A lot of the critics in the Comments offering (correct) advice are forgetting the difference between 'drive it like you stole it', 'drive it like you own it', and 'drive it like you can hit the RESET button when you screw things up'.
This guy loves cars. He owns a very precious dream car. He'll have seen everything that you've seen about performance driving over the years. He probably knows everything that you know and maybe even a little bit more. He's probably got more real driving experience than you.
Do you honestly think that he doesn't know what he could/should be doing to get the best out of this car? Of course he bloody does. But he's also the car's owner, and that makes things entirely different. ENTIRELY.
Think about it: in the real world, in a car like this, one hard lap could easily land you with a £50,000 bill (special track-day insurance cover + 4 trashed tyres, brakes, clutch/transmission, a MAJOR service, and the expense of cleaning those nasty 💩stains off the driver's seat).
And that modest £50,000 donation to the nearest paper shredder in exchange for a few poxy UA-cam Views from bored teenagers is assuming that things have gone relatively well.
Push really hard and you could destroy the car's gearbox [price unknown], blow a £160,000 engine, or smack your £1,000,000+ machine into a barrier.
Yeah. Smash that clutch pedal. Blip that throttle. Snick those gears in. But be ready to sell your house, wife and kids to pay for looking cool on another one of those UA-cam 'fail' videos.
Very well written
letting the engine equal road speed by letting the clutch later is still more harmful to the transmission and risky because of the risk of skidding the wheels on a turn than properly blipping the trothle as you call it. I rev match my shitty cheap SUV with heavy flywheel and my passengers don't even feel it. I did it once like this driver did and I almost end with their teeth in the back of my head.
@@mgcharoudin 275/35r19 and 345/30r20 fit on stock wheels and would help reduce the scraping heard in the video, even though 10/13 inch wide wheels would be optimal for handling.

@@GetOffMyLog i dont agree with that, a lot of customers face problems with the clutch from cgt
It's crazy how the car drops 4k revs after a second of clutch. A flywheel so light it makes the car pretty undrivable unless you're slamming gears.
Just very slow shifting, which I guess I understand since its not a 3000 euro shitbox like most cars driving there XD
From the way he's shifting like this, it's quite obvious that the owner seldom drives his CGT, hence he's not used to the its unique throttle response and clutch characteristics. But good for him that he's taking it to the track, and really enjoying the car. This is where this car belongs, instead of driving like a madman on the streets., causing nuisance and accidents. Bravo
No flywheel so even harder to drive. Need to rev match every time you down shift in a car like this.
@@johnmitchell2269 exactly, I'm saying he's lacking real time practice on this particular car. He's shifting way too slow. Just saying…
@@KartingTaiwan No, it's not about shift speed per se. Yes, you could slam the shifts through. But you could also blip on upshifts as well as down shifts to rev match.

If you want to do some reading, check out the original Car and Driver review from 2004. Other than the clutch being difficult, they said the car was easy to drive and basically unshakeable because of the insane levels of grip. These only get a bad rap because of the guy who killed Paul Walker, in my opinion
The long gearing and the speedometer scale make it look and sound so slow until you look at the actual numbers. O.O Amazing car and surprised at how much the owner is actually pushing for his first time out with this car.
Especially with crap tires… probably set to street pressures.

The weight of the owners balls helped massively with the down force. No but seriously massive respect to the owner for tracking this thing. Not many people drive these things, let alone track them, let alone track them at the 'ring. He did justice driving that too. SpongeBob a proper mad lad for doing this.
I’m surprised at how fast the engine falls down in revs as soon as he’s off the gas and on the clutch, no wonder that car has a reputation as a difficult car to drive, kudos to the driver to get it on the track on such a crowded day.
It does have an engine derived from porsches failed 90's F1 project. So it's basically an F1 engine.
The shifts are so slow and Rev matching is a mile off , it’s quite off putting and isn’t doing the drivetrain/clutch any favours
Insanely lightweight flywheel.
It could be remedied if the driver had kept some throttle applied during the shift. For instance E36 M3 with ITBs requires the same technique. Insanely cool car though.
@@timessix8434 The E36 M3 (Euro or US) doesn't require throttle to be applied during shifts. The flywheel isn't particularly light, and the ICV creates rev hang in order to "facilitate" shifts and "improve emissions", whatever BMW meant by that.

