    The REV 2 is a great Synthesizer, which has everything you need to experiment in making Sound and for Music Creation.
    So, I get asked the same sort of question over and over, which is "This Synth vs That Synth vs That one". Now I decided to a Sound designers Review of 10 Synths that I have made Banks of Patches for and come up with 5 areas to go over and to to give them a score out of 20, for a final total.
    These are:
    Features - 17
    Workflow - 16
    Sound Design - 16
    Versatility - 16
    Value For money - 15
    Sequential Prophet REV 2 gets - 80/100

    Wonderful video! Also, I must add that because there are 4 x 16 different LFO's contained in the architecture of the synth, you can modulate the LFO rate based on what key you are hitting. This is hugely powerful for sound design, often emulating the cross mod ability of the OB-6 and Prophet-6.

    Great review as usual mate. I think the Rev2 would be the last synth I'd sell if I had to sell any of them :-) Agree about the screen, I'm 57 so require reading glasses to view the screen for any length of time. It's not easy or comfortable when you've got headphones on as well. I tend to buy the cheap ready readers from either Tesco or Home Bargains because they can break due to the headphones pressing against them!

    You say you don't like sequencer and prefer to just record and play. Fair enough, but perhaps you should reconsider about the gated sequencer which is not really about playing back pre-configured notes but about automating pretty much any parameter on the synth over time (either autonomously, or advancing a step per key press). It's an entire toolbox of its own when it comes to sound design, providing the option to create weird shapes the envelopes can't provide you with.

    I'm surprised by the fact that you rate this much higher than the Prophet 12. I had the REV2 (desktop 8 voice) for a while, and I think it sounded very good, it seems like it's not quite as interesting as the Prophet 12 (as a huge modulating monster with FM synthesis etc).
    I own the Prophet 10 REV4 (as I think you do too, correct?) and have really been gassing for a Prophet 12, but I'm curious about your thoughts on the 3 of them - more specifically, how the REV2 seems to be the better synth. The numbers say a little bit in your spreadsheet... but I remember thinking the filters on the REV2 (which are the same on the P12) were just not quite as interesting as on my Matrix 1000 (which is similar, but older).
    Where does the REV2 best the P12, and do you feel either have a place next to the REV4?

    17:10 I've got a Prophet '08, and I've found that in the mod matrix I can set the source to keyboard, the destination to OSC1 frequency, the amount to 1 I can then fine detune OSC1 to -30 I get that sweeping sound that sort of emulates the function of the older synthesizers that have variation in the oscillator tuning with respect to the keyboard. I'm certain that the updated slop parameter can give the same thing on the REV2, but it is interesting to play around with the harmonics creating that sweeping sound in a random way! The horn sound I used in my track "Wasteland" is a good indication: ua-cam.com/video/JUI3KhZw87A/v-deo.html

    Question for you - I know its all personal. ive found space for another "shelf" - and Im going to add a Roland TR8s as I dont have any rhythm stuff - but I have space next to it for a synth module. I dont have any fully analogue synths (Peak being the closest) an Im really struggling with which way to go. Deep Mind 12, Rev 2 - both DCO, or OB6/P6 (probably OB) for VCO but more limiting elsewhere..... Any thoughts here would be greatly appreciated.

    • @paulmapp8306

      @@GEOSynths yeh - I think thats first up. I have 120cm of shelf space available for new stuff. The DM12 and OB6 will both fit -= along with a Digitakt. Need some neat Midi switching to do all that - but the Motu Midi Express XT looks perfect. Again not cheap - nearly as much as the DM lol - but it will do the job very nicely. Can then sequence all 4 synth modules plus both keyboards if i wish - and the Digitakt has some synth capabilities itself. The only things putting me of the DM are the limited Oscilator section (though there seems to be more there than you think) and the fact its DCO not VCO. For some reason that wont shift out of my brain. Ultimately if I get both.... Ill have a VCO in the OB6, a DCO in the DM, a hybrid in Peak, and a VA in the Virus (iridium eventually). Add the Fantom as a controller with its own VS synth stuff - its a nice "complete" setup (if anything else is complete lol). The control Sequencer in the DM is a big pull......

