    The last part of episode 22 that King Canute try to stop the sea wave is based on a historic story "King Canute and the tide."

    People gotta realize the reason Canute said “No” to seeing Thorfinn initially is the same reason he eventually said “Yes” to his proposal. The last memory he had of him was an angry feral teen who was hellbent on revenge for most of his life and even managed to slash his face. He knows Thorfinn is a dangerous person and could just be waiting for his opportunity to strike at the him again. It makes sense to avoid him. At the same time, seeing how much Thorfinn had changed; quite literally to an unrecognizable point both physically and mentally, Canute couldn’t help but laugh hysterically and be in awe, and have faith in his newfound determination.

      While I dont disagree with you I believe that it's rather because Canute hates a part of himself and the actions he has to take as a king, so he is afraid to confront his past and the way he was back then. He was afraid of asking himself "is this really what I wanted?".
      Then after their talk canute was more of his former self, as thorfinn showed him how violence is not necessary or even bad for both of their goals - a land of peace for those who suffer.

      part of it as well was he had never been approached like this before
      so he has to be on guard especially with how Thorfin was, like he said people try to kill him, bribe him, trick him but never speak to him in an honest no strings attached way
      he just had delusions of his Dad telling him to kill him ..he's dangerous
      Thorfin just asked him to leave, no ok I'll go then

      How I saw it is, Canute hated the man he was become, so Thorfinn being the reminder of his past just stirred him up. It wasnt because Canute was afraid Thorfinn was gonna hurt him, he was afraid of Thorfinn seeing what he has become. Imo that was also a reason why he so quickly tried to explain his ideals to Thorfinn.

    Olmar's character development here is so important... especially when you remember back to episode 7 of this season, when Ketil got peer pressured into beating that kid who stole from him. that episode keeps coming up in so many important ways, but it's especially important here, because Olmar does what Ketil couldn't.
    Ketil didn't want to beat that kid. they told their story, and Ketil felt for them... he literally cried. but he had eyes on him. Ketil had his wife, Pater, Snake, Olmar, Thorgil, and Arnheid present, and of those people, not one of them really had the power to make Ketil use his authority any different. but Ketil knew what they expected of him. and he wasn't strong enough to subvert their expectations. not even for the sake of doing something that he wanted.
    but the fact that Olmar can make his own decision here, is proof that Ketil could've done that too, the whole time. you can tell Thorgil no. Olmar tells Thorgil no, and because everyone else is bound to listen to Olmar, Thorgil can't do anything unless he does it alone. this was always an option... you just have to have a backbone, and make a decision.
    and honestly, it's Ketil's fault that both of his sons ended up this way in the first place. if Ketil hadn't lied about being Iron Fist Ketil, then Thorgil wouldn't have considered that to be a legacy he has to live up to. Thorgil may have become violent somehow anyway, but it did not help that he believed his father was a war legend. and all his life, Olmar has been surrounded by the wealth and clout that his father built, and overshadowed by stories of Thorgil's conquests, and he thinks that Ketil made a name for himself in the same violent way. he doesn't know that there is another method for men to distinguish themselves, so he keeps trying to do something unpleasant, and that he's really bad at, and he keeps hitting the same wall.
    Thorgil finds violence easy, and Ketil has always known that he was lying to everyone, and they both just left Olmar to flounder around, not knowing what he was doing wrong. it's amazing that Olmar was able to come to this conclusion anyway, considering the guys who have been his examples.

      Agreed, but the beauty of Vinland saga s2 is you can't really blame all to anyone for what happened. Ketil had his fault for sure, but he is also driven by his past, how he must gave up his lover to another more powerful man because he was helpless and had no power to resist that man.
      That's why when he got the title by mistake, he cling on to it, it made people respect him and think twice to mess with his belongings. Of course not all went well.
      Ketil had his ups and downs and what he did something terrible to Arnheid, but despite that he was a good rich man by that world standard IMO...
      He is (in Einard eyes) the case in where all his good deeds were forgotten because he made one big mistakes...

