DAVE SMITH INSTRUMENTS REV2 SYNTH DEMO
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- Dave Smith Instruments (DSI) Prophet Rev2 demo featuring presets (pads, leads, basses, etc). This is DSI's newest analog synth which is an upgrade of their Prophet 08 synth. It includes new features like polyphonic sequencing, waveshape modulation, a new effects section and more. No other effects or processing was done, the sound was recorded straight from the synthesizer. Recorded at the DSI office showroom in San Francisco, CA.

I like synth demos when someone can actually PLAY and demonstrate musical ideas. Well done.
Thanks!
yer man you done well, you play to the sound not the other way round if you get me .
i know I am kinda off topic but does anyone know a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Santiago Parker thanks, I went there and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !
@Zavier Arthur you are welcome :D
If I owned this I would just play that 1:18 patch until my neighbor smelled something in my apartment
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well..
Is it a preset?
Very very nice.
Such a beautiful synth. Bought it last week. It's my first one. I am in love.
Your playing brought each patch to life perfectly! Each sketch you played was as varied as the preset and sounded amazing. I wish I could get you to demo every synth I'm interested in before buying.
haha that's very kind, thanks!
Wow. This is beautiful. Every single patch, and these were just presets? I can't wait to see more of this.
Yup just presets. I much preferred the presets on this vs the P08, they are all very inspiring and musical. Of course I skipped quite a few while making this demo, I prefer the more organic softer sounds so this demo is definitely biased towards my tastes :)
since you have specified that you like softer, deeper sounding presets, which synth is the best for live playing according to your experience?
i have my eyes on korg ms2000 or the new roland se-02
@@onceuponasynth 9
ive been waiting for a good demo of this synth since it was announced. It sounds so good!
4:56 is so beautiful. Wow. Such a great sound, I had to sit up from my chair and shout yes! multiple times.
That moment when google tells you that mark mothersbaugh from devo wrote the music for rugrats.
Nice synth
. So 1000 more for the ob6 or this Catchy and crisp machine. Aaarghh. 1st world problem :/
Sebastian Beyer or just get the peak for even less
@@user-th6rh8zp3t The Peak is, IMO, a more expensive option since it doesn't come with a keyboard, sequencer and multi timbrality to name a few....
7:06
:)
longbeachproductions that’s the Rugrats theme right?
Great video. Enjoy your playing and exhibiting the quality of the synths sounds.
So far this is the best demo of the rev 2 that I've heard because it shows the versatility of this instrument and how can that be applied to different types of music
My thoughts exactly!
I bought. A grandmother last year but have been disappointed in not having basic presets to work from so I got a rev 2 and I love it. Would I be happier with a Moog subsequent than the to have moog sound w presets. I have enjoyed your channel it’s great
Thanks SO much for showing a different side to this synth. Even though they are presets, no other videos are showing the softer more mellow patches. I'm thinking of picking up a Rev2.
Loving the Rugrats at 7:06!
hehe, it's the first thing that came to mind when I auditioned that preset.
Thank you so much for the demo!
You're welcome.
Great demo! Cool synth, but definitly not what I am looking for, though. Thanks for making that clear.
is there different version because there is written sequential and not dave smith instrument like yours?
I love this, man. I never commented back when I was shopping for a synth, but this vid and your playing definitely helped me go through with buying it. I'm so glad I bought it. It's a great synthesizer.
I have doubts on the Rev2 vs the P6 due to certain demos, but your video actually makes me go "hey this sounds really gorgeous"
sure the Rev2 doesn't have VCO. however it has split/stack, 16 voices, 4 LFOs and the list goes on :)
I wouldn't put them against one another, but rather, would they compliment one another? I think they sound quite different personally. Love them both!
Love your demo, thanks bro! 👌
6:00 does it for me, very rich and filling. Sounds like an orchestra instead one one instrument
What speakers/ monitors are you playing through?
one of the best demo videos yet! amazing playing skills. working on trading up my mopho x4 for this.
What I loved is the way it can "sound like" other instruments. Electric pianos, Clavs, strings , organs a like. A really proper synth.
lol i was just like, 'i wonder if that demo is up yet?' whudda ya know.
rofl, rugrats theme was a nice touch
😂
New to Synths - looking at Rev 2 and P 12. aside from the sequencer, what can one do the other can't? (In layman's terms if possible) I don't need effects so much as a guitar player I have quality Strymon and a few other pedals. i would use a synth to create sounds, maybe use as a backing track and if I become semi-proficient create tunes. I do like the idea of stacking to create great depth to sound. I also have seen the P12 arpeggiator can be used to do sequencing with some knob twisting. Also what about the OB6? If this sounds confused it's only because I am.