    I really want to buy this synth, only thing that's stopping me is that i'm not sure what really is the difference in sound between the 8 voices and the 16 voices. I really like the crisp sound it makes, especially for pads etc. does it really make a difference to have the 16 voices? i'm afraid that the 16 voices could be even too much, and i read a comment about how it is so much sound it is difficult to make it sit in a mix (i would use it mainly with a band). if in order to mix it properly i should cut half of its frequencies off, is it really worth it to buy the 16 voices instead of the 8? given the fact that if I save some money on that i can spend it on another synth that maybe is complementary to the prophet. (and i know that i could buy the 8 voices and then upgrade it if i feel the necessity, but i don't like this option because it would cost it more and i would never make up my mind whether i should upgrade or not). sorry for the long-winded question, i really want this but i want to ponder on it before making a mistake

    • @GEOSynths
      @GEOSynths  5 років тому +1

      Ferran Gonzalez yes, I’m not tied to any manufacturer, so can be honest. I think everyone who is into Synths should have a DeepMind 12, it’s such a great synth, I bought it when it first came out so cost me just over £1,000 but I still think that was worth it. The REV 2 is very powerful, especially with layering and has more options in the oscillator sections and 2 sequencers. It would be between those 2.

    Hi Jamie and thanks for the great review. How much do you miss the Poly Mod that the Prophet 6 and Prophet Five have, or do you find that you can get into similar sonic territory using the LFOs, wave shaping, audio mod etc.?

    • @GEOSynths
      @GEOSynths  3 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for the question, it's a good one. Modulation on the REV 2 is more predicatble and more controllable, the Poly Mod has slightly unpredictable results which is sometimes good, sometimes not. You can't modulare an Oscillator to another on the REV 2, so are limited by the LFO Rates or other Mod Source, but they each have their strengths.

    • @CB-zu4md
      @CB-zu4md 3 роки тому

      Thanks for these useful comments. I ask as I have a Super Six and OB-6 and with both of them, using oscillators (i.e. key scaled audio rate modulation) to modulate the filter or other oscillators, and dialling in the modulation tuning and amount, is always a surefire way to create harmonically complex and beautiful timbres without a whole lot of extra programming. Am on the fence between a Rev 2 or System 8, or even a Jupiter X as my “final” synth (some hope!) - any advice very welcome.

    I'm a big fan of Dave Smith. I still have my original Prophet 5 Rev 3.2 that I bought brand new in 1981. It still works! I only had it serviced once. I had new KB bushings installed (over the years I wore them out), replaced some front panel switches, and had it calibrated.
    I don't care for the Prophet Rev 2. I did play one a friend of min bought. I found it weak and the filter was pretty tame. At $1499 for the 8 voice and $1999 for the 16 voice, its really not a good deal. If I was going to spend $1999 I would buy a Novation Peak. That is a 3 osc per voice synth, 16 voice synth. It has a robust analog filter, excellent FX, and a lot of sound shaping options. 4 LFO's far starters. Yes, it has digital Osc, but they are WAY over Clocked, they sound great. It can be had for $1999 or less, depending on where You buy it. Its a better value for the money.

      I paid $3200 plus sales tax, which was a fortune back then. That said, A Novation's Summit at $1999 is a 16 voice synth that is a lot more capable than the Rev 2. The Rev 2 has wimpy Osc's and an unimpressive Filter. I'll pass.

      You are correct. Apparently, there was so much demand for pre-orders, the MAP was raised. However, I am sure it can be had for less than $1999. Check Thomann Music. Novation has been making and selling quality equipment. Yes, their gear is made in Asia, so are MOST KB's and other equipment. See for yourself. Players that bought the Novation Peak ALL report the build quality is excellent. Also check the qualify of Behringer equipment. NOT made in the US. Unfortunately, most mfg is not American made.

      They're all good actually. I think the basic sound is better on the PEAK and the DM12 with the PEAK being able to make some really complex Soundscapes. The DM12 is fantastic at Pads and the FX really help with it. The REV 2 can make complex Patches and out of the 3 has the benefit of having 2 Layers, so you can have a Pad with an Arp going over the top. If I had one to choose, it would be the PEAK.

    Seems as though I'm in a similar boat as people in the comment section here: Peak Vs. Rev2
    I'd say to my ears, the win goes to Rev2 for analog, Juno-esque sounding character. Specially in the stereo field. The common point I hear for Peak is it's more capable for sound design from a matrix and waveshape perspective. It's not like the Rev2 is handicapped in modulation department but i do see that. If you already have an FM synth or other wavetable based software, you won't really need those wavetables enough to justice my next point here. I would choose a more vintage sound if that is what seems to be missing in your arsenal over a Peak if i'm hard-pressed

    keep watching your reviews - and its not helping lol. I have space for 2 synth modules in my live setup covering 70s/80s/90s stuff. I have a Peak and a Virus Ti2 - but seriously thinking of moving the peak and adding a Dsi.... But Rev2/P6/OB6........ I cant decide if its a good idea, and if so which suits my needs better lol.

      ha...The P6 would be a great module in terms of sound, but as it has no screen, it could cause you to play the wrong patch Live...you don't want to be doing what you think is a searing Saw Lead and get a Bell or something, same with the OB6...though I love these Synths in terms of the sound they make. The REV 2 will be good as you can stack or split or use 2 different sounds over 2 keyboards live, though the sound sometimes divided people. What is wrong with the PEAK, I have one and think it's great?

