Just wanted to add that with my 98 2022, i swapped out the yonex stock grip with a head hydrosorb (I got too small a grip size anyway) and it helped a bit with the hand pain issue. So if you could stand to go up a half size, a more cushioned grip is a decent fix. Otherwise, I'd say this is a fairly comfortable and elbow-friendly racquet.

I have tried or owned every version of the Ezone since the release of the AI. I think you are very accurate on your assessment. This is why I still use the ai 98 instead of switching. As far as the DR goes. I think you will be disappointed. It has the smallest sweet spot of all of them all. I would put it as my 2nd least favorite of them all.

I'd bet the 2018 comfort is due to frame stress over time. I picked up new rackets with the same stiffness rating as my old but couldn't believe the amount of wrist pain using the same string. Had to string it much lower and am waiting for the frame to "soften."

I only played with the 2020 version but i have to agree. I really loved the stick and it was a real love story for the first few weeks/months. But it turned out quickly that I had really strong forearm and shoulder pains after every single session (usually the next day). It felt like i had a big musle contraction in my forearm for like 4 to 5 days after each session! And with some harder balls (like the wilson roland garos), i even could feel the pain after hitting for 10mn) It was really unpleasantly surprising to me as I had been playing for more than 20 years at a really decent level (6 USTA) and I had never been sensitive to any racket so far no matter how heavy and firm it was. I'm training way way less since i turned 30 so i first told myself I was getting old and I tried to lower the tension and use softer polies but the pain kept coming. It was so painful that I couldn't play normaly two days in a row.
After reading i was not the only one I finaly decided to switch racket and everything has gone perfectly fine since then. Sad cause as I said i really loved that racket A LOT and how it played. I also played very well with it but for less than 1H and once a week lol. I was willing to try the new version but I'm not going to after what you said about it...
You do a very good job with the review btw. Keep going! Cheers.

I play the Ezone AI 98 (Osaka's racket), but have the original XI (Kyrgios), AI, and DR - all are all excellent. The XI has a slightly different shape and is a bit sharper/brassier with a fairly direct feel. This is probably my favorite overall when I'm at 100%, but I've had wrist issues and I feel it just a tad when playing days on end. These are also hard to come by anymore and are pretty expensive on the secondary market. The DR is a bit plusher and is certainly worthy of its great reputation. It too can be expensive, but are a bit easier to find. However, the hidden gem really is the AI, as it is a great mix of the XI and DR; no discomfort, great feel, and not overly plush. A few years ago I picked up several at well under $100 per stick, and still seem them under $100 from time to time. All great options when you can find them. As for stringing, these rackets all respond nicely to a range of strings. I used to play Kirschbaum Proline II rough, Wilson Revolve Twist, or Confidential at 54, but have recently been playing a lot with Hyper G at 46. I've been surprised how well the rackets respond with both setups. The AI with Hyper G at 46lbs can be seen at the 11:00min mark at ua-cam.com/video/A0EENjt9OGQ/v-deo.html (hitting with Winston), and the rest of the vid is Revolve at 54.

Enjoy the unbiased reviews. I'm looking at moving to the ezone 2022 from a heavily customized 2006 Pure Drive Cortex (not going to bother trying to find these anymore).
I would be curious if stringing at a lower tension would improve comfort. I hope so. My PD is weighted up to about 345g swing weight but I still don't have any pain. Problem is that while it was once a stiff frame, who knows where it is now 🤷
I think the thicker beam width on the ezone 22 may account for both it's increased stability and it's worse maneuverability. Sucks. But most of the time I find stability and and maneuverability inversely correlated. 😵‍💫

I felt that 2022 was softer, less power and more control and easier to swing from the baseline. The only aspect that I didn't like for the 2022 was the volley. Not stable enough

I agree about the discomfort. I have the 2020 with head lynx tour 16 at 55. Yes it’s a stiff setup but Iv used this string and tension on several other racquets before and after, and the ezone 2020 was the only racquet that gave me pain in the wrist upon impact. I think this happens when swinging big and driving a flat ball. Players who don’t drive the balls as much don’t feel the discomfort with this racquet I suspect.

I actually strongly disagree with the maneuverability department. I switched to the Ezone 98 2022 put 9g of lead onto it and the maneuverability is awesome. Especially during the winter months we play on extremely fast carpets here in Germany. This racket helped me a lot.

