and appreciate their music. One of the best parts of teaching private lessons is teaching new concepts to a student and being able to tie it back to a one of the classic hits. I have introduced so much great, older music to a younger generation by getting them excited about using a new technique, fill, groove, etc. in a classic rock song. If they would allow us to do this through UA-cam and other online methods, they would gain new listeners by the thousands!
Can you imagine how tickled Phil C was when his song surged again, guess the blockers will never experience that feeling
I feel sad for Don Henley. He's clearly losing sleep every night, worried that someone, somewhere, is listening to The Eagles, and he's not getting paid for it.
If Henley had his way you would have to rent right to play, you would have to buy a subscription to the Eagles. lol.
...but he oh so easily could be!
dwc1964 ...GOOD!!
And back in the day he insisted the new Eagles album retail for whatever the going rate was when he found out the record company planned an MSRP $1 higher, figuring people would pay it. I feel the same way The Dude does about the fuckin’ Eagles, man.
At one point in my life I had 31 Hendrix LPs; The 5 or so released during his life, plus a lot of albums of various tracks that were being milked for $$ in the years after he was murdered. A lot of these odd tracks were hands-down great. After the news came out about his death, I heard that his family was getting the rights to his music, at that was really great news. I love to see a wrong turned right.
Later, I don't remember when it was exactly, maybe 2012-2013-ish, I was using UA-cam pretty regularly (I'm the notorious L.A.TE-adopter), and I noticed Hendrix stuff was kinda hard to find. Only odd live versions, etc., which often don't do the studio stuff justice. I made a comment that they needed to put good versions on these songs on UA-cam, because who is ever going to discover and appreciate Hendrix without that?
A quick check just now (03-2022), the Jimi Hendrix channel has 926k subscribers. Better, actually, than I would have expected, but too weak for the best rock guitarist ever. I don't know how many Hendrix tracks sell on whatever outlet, and I don't really want to find out, because it's probably very depressing.
I wonder, if everyone sent Don Henley a penny, would he have enough pinching-pennies to lighten-up on this blocking mess? Yes, he can do what he wants with his property, but he kinda looks and sounds ridiculous in that video he made.
Also when you said youtube is the new university I wholeheartedly agree. I started playing drums again after 10 years and use UA-cam to learn different things. UA-cam drummers like Stephen Taylor and Rob Brown educate. They make great stuff and have been hit by the blocking bug

I love watching your lessons, it's like being back in university. The way you teach modes is phenomenal, and there are many music professors who would benefit from watching your tutorials.
Keep doing what you're doing, our industry NEEDS YOU! love your work.
Rick, I went to music school. Literally ALL of the music examples of every artist we studied, came from UA-cam. Period. We learned and performed a song every week. We watched a video with the studio version, then we watched a live performance. Both on UA-cam.
Thank you Rick for all your passion and musicality!! So sad these “blocker” artist don’t see the gift of keeping “their music alive!!!???”
My son knew "We Will Rock You" by Queen by age 4. It came on my radio and he familiar with it trying to sing along. It turned out it was from a UA-cam show he watched back then. He's 7 now. He's since become familiar with many classic rock and other genre's as well as a result. Beyond that, it's great for developing a child's ear and opening them up to different styles of music.
Bugs Bunny and other cartoons of that generation introduced me to classical music. A little ragtime from Tom and Jerry as well.
Pheno add in there Charlie Brown & the gang introducing classical piano and jazz - we kids of the sixties really did have it good
I even bought CDs because Rick talked about songs on these albums. Kansas, Boston, Pearl Jam. It works, Rick. It works pretty good 😊 They should beg you to use their music. 🥁🎸🎷
i hear what you're saying. blocking is plain dumb
The only reason I know anything else from Boston other than More Than A Feeling is because of Rick.
Thank goodness your _Angie_ clip (treatment) is still out there. I just heard it for the first time. Delivering newspapers before dawn I'd hear _Angie_ playing on a clunky transistor radio, it was great, great, _great._ When I finally heard it on real hi-fi a few decades later what got me was how raucous it is. On top of its being sublime, they were having a really good time.
I’m the guy that told Andy Partridge about your channel and recommended that he get in touch with you. Andy realized the value in being in a What Makes This Song Great video.
The story goes that Keith met Mick when he saw Mick waiting for a bus with an armful of blues records. Same artists Keith was interested in. Imagine if Mick had said “sorry but I can’t let you hear them, mate.”
Rick, I found your channel because I was looking up videos about Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell, so I would definitely say that you're probably bringing a lot of people to artists they might not have listened to before.

How can Queen be a blocker?People are reacting to their songs all over youtube. Every the twins did one
Do you really think he sits there and blocks it himself? How fucking stupid are you?