      @@GEOSynths Nothing is wrong with peak - it was the first proper synth I bought (at 50..... when I switched from guitar as my prime instrument). I have one of your packs and use its sounds often as starting points, or learning from. I cant shake 2 things though. Neither Peak or Ti2 have programmable arps or step sequencers. Neither are proper analogue (VCO/DCO Im not too bothered). The Peak does tend to sound a little too "modern" for the 80s/90s thing. Im probably just getting Gas for a Dsi during lockdown.....

      @@paulmapp8306 haha...nothing wrong with a bit of GAS...The last Bank I did for the REV 2, I made all the patches using both Layers for either Stacked or Split sounds. It actually has 2 Sequencers on it, the usual Step and then a more simpl Poly Sequencer, soif that's your thing, i'd say the REV 2 would be the right choice.

      @@GEOSynths Thanks - your probably right. Once I get a bigger room (Im in about 2 meters by 4m - and have my work PC and my guitar ig in there as well - hence no space bar the top tier of my stand) when I can get rid of the keds..... Ill pick up an OB6 (REALLY want one of those just because) and probably a Moog of some sort just for home use. If I switch to REV 2 from Peak (the 2 were the ones I initially chose between - price swung it as I got Peak for a steal on sale) Ill probably pick another one up at that point as well. Seriously havent touched guitar in about 12 months (and I have a lot tied up in guitar gear). Ill keep tuning into your live streams as well when I can - really enjoy those.

    Good review. Thanks Jamie. I must say that your REV2 seems more consistent than mine (especially with the waveform shapes between voices). Even after complete calibration, done with a fully warm-up machine, there is considerable variations of the PW between voices on mine in extreme settings (very narrow pulse). Also the 12 db/oct filter mode on the REV2 is rather disappointing, with rather weak resonance. The display is ridiculously small indeed. The effects section is also pretty weak. I'm surprised that it stil is present in my current setup. It'll probably be replaced as soon as the Behringer UB-Xa comes along...

      I wouldn't have thought they would be that different, do you have the latest Firmware from them, it's Version 1.1.5.9. Yeah, it's still the same Filter as the 08 pretty much, but the added features of the Oscillator section can help out the tone a bit.

      Wait... Are there REV2s that don’t show this behaviour regarding the PW?

      @@dominicstocker5144
      I believe that the Pulse Width adjustment on the DSI120 chip used in the Prophet 08 and Prophet REV2 is analog. Meaning that it is an analog control voltage which sets the PW ratio. Of course, the P08 and REV2 are calculating this voltage digitally before converting it into an analog voltage (via a DAC). So, the internal temperature, and components tolerances will affect the precision of this control. Hence the need to make sure that the synth is warm-up and then fully calibrate it (by accessing the Globals menu and calling the automatic calibration routine). But even then, there might be some very slight residual variations from voice to voice, and from one machine to another. This is the nature of analog control voltage design.
      As I stated in my initial comment, the variations that I observed, relative to Jamie's REV2, are very slight and only apparent on very narrow PW. Probably due to manufacturing differences, and electronic components tolerances. In everyday use, you'd be hard pressed to notice them.

      It seems that I've had to clear the Calibration Table in order to get uniform performance from all 16 voices. (thanks to Sequential support for pointing that out to me). So now my REV2 is very close to yours.

      @@AlainHubert Thank you for your elaborate answer. I've read on forums that a certain number of voices has a certain PW compared to the others, wich makes it quite predictable. But I keep asking myself if you can fix this via OS updates.

    Would it be silly and pointless for me to buy this if I already have a Peak?

    • @GEOSynths
      @GEOSynths  3 роки тому

      It's never silly buying a new Synth :) That said, based upon sound alone, the PEAK (to my Ears) is a much more versatile Synth and can do sounds the Rev 2 can't.
      The REV 2 is a good Synth though in its own right with lots of Synthesis under the hood, however it is essentially a Prophet 08 with a few new features, but the core sound is still the same.
      You could always upgrade to a Summit, that has the added Filtering features, i've actually done 64 Dual Layer Patches for it, Novation haven't released them yet. Did you try my small Bank I did for the PEAK? It's in Components.

      @@GEOSynths Yea I originally chose the Peak over the Rev 2 and others. A Rev 2 has popped up for 1k near me so it's very tempting haha. I like the idea of having a standalone synth I can mess with and maybe record to cassette tape outside my studio for some ambient stuff. I haven't checked out your bank, but I will do. I have been enjoying making my own presets on the Peak and using them in my tracks, it's a pleasure to work with.
