There is another efficiency-shaving factor you probably underestimated: Spanish road surfaces. Spanish motorway pavement is very coarse compared to most other European countries and, in my experience, this alone cuts about 10% off your normal gas-mileage. Nice video!
I'm spanish (south) , other important thing to take in consideration is the weather, our south is so hot along the year (summer 40º, winter average 18º) and there's a lot of evaporation inside the tank
Aaaah haven‘t thought about that when travelling to spain (from Germany). I always wondered why my car took 8,5L instead of around 7,9L in France. Both with Cruise Control set at 145kph
My observation, having done this trip a few times: You may have been better leaving the first evening rather than waiting til early morning. I never sleep well the night before a big trip anyway so leaving home at 9pm instead of 5am makes sense. Also means the end of the journey when you are beginning to tire is in daylight and your body clock isn't demanding sleep quite so urgently.
I would say it's better to have any sleep before such a long trip, having sleep depravation issues on the road can be deadly. I've had scenarios with my eyes closing on me during driving, it's a high no no, always sleep before the trip, or else risk your life, especially when you drive alone and your decision making is skewed when very tired.
The only thing about this strategy is would you sleep in the day before setting off? If you set off at night when you naturally want to go to bed, then after two hours you have a break in the tunnel, and possibly a nap, and I wonder if you would be even more tired after? I did a 24h/ 1100m drive from UK to Poland, set of just after lunch, found it to be really good optimum, had a good night sleep and a kip, was rested, and I knew that I will be in my destination after breakfast. I guess each strategy has it's positives and negatives.
2012 530d M Sport, they quote 677 miles for 70 litre tank, and I get over 720 mile range consistently. Apart from front rods, tyres discs and pads and oil, basically nothing has gone wrong with it from new. 164,000 miles so far. Oh, only complaint is cd player doesn’t work and bmw said it needed a whole new infotainment system (£2000+), not particularly bothered, however it did surprise me there was no quick fix. Changed from run flats to cross climate 2’s, better ride and quieter.
My first trip with a BMW it was a 1000 kms trip from the north to the south of Italy. The BMW was a f31 320d and I was amazed by the fuel consumption the sportiness but also the comfort and I was also with people that have a special place in my heart. It was my first trip in a BMW and since this experience I fell in love with the brand and promised myself that one day I will also own my personal BMW, and share it with the people I love the most
@@dzonikg Yeah right, you have a 15 years old small coupe with half a million kms that has its soul burnt, modified and who knows what done to it and you are complaining about comfort??? Try a G11 or at least G30 and then come back and talk about lack of comfort.
I absolutely love trip videos, especially when they have some sort of "goal", this one was excellent and proved that 30d was and it one of the best engines ever made in the history.
Diesals are really good I recently drove from North England to Paris and back in a 2.0l diesal Audi A6. Drove almost 850 miles and when I filled up the computer said I had 25 miles left. I wasn't driving particularly economically was using Air con and cruising between 80-90 mph (well in France anyway UK roads not so much 😅). If I tried I could have got well over 900 miles on a tank. When you consider the BMW is a 3l 6 pot compared to my 2l 4 pot makes it all the more impressive, maybe its because you don't have to work the engine as hard 🤔
What if you drive 60 miles per hour and the 6 pot does that with 1100 revs. The 4 pot needs 1600 revs for 60 miles per hour. What does that say about amount of combustions per revolution and per mile? Not to think about the possibility to disable cylinders on the 6 pot and the 4 pot cannot do that? Yes, a 6 cylinder has more internal moving parts and friction, but it also has more tricks on its sleeve compared to the 4 pot and that's also where you pay extra for.
@@Nollekeuh then again, could it be the 4 pot has only 4 cylinder to feed as opposed to 6? Idk, but I feel like perhaps only when you go over 70 mph, the 6 cylinder truly shines.
