    Great video! I had my first Shotokan Karate class last Monday and I've had a total of 3 classes. I wanted to practice this before my next class which is Monday. I managed to do it 3 times in a row after slowly going through it with you. The spin was the most difficult but after I watched how you did it several times it finally just clicked haha.

      Brian Treadwell The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. After practicing martial arts for more than half my life. I would say the 2 main pieces of advice is to know what your goals are (competing, advancing rank, gaining skill, etc) and to enjoy/embrace the journey (not fixate on the results). These two insights are what will keep you consistent and in for the long run. Wishing you luck and a lot of fun!

    30+yrs of karate and I still practice Shodan, Nidan and Sandan Kata.
    I concentrate on many things, kime, breath, body vibration … also Internal waza
    Taikyoku in Japanese translates to Grand Ultimate (Yin & Yang) Funikoshi O Sensi was highly educated in the four books and the Five Classics (Confucian Doctrine)
    I can help to think that he thought of these kata in terms as internal waza (metaphysical concepts focused on the hara)

    When I studied Shorin Ryu Karate this was the first kata I learned. It is a great practice kata. According to Master Gichin Funakoshi a beginner should be able to do this kata in 40 seconds, but a advanced student should be able to do it with proficiency in 5-6 seconds.

I have watched several videos for this kata (i am 0 at karate, beginner, even negative one 😊😊) it was difficult for me to follow which way to turn and to remember the “mirror” effect of the videos.. So far i can’t find a video that did it right, labeling all hands and legs and turns at every move... Maybe that’s me asking too much, i dunno 🤷🏼‍♀️😊

    just one question. counting number of steps and their location I see that the finish point is not at the start point - is this correct that finish point may not match the start point? or some steps are missing?

      It doesn’t matter that much, does not have to be in the exact spot everytime

      Just rinse and repeat, practice. Slow things down, especially if you are new. Do not rush, the more you rush the worse your technique ends up. Take it as slow as you need. Then naturally you will build speed and power

    Hello Jason, can you also make videos for variations in the same kata....like block punch, double punch etc.
    I don't know the names of variation....I think it's called taikyoku nidan etc.

    Whenever I try to go from the block to the punch i keep facing to the side instead of forward even tho im trying to face forward any tips?

    • @SENSEIJASON

      It may be that your hips are not flexible enough yet to maintain the forward position. I would look into some hip stretches. The tightness may be what is holding you back.

    So when you do the big turns and your front foot becomes your back are you suppose to spin on your heel, front of foot or middle of foot for that foot?

    • @SENSEIJASON
      @SENSEIJASON  6 років тому

      Layer Lapse Haha, this is a classic question you will hear among several different karate groups, and you will also hear many different answers. The truth is do what works best for you, but keep in mind, for solid foundational basics and principles, I like to keep (or try keeping) my whole foot flat on the ground. This is to root my stance and learn to really drive from the floor. Keep that in mind and see what results you are getting 🥋❤️🙏🏽🔥⛩🏆