It's refreshing to see a car without rev hang.

very entertaining to watch. The guy clearly knows what he's doing. Very gentle on the inputs, good safety margin, but still quite quick.
His shifting is horrible, though.
His clutch needs to slip on every upshift because he lets the rpm fall too much between each upshift.
This guy probably only drove cars with rev hang earlier, and is used to shifting slowly
I'm sure everyone in the comments could tame this beast first time driving it on the ring from the looks of it...
Probably not. But I did visit the chat after listening to the rpm and having seen the rpm. Being able to notice the clutch got some extra work doesn't mean I can do better myself - just that as this car has quite a lot of hp so it's big forces to handle. And a big price tag to replace the clutch.
But it isn't his first time driving it... He owned it for 5 years

His upshifts are scary (considering the cars clutch reputation). He drops like 3K to low and lets the clutch slip to compensate. You can literally see how much it unsettles the car by how much the camera shakes.
Edit: you would think after 5 years of ownership, one would have learned that one of the fastest reacting engines in the world with a super light flywheel needs a bit of gas blipping to match the revs...
Edit 2: since there are many commenters calling out other commenters for backseat criticizing:
1. you can be criticized by anyone, if you decide to show you actions publicly
2. you don't need to be Walter Röhrl himself to be able to criticize someones driving ability. I don't understant where this notion come from, that you need to be able to perform something yourself to be allowed to point out someone elses mistakes. By that logic, only Michael Schumacher would be allowed to commentate F1 races where Hammiltons is taking part.
I agree. I get that the car has a light flywheel but it looks like he just doesn't get the idea. At no point does he try to shift faster or hold the revs.
That was my idea also, he doesnt know how to shift it or wants to be carefull but makes it worse instead.

And on that day, not a single shift was properly performed... be it up or down. What a disgrace that was. It’s not like he can’t drive either, he can obviously hold his own on a track. You just KNOW he thinks he’s babying it and caring for it......... what a shame.
Babying it? It sounds like he's tearing that clutch up lol
@@kantina4765 Thats what ryb is saying, the owner thinks he is babying it but in reality he is tearing up the clutch
Since when is driving your own car a disgrace? As title says: Never tracked. Its great that you are striving for perfection when driving, but it doesnt justify the attitude.
Last time I was at The Ring... 2006....Walter Röhrl was test driving the GT on a couple of my laps at the same time.... He is an amazing driver... and took the time to answer a few questions that I asked him in the Paddock afterwards. Great driver.. Great car... and a nice decent Guy... Made my day something special.
oh YES. I've been doing this on Gran Turismo 7. Somehow feels better seeing it in real life 😂
Kudos for the owner take the car out for a lap ( and come back safely). This might not be the best gearshift ever, but at least he is driving within his own capacity instead of doing something he is not capable of / unfamiliar with and either grenade the engine or end up in the barrier. Driving this car relative fast on the nordschleife is an achievement itself.
As for me.... I can't even properly rev-match the F1 GTR in Assetto Corsa.😅
Scary slow shifts

Hope you’re recovery is going well !!
There's no quick shifting in this car. Gearbox is sticky esp between 2nd and 3rd.
Wow, spongebob has a CGT
That V10 tho 🥵
He needs a heavier flywheel to suite his shifting! Or shift twice as fast and it will be smoother; but it takes practice on a car like that or Any car that drops revs like that.
He needs to move his hand and lift clutch faster, human hand can move up to 160km/h. He is just slow
someone once told me the clutch in the carrera gt is very harsh to press, idk if its true but can be the reason
Or shifting with a little blip in between, like on old Lamborghinis... Definitely not the easiest car to drive...

