    1:06-1:20 is where her amazing acting comes into play. Almost any actor can deliver a convincing enough rant. But the regret, hurt and that feeling of "fuck, I just went too far." she shows in her face in those 14 seconds looks 100% authentic and is something very few actors can pull off without dialogue.

    • @oscarxp25

      I agree 100%..Keaton also communicates so much though his face as she walks out of the room. Every father, even absentee ones like him in the movie, always lean on the fact they are their daughter's hero. Not only does she mock what he is trying to do, but mocks him all in one shot. I felt his pain even before the camera swung around to show his reaction and he captured it perfectly.

    • @xyPERSON
      @xyPERSON 9 років тому +45

      Heck... I nearly cried. This scene conveys so much pain and heartache from both actors and reflects the ugly reality of the world we live in. I felt sorry for Keaton's character because he was so desperate to recapture his past glory and prove that he still had a place in the world. I felt sorry for Stone's character because she was so screwed up psychologically and emotionally that it rendered her incapable of feeling any sympathy or empathy for her father.

  • @filmguy619

    One of my favorite scenes in the film. I love how Emma Stone just "spews out fire" yet afterwards, she conveys that "Oh, crap" look, thinking "shouldn't have said that". Stone's performance is a perfect and potent blend of both comedy and pathos and I cross my fingers her name is announced on Oscar Nomination Day.

    • @rush92287
      @rush92287 9 років тому +18

      To any people actually taking this question seriously: just because you're not socially 'important' doesn't mean you don't matter. After all, what is 'society' but a bunch of flawed individuals just like yourself? We don't like to think of it that way, because then we'd have to take real ownership of ourselves. We think of 'society' as the faceless living entity that determines the standards in our lives, but it's just an illusion really; it's there because people buy into it, as a necessity for living in the world. But when you think about it, social standards are pretty whimsical, and reflective of the current 'mood' of the masses, which is automatically a 'lowest common denominator" and path of least resistance. If you want real relevance in your own life, you have to discover it yourself. Value yourself and your happiness, live as you enjoy, and forget what others think about you.

    Seeing this in an advanced screening, packed theater, (and many times after), I had always liked Emma Stone, but this monologue changed how I saw her as an actor. I remember just being stunned, couldn't blink, and when it was over, everyone was whispering "she should get an Oscar for this" and variations of that. Of course she didn't, but now she's a two time Best Actress winner. Not surprised at all. So glad this won best picture as well. Such an exhilarating cinematic experience. P.S. Keaton should have won over Redmayne, but at least we swept up awards for Dopesick-- a career best performance.

    Such a great moment - really sums up what this generation is coming to. Twitter has really become one of the biggest abominations we have created, making the need for "popularity" something you can no longer leave behind in High School.

      I'm not sure that's the point of the scene really. I mean, yeah, there might be some light, implied criticism of social media, but she's criticizing her father for NOT taking part in those things, accusing him of obliviousness. She's suggesting were he actually interested in those things, his quest to regain relevancy might be a little more credible.

    I really like the way this is filmed (at least this shot) because it quite a long shot with handheld camera which gives it a realistic feel. I had an idea like this that I'm probably going to use in my upcoming movie!

    • @To00ni
      @To00ni 9 років тому +2

      the whole film is one shot

    • @todaywiththeCJB
      @todaywiththeCJB 9 років тому +2

      Tooni Yeah, I kinda found that out from watching some other clips. But I also figured that it's not one shot!
      I could see some visual trickery in another scene making it look like all one shot but actually it was more shots stitched together.
      But I've got to say, it works!

    Her acting in this scene is just 👌🏻👌🏻. Her monologue delivery is pitch-perfect. A well-deserved Oscar nomination/what should have been a win.

    So powerful. It is amazing how all she said is so true. It is impossible that now it’s not enough to exist in the real world, but I have to exist in the media world to really really exist.

    She reminds me so much of my sister for three reasons; 1) she looks almost exactly like Sam, with the exception of the big eyes, 2) she has the exact same attitude , and 3) she's currently in rehab on the count of drug addiction, but she'll be out in a couple days.
