One thing I really do love about Joel is how down to 🌎 he is and how willing he is to share his secrets to cheap, epic videos. And I don’t even make videos lol
It kind of is a choice, he could draw another keyframe during those moments to lessen the bleeding and artificats if he wanted but he mentioned in another video that he likes embracing them because he likes the way they look. Embracing "mistakes" is still a creative choice in the end.
You have the patience of a saint to make all these animated videos. It’s sounds like such a laborious process. Now more people will be making animations like this. I love your outlook though! It’s very wonderful the way you share art.
while it looks hard (and it is a lot of work don't get me wrong) the fact is to do this all the traditional way would be like twice as much work. having the actors on screen to trace over is much easier than doing the whole character from scratch.
The more one learns the kind of work that goes into basically ANY media or entertainment, the more we can learn to appreciate it. Animating in general is an extremely monotonous and tedious task that gets taken for granted in the end product.
If people could up vote this to hopefully let Joel see this, I think it could be really helpful. It looks like you could really speed up your workflow by using a tool like ffmpeg. That can automatically create the png frames for you, and also auto convert the png frames back into the video frames.
well, i think he likes to use premiere pro for that part because it allows him to have the video edited before he begins the animation process. ffmpeg is awesome though!
Are you saying ffmpeg will let us skip the step of making a folder for each PNG? I haven't tried this yet, but I want to and that part sounds like a nightmare.
@Daniel Wong The AI takes reference frames and assumes continuous motion. This won't work, of course, anywhere that there's been a scene change, or a jump cut, or something similar. So you separate it into the individual continuous portions.
Youre so sweet Joel!!! Cant wait to see what ppl do with your techniques!! I love when ppl arent possessive about their crafts and see the value in sharing art ❤
Honest to god, you celebrating everyone's creativity and sharing knowledge on how to make art is inspiring. I don't think you know how great this video actually is for so many different reasons, while being informative AND hilarious. Absolutely killing it!
You are a comedic genius and a huge inspiration to me in so many ways. Thank you for sharing this knowledge! I can't wait to get started on a project of my own!!!
If AI-assisted rotoscoping is cheating, mocap is cheating. I love your work. The ad-lib dialogue and real motions are superb; it's like a digital stage performance.
Well some animators do argue that mocap is cheating, they say that while you can use motion as reference, it should start and end at reference and not motion tracing which is what mocap does. People are hardcore like that, they are the new breed who used to be criticized by the previous oldschool who considered animation to only be real if it was on paper.
Just by watching your videos, as someone who’s been doing graphics and editing for 20 years, I already understood most of the process without watching this video except for absynth.
I really don't like the UA-cam algorithm, it only recommended this channel to me once you got lots of subscribers. But I have been binge watching all of your old videos too and I love it. I wish the algorithm worked better and recommended things people like rather than just recommending people with lots of subscribers and likes. Another words I wish I was recommended this channel like 5 years ago.
Corbin Robinson UA-cam did tweak the algorithm a few years ago because the joke was if you allowed autoplay to run long enough every video would eventually just lead to Gangnam Style (i.e. more and more popular videos). Then they went the other way and started recommending people more and more niche stuff, and this is part of the reason why conspiracy videos like flat earth started getting so popular. People would watch one video that was vaguely conspiracy related and they would get recommended something even more fringe until they were way down the rabbit hole. Turns out designing algorithms is hard
@@ryanledoux366 the more and more I learn about algorithms, like your reply here- the more happy I am that I am far out of the norm. I like to describe it as "algorithms don't apply to me" which- obviously that can't be true, but core concept stands: I hate how they try to predict or present everything- I consume ALL KINDS o fuckin music and all KINDS of content, and when you talk about recommending more like material, - yeah, I just don't play those games, and I NOTICE them too. And also I agree with this guy- however I just had a recommendation from a 1.3k subscriber channel with a 2 hour old video and no comments, so, that does support what you said. 🤷♂️ I dunno, but Joel Haver is the BALLS.
The algorithm gets a lot of flack. But youtube is such an insanely massive website that its presence is the only thing that keeps this place remotely fresh feeling (if you cultivate it as such, watch nothing but 30 second twitch clips and ye shall receive just that). My sidebar right now, amidst the popular waste still contains a few videos with as little as 500 views. A site with no algorithm would never let that happen.
@@ryanledoux366 yea, That’s the other thing I noticed, A few years back I watched one of those stupid as steamed hams Simpson things just because I was curious, I hated it and stoped watching it, even gave it a thumbs down just in case if the algorithm recommends it to me. But after I had watched it I had millions of recommendations just like it, like “the bee movie but everyone time they...”steamed hams but every time they...”spongebob but every time they...” ect ect. I had no interest in these videos but that’s what was popular at the time and Cus I watched one of them, so it just kept recommending them to me and I dident watch them. It’s only recently about a month ago that I haven’t seen any video of the sort.
I still remember this is the video that got me to finally subscribe to you. Nothing more noble than teaching valuable info for free in the name of the arts as a whole.