We had the 730D and it got more MPG than the 40TDI A6 and 35TFSI A3. Truly remarkable car, much faster, much heavier yet more economical. It averages 10mpg more pretty much and on the motorway it’s even greater. Can’t go wrong with it really.
Bigger block will always do better on highways and hills over large distance, smaller ones are champs in small distance driving. You will get your engine to "working" temp within 10 miles, and 6 cyl 3l will need additional 5 to get to same level of economy if not more. So, if you plan on driving a lot through long distance, go with bigger engine and around city even 2l is too much.
Amazing journey! I own a 328d (320d in Europe) and my mini challenge was to make it from Memphis, Tennessee to Houston , Texas (~600 miles) on one tank (14 gallons) and made it with your same miles left. Was able to do 52 MPG at 80 MPH. Only mod is a RaceChip GTS attached to it.
I live in NC and drove back from Memphis TN in my 16 Honda Odyssey. Set the cruise on 60 the whole way and got 674 to a tank (21gal). Filled up with a gallon left.
@@GGoblin1 oh yeah. Not any more though, BMW NA sadly stopped diesel imports in 2019. (Not good enough sales and shifting focus to electrics and hybrids). Lot of us miss the diesels, even though we only had very few choices. First diesel in the US was the E90 335d and was a big success so they decided to sell the 328d sedan and wagon (same 320d in EU but with a 328i luxury level) thus badged that way. We also had the F15 X5 and the 535d.
Loved my E90 335D engine. Never had it for economy (was tuned to 400bhp/640bhp) but did a comfortable 600 miles across France from the Alps to Brittany without trying too hard. And that was the old generation (2006)
The fact you can buy that for what’s an equivalent $50K AUD blows my mind. A similar spec here would be near double that right now. Great vid and amazing to see you make the distance on just a tank!
I know mate it's a bloody nightmare! We get absolutely screwed in Australia in regards to euro car pricing.. Regardless of the current market they've always been way overpriced compared to the UK.. Desirable Cars that are achievable for the average Joe in the UK are only dream cars for us here. 😢
Well then come to eastern europe. Any country there would do it. Cars cost right about the same as they do in England. Only difference, you would earn maybe the quarter of what you actually earn right now in Australia. For the same job. So dont complain. Its still one of the richest country on the earth
Mate that was just brilliant. So well put together. Interested to know what you decision process was between Speed Limiter and Cruise Control ? Also, did you have the AC on ?
Thanks bro ♥️ Cruise is constantly trying to hold selected speed and doesn't tend to do the efficiently, it will also brake the car on longer downhills, we used the limit as a guage and modulated the throttle ourselves for more efficiency, the limit also allows the car to coast about said limit on longer downhills 👌 We kept AC on as 22 hours in 30+ degrees C would have destroyed us, certainly worth the 1-2% loss in overall range 👊
I am driving a 2011 530d touring and runnning easily 1.000 km with one single tank of almost 70 liter while not driving too slow. Great achievement you did
I remember driving my wife’s company car a BMW 320d efficient dynamic from London to nottingham. I stayed with the lorries at 55mph and did 130 miles @ 82mpg. Still have the trip computer photo to prove it. Amazing economy!!!
I just did the same trip last weekend!! and sat on 57mph behind lorries and did 80mpg! In all honesty I did the same trip before and gunned (blots of 110mph most at 85mph but ended up with 55mpg and only took me 30min less so not worth it
@@PaulTC97 no one said driving between lorries...driving behind one helps with wind resistance. Driving between two lorries feels like a death sentence...
Great journey and provides a better understanding of real world mpg. My only problem is I can’t do that 62mph all that time. Its just not me (to slow) however anything faster would defeat the purpose of saving gas. Great job guys
Yes, I didnt quite get that mpg when I drove from Munich to Oslo in a day (about 1800km) some years back in my 335i. I think I filled up the tank 6 or 7 times.
