I quit social media for 6 months: how my life changed

- Hi, I'm Amanda, and I spent 13 hours a day on my phone.
I've been off social media for 8 months now (by the time this video goes up, it's more like 10) and I wanted to talk to y'all about how my life has changed. It's been pretty much all positive, but I wanted to share some of drawbacks as well. When I first deleted social media I was terrified, so hopefully by sharing my experience some of you guys will try it out as well!
all my love,
Amanda
Deleting social media completely actually helped me to live my life like a human being. It was all BRAINROT, after all.
You're so right. I lost so much time scrolling through all the toxic apps and now I read a lot of books go outside and don't compare myself to others anymore. I was extremely addicted and always so depressed. It's a few weeks ago I deleted everything but I already feel like a new person, I feel so good and free... 🥺🖤
@@avyia I'm glad that you quit social media too! 💗 I hope that more people quit wasting their precious time and go out there and find real inspiration 🎀
we were given a drug called short form content and now everyone is addicted, though no one will admit they are
I deleted social media because im constantly comparing myself to others for every little thing! Im proud of myself and I plan on deleting UA-cam and Pinterest!
I rejoined instagram a year ago to be part of the bookstagram community because I am such a bookworm and love being able to talk about books. But…. I’m too sensitive for social media. It bothers me how comfortable people are being so disrespectful online. I take it personal even when it’s not directed at me lol I stay with UA-cam because I like videos, but I don’t miss instagram or any of those other social media platforms.
omg same!! I accidentely reactivated Insta again, and it drained me so much harder than before. It seemed so ridiculous, toxic and fake. Very bad energy. I am too sensitive for that too. I would never talk like that to people in real life. But people on social media loose the sense of reality, how we as humans act in real life. It scares me tbh. :(
exactly I hate Instagram so much I deleted it for 2 weeks and it has been the best decision I made in my life. UA-cam is better than Instagram. I would honestly delete Instagram forever but, I have online friends and it is hard to leave them. Anyways I am so proud of you :)
UA-cam is toxic too.
@@alenaadamkova5322def not as much as insta
this video is so nice I'm surprised it doesn't have more views... I love the perspective from someone who actually has a very high screen time compared to similar videos where people have like 2-3 hours. I think this is much more relatable so I hope it reaches more people!!
Aw thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I was shook when I saw how bad my screen time was. None of my friends had a screen time even CLOSE to mine
Its me a 24 years old spending 13-15 hours online
And im starting to get over it
But the point is now im 24 years old spending 13 hours watching videos about life without social media 🙂
LOL same here.
Space in my mind to actually think! This! So much this! I had a day in November 2022 where I hit 17 hours. Then over the next 9 months I took 3 months off. But then last august I said it was time to log off forever, and now I'm at 6 months since then. Don't miss it. Have built intentional communication with friends. I'm sure some people can use it healthily but I think that's actually a super small group. My brain had been trained to use online to overshare in hopes of attention and never validate myself. I'm so happy on this side of the addiction. Just recently got a "dumb phone" for non work hours too, makes for additional intentional communication
I really relate to that feeling of not being able to use social media in a healthy way, my screen time was absurdly high when I was using it as well which was destroying my ability to be present and productive.
Massive congrats for getting off it! I am currently a couple of weeks off it and already feeling calmer, more present and less stimulated.
I know it'll be hard when I travel as the urge to brag/seek validation is so real! Thanks for sharing :)
The calmness is so huge. Congrats on your journey!!
I need help! I’m addicted to UA-cam, can you make a video on hobbies you developed after quitting social media? Thank you!😢
Oh that's a cool idea, I'll make one!!
Content casino is a great name for it
I've been off 4 months. Hoping to reach the 8th month mark!!!
best of luck!!
I just cannot wait to meet a girl who does NOT live on social media. I will marry her right away 😂
Facts lol
Even better a girl who genuinely doesn’t care about it, not one that deletes it because it becomes a trend lol
i’ve been thinking about quitting socials recently too. used to be on everything and now i only use tiktok and insta. i never max out 3 hours of screen time a day on either, but ive always preferred to communicate through text. sooooo they’re kinda pointless. tiktok would be the first to go bc i kill brain cells by doom scrolling.
thanks for sharing! and nice video!
hahaha the doom scrolling, I was the queen of it. Thank you for watching!
