Fish the string through first, then slide the properly oriented fitting down the tightrope. It helps position the fitting and you have no string on the threaded side to cut or deal with.
You can make a wire hook to capture the free string end if needed. Tying a small weight or nut on the end of the guide string with allow the string to be held taught and directed toward the faucet opening by tilting the barrel towards the hole.
We do it a bit easier for us old folks but your concept is good and glad you made a video. Take a piece of paracord about 2 1/2 times the height of the barrel. No need to cut the cord, just make sure you have enough. In the very middle of that length of cord, tie on a 2 inch flat washer. Larger, if your mount is bigger. Just use a tight half knot so it doesn't slip around. You can untie it later. Anything you use must be larger than the inside mount. Next slip cord inside the mount, do not tie on! Be sure it is facing AWAY from large washer. The washer is what will hold it up against the inside barrel wall. Now, at the very end of the cord, on the side of the inside mount, tie on a smaller washer or nut that can go thru the new hole. Drop small washer and cord into barrel but leave inside mount and large washer on top of barrel until you get cord & small washer out the new hole or your inside mount will fall off the cord! We used a magnetic wand to grab the small washer and pulled it thru the new hole. You could make a wire hook also. You can take off the small washer if it will not go back thru the inside mount, you just need to be able to pull that cord out the bottom hole to pull the inside mount into place. Ok, now, pull the cord out from the bottom hole all the while also holding onto the top cord and drop the inside mount and large washer into the barrel [great to have help here). Pull the mount and large washer down into the barrel. Hang on to that top cord... you have to pull it back out! Keep pulling the bottom cord and it will pull the inside mount into place and the large washer will hold it there. Hold bottom cord tightly while you screw on the outside mount. You will have to slip cord inside the mount. Tighten but do not break anything! Untie the small washer and pull the upper cord up and out along with the large washer and you are done. We like using paracord because we don't have to worry about it breaking. Good luck!
@@johntre7656 the mount needs to go through the bottom hole with its smaller threaded side. So you need to make sure the larger flange on the mount is against the large washer. He explained the instructions very clear.
You don’t show the most important part. How to take out the threaded piece from inside the barrel through the tight hole? That’s my only question. The rest is simple
Friend donated a 55gal barrel like one of these to me when he moved . . . you don't want to know how long I scratched me head trying to figure out how to install a spigot into it.
The thing about this system is you have to have a good filter so that the barrel is not so dirty. Those gunk will pile up fast inside the barrel but is not so much issue for plants use.
The thing I can't understand to save my life is why anyone has to do this at home. Can't the people who make these water barrels figure out that people are going to need spigots on the barrels? They weigh 450 pounds when they're full. No one in his right mind wants to tip one of these things over to try and get the water out, and yet, they make spigots that attach to the holes on the top. What do you think will happen when you try to tip this barrel over? Hint: it's round. You don't have to have an engineering degree to figure out that these barrels need spigots on the bottom, and you don't need an economics degree to figure out that if they're made that way people will buy them. Why can't I find this for sale online without having to make it myself? Has the whole world gone mad?!
You must not be looking in the right places. I see them for sale everywhere online. Like someone else said already none of these barrels were originally made for rain barrels. They were made to transport liquids to companies that manufacture the final products that they sell.
Very good video. What is the diameter of your spigot? Because I went to the hardware store but they only have bigger stuff. The hole of my drum is 2 inches
Yes, if you’re gonna install a showerhead it’s recommended to have the barrel at least chest height or above so that gravity feeds that showerhead and there’s enough pressure for it to actually work. Install of a showerhead as simple as screwing it into whatever faucet.
they are holding up well. no leaks. i have them at my cabin. they do not leak. they have been in below freezing weather and had no issue through 3 winters now.
lets see if anyone else had some experience to share on this but, i would not use a spade bit because precision is required. if you are experienced and have a very steady hand maybe it might work...i have neither so would not try it.
Thank You for sharing.Im wondering if this could somehow be made to withstand heat.Im planning to use it in an off grid heated tub.Do You think the Rubber washers would melt etc?
not too much but enough to get the water out. if you could have it 4-6ft above where your hose is, it would be workable for watering, but not enough pressure to wash a car.
If you keep an eye on craigslist you can find them for free with things like potassium de-icer in them. End of winter is the best time to start checking craigslist free. I got four of them at no cost.
I found them when I drove to another town as it was in a lot with tractor parts or junk yard. Just drive around small towns and you might get lucky. I got mine blue ones for 10 bucks and I made compost barrel out of it. It is in Kilgore,TX