Its poisoned by the public because its poisening the public. The model 3 performance just did 1000KM in 9:15 hours on Bjorns channel (airco on), averaging 108 KM/h (far faster than the average speed of this Diesel car) and consumed 212KW/h while doing so. Costs via superchargers is roughly 50 euro and had zero nitrogen emmissions. Extrapolated to 110 miles (1770KM) this would be 88 euro and almost 17 hours triptime. This BMW car was slower on average while it weights less than the Model 3, while concuming 73 liters of diesel (costs way more than the 88 euro electricity). Yes you have to stop regularly to charge 10/15 minutes with an EV but i think its safe to say you want to stop 4/5 times anyway during a 22 hour roadtrip. So if you think diesels are a great piece of machinery, what do you think about modern EV's? Mindblowing? Spaceships from another dimention?
Absolutely awesome effort chaps. I recently drove to Tours which you will have passed in my G21 M340D touring and only managed 43mpg (roofbox and 130kph) so for you guys to get 63+ is a great effort.
I was looking for comments on the efficiency for this trip as I own a f30 335d and going 120kph I only get 50 mpg at best so I'm thinking my car may have an issue .
@@callumcurtis15 The 30D unit is a good bit more efficient than the 35D unit. 50 is decent for the F30. I had one for a bit and would get 40-45 at best. I now have a G30 530D and get 60 on runs quite easily
I had a 2012 320d luxury and regret not having that amazing economy. I used to get 53mpg in the city and 76 mpg on a run. Eco mode of course but i had had a remap so was really punchy when i needed it. Fantastic engine.
I went Dover to Calais on Monday 3rd June 2024, turning up at the port at the civilised time of 11am. It was very quiet. Almost straight through passport checks and check-in. Our 2010 330D Coupe Auto wouldn't get anywhere near close to 1100 miles from a tank. Smaller tank and less efficient older tech 6 cylinder BMW diesel engine... These days we prefer to avoid the toll roads. As we tend to be in no hurry, the 330D is a great car for A B and unclassified roads, and the tolls are annoyingly pricey.
Hi Joe, thanks for another great video! I live in Madrid - for a few decades now - (you just about went past my house, 10km north of Plaza Castilla.) I have done that trip many times, well Madrid/Sheffield/Madrid in my case. Just did Madrid/Glasgow/Sheffield/Madrid, to collect our youngest son who just completed his degree at the Uni. of Glasgow and attend my sister´s 3 day birthday celebrations. We went in a 2013 530D x-drive, via Troyes/Charleroi/Rotterdam/Hull/Sheffield/Glasgow route there and back (avoiding Paris and London, now, massive no-go´s for me after having stopped on Christmas runs on various occasions to see lights etc.) On this trip we did a 1-night stop in Blois (beautiful town on the Loire) after 1080 km from home (Alcobendas) but with plenty of time for dinner, then sleep on overnight ferry to Hull. Same routine for return journey. All told I did 5254 km @ 7.5l/100km giving an average speed, over 58.32 hours, (in 8 days mind) of 92.2km/h. This sounds slow but is misleading as when on motorways I certainly crack on. In France, there were times when I would have sworn I had the paparazzi on my tail! The BMW 6 cylinder diesels are marvellous, we have 3. Wife 640d Cab (313hp), son 330d Cab. (231 hp). All great, really quick, really economical. I would, probably, change my "old 5" for a 840d 48V Grand Coupe as my wife sees the 7 as a bit of an "old mans car"! I do like 6 cyl. diesel 7´s tho', then again, I am an old man! (The 1 downer I would have to say owning BM'S is - avoid the run-flats like the plague, they have no give whatsoever, crashing on unseen potholes or sleeping policemen if not going REALLY slow and they don't run flat for more than a (very) few kms. before the tire wall starts to rip apart.) Keep the vids coming Joe!
