If you want that super smooth finish, a friend taught me a trick. Use the 1500, of course, with Mr. Leveling Thinner. Then, as a last pass, shoot a layer of MLT "neat". Just MLT, laying it on a teeny bit heavy. That will reactivate the very surface layer and allow it smooth out even more.
I'm a huge fan of Mr. Surfacer 1500 (black) for priming and I thin it about 2:1 thinner to paint. I would think you'd want to thin Mr. Surfacer 500 even more than that. Maybe 3:1 thinner to paint?
been using 1500 as a primer for a few years, still needs 50/50 thinning for an airbrush as it is very thick and gloopy! just out of interest are you based in the midlands as you have a bit of a midlands accent? like myself tbh!
Did you scribe the details on that model before using the primer? The panel lines really show deeply. Or is it just a really great model? The edges of some curved sections are really done well if you did scribe them. Thanks for the vid, been looking at a few now for a good idea of what to do (first time using an air brush and I have spent 10 hours doing the bodywork on a Lamborghini before primer)
I love Mr. Surfacer, but if I were to prime with it I would use 1500 and thin it down maybe 50% with the leveling thinner. The 500 is VERY thick, and I use that for gap filling.
Another great video thanks for sharing ive never used mr surfacer primer its either humbrol or 151 primer and it dont go on too bad and leaves a good surface
I use the 1500 in grey, black, or pink, depending on the effect I’m looking for. I also use the regular thinner, and add Retarder as needed, depending on temperature. I work in my garage, so temps can be all over the map.
The only primer i use is mr surfacer its great, i use vallejo, mission models paint, ak, alcad, tamiya, and never had a problem with any of the paints or mr surfacer.
Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 in black and grey are my go to primers. Best I have ever used and easy to get where I live in Canada. I use the 500 for filling small seam lines and imperfections as it is easily sanded. Unfortunately its lacquer and stinks. So may not be suitable for everyone.
I would not dream of trying to spray Mr Surfacer 500 - far too thk. I use either the grey 1200 or the newer 1500 colours that have FINER pigments - both are thinned with 60% levelling thinner - use light coats to build up coverage.
Well you know you can absolutely use lacquers and enamels without primers without any adhesion problems. However acrylics absolutely does need a primer base..............

Very helpful video. How long do you let the primer dry before putting your base coats on? I’m new to lacquer paint. Thanks!
I love all their surfacer products and they are always handy for filling and priming👌
It is available in spray cans in the 1500 version. I’ve seen grey, white and black as well for your priming use.
What psi range would you recommend for spraying it?
15 to 20 psi with a nice feathered spray pattern

Thanks for the info

How well does this take Vallejo Model Color?

60:40 Mr. Leveling Thinner vs. MS15K?
Where in the world does one find Mr.Surfacer 1500 in black ?1? Unavailable in every single webshop in Europe..
The Problem is with Mr. Surfacer it is hard to get here in Germany. The availability is bad. It is way easier to choose Vallejo Primer.
Vallejo would be my second choice mate

Why not use mr hobby rapid thinner
U can, and some do