    looking back at these episodes... I think one of my favorite lines from Thorfinn is when Wulf asks him why he never fought back, and he starts doing his speech. and one of the things he says is "we just met today" and elaborates about how they have no reason to feel animosity toward one another. as individuals, they don't even know each other. Ketil and Canute are the only two people who actually have a disagreement with each other. they could settle it with a children's game. and that, right there, is very Thors like.
    Thors didn't kill a single one of Askeladd's men. they just met that day. he doesn't have a grudge against any of them. the disagreement is between him, and Askeladd. they can settle this with a duel. or, under better circumstances, even just a conversation. and besides... of the men in Askeladd's crew, Thors can't tell if any of them might have an epiphany like he did someday. one of them might come to realize the flaw in violence someday... Thors doesn't know who that might be.
    when Einar was angry with the retainers after they destroyed his and Thorfinn's wheat, Thorfinn asks Einar if he plans to kill them. Thorfinn has done so much worse to so many more people... so he points out that if Einar wants to kill the retainers, he'd have to kill Thorfinn a hundred times over. Thorfinn was a monster, and then he improved. extending that chance to another person is something that you're bound to do, if you want to believe in your own ability to improve.
    this is a type of love that goes beyond the ability to personally know someone. you don't have to know them. the fact that you don't know them means that you can't tell what you're destroying, if that's what you decide to do. they just met that day... there's no way they could possibly hate each other so irreparably already.

  • @kamuyking551
    @kamuyking551 Рік тому +60

    also, in that last episode... when Thors gave his life, he also saved Ylva's future husband. in the third episode of the first season, when Ari asked Thors to tell him a story about his time in the Jomsviking, Thors told Ari about how, when Ylva was born, that's when he started to fear the battlefield. because he didn't want to invite violence upon his family, or leave them all alone if he didn't come back one day. he was already planning to send Ari back home to the village at that point, even if Ari didn't know it. that was the last thing Thors was able to do for his daughter.

    also, the part where Thorfinn says he's thankful to have ended up on the farm, and asks Einar if he'd be okay with not repaying that kindness... that part gets me every time, because Einar taught him how to say thank you. the first time Thorfinn said it was after that scene where Einar nearly chokes him. but instead of going through with it, he yells at Thorfinn, telling him that there is still something to live for. and that they're alive in the first place because someone kept them alive. and it almost sounds like Einar's talking to himself a bit there too. his mother and sister helped him live, for as much time as they had, and now he has to keep going, so as not to waste it. even now, Einar can keep being the person that Arnheid was thankful to have known. and that makes this the most compelling argument for why Thorfinn wants to give back. he met Einar on this farm. how could he not be thankful to have been here?

    I also really need to say... there's just so much going on in the talk with Canute, it's insane how everything in this season pays off in that one conversation. we've seen everything, from the way Thorfinn and Einar have suffered at the bottom of the hierarchy, vs. the way the retainers took out their frustrations at being stuck as lower class, vs. the way the guests are kept by Ketil because he's the only one that will pay people with pasts like theirs, vs. the way Ketil has hoarded resources and become anxious over whoever might covet them, vs. the way Canute has had to do things he never wanted or intended to do, in order to maintain his power. it all links up.
    like... Canute's original goal was to create a Utopia, yeah? but I love Einar in this conversation, because he's basically here to ask, "Utopia for who?" Einar comes at this from the perspective of a normal citizen... the exact kind of person who gets trampled underfoot every time a king starts a war. Ethelred ruled when Einar's father died in battle, and Harald ruled when his mother and sister died in the raid on their village... the ideology of the king didn't matter to them. even now, Canute sides with the vikings, trying to reform them, because it's convenient to him. their lives matter to him, because he needs their strength to protect himself and his interests.
    but it's the same problem that Ketil had with his farm all over again, isn't it? the man at the top accumulates wealth and power, the people below him have reason to covet his wealth and resent his power over them, and the insecurity of the man at the top causes him to seek protections. yet these protectors and enforcers cost money... the expansion of the ruler's wealth and power feels necessary in order to pay them, but that also gives the guy at the top more to maintain. and there's this cycle of conquest and resentment that brews beneath the surface... the men on Ketil's farm all saw him as the guy at the top, and Canute has been accumulating more sins than he's been accomplishing goals.
    power requires maintenance, and the chores are often unpleasant. requisitioning a farm isn't a very Utopian thing to do, but you have to pay the army that enforces your authority... right? you can tell yourself that you know better... that you know best. power in your hands will be spent well, you think. a good man would be able to do good things with power, wouldn't he? but people don't just give up control. if you want to control a population, you have to wrench it away from each of the individuals who live beneath you. that's what authority really is. and that's why Sweyn constantly emphasizes that the crown has a mind of it's own. Canute is so caught up in maintaining his position above all others, and walling himself off from all the normal people that have been hurt because of him, that he's failing to create the Utopia he wanted. Utopia for who?
    and not only that, but in the first season, Canute draws a pretty distinct comparison between God in heaven, and his father in Gainsborough. a distant powerful figure, who is unconcerned for the condition of his creation. Canute now sits where his father once did, distant, and unconcerned for the fate of all the smaller lives that will line the path to paradise. when Canute tries to stop the waves, they crash down anyway. there are some things he simply can't control, and it is frustrating to him. but things are turning out this way, because he's only doing what every other king has done before. grabbing power via violence, treating citizens like pawns, sowing the resentment that he'll need an army to keep at bay, and convincing himself that someone at the top of society could never be understood by someone at the bottom.
    but at the bottom of society is where change begins. Thorfinn is talking about changing the culture of the people. all this time, Canute has been trying to order vikings not to pillage, while using them as a tool for conquest. it's hypocritical... they have no reason to listen to him. Thorfinn has been changing people's minds by speaking to them about his ideas. and he got these ideas from others who came before him. Thors. Leif. Einar's mother. that generation passed something on to Einar, and Thorfinn... something Arnheid was thankful for. with enough effort, they can carry that into the future. it will be as hard as it sounds, but this is a goal that is really worth the effort. for everything Canute has done, what does he have to show for it? is he any closer to Utopia? the results of Thorfinn's efforts are standing here. this is how he's won.