Great job guys! I hope you enjoyed your trip. This is the only reason why I love this car brand. I own an old 2010 E90 325d with N57 engine and AT transmission and man, I love this car all the way. I've been an owner for 2 years now, and I can't believe how a car with 204HP and 510Nm can be so efficient in terms of fuel consumption. I mainly use the car for work, i.e. I do about 85 km of open road and a bit of highway, normal driving, respecting road restrictions and the car shows that it consumes between 5.6 and 6 liters per 100 km. I'm very satisfied. Once again, great job guys... Cheers
Hey guys, Joe et all. You keep on mentioning weight; however weight is relatively insignificant for fuel efficiency. It has more to do with drag. So a top tip, for your next trip: don’t overtake trucks but keep behind them as long as possible. Saves a lot of fuel.
Really impressive range. I’ve got a G20 320i and managed to average 63.4mpg over a Manchester to Southampton and back trip… was quite amazed to be honest. Fully loaded car with two dogs, suitcases and cruising at 63mph too! 🤯
62mph is such a sweet spot for efficiency and relaxation. You won't create crazy queues and equally won't need to bother with any overtaking manoeuvres 😅😅
Well done Joe / Patrick. I don't know what it is about a range test but it really intrigues me. Very entertaining. What a machine! Keep up the great work.
@@MatthiasKleine the only problem is that you would need to charge every 400 km and the charging costs are now ridiculous at service station as high as 70 cents per KWH
I have something to say. Use that BMW for commuting to work every day for 6 months and see who’s got the most left in their bank at the end. Nobody does 1100 miles in a single journey and nobody that buys electric cars buys one to do these journeys. With the money I used to spend on fuel every month commuting, I could literally save 2 months fuel money and rent a brand new xc90 for a trip like this. For 95% of people, for every day use, commuting, chores etc.. electric cars are better and cheaper.

Nice video. Did a trip in a G30 530d last year (same engine). The thing gave a tank range of 1200 km, which is terrific considering India's traffic situation. Of course, it was remapped, so a little better efficiency than stock.
Brilliant piece all round. Joe, your video production levels have got so excellent. Kudos to you and your team. As for the 7 series, impressive doesn't even begin to describe it. How many stops to recharge an EV taking on this trip would need, I wonder....?
@@ChanahsCreativeEdits use your brain man, holy moly. first of all, you'd need to cash out a lot more than 25k for an EV and there's your savings already for fuel in YEARS. second, do you really think if only like 20% of europe goes to EVs, the price of electricity would be the same ? let alone with a higher number. Best video in a long time Joe. Well done to you both, not an easy trip to make but amazing results. I second that regarding the diesel and the fantastic 30d. For high mileage defo they have their place. Small diesels not so much. Petrols are for fun like your M cars but not much else. Electric for the average person is fine. No one solution fits it all, nor should it. Long live the 30d!!

Loved watching this Joe 👏 I owned a 2017 730 for 3 years and agree it’s a massively underrated vehicle. I have argued with Petrolhead mates that the drivetrain in this car is one of the greatest of all time and been laughed at but I think you just proved my point. I would like to have seen you speak about the car a little bit more so hopefully you make another one in the future. Thanks for sharing it with us.

It felt incredibly well engineered even compared to other models in the BMW range, I would have no qualms about running an older/higher mileage car.
Awesome effort and incredible efficiency. Why did I sell my diesel!?! 😂. That said, no way could I drive that long at 62mph. Would do my head right in. Fair play to you for having the patience.
Not really. At 70mph, 1100 miles would take 15.7 hours, at 60mph it would take around 18.3 hours. 2.5 hours extra over that time... it's almost insignificant!

And if you add battery degradation for such a low range at brand new... cmon man, 500kg of batteries in a single car, it's disgusting.