P.S. I once spent like $250 for a box of Masters 25 and got 3 mythics total coming out to be about $12 in value. That felt good.

I love 40k, but I can't. So much money.
Fuck, don’t remind me.
One thing I really do love about Joel is how down to 🌎 he is and how willing he is to share his secrets to cheap, epic videos. And I don’t even make videos lol
"Who's to say?"
Tony Lazuta, that's who! He runs the whole operation.
Wait- what was that?! Must've been my imagination
Tony Lazuto?!
Your wholesome as hell and I love your channel and style
3:40 I'm gonna be totally honest, I thought the weird color bleeding was a style choice. I liked it lmao
ME TOO KANSJSX I WOULDN'T MIND IT AT ALL BUT NOW IK BTS HE'S STRUGGLING
*Style symptom
I think he likes it too. Thats why he said some of it is ok but sometimes its too much and u gotta fix it
It kind of is a choice, he could draw another keyframe during those moments to lessen the bleeding and artificats if he wanted but he mentioned in another video that he likes embracing them because he likes the way they look.
I cant give this video enough Thumbs Up! Thank you so much for the lesson. Keep up the great work everyone!
*I've got no idea why I've never used this tool before! Thank you for the video, man!* ❤️🏆

Thank you for making this video, over the past 2 years I have seen others do the same exact style and it looks like they learned it from this video.
I was waiting for this. Thanks for all the work!
Dude, Amazing work, anesthetic and philosophy! Big fan
Yeah I've noticed more studios dipping their toes into that. Beats Korean sweatshops
You're an inspiration, dude.
Don't let anybody tell you otherwise 💖
Just by watching your videos, as someone who’s been doing graphics and editing for 20 years, I already understood most of the process without watching this video except for absynth.
"Any time technology makes art, easier to learn, more accessible, more efficient, we should applaud it."
Well said. Very well said.
I didn’t know how long it took animators to animate
I dunno, but Joel Haver is the BALLS.
@@ChapsShrugged ua-cam.com/video/Ej0Kijd4_4Q/v-deo.html That explains the bad UA-cam algorithm
This video gave me the painting the each cone in coniferous forest with eye-leash brush feeling.
“One of the last things I do is I add some effects… that kind of gives it a little life, a little zhoo-zhoo, a little bloo-bloo floo-floo…”
This is so time consuming. Props to Joel for actually having fun with this.
I still remember this is the video that got me to finally subscribe to you. Nothing more noble than teaching valuable info for free in the name of the arts as a whole.
Total MVP move to share creative methods like this. Props to Joel!
These sketches are so funny and a lot of that is all the animation and style, it really adds to it.
Man, I was literally wondering how these videos were made just before stumbling into this one. Thanks man, it's fascinating.
0:52 Calling it now, I think it's gonna be Rotoscoping.
That’s like motion capture, but with way lower budget and works way better
I mean there is blender
Congrats on 500k this is awesome and will play around with it with my 3D Printing footage
I love how this looks. It looks so interesting and fun. It’s unique and odd
You are an inspiration, my dude. Stay awesome
Absinth was a great tool for the artists back then too.
This guy alone probaly craeated a new era of actual animation.
I know I am two years late, but thank you for this video. I have been having a lot of fun playing around with this :)
"An animated just joel" such a fun line 🙆♂️
Not only does he have a good sense of humor and is a talented creator, but he's also a genuinely awesome dude. Thanks for the tutorial.
Fair play for putting your method out there. Lots of people wouldn't have.
It's a gamble. You either have your own style and make money from it. Or someone steals your aesthetics and makes something better than you.
Obviously, it's hard to make something better than this dude's trilogy. But I'm speaking general terms. Why secret cooking recipes exist.
In this case I feel like it's safe from being stolen willy nilly cause it takes so much time and effort.
Joel's goal is to encourage people to just create, and make stuff, so he's not worried about revealing "secrets"
True and it could just further boost him cuz he’s the OG and word will get around
That's why Joel is king. He's just too humble, lovable, and hilarious.
man thats a lot of work, well done sir!

He also does some fantastic croch work!
I thought the glitches were on purpose lol they really do add too it somehow. Kinda makes everything feel off and even more like an awkward fever dream.
They’re definitely kept on purpose! I always make sure to keep it just glitchy enough!
Same here, I really like it too because it just really fits with the old vhs type of animation style with weird glitches as the tape corrodes and ages.
@@Joel-Haver The glitches and the VHS feeling are some of the things that make your videos great, good job!
@@Joel-Haver Is it possible to use this on a live facecam given the right circumstances? I always wanted to try Vtubing but making the avatar look stupid and unrefined unlike the 3d anime models everyone uses. Love the vids btw.

Animators supporting animators. Awesome. :)
Glad to see you here! :)
Possibly beyond!
It's fantastic because he does the tutorial on the video he's discussing the tutorial in. Even in what should be simple information videos, Joel still blows us away!

This is some meta behind-the-scenes content
I like how he went the extra mile to keep his style of humor by including some more elaborate changes in his presentation.