I've deleted all my instagram accounts today. Hoping to never get back to that crappy feeling. Wish me Luck!
Good luck!!!
@@AmandasLifeNotes thankyou!
Same. We can do this 🙌🏽
Tbh nobody can use social media appropriately.
I was definitely addicted to Facebook for a while. I've been off that for about a year now, but my new addiction is definitely youtube. I'm gonna have to work on that.
I feel, youtube can be tough.
This is such a nice video! Also, don’t feel alone in not being able to use social media in a healthy way. I’d say you’re one of the few who are being self-aware and honest with themselves!
thank you for this video ... as a person with 11+ hours of social media usage I felt represented with this video and I got hope that I can change my situation too .. this video was also so relaxing ... keep posting
Thank you, that's really sweet. Thank you for watching!
These are best realizations after experiencing life without social media❤
The embarassment when you realize it's such an awful feeling. Years of wasted time in return of nothing but mental fatigue.
Yet recognising the addiction gives this superpower that the average of people don't have.
Thanks for this video, it gives me strenght to stick with my decision, even as a millenial it's not easy. :)
“Content casinos” spot on! Great video!
Hey, if you are based in UK, do you fancy going for a walk like "date-walk". I'd be happy to drive to your city.
I deactivated my fb and insta May 3 this year. Two months in. I’m going for 6 and maybe more.
I want to be connected,to talk with these type of people, where can I ?
I feel so seen, thank you ❤
Just started yesterday wish me luck
good luck!!
So excited because I'm one month in after deactivating my accounts and plan on not using it rest of the summer and then after 7 months is up I'm going go back and delete them.😊
I hope my question is not stupid , but what about UA-cam addiction ? Can that also be considered in the same way as being addicted to social media ?
That's not a stupid question! I think it depends. Personally, I didn't have the same problem with UA-cam. Long-form content just didn't feel as bad for my brain:) But, if you are noticing addictive tendencies with it (unable to put it down, abandoning your other hobbies just for youtube, prefering UA-cam to social interaction, etc.) then yes it can certainly be addictive!
I am trying to do this as well, first week. Really helpful to get your prospective 🤗
Great video Amanda! Good lesson and good for you for being brave and disconnecting! I try wellness experiments on my channel, perhaps we could do one remote together for a video in the future! Anyway, have a gooooood day and I've subbed! 🙌🏽
I really want to quit social media so bad, I have an addiction with TikTok but not sure where to even start. What do you do when you’re bored??
I read, exercise, watch videos, talk to friends, window shop, cook, clean, play with my cats, deep dive into different topics just to learn because it’s fun! I started taking classes at the community college for fun and to get into a new career because I realized just how boring my current one is. The world is huge and there’s so much to fill your time with! 😊
Hey! It's a rough transition, honestly. I think I'll make a video about some hobbies I've picked up since getting off the socials. Mostly, I read, or I play video games! Which may sound like a time waster too, but at least with video games I'm thinking instead of mindlessly scrolling. Thanks for watching!
Is not going to be easy, but you should find a strong reason for quitting, so that when you let go, you hold on your reason ND that will keep you going, you need something that will keep you going, what makes you happy, order than that TikTok.
girl you look exactly like book annabeth from percy jackson
omg best comment yet❤
Only 722 followers?????? Girl you gotta be kidding me
You have a nice house
Immediately loved ur vibe happy to be subscriber number 600 🎉❤
woohoo!! thank youuuu
I quit social media in Jan 2024, one day short of my birthday. It's probably the best birthday present I have given myself!
Deleted TikTok yesterday(I’m not much a insta person so I never use it anyway)wish me luck
Best wishes dear, on your journey of new you.❤
Thanks for your video❤️✨🥰 Godbless youuuuu and keep safe...
A lot of videos why you should quit social media and totally agree. Especially the narcissistic and toxic Facebook. UA-cam it’s also social media but in a decent different way and more informative
Social media is not entirely everyone once distraction, what ever is your distraction quit now, nd think more practical about your life, when you think there is time, then am telling you there is no time. Use your time wisely. So you don't regret tomorrow.
