Great story and what an honor to get to work with that Walnut with such a history, Kimsey! You really did that tree proud! Very entertaining video, perhaps your best ever! Great job, my friend! 😃 Phil
Absolutely amazing wood! And you the guy who got to turn all that WALNUT with such a historical edge. Put a couple of marks up on the wall to hold that memory.
Just beautiful! I've turned a few bowls from special family trees- its always an honor to do so. Love the work you did with these (and beautiful finish too😊).
Good evening, Kimsey. Wonderful video. The story was very interesting and made the bowl turning all the more fun to watch. Your designs were excellent revealing gorgeous grain. The family will enjoy the bowls and re-tell the story many times.
Masterful job creating heirloom gifts for the Shook family. Kudos my friend!..... Nothing like a Water Moccasin guard snake to do the job! as well.....
Absolutely great video, always so entertaining and this one is one of the best, those bowls are priceless great job, looks like you live in a very beautiful part of the world, thanks for sharing. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Thank you kimsey that's a terrific story about the tree and the family now the tree will live on to tell a hole new story. You did the tree proud. 🏅🏅🏅 Still would love to here you speak that accent it adds more character to your channel. Ernie smith from brisbane Australia
Very nice way to memorialize that hog hanging tree for the Shook family. I see you were wearing dust protection while turning that walnut. I find that walnut dust really irritates me and I have to protect myself as well. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks David!😎 It was some pretty cool grain, I split pieces that were tree crotch pieces, if you can find some where where it has some tree limbs that’s where to find some pretty cool grain, where the tree forms the tree limbs usually neat grain, Take care buddy 🤝
Wonderful heirlooms you have created for the Shook family. Treasures to be handed down for sure. Enjoyed the music but missed your narration. Always enjoy the nature scenes. Great video! Thanks, Kimsey!
Yay there you are - good to see you Kimsey! Wow this was a journey - fantastic story and great history too - and you're so lucky getting your hands on such amazing material to turn! I loved the way these bowls turned out - each one of them different, and each one beautiful in it's own right - my favourite was the wonky rimmed bowl it looks so natural. All the best Kimsey, look forward to the next one!
Howdy Paul! Glad you enjoyed the video buddy 😎 I liked that wonky rimed one too it was one of my favorites also, if you was ever in the neighborhood I would share some with you to turn All the best to you to Take care 🤝
Thanks Stuart! 😎 That bear has been getting into some of the neighbors bird feeders, fellow just told me couple days ago, I don’t mind those snakes but I dread the rattlesnakes coming out there is always quite a few around the house every summer, ohh and those giant yellow hornets 🐝 😣 One flew in the house yesterday evening 😬 😄 Have a good one 🤝
Great video. You're very humble, you are very skilled in woodturning. Those bowls look fantastic. I never knew about wetting them with soapy water to keep them from cracking as they dry. Was the wood pretty dry already? I really like your choices on design for each of the bowls, you seemed to bring out the potential of each bowl blank. I look forward to seeing more of your turning. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for tuning in Glad you enjoyed the video !😎 someone told me about the soapy water treatment some years ago, it works pretty good, sometimes you will still have cracks here and there but the good out weighs the bad from my experience of using it, the wood wasn’t dry but the moisture content wasn’t as high as some stuff I have turned in the past, Take care 🤝
What an a mazing set of bowls which I'm sure the Shook family will love. Great back story on the Tree and the Shook Family. Take care Kimsey. Cheers, Huw PS What was the snake?
Beautiful results!! Argh I just love Walnut! What size diameter was the largest blank when you started (if you could guess??). Ive been working on a super old lathe with small 10" diameter capacity and want to upgrade and curious what size lathe could pull off something like this project. Very nicely done and thanks for sharing your soapy water trick, I am a newbie so any new info helps!! :)
Thanks I appreciate it!😎 Sorry I can’t remember the diameter of those, but anyway when I first was looking for a lathe a friend told me to get something with at least a 2 horse power motor, so that’s what I ended up getting, I started learning on a super old lathe myself also with a around that same diameter capacity, it didn’t have variable speed either, that’s very nice to have also on the lathe, take care and happy and safe turning 🤝
Great story, hard work but beautiful results. I know you got a lot of satisfaction making these bowls. Great work! By the way, I assume you were raised near by but how long have you lived at your current location. It looks very homey, comfortable and just like what you want. Take care!!!
Thanks Zetus I appreciate it!😎 Always lived in this neighborhood but in different houses in the neighborhood, and that place is just about a mile up the road maybe 2 at the most, I’ve lived where I am now since 2004, Have a good one buddy 🤝
What a wonderful opportunity, and you did it beautifully! so how many bowls did you get to finish? I've been turning for 20+ years and I've never heard about the soapy water, I presume it helps retard cracking?
Thanks Howard 😎 I turned 7 total, Someone told me some years ago about the soapy water, and my luck with it the good outweighs the bad, Have a good one buddy Happy turning 🤝
Great story and what an honor to get to work with that Walnut with such a history, Kimsey! You really did that tree proud! Very entertaining video, perhaps your best ever! Great job, my friend! 😃

Very nice way to memorialize that hog hanging tree for the Shook family. I see you were wearing dust protection while turning that walnut. I find that walnut dust really irritates me and I have to protect myself as well. Thanks for sharing.
😎😊Thanks for your support Jim,
It is some pretty rough dust of the walnut, doesn’t smell to good,
Happy turning 🤝
All I can say is WOW.🪱
😎
Excellent video! I turn a lot of Black Walnut also but you have some very nice figure in that wood. Beautiful!
Thanks David!😎

Very nice set of bowls Kimsey! Seeing a bear in the backyard and a big snake in a tree are not pleasant discoveries IMO.
Thanks Stuart! 😎
That bear has been getting into some of the neighbors bird feeders, fellow just told me couple days ago, I don’t mind those snakes but I dread the rattlesnakes coming out there is always quite a few around the house every summer, ohh and those giant yellow hornets 🐝 😣

I read "Black Walnut" and knew it would be amazing 😊 you didn't disappoint Kimsey... awesome video 😊❤ and the footage at the end was beautiful😁
😎😊Thanks Heather!
What a beautiful homestead you have there, nice walnut bowl’s also! Any trout in that creek? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!😎
There’s not much fish in the creek, i wish there were though!

Great results…. Well done. Just my opinion… prefer no music… i think it better to hear the tunes the lathe and tools sing…
Thanks and Thanks for your thoughts! 😎😊
What kind of snake was in the tree?
If was a rat snake, I think he probably just had a snack and was taking a break waiting for his food to settle 😄