@@noname-ng6sj Do you really think that I think that? Hmm, how simple must it be to think you are surrounded by idiots. No, of course I do not think that. And he is not even the complete band. In a nutshell, UA-cam blocks free marketing of older songs.
Buckminster Fuller said: “You never change things by fighting against the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.”
Awesome and inspiring quote, @Euthymia! Thank you.
I have that quote on a post-it which has been on my desk for years now.
@@s1d299 ....wow Buckminister Fuller on a Post It note?....sort of like John Lennon's "imagine " as elevator muzak....all the Whole Earth Catalog Hippies are flipping in their graves
Bucky deserves his own YT channel.. I think part of the quagmire of copyright we're seeing is the last grasping straws of legal rights exercised because they can be. In court, I think a fair use argument would win, but as private space, Alphabet/YT is free to set whatever rules it likes, and if that means immediately taking down even a cover of a song, it tells me that YT does not want to be seen as a 'streaming service' unless one is subscribing to a streaming service. The diff? Owing copyright holders royalty payments for the non-subscription stream. This is about a few greedy and uncaring copyright holders and YT playing CYA.
You can only make a new model that makes the old one obsolete if you're able to get your foot in the door so people will notice your new model. I have tons of ideas for movies. I'm not a screenwriter I'm not a script writer but I can come up with an idea that can be turned into a script or screenplay but getting my foot in the door is the hardest part. People that have gotten rich off the old model don't want the new model to rear its ugly head because they'll be out of a job.
I guess the same way Bohemian Rhapsody hit the charts again when Wayne's World came out.
Didn't Queen get back on the charts from their biopic?
@@My_Naginta yup, hit top 40 again. It's also in the top 50 most played songs all time on spotify with well over a billion plays now.
Bohemian Rhapsody is such a big song now. I was a freshman in college when Wayne's World came out and up until that time Bohemian Rhapsody was just sort of a novelty song. I always thought it was a fun, but quirky song. But that Wayne's World segment (movie) and the video (MTV) took that song to a whole another level. It was the combination of the song and the video that really made it what it is today.
....They got paid for that tho.
@@My_Naginta Yes, which they got paid for.
I just turned 57. I think it is fantastic that so many Millennials love classic rock 'n roll. They know what is good and the vocals don't rely on Auto Tune.
GOOD music is meant to be passed ONWARD for future generations to learn from and should NEVER be blocked. Music is a GIFT that's meant to be shared.
As a musician who got into the entertainment industry in the 1970's and stuck around until the late 2000's, it just makes no sense to me how the industry is being handled lately. We thought there was a lot of greed back THEN. These days, it's worse! Blocking what, essentially, is FREE ADVERTISING is just plain stupid, in my opinion.
Nobody minded getting their songs played on the radio.
I think this might all be residual from the Napster days. At that time, it was a legit concern when thousands were sharing music files P2P and therefore not buying the music. Most of these blockers are old enough to have been big at that time either with original music or big greatest hits collections. It wouldn't surprise me if they are viewing youtube in much the same way. Napster really didn't help them sell albums but they might misguided into not seeing the excellent opportunity the have for free advertising with youtube.
@@sheilaswegler4859 Heck, we LOVED THAT back then! The Tom Hanks movie: 'That Thing You Do' where the drummer first hears his band's song on the radio and freaks out - that's 100% what we all did!!
@@kennethmcpherson6682 Yeah, I can understand that if that's the case. It just doesn't make any sense to me, though. Remember back when we had Cassettes? We could record stuff - and often did - from the radio. We could COPY those tapes for our friends, etc. We could also record our vinyl or CD's to tape (before CD Recorders showed up). No one batted an eyelash about it. But, these days, if you dare put up a video using something by certain blockers, they freak out. I had a video get blocked by 'A Flock of Seagulls' TWICE! It was their famous song 'I Ran'. First, I used their recording. So, I re-upped it using a backing track made from scratch - blocked again. It made ZERO sense! I don't even monetize my channel! Bob Seger did the same thing.
@@Axess-sv8nq So true. I think the cassette "mix tapes" flew under their radar a bit. One of those "out of sight, out of mind" type things. I record myself working out, post it so my coach can see it and I get a copyright claim notice on almost every video just from the music I am playing in the background. Now, I have no intent at monetizing these videos (they wouldn't be viewed anyway lol) but I find it incredible how many songs ding a copyright. I feel really bad for artists like yourself. I have been learning to play the bass over the last year or so and I can truly appreciate the work goes into recording something.
If labels/artists were smart they'd be ASKING Rick to feature their work.