Assistive acces is also rly great. It allows you to only use the functions you choose and are aligned with your values. For example whatsapp, gmail, but not internet and social media
I equally needed a distraction from social media, that why i started my UA-cam channel, at least, the time i spend on socials, i use it to source for topics to discuss about on my channel, and make research on how to go about my presentation, then my editing at least on the long run, it will start fetching me money. In life everyone needed a distraction that will distract you from your distraction, nd i guess mine is my channel. Find yours and find happiness just like Amanda.❤
Love the idea, not a fan of giving bf the reigns over your phone setting tho..
Partners aren’t always forever:/
Thanks so much a question what is the ap your boyfriend use it for you
Very interesting video, i love it, thank you so much
❤❤❤❤
Hey Amanda, really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with Best Quality Editing in your videos better than your Editor with good pricing and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail which will help your videos to reach to a wider audience ? Pls let me know what do you think ?
I love itt
we need to address the fact that even if, we delete social media, we are rejected or seen as "different" over something that is slowly killing us as humans. our authenticity has now changed into doing and being like everyone else. we have forgotten what It means to be unique.
Fantastic video. I've been out of the media for 1 year and 6 months. It's really liberating
The world is crazy you choose your own peace and nobody else is going to do that for you
True talk 👍
Thank you for your inspirational and very helpful video! I deleted my socal media accounts today as well and can’t wait to see how much my mental health improves
Congrats ! I deleted my instagram 2 months ago. Am strongly considering doing the same w Facebook now. Thankfully, I never joined tik tok. I’d rather hear about my friends’ lives directly from them , instead of via a post. Joined FB in …. 2007 ! WHAT ? 17 yrs of my life on FB ? Several hours a day ? The books I could have read ! The time I could have spent w people… The work outs I could have done. The music I could have played & listened to. The volunteer eirk I could have done. The meals I couid have made. On & on !! I don’t watch or read mainstream news, & news is important to me & I get it from groups on FB. But itz also overstimulating. I used to be more creative. Thank you for this. Liz
The social media is not for me .✌🏻
I love this video ! I realized from "digital detox" that I have done recently that what you consume is really the "reality" that you live in !and it is toxic to live life that you have seen on social media if that is not making you feel present. I mean I am talking to myself really on this haha, but I think this is like an ongoing battle that you could have with yourself. Thank you so much for such a beautiful reminder to live your healthy life xx
Thanks Amanda! You know I have not been using Instagram for 2y. Because of time wasting. Now could better focus on my goals and hobbies. :)
Great move 👍
Hai, how are you
That sounds like me 😮
wow
That’s very powerful! Congrats
Thank you!!
13 hours a day, when u sleep Amanda? I feel like if I am 10 minutes with my phone my hand hurt, and I leave the phone right away.
Check your actual phone usage throughout the day. Everybody feels like they are just using it couple of hours at best.
@@Tate525 I quit social media, so that's why I have less time spend on the phone.
Boiling frog effect.
You're doing great! Keep going 💪
Thank you!!
I quit social media to post video on social media about quitting social media.
Yep😊
Ha, yeah, I can see how it's contradictory. But really, my problem was TikTok and Instagram! For some reason youtube and longer form content has always been much easier for me to moderate my usage of
Personally I can’t see myself quitting because I just can’t. I can’t cope with the boredom and I have no idea what I can be doing for 8-16 hours a day. And how do I even make friends if I can’t follow them on insta?
pick up new hobbies and improve skills you already have- read, write, paint, draw, exercise, work on yourself, journal, hike, spend time improving relationships with family and friends, etc. there’s so much you can do !! to overcome the boredom you have to first allow yourself to become bored and eventually you will develop ways of getting over it. as for the making friends, true friends will prioritise your relationship together regardless the means of communication. you’ll lose some friends quitting social media but it means you’ll find out who actually wants the connection and relationship you have. also, you don’t have to completely quit ! start by just reducing your time and set limits on apps. you got this !!
