I cut the top out of my barrels with a sawsall and then took window screen , sewed it and ran a string through the sew pocket I made ( like in a hoodie ) to keep leaves and bugs out of the barrel .I used plumbing tape because that stuff would not release the hose big when it broke after 5 years of use . I make manure tea for my gardens and use some of my rain barrels to wash my vehicles . Saves my well . I have 7 rain barrels and I am adding adapters at the top of them so when 1 barrel gets full the water will run out the adpater into the next barrel through a pvc pipe . I grew up on a farm and my dad taught me all this . I am now almost 71 years old and have used rain barrels in every house i have owned . I retired in 2004 and moved from NJ to VA and rain barrels and manure tea are still my favorites for fertilizing my gardens and yard . I own over 3 acres up on a hillside . ALSO still use epsom salts in my manure tea and I have canned veggies my whole life

For your audience, I'd like to point out that it doesn't matter which direction the hose spigot is pointing. Just snug it up but not too tight because metal fittings will crack the plastic it's screwed into some time later. After it's snug, just loosen the washer nut and rotate the whole thing to the right until it points downward or whatever position you desire. I have the best experience using blue monster plumbing tape or paste for sealing the threads. Plastic threads do not typically have as tight a tolerance and that's why he applied the thread sealer so liberally.
Wow, you are a genius, your sorcery idea is very good, I was hesitating whether there is a way to fix a tap to a tight head drum before buying them. And here you are, showing us how it is done. Very kind of you, thank you very much.
Found this video after I created two barrels, one for compost tea and the other for water. Don't be like me and install the bulkhead fitting in the wrong direction.........it will leak. Excellent video, thanks for sharing.
Very helpful video. I live in Texas and the heat is bad all my grass was burn up. Next year this will be my project collect rain water for i can water on hot days.
The kit works great! However, be aware that the flow will reduce to a trickle as the water level approaches the level of the tap. Great flow with a full barrel.
Can you please tell me what is the size drill bit that is needed to drill through rain barrel? Thought it was 3/4" like spigot but was wrong. Thanks in advance!
Got the three I ordered today! What size bit did you use? I found a used Culvert 24", I believe. My plumber cut them to be over a foot in height. Making four from a six ft. piece reclaimed free. I added five bags of black rubber mulch to the culvert sections, only having three down spouts for rain barrels. My gutter man set them up so the gutters do not have to be dismantled to remove the strainer, that the rain barrel man installed. The spout is about s hand length above the strainer, which can be removed. The barrel would need to be removed empty. The rain barrel man said it will be 440 lbs when full. The culvert with rubber mulch weighs approximately 100 pounds when full.. It self levels. The barrel fits inside the black culvert two inches, so to remove it to clean it once a year, the barrel will need to be empty enough to pick up. The strainer can be easily removed, and is six to eight inches in diameter. If full of leaves or flowers, it is easy to remove, to empty. Then the barrel strainer hole can go up the two inches around the down spout to get the barrel over the culvert. The gutter man, and I, designed the spouts so the barrels could be removed. He added an extension that can be placed over the downspout, to extend in the event it is too far above the strainer. The barrels had cherry and raspberry flavoring originally. He said wash it out with dish soap, and plain water. I took mine to a car wash, only using the rinse water. He said do not put carwash soap in the barrel. It would have degreaser.
The rain barrel is raised to increase the water pressure. If the hose nozzle is above the water line in the barrel, the water flow will stop. Raising the barrel makes filling buckets easier.
I am making plans for this now! What great timing you have! ❤️Kacy How much do you sell them for? We might could get one next time we come up there to the cabin!

Extremely super useful!! My plan is to use this for my compost tea barrel. Do I need to apply some sort of screen on the intake or will the wide opening be enough?
Have you ever done a stand alone rain barrel? My husband doesn’t want me messing with the new gutters. I saw something online on how to build one with a garbage can lid turned upside down. But curious if you’ve ever created one. Thanks!
The more surface area you have, the more you’ll catch. If you have any sheds or anything like that, you can stick a cheap plastic gutter on it for a few bucks. You could use a piece of sheet metal or tarp as well to direct water.
I’ve been having to use my trash bin to collect rain water that’s falling from my rain gutter (landowner didn’t properly install it and the cement flooring inclines causing water to enter my house. I have to then go dump the water. I’ll be using this method to attach a hose leading to the back or street 😅
I know that you want folks to buy the kit and that is cool, but i have aquariums and source my bulkhead fittings from those companies. Please tell us what size bulkhead fitting you use.
Check out Uniseal. Way easier. If you dont need to hook up to a hose. You can avoid using wire, going inside the barrel, & glue. Just pop it in the right size hole. Get a small piece of the right size pvc & a pvc valve. Super easy.
Those threads are a tapered pipe thread designed to seal by tightening. I little pipe dope or tape seals it up everytime. Stop gluing those together please.

Thanks, very helpful. Question: Why glue the fittings, rather than use PTFE paste or tape? Respectfully, JB.
Those should probably work too! I just like to go over the top with the glue to be sure

I've heard about putting tarps up, sort of like a hammock in trees or on posts. Weight the center and put a hole in it to drain into the barrel