Jack Sprat well, first....the Rev2 vs P12
The Rev2 is all analog, the P12 has digital oscillators with analog filters. Both have extremely deep modulation capabilities (lots of LFOs and envelopes). Mostly its down to the Rev2 sounding more classic, while the P12 can sound very modern.
OB6 has VCOs instead of DCOs, like the Rev2. Its just a different type of analog oscillator sound source. The OB6 lacks almost all of the modulation ability of the Rev2. It does not have a 4-pole low pass filter, but its 2-pole filter is state-variable, meaning it can be 2-pole LPF, band pass, band-reject, or a combination. Kind of it’s main selling point. Its a rare thing in analog polys.
Since you’re new to synths, I would go with something very straightforward. Any of the three you listed will do. Also the Korg Prologue is very simple, probably even more so than the one’s you listed. Either way, you’re going to need some time to learn you’re way around. The Rev2 is my favorite synth to program ever. The UI is so intuitive, it just makes sense. I rarely need to manual.
@@Deeplycloseted435 - Thanks for the reply. I'm going to have to take a 150 mile trip to actually put hands on these. I think the OB - 6 is out. Maybe I should just get a Volca or three and go wild! Ha!
They should have sent me one to program :).
GEOSynths I have noticed that about Dave Smith Synths----have never been impressed with the initial programs. They also appear to be very arrogant about their products. They tell me Dave Smith was the father of midi and yet I always have problems with their midi implementation and they insist I need to use a computer as an interface to other instruments. No longer buy DS.
I'll keep my eye out for a GeoSynths demo of the Rev2
I'm actually surprised they didn't ask Allan Howarth to do some Carpenter style patches on the Prophet 6 for the Halloween season.
haha, love that rugrats theme there :)
what a great sounding synth and demo!
;) Thanks!
For the first time I see and hear a demo from someone who can play, this time no octave left hand for a minimum of 4 seconds per octave note and campfire chords c/am/f/g on the right but classically trained. You can time well with accents for the beat (5:49). Because of your way of playing (staccato in the low end) I now hear the filters well (whether they are steep enough). Thank you!
Do you think it's worth having this synth as well as the Prophet 6? It's got so much more modulation and more oscillators for half the money and they can sound pretty similar.
Fantastic demo! Your imaginative style and sounds remind me of Luna Set (ua-cam.com/video/XPLrB6eCHgo/v-deo.html), although I think they used a Jupiter 8 or an Oberheim in the early '80s.
That's a nice sounding Deepmind 12 clone.
(I keed, I keed)
lol
lol, too soon
Do we need to build a border wall and put you on the other side? Because that's how you get on the other side of a border wall.
deroden do you think this or the deep mind 12 is better?
Did you really just ask that question? Please tell me that was a joke...
Is this the 8 or 16 voice?
I honestly don't know, that's a good question, I should have asked.
It's 8 voice
I would have thought they'd have the 16 voice on show at the DSI HQ in San Francisco...
Tommie Garrett how do you know?
That preset at 6:48 is exceptionally nice. Thank you, this was the best demo for this synth so far.
I think this will be my first polysynth, I hope I can buy it before fall.
It reminds me of a younger Depeche Mode, thank you :)
Always the best synth demos. Think I watched your Korg MonoPoly tutorial more than any other youtube video.
Have you done a walk through of the Prophet 8 or Rev 2?
I'm hearing a lot of stereo panning, sounds like it's modulating somehow. Is that the cause of one of the onboard effects? Based on the pictures it doesn't look like there are any knobs for stereo effects (my first guess was that LFO was modulating the pan).
Yeah the rev2 has "pan" as a possible modulation destination so it could be that. Or perhaps it could be some of the effects too. I'm not quite sure to be honest, I didn't really have time to dig into the patches.
I really can't wait to get this synth! Thanks Dave!
You're welcome! Oh wait, I'm not Dave.
once upon a synth apologies! Thank you for confirming I need this puppy in my life. great/thoughtful playing also love the rev2 p6 demo!
Fuck. I can only afford the Deepmind 12 but really I want this. . .
What is the outro song? Is it an original composition?
Anyone know what song is being played at 05:26?
Is this the 8 or 16 voice? Thanks for the demo
I don't know sorry, I forgot to ask them.
7:07 Welcome to Fantasy Island!
I was watching your tour thinking......I wish he played the Rev2.........then.. JACKPOT! Thanks for this. I've preordered and am waiting to get my hands on it!
Awesome, enjoy it!
Please tell me what patch you are using (plucky bass sound) at 7:40 - I have the desktop 16 voice version.
I honestly can't remember sorry! I don't own this synth, this was a demo I made while visiting the DSI offices a couple of years ago.
is this 8 or 16 voice version?
