But on the theatre stage, you can see the talent of an actor/actress without having to resort to good looks. You can be the ugliest person and still be a great actor/actress. Even out of the nominees we had If Beale Street Could Talk, Roma, The Favourite, and Spiderverse (even though it only got best animated film). The problem is that the Academy paid more attention to Oscar bait like Green Book, simple superhero movies like Black Panther, and pieces of shit like Bohemian Rhapsody. 2019 was a better year, but 2018 wasn’t terrible.

    I love the atmosphere and sound design in this movie. Case in point: When Riggan throws the martini glass and it shatters, you can hear the rest of the people in the restaurant gasp and go silent, their attention obviously now turned towards him. Then a few seconds later, they start to gradually resume their conversations.
    I don't know if that was part of the initial shot or if it was added later, but that sort of attention to detail just impresses me greatly.

      André Vila Franca I love it too, the pure opposites of each other, actor against critic, optimism against doubt and seeker against preacher. I think not only was this Keaton's character against his nemesis, but metaphorically speaking its the two opposing voices we hear in our minds when we want to go for something unknown to us. The fear and doubt wants to stay comfortable within the confines of what's normal and pre-existing ("labeled") and the curiosity and the soul wants to risk it all just for a glimpse of the possibility of potential.

    As someone who's spent most of his life on stage, I must say, this scene was written and performed for all of Us: the ones on stage, the ones who lose sleep over nightmares about forgetting your lines. To the ones who both love and hate acting on stage, because you can't live without it, yet 5 min. Before stepping onto the stage you always think: "Why do I do this to myself? Why do I willingly add anxiety and fear to my life?"
    And now, in comes the theatre critic. Critique in general, I'd argue, is Important for art to excel and ascend. But at the same time? You absolute, rotten bastards.
    You wanna give us critisism? Then you better be on that stage with us at the pivotal moments of the play, the dialogue, the dramatic arc of the story, and you better not fuck up One God Damn line, and THEN... Then you are free to critisize us as much as you fucking want. But until that day? Until you step away from the sidelines and come join us in the chaos, have a Little bit of respect for what we're trying to do, and find some god damn humility in Your "craft".

    It's a joke that Keaton didn't win best actor for this. This scene perfectly sums up the entire film/entertainment industry. The Academy would rather reward the young up-and-coming starlet than the middle-aged guy who's trying to get back into the game after never being given a chance really to show off his chops as a dramatic actor, and when he finally did people took notice but was overlooked because they found a way to "label" his performance in the context of the film against the backdrop of his own career. I think Birdman is easily the best film to come out since the turn of the millennium (again just my opinion), and at least the Academy got best film and director right and didn't give those to someone else who also didn't deserve it.

    The reason why Keaton losing to Redmayne made me so upset was because Redmayne has endless opportunities to win more Oscars. He’s young, he’s good looking, he’s talented, he’s everything Hollywood wants.
    Keaton, on the other hand, is well into his twilight years as an actor. He probably never thought he ever even had a chance of winning an Oscar, and his career completely fell off for about ten years. And then this role came around, a role he was BORN to play, and you can actually feel all of the frustrations he had for decades poured into this role. Year after year of people calling him a “blockbuster actor” or “superhero actor” and he never got the chance to show the true talent he had because of people like the critic in this film.
    And this was the first time he’d ever even been nominated for an Oscar. For the Academy to give it to Redmayne is such a slap in the face to Keaton.

    I love how throughout the whole conversation Riggan tries to keep his volume down while the anger swells up. It give the scene so much more power than if he was flat out shouting, because it shows that even though he is speaking truth, he cannot say it out loud because it would not be well perceived. It also makes the breaking of the glass much more intense.

I really recommend you to watch this masterpiece more than once. Since then, when someone asks me what is the best movie you have seen, I'm saying Birdman. Many scenes will remain in my head forever and I love to watch them again and again. The film perfectly portrays our current culture, all that we've gain and all that we've lost. Keaton raised the level of acting to enormously high level. I can't remember if I ever saw someone playing a role this perfectly.

