I love this stitch. I wish Fiber Spider would demonstrate a GrannySpike Blanket. I’ve looked at other people’s videos but they don’t compare to his meticulous work, video, and instructions especially for straight sides.

Oh my gosh Craig, I don’t know how you do it! You have converted me to liking the look f granny squares. I have enjoyed crocheting them as they are quick and mindless once you know what to do, but I have always disliked the look of them. Isn’t that awful? But there are a number of granny square patterns that I simply adore and this is one of them. There is another you did with treble or double treble crochet stitch spikes that is simply stunning, especially done with variegated yarn. I made a baby blanket with it in a rainbow variegated yarn that turned out amazing if I say so myself. I made it for my Godson who was adopted, even knowing he was unlikely to make it to his second birthday as he has some severe illnesses, poor wee man. So his parents decided if he did not have long, he would be surrounded with love and happy colours. So rainbows everywhere including his favourite blanket, made following your pattern. He has just turned 3 and it is lovely when the Dr’s get something like this wrong. He is the happiest little guy although still in 1 yr old clothing. But he runs and plays with his siblings as if there is no issue…and his granny square spiked “blankey” goes with him! 😂 ❤

The spaces in the stitches is just enough that you don't overheat without toes poking out if you enjoy turning yourself into a burrito with your blankets. I think I used this stitch on my warmer weather afghan. It's worsted weight, but a cotton/acrylic blend.

Love this!! Next, please do this for a blanket, too?
I really like the idea of skipping the chain between clusters to make the fabric more compact - and would LOVE to see you do the granny spike stitch that way in blanket form. Other YT videos show the granny spike, but with that chain between clusters.
I could probably figure it out for myself, but I get confused at the beginning & end of rows.
Anyway, thanks for another great video! Your tutorials are always wonderful.

If one wanted to change colors each row, but not worry about weaving in so many ends, they could do a rectangular shawl/scarf and then add extra yarn turning the ends into a fringe.

This is a great tutorial, I love that you spent more time with us, I really enjoy watching crochet and your voice is soothing.
The idea of changing colours is exciting, I'd love to see the effect of how it looks done row by row or multiple rows at a time, it sounds super cool. I'll be trying it for sure after I finish a couple of my ongoing projects. Thanks!

Thank you, FiSpi, Hiya😊 This is so pretty, solves my search for a pattern to use a similar yarn -all Monet type colours which needs just this pattern for my sis’s future shawl. I WAS trying to figure out a double sided Tunisian SHAWL from your tuition for a scarf, but using a solid one side. But my mind has been a bit iffy working out the increases… You teach so well & pleasantly😊 I made her your Lace Embrace Shawl beginning of Covid in LB Ferris… which overwhelmed her! This will be in Paton’s Sierra which is DK & has a small % of wool in it. Yum. I made an Hungarian stitch blanket for myself in same yarn(still not fastened off LOL as I plan adding to it’s size!). For now from Australia Nite-nite💓from jul, pepe&chas💤 🥰JC&P🎶 🦜🦜

This stitch looks so beautiful worked in that yarn. I think I might use a base colour (claret/burgundy) with a second colour being whatever I pull out of my scraps drawer and then use it for a granny spike stitch square or rectangle for a doggy blanket. I'm currently making a couple of small ones with C2C because a) I love the stitch and b) I think it may be chew resistant.... but this would make a nice easy change without too many holey bits. I've also used Tunisian for chew resistant blankets too. There is a lot of the claret because I didn't have aran (4) weight for the scarves I wanted to make and someone said use 2 strands of DK (3) .. i was very dubious as I was sure that 2 x DK was chunky (5) as this was also originally known as double double [Double Knitting + Double Knitting]. I shouldn't have listened, my instincts were correct so I now have about a ton of the stuff!!! I can't say watch this space because photos won't post on YT comments

For the "spike" stitch I'm trying an Extended DC and it seems to work out great. I'm not sure what the correct definition of Extended DC is but the one I learned is you YO, go into middle st, YO, pull through one loop first then YO, pull through 2 loops, YO pull through 2. The Treble seemed a little too much for the yarn I was using...it left kind of a bump.

Hi Craig. I love this stitch. My youngest daughter doesn't like the "holey bits" with a normal granny stitch. For a granny square could you show us how to work the corners please? I'm guessing the same way that the point is worked on the shawl (Like a normal granny corner???) but wouldn't want to mess up. EDITED to say that I made a granny spike stitch square blanket in a super chunky yarn (sorry, no idea what US weight for that is) for one of the doggies with a 5.5 mm hook and it's super thick and squishy .. be great insulation on the concrete floor of the outdoor pens