Very nice demonstration! I have the option for a very nice Korg Polysix for nearly the same price than this one. It’s such a hard decision - which one would you choose?
4:54 - I think the Rev2 will be able to recreate my favorite Poly Evolver patch (#27 Popcorgan)... Based on what I've read, the voice architecture in the Rev2 allows for similar stereo spread and pan modulation.
He said, “Respect the Rugrats” at 7:06
for nices pads, what would you choose between the Prophet rev 2 and the deepmind 12?
For Pads, Ambient and Soundscapes prob the Deepmind 12, those things are it`s strongest point. Bought the Deepmind 12D the other day after considering a Rev 2 and think that I made the right choice and I already have a DSI Tetra so I have a 1st hand idea of what a Rev2 is kind of like, the Deepmind is a lot less money as well so result for me methinks
well the osc of the REV2 are more suited for pads: the second osc offer the same waveforms than osc 1, and you can modulate waveshape of each oscillator, kind of PWM with saw , triangle, and saw+triangle, in addition of the PW for the pulse wave. You have 4 LFO for animating your sound in all directions, including the waveshape of the osc. You can animate witht hte LFO the 2 waveshapes, the filter and add vibrato to the pitch, at the same time for a nice, living and evolving pad, for exemple. You can do the same with a DM.
If you want a classic sound with 2 sawtooths with the DM you need to stack 2 voices , lowering the polyphony to 6 for the DM 12 ... Then in fact a REV2 8 voices will have more voices than a DM 12 in this case.
You can do almost (or all) all what does a DM with a REV2, in term of synthesis, but the the DM is more limited than the REV2.
Morgan Billon this should tell you :
ua-cam.com/video/HnqwH3Raa1Y/v-deo.html
is it 8 voices?
what's the song @ 11:42? great demo btw!
Thanks! That was just some random improv.
Hi, is there any difference between Dave Smith Rev2 and the one with “sequential” name on the right hand side ?
No, it's the same Synth. Dave Smith went failure in 1987 and Yamaha bought it. but then, he gained it back in 2018 and changed from DSI to Sequential.
How would you rate it against the prophet 6?
love the John Carpenter style movie music @ 10.33 is the arpeggio programmable with patterns (mono & poly patterns), or is that a custom pre recorded sequence?...sounds very cool, these kind of things make me want a synth like this...and i like the way it shows of that it has soft timbres as well, other than the typical brassy sawtooth wave ones, that can be heard on other demo's.
sounds a bit like the Pro2 i think, like the sound anyway better then the OB6-which was not at all to my taste.
Isnt keybed like noisey?
How is the Keybed? I’m seriously contemplating getting one but don’t have a location I can try one at near me. As a piano/synth player how would you rate your enjoyment while playing it?
The keybed feels great. DSI synths have really nice keyboard action, so I wouldn't worry about that. The voyager and prophet 08 have some of the best synth keyboards in my opinion, and the Rev2 is very similar. But of course, keyboard action is very subjective, so YMMV :)
Vs the DeepMind 12 how do they compare?
Great demo. Thank You! Now do a Peak demo.
Thanks, will do!
Hello!Great demo!Is this a difficult synth to use if u dont have deep knowledje in synthesis?
What are you playing at 12:10?
Sounds really great.
Possibly, just possibly a variation on Hotel California?
You made the last two patches sound amazing. All of them are nice, but the last two are my favourites.
PS: Nice color grading this time :)
Thanks, yeah I tried to saturate the colors a little more and add a bit more contrast.
is the sound at 5 mins a standard factory sound? love it.
Yup, all the sounds I played were factory presets. But I should mention this was a beta unit before the Rev2 was officially released, so it's possible that some of these presets didn't make it into the final synth.
Coolness. Thanks.
incredible synth, not feeling confident enough to buy one with all the issues ive heard about and people getting returns on them due to tuning instabilities and other things breaking down on it
I think they fixed the tuning issue but also I’ve heard Dave smith has incredible customer service
Honestly the patches in the first half of this video made me cringe - too brittle and scratchy. But moving into the 2nd half... now that's a Prophet. :) And the basses are surprisingly good, I think better than the P8.
Different strokes, different folks, I guess
For anybody who mount their synths on a top shelf like this, isn’t it uncomfortable because you have to stand up when playing ?
you might be the only person to have played both the rev2 and the Deepmind 12 so I have to ask, how do they compare? I'm torn right now. Is the rev2 (8 voice) worth the extra $$?