Massive respect to the owner, he did an amazing job for the first time on the ring with this car! Greetings from Vienna
After watching until the end and hearing them talk about the price of a gearbox or a totaled car after a crash caused by a misshift I'm assuming his gear changes were that slow because he was very cautious to catch the right gear.
and ironically his gear changes were doing more harm than good
His gearing was horrible. Even my grandmom is driving a stick better than this dude. Just horrible watching.
@@Daddelcrusher Sure his shifting wasn’t the best, but you need to understand that this clutch/gearbox is incredibly hard to use, even pro racers stall this car the first time they drive it
He wasn't doing the transmission any favors shifting like that.
@@K0well The car revs quickly and has a light flywheel. His shifting looks goofy because he's shifting SO SLOW he's letting the RPMs drop nearly to idle. That's going to do more to harm the clutch and upset the chassis than simply driving it like one normally would on a track at a brisk pace. Has absolutely nothing to do with "pros" stalling from a standstill (also a byproduct of a light clutch).
I don't think I've ever seen such a gulf between somebody's driving ability and shifting ability. This guy clearly knows how to take a corner, yet somehow he doesn't know how to shift smoothly/efficiently (even if his objective was to be delicate with the clutch).
Maybe this is some different approach that is specific to the nature of the car, but I can't come up with a logical explanation.
Also to all the people who are sarcastically saying "everyone in the comments thinks they are an expert race car driver", shifting smoothly is not some special dark art. It's pretty basic. Just about anyone can do a pretty good job with
Hi! I'm pretty sure it's just really hard to be smooth with it because the car does not have a flywheel so the revs drop really fast.
Couldn't agree more. That tempo was probably spot on for a family manual car with 2x flywheels on it lol. But he was able to control cornering speed pretty well and catch slides right on time. That was just like two persons trying to drive one car. I can only guess that he was driving supercars with autos all the time, but barely learned how to shift properly. And probably learned the cornering in sims.
@@lucasm7793 If it has a light flywheel you need to shift faster not slower, otherwise the clutch has to do more work in matching the speeds.
Maybe he wanted to avoid money shifting so taking his time to shift?
@@shutianwu5295 That was the uncanny thing... he was very respectful of other drivers knew his way around and caught slides very well with orinal carrera tires better than I could ever do on a sim but his shifting... no comment lol

Fantastic! Seemingly effortless speed.
That dude owns a cgt. I don’t. But I would blip it when shifting so slowly. Was he saving the clutch? So many questions Misha
Do you have $25.000+ dollars for a new clutch? I would baby that clutch also.
@@MrGrazzhoppa clearly you do if you own a careers GT lmfao
@@MrGrazzhoppa I don't think you or the owner realizes that his lackadaisical shifting was actually causing more wear to the clutch than if he'd been shifting it faster and not allowing the revs to drop between shifts. The thing that wears/destroys clutches is a difference in speed that the friction material and flywheel have to generate heat to equalize, and allowing that slip to occur over a long duration. Every time the revs dropped, the engine was at a lower speed than the transmission, then he lets the clutch back out and wear occurs as the transmission brings the engine back up to the same speed. Every. Single. Shift. And even worse on downshifts because the difference in speed between engine and transmission input shaft is that much greater.
In a car like this, one needs to preload the shifter and execute the shift by swift clutch motion. Obviously it is a much more delicate operation than it would be in most other manual vehicles, but the principal is the same; minimize the difference in speed by executing the shift quickly so the engine doesn't have a chance to drop below the speed of the transmission's input shaft in the next gear, and don't allow the clutch to slip (which is far easier given this engine's relative lack of inertia). If done correctly and at the right speed for the vehicle in question, by the time the clutch is let back out following a shift, the engine will have dropped to the exact same speed as the transmission in the next gear, and there will be zero rotational speed difference, and thus no wear.
Unfortunately for him, driving it the way he was is going to cost him more, sooner, which is sad because it is (relatively) easily avoided with proper technique.
Is there a reason why he is changing the gears so slow? Wouldnt it be better to shift fast, in order to match the revs?
It’s an drivers error, you are right. At no point in the lap he tries to match revs when shifting, his downshifts are even more scarier. You can see how much his shifts unsettle the car by the camera shakes.
@@Kipsell but on the upshifts, he tries to rev-match, so he must also be aware of the problem at the downshifts, since he seems to know how to shift in theory - but why is he not doing it then?
What an amazing car, just the sounds and looks are amazing.

Rev matching any car is not easy. You can watch him try around 3:40
