I'm about to be hypnotized tomorrow for treatment for PTSD. I just finished watching Andrw Hubermans podcast with Dr. Spiegel and I found it to be a really eye opening experience that challenged my preconceived notions about what the process entails and its true nature. I associated it with stage hypnosis and thought it was only somthing that people with weak minds would be susceptible to. That perception was very quickly corrected by both Dr. Spiegel and upon finding out Andrew himself had been hypnotized. I'm sure no one here would accuse Andrew Huberman of being weak of mind. Now with my newfound knowledge of what hypnosis truly is, a highly focused mindset, I am excited to see what this experience can reveal about myself and how it might help with my ongoing struggle. Thanks to both, Dr. Spiegel and Andrew Huberman. And thank you as well, Rich Roll.
I stumbled on something like this a while back that helps with insomnia; I lie in bed in a sleeping posture and keep mentally repeating to myself "Relax...relax....relax" Seems to definitely help.
Wow! So glad Dr Huberman introduced you both, so thankful that you invited Dr Spiegel on your show, his stories brought tears to my eyes. Just another "trance"formative Rich Roll Podcast
I agree - he has a wonderful voice for hypnosis.....or anything else! Whenever I've tried hypnosis I've found myself 'analysing' the voice of the therapist - rather than listening to what's being said. I must find a Dr. Spiegel hypnosis induction video.
Kinesthetic hypnotic inductions work on everyone. Just because one induction isn’t working for someone doesn’t mean you can’t be hypnotized. Trance states are intrinsic to the human neurology, meaning we literally can’t function without going through trances. It just takes the right induction (kinesthetic work best) and a deepener.
Totally agree that one induction style doesn't work for everyone, though kinaesthetic isn't always best (e.g. confusion works best for some). Whilst there are some people who are very easy to hypnotise, after nearly 20yrs doing hypnotherapy I think there is almost nobody that can't be if you use the right method for them. This is the main issue with scientific experimentation - the need for exact repetition/replication of methodology.
The Flow according to me is that state in which you are narrowly focused on your activity, but acting from a prospective of pure enjoyment and curiosity. You are competent in your ability to perform, and you disassociate from your judgement or opinion of yourself and others about the end result of your activity. You are purely performing in the state of care (from the heart) curious and alert about your surroundings, but not in the state of worry (from the head) expecting results or comparing with past events. You are collapsing TIME by being in the present and purely experiencing your activity without the filter of the self.
I do guided meditation hypnosis like audio to sleep every night. I have a lot issues from PTSD to chronic pain to insomnia and it makes me feel so much at ease and relax mentally
I am really appreciating these podcasts. A level of meaningful discussion and investigation that brings a sense of clarity in a chaotic time. Thank you.
I had hypnosis, dumped a lot of childhood trauma. It is not what people think it is and the only time you cluck like a chicken is if you had the propensity to do so in the first place. I cured a lot of chronic illnesses. You would be amazed how much we want to punish ourselves with chronic pain.

0:49 with all due respect, hypnosis doesn't ameliorate symptoms of trauma and anxiety. When use correctly, it CURES the underlying cause. BIG difference, but THANK YOU for shedding more light on this most efficacious and misunderstood methodology.
Dr., It is hurtful when politics enter this exciting conversation when it doesn't need to be. However, thank you so much for this beautiful information.
I read a book on self hypnosis by Dr Alman, and he claims that everyone is hypnotisable but not everyone responds to the same technique, just because you dont respond to a technique it doesnt mean you cant be hypnotised, and that makes sense to me
I adore Dr. Spiegel ! We were in contact when looking at feedback for his app. He was generous with his time, and I hope to work with him at Stanford one day! Thank you for the interview! Much love!
Wow! This has been sitting in my watch later list for like forever. I just started watching because UA-cam reminded me of it and within the first minute, I got really excited. This is cool! BUT as it's about two hours, I think, I'm going to get some food and water first. I haven't been this excited about anything in a long time! The brain is so freaking amazing. It's like a guardian angel sitting on your shoulder all the time, sometimes whispering things at you.
As usual, your interviews are transformative in and of themselves. This no exception. I think the biggest test for one in this interpersonal space is voice tone/cadence/mesmerizability ; ). Dr. Spiegel for the win. Mind opening, I’m ready! And I’ve lived these 63 yrs as a skeptic of this H word.
From what I understand from other hypnotists methods is that everyone can be hypnotized some people just take a little more work to get them there. Just a thought on that. The human brain is more flexible then we think, we just learn ways of trying to control things more then we should.
Great chat, Mr Roll. I use Hypnotism principles with my self and in helping clients achieve their goals over the last 3 decades Thank you Cheers from Sydney, Australia!

