That was delightful! My uncle was an engineer who also had a great interest in hypnosis and hypnotized me a few times as a child (10-12.) I remember one session, he said he had a long piece of string and was tying one end around my left wrist and that there was a deflated balloon at the other end of the string. That’s such a beautiful core memory. It was wonderful to observe the practice in this session. Thank you, both.

A nice memory of your Uncle! My first experience of hypnosis was quite similar to your description - I was certainly aware of my arm raising, but was quite content to let it. I think hypnosis is fascinating and probably under researched.
The test itself was incredible to watch, but that last part where they chat about how it's all happening in the brain was fascinating. "You were complying with the instruction, but also showing that you can really reorganize your interception of your arm." It's like the instructions allow the brain to let go of 'ownership' of the arm while still feeling that it's attached to the body!

Your shoulders being level is likely related to your right side lower back pain. When you sit and lean to one side there are small muscles which become pinched and trigger what is sometimes severe lower back pain. I always used to sit with a lean but sitting straight up, in addition to taking a few 10-20 minute walks per day, assuming you are often sedentary, helped me more than anything. The best solutions are often the simplest ones.
Laughing at the fact that even David can be hypnotized. It’s a matter of how you were brought up as a child and how susceptible you are to travel into another mind state with the help & trust of another. Love it
The thing that amazes me his how effortlessly Spiegel seems to do it. It's like he isn't doing anything except a few gestures and talking. I wonder how important it is to have a deep voice?
I personally believes he "becomes" the subject temporarily. His voice is one thing, but note his body language and mannerisms during the hypnosis. He is definitely utilizing a spiritual method here alongside the verbal instructions
I suffered the same pain in the lower back and shoulders andrew, im 35, and that is because of , im celiac, check if that is affecting you to, after leaving wheat, no more pain, no more bad posture, and never feel sleepy again after meals!
I love Andrew Huberman so so so much! Absolutely brilliant man, and such a great sport! Love to see him do thinga that venture so far away from science and into the more 'spiritual' realm of the human brain and body! Can't say enough great things about him ❤ awesome video! Who knew hypnosis could be so fast and easy!
Oh, boy, that was inspiring to watch! Love how you said your arm didn't feel like a part of you ... I had a flash of thought that this is what it is like to be a spiritual being consciously experiencing the physicality of "body." Super cool, Andrew.
I'm an early adopter (i guess) of the Android Reveri app, which contains only short hypnosis tracks - I guess the new version will have long as well - and I can confirm the voice is definitely a trigger. Immediately recognised it.
Is there a way to guard against being hypnotised? There are some well known cases here of hypnotism being used in crime. People being hypnotised to go the the atm machine and withdraw their cash to give to the perpetrator.
@hubermanLabclips. First question about hypnosis. Can this be a treatment for mental distress? i.e. I have a friend who is a pacifist to the point of not being able to be around anyone who challenges him in anyway. He says he is 'broken' and runs away. He is 65. He also sees this as totally normal, but knows that has impacted his romantic relationships. If you try to address what he means by broken, it becomes worse. So although he says he wants to talk, he really wants to justify and tell the other person why they are bad. A viscious circle. Two questions: 1. Rather than years of therapy, can hypnosis be used to change the perception of broken into something like say: might make him laugh when he says it? If so, 2. Where does one find a reputable hypnotist in their local area?
Yep. And if you read one of the comments above made by someone claiming to be a Hypnotist. Your a Disagreeable person if you can't be hypnotised. Who wants to be labelled disagreeable ?
About a week ago I downloaded the REVERI app on my husband's iPhone, and I can not wait until I can use it on my android. Besides, according to the test, my husband can not be hypnotized ;-) I love Dr. Spiegel´s voice by the way. Thank you so much for the work you do.