I used to have an E61 530d msport. Wonderful car. The best I got out of that was 49.5mpg on a leisurely run to the Lake District. It was the last of the 530d upgrades at 235bhp until the next shape came out. The best mpg car I ever had was a Skoda fabia greenline 2. It had a 1.2 ltr three cylinder turbo charged diesel. Generally it would potter around at 80-85mpg but my best effort was a round trip to Oxford. 95mpg average with peak at 99.7mpg. Very economical little car but the five series was a pleasure to drive. Whole family have gone electric now (apart from my motorbikes where my passion now sits) and I’d never go back to the impractical nature of an ICE car. Stopping to fill up regularly, hot in the summer, cold in the winter, slow to accelerate and expensive to run. Even long road trips are not too bad, stopping every 230 miles for thirty minutes or so and that is after a far faster average cruise speed. That seven series was impressive though. I was expecting a far bigger tank volume when it got filled up.
Loved the piece shows what a fantastic car the 7 series is, I have been looking at the 7 series as my next vehicle as I currently have a 5 series. What’s more remarkable is you only paid just over £25,000 which has to be the bargain of the century.
They drop in price quite massively which makes them bargain cars as workmanship is top notch and I doubt anyone gets any problems with them. My loaded 66 plate 740xd g12 is worth 30k (hasn’t dropped in price over 2 years).
German carts depreciate ridiculously fast due to the expensive maintenance and the fact most of them were abused as lease cars for their first 3 years.
Epic journey and what a machine. You should do an edinburgh and back with one of you in that and the other in an x5 with same engine to highlight cost/mpg difference
I'd love to see the same run again (or even on the way back?) driving the speed limit, stuff cruise control on (as most would do. 62 mph is way too slow I'd say) Great video though.
Absolutely brilliant vid Joe, I really enjoyed it. So different from your usual stuff and a great achievement- well done! Just proves how efficient a big diesel can be, there’ll be a queue of people wanting to buy this car now! Aside of air quality around the vehicle, I can’t believe a big heavy EV is cleaner overall than this thing..
Amazing achievement Joe, so impressive on so many fronts, congratulations! Would be nice to know a few details like what you had your eco pro individual settings on, did you have Aircon the whole way, any tips for driving like you did and getting such amazing mpg figures out of the car etc.
Firstly, amazing video! Secondly, could you do some similar tests with a "normal" cruising speed of this car, so lets say 130-140km/h? How much would the range change?
A great achievement, well done chaps! Testament to the car but also restraint of the drivers. Makes such a difference to efficiency when driving at a slower speed on the Motorway /Autoroute. Perfect car to waft the miles away.
100% with you. Take a diesel, add a big tank of fuel and off you go. Not surprised with the economy. I have a 2019 E220d and get 55 mpg at 75 mph. Have easily achieved 67mpg in the Netherlands when struck at 100 kph limit on their motorways. I don’t object to an electric car but it’s got to be able to do a decent long drive in one day before i even think about changing. To me that’s 4 hrs +, 20 min rest and another 4 hrs (500 miles with only as 20 min charge top up). Great video 👌👌
Probably a deficit of 10% or so. It’ll still happily do 55-60 mpg. Which is still insane considering weight and engine size and power. It’s got a 78 litre fuel tank so range will always be good
B57O is great! In the end, how many miles did you cover according to the car vs map? Did the Shell diesel come with or without bio-replacement? What tyre pressure did you have? Please increase pressure to maximum rated on tyre sidewall (probably around 3.5 bar). Going the oppsite direction (i.e. home) may provide even more efficient (drop in inclination). Please also try fewer stops, lower crusing speed, no AC and if possible covered wheels. Looking forward to the result!
I just did a 8000km road trip across Europe in 2012 520d and consumption was 5.3 l/100km (driving 130 - 150 km/h most of the time) interesting that its the same weight as this car, bmw did some weight reduction exercise in g11 and g30
We used the speed limiter rather than cruise control. Meant we couldn’t go over 60mph but cruise didn’t hamper us from carefully slowing down if needed
You remind me of a small trip I did this year in my RS6 avant c7 with stop start off, as it annoys me and I don’t like to think of the thermal damage it might cause the engine and cats. I Average 34.1 mpg over 684 miles 4 adults up and boot full to the ceiling with gear… that included some out to restaurants and food shops short trip mix into the equation. Not the best I have ever done.. but pretty respectable.