It helps you become what you were meant to be. If you want to become an entire other person that brings in a whole lot of other psychological issues. But I recommend hypnosis for removing issues "others" put in you or on you.
This interview is wonderful, I had always wondered if clinical hypnosis, would be beneficial for certain addictions, gambling, eating disorders. Also, beneficial for trauma. So happy and interested in this treatment, without heavy medications. Please keep making this awareness of treatment. God Bless!🙏😇
How do you find a good hypnotist? I went to one that was highly rated but she insisted I was hypnotized when I clearly wasn’t. Turned me off from hypnosis for quite a while.
Yes, I've had the same experience......it no doubt makes the hypnotist feel better if they can convince the client that they've actually been in a trance! It strikes me that the really 'good' hypnotists are the stage performers who can put - at least some - of the audience in the deepest of trance. However, David Spiegel really is a world renowned expert on hypnosis, as was his father.
You are aware of your problem and this is courageous. Andrew Huberman made a podcast about alcohol. You might like to listen to it? Keep going! Give us an update from time to time. Blessings!

Very nice interview :). This is my first intorduction to dr David Spiegel . I love the way he talks and it shows that he is taking his work very seriously and loveingly . There are couple of things I did not understand : When we talk about hypnotizable persons , wouldnt be more correct to say that there are people who are more alowing and people who are less alowing into the state of particular brain waves ; or the ones who have more freedeom of exploring it in their every day life and those who are not practicing it offten. Cause we all go trough all brainwave states all the time, right ? From deep sleep - delta, to alert conscious state - beta and sometimes gamma hi performance waves. So, its not about person being able or not to enter the certain brain wave , its just that he/ she is not so familiar how it is done ( and lets not skipp the first ingrediance which is Trust ). I would say that it just takes a bit more time and practice with some than the others :) . The other thing is : since you have withnessed imidiate change in phisiology when mind was instructed what to do and it has done it without obstructions , why do you still say that genes control ability to enter certain brainwave ?But, we all are experiencing all the brainwaves trough out the day . Isnt it obvious that mind is above the matter ? ( Not to mention multypersonality 'disorder' where one personality can have diabetes, while the other one does not ) . Just saying , cause we are still reluctant to really embrace the power of our own mind and that is not helping us in taking responsibility for our creations : for the better or for the worse . I appologize for my poor English , but I hope you have managed to understand what I wrote . Thank you again for this interview and I hope no one minds if questions are asked :) . All the best :)

Thank you both. This was an extremely inspiring podcast for me. About hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I am working on self-hypnosis and with a hypnotherapist and you provide me with very thorough background information about what I am actually doing. I'm going full throttle now, while I was still a bit hesitant before. Thank you again for taking the time for this and sharing this. greetings from the Netherlands. Reinoud
One nuance point about trigger warnings and a common misconception about why they are used. It gives control back to the person who is traumatised as in they know that something which has traumatised them is going to come up so they can regulate their nervous system and experience it or they can go actually no I'm in a bad headspace and this will make me spiral this second. They are used by accounts or in spaces which foster a sense of care and if out of nowhere they were to expose something traumatic then it would end up in a dissolution of trust
I have had this understanding about hypnosis as a state of suspended belief. (my words) Every time I talk to a hypnotist they dont get it, at all and to begin with. The two people I have hired were total failures at paying attention to my state. I recede from psychotherapy as a method of thought. It;s difficult for me to pin down what that means but I am sure it has to do with a set of assumptions that go with the word "only".
I had all my dental work done whilst in self hypnosis, and a colonoscopy. I get discount from the doctor because he saves drugs and time working with me, 😊
The interesting thing is that people with attention problems are often quite responsive to hypnosis. Having a qualified practitioner assist you makes it much easier - we know how to utilize that busy mind storm.
‘Trance-Formation’ is the name of the book from one of the well known names in Hypnosis Dr Richard Bandler. Well worth studying Richard Bandlers work if you want to learn a lot about Hypnotherapy.
I’ve been watching hypnotists for years. Like the ones on comedy shows who make people do funny things. And the alien abduction hypnotists I always thought it was bogus. Until I had it done. I went to see a past life hypnosis expert. I became interested in it, and to be honest I thought I’d probably regurgitate a load of movies I’d seen or tv shows and attach some memories and think it was me. The hypnotist struggled to get me hypnotised. At one point I said to her, I don’t think you are going to be able to hypnotise me. After 45 minutes boom, I was under. It was like participating in a movie of your life. I could even smell things. Felt the pain of broken limbs, went through the death process. It was incredible.
The "gilded cage" story reminds me of my advanced clients with Alzheimer's living-pacing around their home as if in a gilded cage. The effect of leaving a person in a hypnotic state as in the story and the effect of Alzheimers seems to look the same. Can hypnosis be used with Alz to delay the brain decline? I'd love to know about any research. MaryAiñe
1:17:57 It's a judgement thing. It's thinking that 8, 9 hours is long versus getting used to it and considering it normal. There was a time when I was using Freecycle and something was offered that I liked but at a distance and my only way to get there was by walking. I figured it might take 3, 4 hours and then I asked myself what would be wrong with that? So it becomes just something that you do.
I can choose to go into a state (you call it hypnosis I believe) *IF* I want to. It is about trust and a decision to trust. In a sense that is what you are saying , but I can choose and you say that people "just are". That goes with the earlier comment I posted.
I want to know what happens if you are hypnotized and was not taken out of it? How long can one expect to live in that state under their control..so to speak?
superb! puts in one talk all i learned since somewhere early 90s up til now... Must be the generation, lol.. Anyway , short comment on what was said about mindfulness. Yes it is that but so much more. I am using nlp , self-hypnosis, trance states, meditation , mindfulness, and the Zone/Flow -state, all learned from great teachers through mostly books, and a lot of experimenting and practising in experience. No formal training, because practising it was enough to learn all that from the inside . I think this is what they call Mindscience now. And interestingly enough it blends perfectly with the religious/spiritual teachings, too, although people prefer to ignore that . Stuff of future evolution of human kind, here now. Finally ! And i am so happy here is this talk. But kinda hard to understand some of the language maybe for some people, which matters to get word out, on all these kinds of subjects . That said a Dr. Joe Dispenza is doing a pretty good job on that one, overall . Thanks a lot for this food for my soul!
As someone who meditates every day due to Chronic Back pain it's an interesting thing to actually look at as a subject. There's Self Hynosis meditation I've used but as was said, your hoping the surrounds will leave you alone to do so and with Noise Cancelling headphones these days, it's a lot easier but there will always be that one dove in a tree that'll get you more distracted some days more than others but also, how much actual intention you can put in on any given day. There's some days There's Absolutely no way I'll be able to meditate. Mostly though, as I've been doing in so long, most days it's achievable as a pain management system BUT the minute I arise and get to things at hand, pain returns so Meditations have literally saved me from hundreds of hours of pain and kept me sane but it's only a temporary affect. Thank You though for the great insight and an awesome conversation into Hypnosis and 🙏💙✌️