    I don't understand how Birdman could have won Best Picture and Michael Keaton not winning best actor because he is the movie. Without Keatons performance the movie is nothing(almost). You can argue about Birdman winning best picture(personally I liked Interstellar waay more), but you can not argue about Keaton, he delivered one of the best performances of all time. The Oscars suck, but I guess that's not new to anyone.

      BulkAsFuck Terrible acting? Are you kidding? Bad writing? Well the dialogue may not be perfect at some times but it's not bad either. And human emotion? Are you serious? Audiences cried like little babies in the theater!! It's not a perfect movie, it has some minor flaws but you guys make it look like it's a bad movie. It's a perfect movie in terms of sci-fi and adventure and it's a lot more ambitious and a better experience than any of the movies nominated for best picture. Well Eddie Redmayne was great, also deserving of best actor, but I think that Keaton deserved it more just because of all the long shot sequences in Birdman, that showed some great acting ability from the actors.

    • @mmabuff101
      @mmabuff101 9 років тому +1

      I think part of giving bird man the nod for best picture was also a chance for Keaton to get on stage and speak, cause the main guy from theory of everything certainly deserved it. If it wasn't for him, Keaton probably would've won best actor and something else winning best picture. I honestly think the academy thinks that way, especially after return of the king won all those awards, yet two towers was the better movie in my opinion

      +Barca 97 I see Interstellar as one of those movies that wants you to use your brain while watching it...much like many of Christopher Nolan's films...and I think it's a brilliant film-making technique. Chris Nolan truly knows how to make a blockbuster film smart. Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Inception, the list goes on....the only exception is Man of Steel....that was bad.....though personally Ithink one of it's biggest problems was the clash of two different filming styles : Chris Nolan's style and Zack Snyder's style. Man of Steel in that sense is like that movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

    • @marcusnorgren1958
      @marcusnorgren1958 8 років тому

      Victor M
      I completely agree, but he only produced Man Of Steel though, and the problem with that movie was all the CGI fighting and destruction that was simply too much, and that did most certainly not come from Nolan. He would never make a movie that way. DC is trying to keep up with Marvel(I don't like it) and they're all about CGI and fighting so you can't blame Nolan for that one.

    • @victorm152

    That brief nervous smirk she gives Riggan after his monologue takes a hole different meaning at the end of the movie. In the end, she actually listened to what he had to say, and even though she kept her role as an icy-cold woman who couldn't be impressed by anything, it did ring a bell when he said she wasn't taking any risk. Because eventually, she did. She chose to support his play when she knew everyone else would be against it. This bottom line about the work of a critic, in my opinion, is very close to that of Ratatouille. Masterpiece, down to every single character.

It’s so explosive but somewhat controlled. This may have been purposely put in the scene, but if you notice, when Michael Keaton gets face to face with the critic, you can see her flinch as if the actress wasn’t expecting such an intense delivery. I’m speechless.

    I'm so happy the Academy honoured Birdman with 4 Oscars, but Keaton really deserved Best Actor. Keaton created a character from scratch and made it his own. Redmayne basically imitated Hawking. That fucking Oscar should've been Michael's. Another case of the Academy overlooking a great actor. Michael doesn't even have his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and I think that is also disgusting. Mickey Rourke, Kurt Russell and Keaton are all underrated...makes me sick. Keaton played Batman, Beetlejuice and Birdman...three big characters in movies...and he deserves more fucking respect. Keaton, like so many others was robbed. Let's hope Keaton wins when he plays Ray Croc in The Founder.

    • @mmabuff101
      @mmabuff101 9 років тому +2

      I feel like Keaton's performance was so good because the character he "created" was very similar to what he himself may have gone through after Batman. Being seen as nothing but Batman (or even beetlejuice). Unbelievably poetic that he played a character who was depressed playing a character on stage who was also depressed. Another thing I got was how sometimes an actor's life experiences can prepare them to play a role perfectly (even if they themselves aren't "great" actors in the sense they don't have a lot of range). So Thompson was prepared perfectly for his stage role, and Michael Keaton was prepared perfectly to play Thompson, the once glorified now forgotten actor. Great f'n movie....anyone who thinks its long and drawn out should go watch Batman and the Avengers instead (which I also love lol). This movie operates on a much higher level