Wish the fuel quality and the stigma of diesel powered vehicles were a non issue in NA. I work as a technician at a BMW dealer and see numerous issues with the Diesel engines available to us here, with most of those issues coming from the fuel systems blowing up, most likely induced by poor quality diesel fuel. It’s been so bad BMW issue recalls to replace the fuel pumps. Anyways, good video Joe!! Keep up the good work!!
Wouldn’t be better but worse. Cruise control uses power more often to stay at the speed doesn’t do coasting and this main feature of eco pro. Plus it would brake when going downhill as well.
@@niksapaypal2077 yes I know it stops you from going over by cutting off acceleration but doesn’t brake for you so when you go downhill it will allow you to over speed, cruise control will control brakes and not go over set speed for long.
@@whitecrowuk575 Depends on the car. Old-school cruise control would never touch the brakes, but many modern cars can be very advanced and do things like keeping a set following distance to the car in front.
Great video! I've always wanted to do something similar with my 2011 Toyota Auris (90 HP, 1.4l diesel engine). The most mileage I obtained in my car was around 21.2 km/l (around 59.8 mpg) in January, but I know I can stretch this even further for a car that does on average 16-18 km/l. I am curious though on how much you've spent for the whole trip aside from fuel (so tolls, Eurotunnel, etc.). Surely a drive like this doesn't come cheap, and as you've shown and persevered it's not for the fainthearted! Cheers from Italy ;) EDIT: in 2024 I've stretched it even further to around 22-23 km/l on average. If the conditions allow it I sometimes reach 25 km/l (4 l/100 km)
@@PelleCristi The Dutch seem to do it as well. Nothing that a good calculator can't fix in 5 seconds time. 4,71L per 100km for Luca. The quick calculation showed 4.3L per 100km average with that BMW. When I still had my Jetta with the 1.9L TDI I almost always managed 5.1L average going to the South of France. But I only drive at 100 to 110km/h on the GPS and it only had a 5 speed gearbox. If you go above those speeds it goes up really really fast. Best speed to maintain a very low consumption would be like at 70 or 80kmh. Hi Joe I'm guessing by the number of times you mentioned Adrian flux insurance that they more or less paid for the whole trip 😁😁 but seriously I'm also guessing that this trip was difficult in that you had to resist mashing the pedal to the floor for 22 and a half hours, brilliant vlog Joe 👏👏👏.
Well done gents! I thought I did well with my 900 miles from 1 tank over 2 consecutive days but you smashed it! Day 1 from Southampton to Penzance and back. Following day was from Southampton to Newcastle Emlyn and back. Lots of big hills on both roads. After the 900 miles, I put 85 litres in the 88 Litre tank which worked out to a trip MPG of 48. The on board computer was showing me an average of 52mpg. Vehicle used at the time was my old faithful 2004 Mercedes S320L CDI. I guess we have some things in common despite an age gap. Large german barges with straight 6 diesel engines. I do wonder if I could have achieved the magical 1000 if I had driven as carefully as you guys and if I had fitted some low resistance tyres too.
I got a quote with Adrian Flux on my 2022 X3 M40i. They were more than double Hastings Direct and several others. I asked them why as they’d insured my previous car competitively and they actually told me they aren’t competitive on vehicles with a value higher than £30k! Seeing as most of your content is above this value seems strange that you push them all the time.

Thank you for all your entertaining content. Andrew
But why did they feel the need to do this is one continuous journey. There is another efficiency-shaving factor you probably underestimated: Spanish road surfaces. Spanish motorway pavement is very coarse compared to most other European countries and, in my experience, this alone cuts about 10% off your normal gas-mileage. Nice video!