Andrew and team, I listen every week. Ill be honest the title did not spark my interest. But WOW what a great episode. Thank you so much. And watching this hypnosis example was truly inspiring. Keep up the great work.
I'm surprised more wasn't discussed about the improvement of back pain. With so many suffering chronic pain and opioid addiction, I think it would be incredible to hear about the possible implications. Perhaps there is more to that in the full episode. I also found it particularly humorous that he seemed genuinely surprised at a lot of Dr Huberman's responses and perceptions.
Is there an element here of the subject wanting to please the person performing the hypnosis? I’m not hypnotizable that I know of but when I’ve had anyone attempt it I’ve always felt an immense pressure to “go along with it” or pretend it’s working when I’m still conscious. Does this happen to people who are hypnotizable?
Hypnotizability is a spectrum. If you are not easily hypnotizable you can learn how to do it. You have to remember that you are in control. You have to want to get into the hypnogogic state. It kinda like when you are on the verge of sleep. I was not easily hypnotized, but I read books on self-hypnosis and practiced and do it on myself. So useful for fixing my issues. I fixed some serious OCD issues!
What I'm about to say is going to sound like I'm doubting, but I'm just surprised. I have a hard time believing Andrew Huberman was able to be Hypnotized that fast and also into such a disoriented state. I think trust must be a key factor in Hypnosis because that's a lot of power to have over someone, especially as quizzical as Mr. Huberman.
You state "a lot of power to have over someone" but in reality Dr. David Spiegel is simply a guide. Think of it like learning the piano you could have the best teacher and still learn nothing if you don't follow the instructions. Hypnosis is like that where all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
Stand in a door jam with your arms straight down pushing out with both top of your hands against the door jam and count for 20-30 seconds…then step out and feel your arms lifting upwards by themselves….did this as a kid many times…I am sure this is the sensation he is feeling with his left arm….
Wish I could get myself to become hypnotized... I've been trying a few different ways but I always remain totally concious and in control of everything and at no point does any suggestion do anything for me... it's like being fully awake while simply having your eyes closed... :( sad because it might be a great tool to aid me in behaviour change, changing thought patterns,...
Same here, and I get envious when people can be hypnotized! I tried several times with different practitioners and it never worked out. Many things don't work out for me (e.g. I don't notice anything with EMDR). However nobody had admitted that some of us are just not hypnotizable. It is a shame because it could be of tremendous benefit. I appreciate the honesty and expertise. Andrew, I'm totally hooked to you podcast lab!! Thank you so much
Am I out of hypnosis yet? Lol! That was great! Thanks for sharing, Dr. Huberman! A new technique I hadnt witnessed before. Still not sure what it has to do with your back pain but I hope you reached your therapy goal! ...and I know what you mean by the crooked shoulders thing. I've got that, too. Take care of you. Thanks for everything you do! My family appreciates you more than words can say! 💖🙏🏼😊
Thank you for the demonstration. I believe that therapies like Ego State Therapy have a hypnotic component. Hearing the previous podcast on how hypnosis works and its efficacy made me wonder if that is why Ego State Therpy is so effective and quicker than talk therapy or CBT (cognitive behavior therapy). As a therapist I see people recover from trauma, procrastination, low self confidence every day with Ego State and saw no progress when I used CBT. Thank you for the amazing work in these podcasts.
9:37 “… DLPFC inverse connectivity with the PCC…” ??? Can someone explain these seemingly specialized and technical acronyms? What was he trying to say in what appears to be an explanation of the mechanism of effect of the hypnotic suggestion. I am at a loss…😮😕🤔 Anybody?! Please?
I don't think hypnotizability is affected B Self consciousness. I am very self conscious and from what I experience when doing stuff like guided meditation, "Autogenes Training" (don't know the English term) and NSDR, I gather I am pretty hypnotizable. Just give it a try! :)

Huberman jumps rope for breakfast
Plus you got some balls assuming huberman has less knowledge on the subject than you
this needs to go on an ASMR playlist
whoa what a cool video, i'm extremely looking forward to seeing this!
Laughing at the fact that even David can be hypnotized. It’s a matter of how you were brought up as a child and how susceptible you are to travel into another mind state with the help & trust of another. Love it
Hypnotism is how well you respond to propaganda as well. The smarter you are, the harder it isnto get "hypnotised"
The thing that amazes me his how effortlessly Spiegel seems to do it. It's like he isn't doing anything except a few gestures and talking. I wonder how important it is to have a deep voice?
The deep voice doesn’t matter. He’s hypnotized thousands of people and it’s all about the confidence.
I personally believes he "becomes" the subject temporarily. His voice is one thing, but note his body language and mannerisms during the hypnosis. He is definitely utilizing a spiritual method here alongside the verbal instructions
he was already hypnotized before, that’s why everything feels effortlessly in this video
Wauw …never really understood or new what to think of hypnosis…it s AMAZING
one quite known and respected hypnotist said that you should never let anybody to hypnotize you. i strongly agree for many reasons. people be aware!
I agree with you 🎉
I suffered the same pain in the lower back and shoulders andrew, im 35, and that is because of , im celiac, check if that is affecting you to, after leaving wheat, no more pain, no more bad posture, and never feel sleepy again after meals!
by the way, great video, this was very cool! Saludos!
What was the reason for pain ?
@@Q_QQ_Q inflamation by gluten, in the intestines, pushes the spine, the body try to avoid it, then, the bad posture causing the pain
@@robertobenedit ok . how do you identify it ? by which test ?
I love Andrew Huberman so so so much! Absolutely brilliant man, and such a great sport! Love to see him do thinga that venture so far away from science and into the more 'spiritual' realm of the human brain and body! Can't say enough great things about him ❤ awesome video! Who knew hypnosis could be so fast and easy!
Oh, boy, that was inspiring to watch! Love how you said your arm didn't feel like a part of you ... I had a flash of thought that this is what it is like to be a spiritual being consciously experiencing the physicality of "body." Super cool, Andrew.
Laura, true spirituality is to love your neigbour as yourself.
This is the first time I've ever truly believed in hypnosis.
I'm an early adopter (i guess) of the Android Reveri app, which contains only short hypnosis tracks - I guess the new version will have long as well - and I can confirm the voice is definitely a trigger. Immediately recognised it.
With that voice David should work in radio. The show would be hypnotic!
Haha
Amazing and therapeutic to watch! At the end he said " what happend there"!! 😂
OMG! I'm completely shocked by the show...if it's not Dr. Andrew Huberman I would assume it is a canning or tricky!
Same. Love him.
Notice how Andrew's voice deepened as he got relaxed