Lmao I love the background banter. Fucking hilarious 😂
Love it. Buffer tanks for pressure washing are so expensive. I’d rather just take a $50 drum and make it myself!
Super ideas. I’ll be using it on an old water softener barrel.
The bung hole 😂 bevis & butthead flashbacks
:-) not a phrase i get to use often.
Those are channel locks. Great video
you are right of course.
So this means you can use a pressure washer with this since it has a spigot, correct?
A pipe wrench. And I’m looking at this for direction. Wow. Pretty sure those are channel lock pliers or slip joint pliars
great vedio. ..Thank you from Jordan. I'll do it.
Thanks for the video. Helpful!
I am sure glad I watched this video. Thank You
Great video bro 👍

Crafty! Thanks for this simple tip!
This is perfectly. Thank you

You have to get the angle of the dangle correct!

is work, well done
Awesome video, great for earthquake prepping
Very good video. What is the diameter of your spigot? Because I went to the hardware store but they only have bigger stuff. The hole of my drum is 2 inches
the spigot that i bought required a 1.25 inch hole.
Is it possible to attach a shower head to that and if so can you make a video showing how to do so
Yes, if you’re gonna install a showerhead it’s recommended to have the barrel at least chest height or above so that gravity feeds that showerhead and there’s enough pressure for it to actually work. Install of a showerhead as simple as screwing it into whatever faucet.
Can I use this technique on a steel drum, or is it too hard to drill through?
Just get a hole bit that's rated for steel
Agreed. Not sure if the steel drum will hold up to drinking water standards over time but installing the spigot can be done.
It will work on a steel drum however it will start to rust eventually
Now I want to know how do you get the gutter downspout to fit into the barrel to collect your Rainwater???
Do you mean through the bunghole?
Just cut off your gutter about 8 inches above barrel top and buy a curved gutter to attach and it flows right in.
Buy a Downspout Adapter,No 0364AA, Advanced Drainage Systems
How are those spigots holding up after a couple of years using them?
they are holding up well. no leaks. i have them at my cabin. they do not leak. they have been in below freezing weather and had no issue through 3 winters now.
Can you give me the link for the Amazon product?
Dan - I got the 5005 kit but it did not have the connector piece. Any thots on where to get that?
Not from a thot I hope!
Would a spade bit work just as well for drilling the hole?
lets see if anyone else had some experience to share on this but, i would not use a spade bit because precision is required. if you are experienced and have a very steady hand maybe it might work...i have neither so would not try it.
@@danr97123he's right. Spade bits are very unpredictable.
I noticed you uploaded one vid 2 years ago and have recently begun adding more. Keep up the good work and I hope to see more videos from you soon.
thank you for the kind comments. i hope to do more vids in the near future.
Thank You for sharing.Im wondering if this could somehow be made to withstand heat.Im planning to use it in an off grid heated tub.Do You think the Rubber washers would melt etc?
If it hot enough to melt rubber it hot enough melt your skin. Just buy an electric water heater and run solar
Is there enough pressure to use a hose with that?
not too much but enough to get the water out. if you could have it 4-6ft above where your hose is, it would be workable for watering, but not enough pressure to wash a car.
@@danr97123 I see. Still useful though. Thanks for the response!
What is the model number of that product please 🙏
How many gallons per minute will flow through the spigot
The more water in the barrel, the faster the water flows.
Also the bigger diameter the spigot and hose the faster she flows. Garden hose will be slooooow.
How much are the rain barrels and where did YOU get them from?
I got them for $20 each. They were sold by a 3rd party that collects these from a food packaging factory.
If you keep an eye on craigslist you can find them for free with things like potassium de-icer in them. End of winter is the best time to start checking craigslist free. I got four of them at no cost.

Bung hole.... he he he.
That’s where the term came from. They’ve been called that for centuries. We modern civilized people gave it to the human term.
Good info. You might want to update your Amazon affiliate link to one that is in stock.
Thanks bro
"I think its called a bung, uh, hole..."
when you buy this spigot?
"bung hole" hahahahahaha
those are channel locks...not a wrench...
T P for my.........
Um
a bunghole lol.