    Canute’s speech abt controlling the waves may have seemed bizarre here, but there is actually a fable about King Canute where he tried to control the tide to not touch his feet, but failed to do so. There’s not much about it from me looking through the internet but there are some records.

    I am a bit late, but have you guys noticed how Thorfinn and Eren went complete opposite routes, I had the fortune of watching both series for the first time in a relative close timespace of each other and noticed their complete opposite philosophy. Attack on Titan shows the real worlds opinion on violence, Vinland saga tries to show how it should be.

      Attack on Titan is a shounen series while Vinland Saga is a seinen series. Does this imply that AoT's philosophy is for immature kids while Vinland's philosophy is for true adults?
      Don't get me wrong. They are both deep and nuanced, but it takes a lot of strength and will to adapt the "I have no enemies" philosophy. Eren's conclusion to kill his enemies is valid, but that thinking is immature and dangerous.

    • @frogloop6969
      @frogloop6969 11 місяців тому +3

      @@jankyyard5610AOT is not really shounen, AOT and vinland have two completely different stories and the meanings are not the same. The fact that you compare Eren's actions by placing him in the context of Vinland Saga is a mistake.

    • @LittleCrazyGamer
      @LittleCrazyGamer 5 місяців тому

      @@jankyyard5610 while I do agree that Vinland Saga's story is more applicable for your real life while Attack on Titan's feels like "just a cool story", I have to comment that Eren's deranged ideology doesn't have anything to do with it being "immature". To witness all of history at once, all the war and pain, it'll fuck anyone up.
      Vinland Saga is my favorite series because it truly pushed me to use the power of talking, and I've managed to confront people with more power than me and help others because of it. But I find it unnecessary to push down Attack on Titan just because of that.

    For the historical background on this one: King Cnut (Canute in the anime) is regarded as one of the greatest kings of his era due to his method of ruling. What these episodes kinda portray is how Cnut came to be regarded as such a great leader. His poisoning of his family is still written in history, and his conniving tactics are also part of that legacy, but his statues and legacy still inspire people today due to the way he managed his subjects. Interesting story to look into.

    16:05 in the manga Einar says, "I bet you've never held a hoe in your life" which out of context is hilarious. Einar's role in the conversation is to point out Canute's bold faced lies. Hes basically calling him no better than a thief, and that Olmar's transgressions are just pretext to the end goal of seizing the farm.
    I think the anime did an amazing job of adapting the manga. I do prefer the manga for pacing and storytelling reasons, but MAPPA/WIT knocked it out of the park for the most part.
    My favorite episodes are: 15, 6, maybe 8(I really like the small additions to 24 though)
    My favorite characters: Arnheid, Snake, Canute (every character in this arc is phenomenal, even side characters like Fox)
    Something I didn't notice until the anime was the Ari (Ylva's husbands) teeth are missing because he got punched by Askellad way back in season 1. I thought he had missing teeth because of vikings having bad dental cleaning etc.
    Thorfinn's new cut is my favorite, some really good art in the manga when he has that hair style.