Is there a way to guard against being hypnotised? There are some well known cases here of hypnotism being used in crime. People being hypnotised to go the the atm machine and withdraw their cash to give to the perpetrator.
How come I'm just finding this now despite me looking through ur videos?

I think some of the hypnosis is about playing along. Especially stage hypnosis , people are sometimes too embarrassed to say it's not working.
Where do you take the test?
@@quantitradersignalservice5735 Please look the program "Dr. David Spiegel: Using Hypnosis to Enhance Health & Performance | Huberman Lab Podcast #60" , minute 01:01:50 ‘Hypnotizability’, the Spiegel Eye-roll Test :-)
@@quantitradersignalservice5735 In the app to try for free. Didn't work for me.
Thats a rabbit hole you just discovered
people need to take PEA instead of ibuprofen. back pain gone.
I remember playing with this as a child. We hypnotised each other to raise both arms. It almost felt like they where lighter than air.
I fixed some serious OCD issues!
i love andrew so much !
This video hypnotized me to take a nap
WOW! Amazing, Relaxing and Funny lol. Thank you Dr. Huberman and Dr. Spiegel
Honestly with that voice he could be reading a grocery list and still hypnotize people
What I'm about to say is going to sound like I'm doubting, but I'm just surprised.
Fascinating. Thanks for showing this. I’m interested to where hypnosis & Nidra intersect & diverge. Really cool stuff.
Any hypnotherapist will tell you that “all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.”
Yay, I was so confused cause I thought it was gonna be on the podcast and I was sad when it never happened
Thank you so much
Same, not everyone is receptive to it

That’s good, you have free Will.
This stuff is dangerous.
Same. It does nothing for me so far.
That was trippy! I did not expect that ... I also did not expect to Believe it and I believe it😮
Very nice. I have never seen anyone hypnotized
As a Rapid Transformational Therapy Practitioner and hypnosis is one of the key component that I use with all my clients
Brilliant😊
As fascinating as I find this, it just really makes me giggle.
Fun fact: That's a defense mechanism by the brain. Like, it'll also happen when some people are trying to get hypnotized.
Is it necessary to constantly keep your eyes up while they are closed? At 2:47 it looks like Andrew's eyes came back rolling down from above.
Yes they can repeatedly roll back in hypnosis.
Thank you for exposing yourself to this experience and letting us learn, lord bless 🙏🏽🫵🏽
Thank you for these doctor!!!!!!
Huberman’s voice 🥰
What a voice!
Thank you for the amazing work in these podcasts.
is this a plug for Ego State? 😅

I'm curious, did you back pain remain diminished after this session or did it return eventually?
"As your body is heavy, you develop a strong sensation to adore me and only me for the rest of your life and propose to me immediately"

Please?
I would really like to be hypnotized to address a couple of past events, but I honestly believe I am too self conscious to be hypnotized.
I don't think hypnotizability is affected B Self consciousness. I am very self conscious and from what I experience when doing stuff like guided meditation, "Autogenes Training" (don't know the English term) and NSDR, I gather I am pretty hypnotizable. Just give it a try! :)
I can't imagine ever being able to be hypnothised. Even if I wanted to
Closed minds learn nothing!
That was so relaxing!!