My 2018 had higher swingweight than my 2020 and was also, at the same time, quicker through the air. Agree on the torsional stability tho.
I also hit a way meaner ball with the 2018, both flat and spinny worked better. 2020 felt more forgiving but lacked the reactiveness and spin of the 2018. (Same string, same tension).
    For my game obviously.

Hello Mark! Thanks for the vid. I have a Ezone 100 DR 285, that I might send to you. :-) As for the later Ezones, I played with the 2018 version (100 sqin 300 g), and now I am playing with the 2020 version. The 2022 version I am not really planning to try. I know that you have been testing the 98 version, but I do not have insight on those. As for the 100 version I like the 2020 more, it feels more powerful, and more stable. I really do not have any arm issue with that racquet. To be exact, I tried with a leather base grip, with a Super Grap overip first, but I did not like the sound, plus I had slight discomfort in my arm, especially on off center shots. The leather grip also started to give blisters even through the overgrip. After that I put a Head Hydrosorb Pro base grip, with a Babolat VS overgrip, and now it really plays and sounds nicely. I am using the racquet with Poly Tour Fire 1.20 mm string at 49 pounds. I really enjoy this config. Apart from the Head Hydrosorb, the racquet is stock, no weight added.

  • @dhat1607
    @dhat1607 2 роки тому +3

The characteristics of these racquets are determined by a few things, such as swingweight, balance point, total weight, twist weight (inertia around its axis). Manufacturers play around with these year on year to achieve different goals and the marketing kicks into overdrive. If you go into these specs a bit more Even only for yourself you would find common themes and it would make it easier to problem solve and choose future racquets.

    • @a2casius

Totally agree, except you missed out the layup changes. Crucially, there were significant layup changes (stiffer) from Ai to DR and even more changes from DR to 2018. That's where the injuries started to happen. The Ezone line went from being a highly recommended racquet for TE sufferers to one which started to actually cause TE. And that's when I decided to bid farewell to Yonex.

I got an Ezone Tour 2022 for testing (bought it barely used, did not want a demo). I am actually used to heavy racquets, my Wilson Blade is beefed up to 350g strung.
But the Ezone Tour is already a monster when stock, it is head heavy AF. So I added a leather grip to counter the weight, works quite well now, but still quite a beast.
Manoeverability is still bad though, touch is even worse, even without a dampener.
But power, spin and control are very well balanced and at high level each.
Top frame if you know what you are doing. Without "Tour" still an extremely well rounded allround racquet.

The only thing I'd doisagree on is the comfort & some of the spin on the 2020, obviously comfort is subjective, we're all built different and all have different bodies & pains, thankfully I never had any discomfort from the 2020 and after some thought (And rumours of the 2024 being a repainted 2022) I'm going to head back to some 2020s and go from there, as for spin, the slice on 2020 was great for me, topspin, not so much, but I'm a flatty so it suited me well - and looks the best!

2018 loved it great spin and ground strokes but within 10 minutes hand and arm pain. 2020 no control hard to keep the ball in court the tour was better. 2022 I liked it a lot, I thought much better than DR 98 which lacked in the spin department. 2020 and 2022 and DR no hand or arm pain 😜

  • @tristanpearce78
    @tristanpearce78 2 роки тому

I used to use the DR98 loved it, but being silly and a tennis nerd I sold it to get another frame (which in end didn't suit).
Anyway since DR98 I tried the 2018 didn't mind it but felt needed weight and the 310g of DR was nice.
2020 I bought and just couldn't gel, felt like control or consistency of stringbed was bit erratic.
2022 I tried 98 and 100 and ended up with the 100 but added leather grip and 4g lead at 12pm....for me personally this is great feeling frame.
But on the 2022 98 I do think its first one since the DR that I could say I really liked and could gel with, more consistent stringbed to that of the 2020 and more stable than the 2018.
So for the Ezone 98s...I would rate them DR98 then 2022, then 2018, then 2020.
So now I use customised 2022 Ezone 100 for singles and doubles always fall back to my trusty Tenx Xcalibre 315g which I've used for few years now and is just so nice for net play (for me).

For me the Radical has great feel and much bigger sweetspot without sacrificing that much control. Still worth a try, I didnt sell my prostaff, probably going to keep it to play around, but its not my tournament racquet anymore, cheers!

btw, if you like wilson, I found the new blade98 v8 much better than the prostaff, its just easier to play good tennis with it :)

Did you try any of the extended ezones?
I wanna try an extended racquet so bad and the ezones have the best control out of the extended racquets on market.