Absolutely
The Elman induction has a high response rate, but depends on the practitioner skill and confidence also
Totally agree that one induction style doesn't work for everyone, though kinaesthetic isn't always best (e.g. confusion works best for some). Whilst there are some people who are very easy to hypnotise, after nearly 20yrs doing hypnotherapy I think there is almost nobody that can't be if you use the right method for them. This is the main issue with scientific experimentation - the need for exact repetition/replication of methodology.
As a hypnotherapist, this talk is so valuable. Thank You Dr. Spiegal! Rich asked all the right questions. Thanks for this excellent conversation.
Thank you Rich for enriching our lives by educating us! And thank you Dr. Spiegel for further educating us. You both are amazing!!
I do guided meditation hypnosis like audio to sleep every night. I have a lot issues from PTSD to chronic pain to insomnia and it makes me feel so much at ease and relax mentally
I’m a hypnotherapist and love this reference.
I’ve been hearing about this man and meaning to learn more about his work.
Thank you.
WOW! That will be a GREAT one! Looking forward to see this episode... His voice is incredible!!!
Dr has beautiful voice. Should read books on tape and meditations too.
I believe Louise Hay says that pain is caused from guilt and wanting to punish yourself
@@Harmony7771, I'm sorry, I don't know who Louise hays is, I was just going by my experience and others I've seen. If she is published I'll look her up, she sounds interesting.
Stay well stay strong stay cool 😎😎😎.
Hi! I am happy to hear hypnosis worked for you!!! Can I ask who your hypnotist is? I am looking to release trauma and stop my inappropriate anxiety response. Thanks so much!
@@SuraDoes I'm sorry, I had a card but I lost it when I moved and it was quite a few years ago. Maybe I should have had her hypnotize me to remember things. But look up Maressa peers website she's a leading expert on the subject and I believe there is a list of people she's trained.
@@sheilalopez3983 Louise Hay is amazing. You find a lot of her teaching and books. on youtube
I read a book on self hypnosis by Dr Alman, and he claims that everyone is hypnotisable but not everyone responds to the same technique, just because you dont respond to a technique it doesnt mean you cant be hypnotised, and that makes sense to me
May god be with you Dr. David Spiegel You and your fathers work (May peace embrace his soul forever) are connecting the Mind Body to reality.
I adore Dr.
Been looking forward to this interview! Feeling better already!! Good work all!!!🙏
As usual, your interviews are transformative in and of themselves.
As a certified hypnotist when I feel down immediately I can change that and feel better
Excellent, outstanding interview!! Thank you so much Rich and Dr. Spiegel.
Great chat, Mr Roll.
I use Hypnotism principles with my self and in helping clients achieve their goals over the last 3 decades
Thank you
Cheers from Sydney, Australia!
This was such a great interview. Thanks to both Rich and Dr. Spiegel. I wish hypnosis were more affordable and that this interview could have included a little more instruction on self hypnosis.
Affordable? You can find some offering their services online for less than 30$ an hour.. but then how do you expect Hypnotist to pay their bills?
@@quor5103 I had never seen anyone offering hypnosis for under $100 thanks for the information. By the way everyone wants to pay their bills.
Around 35 minutes was a good place to make a note of the idea that children are doing The Great Work and to honor their concentration are basic attributes of The Montessori Schools which are a method of education. (see Dr Marie Montessori, Italian)
Wow, I listened to this interview in chunks over a few weeks, as I needed some relaxation down time. Just mere listening was actually therapeutic.
But Wow!!, what Utterly fascinating, educational, and inspiring information. Ioved learning about hypnosis the so many areas touched upon, especially re change in consciousness.
Thank you both Dr Spiegel and Rich
Separated dad. Sons birthday coming up. Called the mother saturday morning, no answer. I was catatonic for about half an hour. Totally despondent all weekend. Was very excited and motivated to do lots of things before attempted that phone call.
Have this guy on again!! Fascinating. Thanks.
It helps you become what you were meant to be. If you want to become an entire other person that brings in a whole lot of other psychological issues. But I recommend hypnosis for removing issues "others" put in you or on you.
This podcast brings such amazing value
This interview is wonderful, I had always wondered if clinical hypnosis, would be beneficial for certain addictions, gambling, eating disorders. Also, beneficial for trauma. So happy and interested in this treatment, without heavy medications. Please keep making this awareness of treatment. God Bless!🙏😇
It can profoundly help. And much safer than psych drugs.
I found you through Andrew Huberman and am so glad I did. Thanks for your work. Also, thanks to Dr Spiegel for the offer of your app!
I suffer from alcoholism. I'm gonna look into this more. I heard it works.
Ps the real talk starts at 6:35
You’ve got this my friend, one day at a time, and remembering what side of history we want to be on. You’ve got many people routing for you.
Pls report back .. best wishes it helps you & many
You are aware of your problem and this is courageous. Andrew Huberman made a podcast about alcohol. You might like to listen to it? Keep going! Give us an update from time to time. Blessings!
@Phoenix really no free will? Then where is the agency of the human being and where does motivation enter without it?
He's has such an asmr voice im already hypnotized, as per usual great interview Rich

