Visualization works. I use it every day. Over 45 years ago, I envisioned making a paper airplane that I could fly outdoors and glide long distances. I accidentally invented a new concept in aerodynamics which traps a vortex and prevents the airplane from stalling. Today, it has successfully worked on a Darrieus Wind Turbine. I did not know anything about aerodynamics when I started. It is called the Kline Fogleman airfoil or KF airfoil. We are all forms of energy. So use that energy to entertain yourself and enjoy the results. We are all creative.

In 1996 I read a book on self-hypnosis, and it basically taught me to lie down and relax, and count slowly down from ten, and breathe deeply while doing so. Then picture myself going down deeper, like on a staircase, and when I got to one I would be in my ideal world, where I could see myself being successful at something. I used it to quit smoking. I had reached the point where I was over a pack a day. I had been smoking for fifteen years and had tried to quit numerous times. This time it worked. I gave my remaining cigarettes to a friend, and I haven't smoked since. But this was using a technique that I could do at any time, not just when falling asleep. Although sometimes I would fall asleep.

As he was talking about belief systems controlling us--and negative beliefs about taking exams (paraphrased)--I remembered two things from my distant past: first, the incredible stress I felt studying for college exams, and second, a particular midterm exam, for a really tough class, that I hadn't studied for because I had misread the class schedule.
I walk into class that day, sat down, and noticed how unusually quiet everyone was. I looked around and saw that every single person had her or his textbook and notebook cracked open, a dazed and worried look on each face. A moment later, the professor walked in with stacks of exams and blue test booklets and told us to put away our books. My first reaction: pure terror. My gut dropped through the seat, onto the floor. My second reaction: There's nothing I can do about this, so I might as well detach myself from the results of this test and accept my fate. For some reason that last thought made me sigh and relax. When I finally received my test and booklet, I glanced at each of the questions--and felt even more relaxed with the realization that I seemed to know the answer to every one of them, much to my surprise. As I wrote the answers in the booklet, I felt like I was "in the zone." Most of the test was made up of essay questions, and the answers flowed quickly and easily from my pen. In fact, I finished the test way too fast. I looked up and saw that everyone else was still scribbling, their heads down. Now, I'm not a genius, but at that moment I almost felt like one, as if I had tapped into an intelligent part of me I didn't know existed. As it turned out, I got an A-plus on that test--a no-study exam in a very difficult, dry-subject class. Probably the best test result I'd ever had. Listening to Dan talk about how our beliefs affect our performance has me thinking that my detachment from my performance on the test had opened my mind to a greater potential than I usually believed was possible.

I'm a stage hand and I do conventions in Las Vegas, one show we do every year is called Western Vet, it a convention of Veterinarian's on the Western part of the United States, well when they bring their spouses, they need to be entertained while their other half are in classes and presentation all day. So everyday was different entertainment, day 1- comedian day 2- inspiration speaker day 3 - hypnotist, can't remember his name but really nice gentleman, let's call him Bill, Bill ask me to add a little drama to his act by dimming the lights in the introduction, I did, and then he started to explain what and how he was going to do some snaps and claps and whistles and some people will fall under hypnosis. It was about 15 to 20 folks in the room, a lady in particular caught my attention, because she was very quiet and sat in the same seat, which was right in front of my tech table, her ethnicity was Asian, and very quiet and obedient. Well the 3rd day she sat in the same chair and ad Bill started his act, this lady fell under Bills Hypnosis. Bill brought her up to the stage and she was really under Bills spell. I couldn't believe it, her husband would walk with her to the ballroom before he went to his classes, she was legitimate audience member. Now the fun starts, Bill had her do some small things such as raise your hand when u say a certain word, then he said let's see what talent she has, and my mouth fell open, he had this quiet, obedient, Asian lady about 45 yrs old, sing Respect by Aretha Franklin which so much soul it was the unbelievable act that I've seen, it was believable, he snapped her out of her Hypnosis and she attended the next day just like she did the first 2 days, if I didn't see it with my own eyes are own mind I would not believe it. I put that on everything

I've been interested in - or perhaps I should say fascinated by - hypnosis in general, for years, but as incredible as I found it, I always felt it to be a discomfiting prospect. I have pronounced personality traits that some would correlate with highly suggestible people (fantasy-prone, have a very vivid imagination, engaged in it a lot as a child, some creative aspects) but at the same time I'm also fairly analytical and fear losing conscious control or volition, to the point that I've never taken any substance that would induce this (I'm no stranger to alcohol, but I never drank to the point I couldn't remember the following morning).
I'm not blind to the incredible phenomena that can be achieved via hypnotism, but nor do I pretend that its risks and abuses don't also exist. I'm of the mind that no external agent should have greater influence over us than we do ourselves. An unrealistic ideal, perhaps, but an ideal nonetheless. The thought of succumbing to an induction from a stage or street hypnotist sends me into fits of anxiety, even as I would like to think even my subconscious would reject any suggestion for amnesia. But at the same time, self-hypnosis as a tool for personal growth and positive change seems much more amenable to me as a concept.
I've been experimenting with various auto-suggestion techniques for the past week or so and I feel much better about myself already. I'm exercising more frequently, have caught up on personal affairs, my room is a lot more organised, and my overall focus, mood and confidence have noticeably improved from the previous month. It's subtle, but I notice it in retrospect - and it's at the level that I don't really care whether it's a result of increased levels of self-belief, a result of subconscious suggestions, or both. If I've ever been in a trance, it's probably been a very light one, but I had quite a meaningful personal revelation not too long ago which I don't think is coincidental. Thinking too hard about it seems counterproductive, anyway, so I'm happy simply to embrace it.
I think everyone should learn to unlock their innermost potentials and I just see this as one more avenue to doing so. But concerning hetero-hypnosis I would still advocate that people be judicious regarding whom they consent to accept suggestions from, as I've read a number of horror stories, too. Licensed hypnotherapists would probably be the best option, I have some extremely mixed feelings about stage hypnotists - I feel that something as intimate as the mind should not be toyed with for the sake of amusement.
