I find with mine, that if I leave the charcoal/briquettes out, press the autoignite button, then slide the carrier with lighter in and wait for it to ignite - you can see what is happening to the lighter and if needed add a bit more pressure to the carrier to get better contact, or alternatively a quick blow of air down the hopper to the lighter when it is smoking loads but not lighting, gets it going. Once it flames up, then add your charcoal or briquettes.