@@narayanmenon3900 be careful of flashing lights and rapid stage Hypnosis induction, a gentle hypnotic or self hypnosis practice should not hurt you , consult your doctor and work with an experienced hypnotist online or in person to get proper instructions.
Will you add timestamps/chapters to the video for more comfortable listening? Thanks!
thank you for saying it
The teachings of Seth (channeled via Jane Roberts) say the same. For some people when this knowledge via a physical human it's acceptable and believable. Happy it gets out there though 💖👌🏾
That comb over thing is my focal point. 🥨

Reinoud
What an enthralling conversation!
Thank you soooo much that was an awesome interview help clarify hypnosis and the depths and benefits. Thank you Rich Roll and David Spiegel.😇
I enjoyed this show, I wish his book was on Audible!
Great interview, but I wish you had asked him about Dr. Milton Erickson!!
And about Dave Elman
I have had this understanding about hypnosis as a state of suspended belief. (my words)
Every time I talk to a hypnotist they dont get it, at all and to begin with.
The two people I have hired were total failures at paying attention to my state.
I recede from psychotherapy as a method of thought. It;s difficult for me to pin down what that means but I am sure it has to do with a set of assumptions that go with the word "only".
I am a hypnotist. Thank You Rich, one of the best interview I ve watched on the subject !
Check my comment out can u give me any

Thank you so much Dr David Spiegel for taking this time to educate us about Hypnosis. I appreciate you Sir

I don't feel I can get into a hypnotic state with my adhd. My mind is storming with thoughts

Just got that book. Richard Bandler is a pioneer in this field.
I would love to hear more yet …. Thank you both.
I love the suggestion to call hypnosis Neuro-Absorption Protocol (NAP)
wow thanks for this amazing conversation rock on Rich Leigh Martin
Loved the discussion. What type of water do you drink? I like the bottle.

Thank you
Brilliant and fascinating interview! Thank you both.
Sir, can hypnosis be used as a tool for treating psychosis. Does it really help . Can PTSD lead to psychosis .
I want to know what happens if you are hypnotized and was not taken out of it? How long can one expect to live in that state under their control..so to speak?
I actually searches and made sure that he is not david speigel who appeared in Johnny Depp court before even opening the video.
superb! puts in one talk all i learned since somewhere early 90s up til now...
Awesom information Thaks!!!