I get asked this question a lot. I haven't spent nearly as much time with the Rev2 as with the DM12 so I can't give a fair judgement. They both sound good and both have pros and cons. The DM12 has much more effects. The Rev2 has a better sequencer and more modulation options. The Rev2's keyboard feels a little better to me. I found the Rev2 a little more inspiring to play. As a keyboard player I'd give a slight edge to the Rev2 for playability. But if you judge purely by sound it's a tougher call. Sorry I can't be of more help. Whether the features of the Rev2 are worth the extra money depends on what kind of synthesis you want to do, how much you value built-in effects, note sequencers, how much keyboard feel is important to you, etc. Both are pretty capable synths. If you're unsure I'd wait for the Rev2 to come out so you can play it in person and get a feel for what inspires you most.
Sounds lovely
im glad they didn't go with that 'unfinished' wood look for the cheeks.
Sounds great, thanks for the demo
Thanks.
Ironically this sounds closer to an Oberheim OBXa than the OB6 does due to the Curtis sound. I think it would be a nice companion to the Prophet 6. I'm considering it.
I'll be posting another video with the Rev2 and Prophet 6 playing together soon, stay tuned!
Awesome! Can't wait. I have my opinions on the Rev2 (wishing it could do more than just 2 patches at once) but at it's price it may be the best option to play alongside my Prophet 6 to get those Carpenter Prophet 5/Prophet10 type sounds.
Curious about the sequencer tho. When you hit play do both patches start playing their sequences or is it possible to only have one sequence start playing while you are playing another patch live over top via keybed?
What synths do more than two patches at once?
Off the top of my head Alesis Andromeda and ARP Quadra.
EverettDudgeon138
I'm considering the module myself
Love your synth demo style! You sold me on the Rev2, ordering one up on Sweetwater today!
Does the Slop parameter behave like on the P6? I mean, does it range from "perfectly in tune" to "horribly unstable"? I remember the Mopho's slop being barely noticeable even when at maximum (IIRC the P08 has the same behavior).
Also, does the arpeggiator strictly follow clock or does it reset when you play the first key? The P6 does the latter and it drives me nuts.
Are you saying when synced to a clock, the arp on the P6 will switch notes right when you hit a key instead of waiting for the next clock beat? Wouldn't that kill the rhythm?
Yes, already small values of slop make it easily out of tune.
I'd be really tempted to buy one if it had a panel mode. I can't deal with not seeing position all of the controls are at.
Prophet 12 doesn't, so maybe not. But it might have the typical settings where you have to turn to the right setting before it changes.
Are these the original presets of the keyboard or are they yours?
These were all stock presets.
Awesome, thank you!
I played one of these in Portland at Control Voltage. They're glorious.
does this synth have a lot of evolving pads?
nice it has an organ grinder :P 5:19
Great video, thanks!
Sssssooooo satisfying.
Man do you make this synth sound good!:)
What's better this or Elektron Analog Keys
Personally, they're all good, but my favourite is the Novation Peak.
I had an AK - sounds great, but limited as a poly. Only 4-voice, if you play a triad then the 4-track sequencer is pretty useless. A lot of menu diving. And I love my Analog Rytm and Octatrack, so I don't have an issue with Elektron machines.
I also bought a Rev2 8-voice and just didn't feel like I loved the filters, so I returned it and got the Peak.
Love the Peak. I don't get people who criticise its sound at all. It is amazing.
Loving the sounds at 9:30 and 10:33. Definitely some things I've not heard out of my P'08. Great demo. Thanks for recording and sharing.
Thanks!
is this the 16 voice version?
07:06 Razmoket !
Good demo and playing - not very inspiring patches from DSI, though. They sound like I made them. :).
any surprises?
Where did you learn to play? Do you have a piano background?
Yeah I've been playing piano for a while. Had a couple of lessons back in the day, but mostly self-taught.
Awesome. The set at 1:18 is immaculate
Comfy
tremendous demonstration - well crafted ---- Luckily there are some now available in stock and I am deciding whether to get a 16 or an 8 .............
Thanks! Have fun with the new synth!
You probably already know that but you can just buy an 8 voice one and then get yourself an additional voice card afterwards
RUGRATS
what is this secong pieve you play ?
these were mostly just short improvs
Really nice improvs ill check those cjords later. Bro could I msg with some questions abt synth setup?
Rugrats man!!
excellent, thanks!
Thanks!
Nice demo!! Did I hear rugrats theme song?
Thanks! Yes you did :)
once upon a synth I loved that show!!! ☺️ grew up on all them shows.. I want this synth I think it blows away the deepmind 12 which doesnt have that sound im looking for ..
Great demo!!! Have u played for a long time?
Kind regards
Thanks! Yeah I've been playing for about 15 years, but mainly as a passion/hobby, so I haven't devoted nearly as much practice as I would have liked.
once upon a synth you sure have some skills, so that passion definently shines thru! 👌
Thanks 😁
