    I think we've all seen some horrendous "Farmer's Welds" over the years, but Tom's welding prowess with his fancy Lincoln welder can't be questioned... Top shelf welting from Tom, and he's so proud of his fabrications that he welds his name onto the beams as well as placing his initials in his concrete pours... :)

    Morning Tom, I'm catching up on your videos
    Your introduction to this video, you expressed your surprise at the youtube viewing figures, as an avid youtube watcher, Gemma Warren, Olly Blogs, Charlotte Ashley, Joe Seels, Tom Pemberton, Richard Wright, Only Farms, Sisters in Wellies, Berkshire Farm Girl, Digger Girl, Flat Out Flat Broke, amongst my favourites, it doesn't surprise me your videos are popular
    Firstly good or bad it makes the cut
    Farming or engineering it's about what YOU do
    The variety of tasks you do, you film and in turn share, but more importantly your videos entertain and educate
    You take the time to explain the processes not just the stages, which to be honest is why I enjoy your wife's videos too, I hope she won't be offended by my commenting again, that I love her "farming for dummies" explanations
    You two make a great youtube team, conversing with other professionals and us non farmers alike
    Keep up the fabulous videos
    Take care
    Geoff

    Lovely work Tom! If you will forgive me, a small bit of advice. When you knock something with your hand, use the edge of your fist and not the palm of your hand (like you at 14:16). All the nerves for your hand run in your palm and they damage easily. You will get the shakes quickly if you keep on using your palm. x

    The comment about mag drills is so true. Even if you need to weld or clamp abit of plate to the job so the drill will stick. Amazing tools so easy to drill big holes. Can’t say I am a fan of only welding one side of the Perlin supports, you can easy peal abit of timber off

    Nice welds Tom. flat and even, and you can see that they have good penetration. The plates you welded to the RSJs towards the end of the video that you only welded one side. Do they support wood or steel beams? If wood, it would be super easy to sand a chamfer to clear the bead if you had welded both sides. I would worry about that joint if the bead is going to be on the under side of the bracket because there is no triangulation of the joint, and the bead can hinge down. If the beam those plates support is nice and tight to the uprights, then those joints will have a shear force rather than the more worrying bending force of course. You have always impressed with your engineering skills, so I know you have it handled.

    • @dfross87
      @dfross87 9 місяців тому

      Those plates are to attach the purlins to the roof beams. The timber will be on the uphill side of the plate, with a bolt through the hole to hold it in place.
      As the slope of the roof is only 10°, the plates and timber purlins will only be off vertical by that 10°, and then the roof sheets will brace all the purlins together once they're attached.
      So while you're perfectly correct about how Tom could weld both sides of the plate and still fit the timber nice and tight, it's not necessary in this instance.
