Thanks for posting this! I studied Shorei-ryu 20 years ago and I learned 4 Taikyokus. But we called them (and I'm going to butcher the spelling) geidan (low block), chudan (middle block), jodan (high block), and kicking taikyoku. I couldn't for the life of me remember the exact sequence so again thanks for posting this!
Try using a heavy bag, or have a partner throw Mae geri keage (front snap kick), and you practice blocking it. Or try some of these drills: ua-cam.com/video/4Ljrg9E9eqs/v-deo.html

In some other shotokan organizations, shodan, nidan, and sandan different blocks are applied instead. Like for example gedan, jodan, and soto uke. They're just training and conditioning exercises for the actual katas. Something your sensei does to keep you busy while he talks on the phone. Even a monkey could do them!
At Taikyoku-Sandan, is that the Kokutsu-dachi stance while doing the ude-uke defense? The Kokutsu-dachi that I had learned in my youth is less wide than yours. Thanks for this tutorial, it brings back memories.
One is punching a the mid-level (solar plexus) the second one is punching high at the face. The taikyoku katas are just preparatory training katas, designed to teach and condition the student for the curriculum katas. Basically another way of doing kihon, they are not necessarily set, each shotokan organization does it differently. Shodan can be low block, Nidan high block, and Sandan inside to outside block. You could create further ones by adding other techniques like shuto-uke.
Damn our style is a mix of Shotokan and Goku Ryu but our Taikyoku Nidan is like the first with kicks added 😅 but I will practice the first one as their old videos look over the other shoulder before they turn but in the dojo they do it your way 😁

So the difference between shodan and nidan is nidan you aim for the head correct?
Yes that's a jodan zuki, aim for the nose, tip of the chin or my preferred the throat. This last one is strictly for self-defense, so be very careful!