My observation, having done this trip a few times: You may have been better leaving the first evening rather than waiting til early morning. I never sleep well the night before a big trip anyway so leaving home at 9pm instead of 5am makes sense. Also means the end of the journey when you are beginning to tire is in daylight and your body clock isn't demanding sleep quite so urgently.
can vouch for this strategy. also works great for an austria to southern croatia drive
I guess each strategy has it's positives and negatives.
lol I agree, I’m always too excited about the trip to sleep 😂
i rather drive after a nights sleep instead of trying to stay awake for 30+ hours

@@Nollekeuh RPM at a a certain speed has absolutely no correlation to engine size. It's the gearbox..

(The 1 downer I would have to say owning BM'S is - avoid the run-flats like the plague, they have no give whatsoever, crashing on unseen potholes or sleeping policemen if not going REALLY slow and they don't run flat for more than a (very) few kms. before the tire wall starts to rip apart.)

@@khalidacosta7133 85 miles in France vs 62 miles you will cut your time by 25%, its significant
Love the video Joe! Been here since the first m135i you owned.
Can confirm the videos only get better!
Great video. Reminds me of the old Top Gear Audi A8 challenge Clarkson did many moons ago from London to Edinburgh and back.
Well done, Gents! Thanks for sharing such an excellent adventure!
God damn, thats some diesel power! Electric cars aint on their way unless they come up with some insane battery technology. No logical human mind would buy a 60k euros EV to go max 250 miles, when my 15 year old diesel goes 650 miles. And nobody is gonna buy them used. Typical cash grab disguised as "eco".
How often do u drive over 250 miles in one day? Come on.
@@jondonnelly3 omg, I'm so tired of that argument. if I fuel up my diesel like once a week in 2 mins, why the fuck would I want to charge up a car every day ? Especially if I cant do it at home, I'd lose hours every day just to fuckin' charge a car.
@@whitecrowuk575
I recently asked for a valuation on my 5 series and the garage hasn’t stopped calling me and it hasn’t lost anything.
German carts depreciate ridiculously fast due to the expensive maintenance and the fact most of them were abused as lease cars for their first 3 years.
Great video Joe! Genuinely interesting and really well filmed. Much to be said for your content vs other YT rubbish! 👍
Epic journey and what a machine. You should do an edinburgh and back with one of you in that and the other in an x5 with same engine to highlight cost/mpg difference
Great video - and what a great engine - 2 minutes to fill up and you have 1200 miles of range.
I'd love to see the same run again (or even on the way back?) driving the speed limit, stuff cruise control on (as most would do. 62 mph is way too slow I'd say)
Great video though.
Well done! Amazing how far you can do in it. My 740d G12 wouldn’t go that far - I think 800-900 max
Well done to you and Patrick for producing such a wonderful video on your trip to Spain. Very interesting and entertaining as well as informative.
How the f#@k you did that in 1 run fella is amazing! 22 hours!!! Well done mate great stuff 👍
Such a great channel, and since I love road trips really enjoying your vids and adventures, please keep them coming!
Amazing achievement Joe, so impressive on so many fronts, congratulations! Would be nice to know a few details like what you had your eco pro individual settings on, did you have Aircon the whole way, any tips for driving like you did and getting such amazing mpg figures out of the car etc.
Sweet. I WIN! You mentioned in your last video that we should guess the mileage. I was bang on. 😮
Firstly, amazing video! Secondly, could you do some similar tests with a "normal" cruising speed of this car, so lets say 130-140km/h? How much would the range change?
I would say the range would drop by 25%
A great achievement, well done chaps! Testament to the car but also restraint of the drivers. Makes such a difference to efficiency when driving at a slower speed on the Motorway /Autoroute. Perfect car to waft the miles away.
My man still puts 4K in the title as if it's still 2016
My man likes his own comments as if his comments are worthy 🤣
100% with you. Take a diesel, add a big tank of fuel and off you go. Not surprised with the economy. I have a 2019 E220d and get 55 mpg at 75 mph. Have easily achieved 67mpg in the Netherlands when struck at 100 kph limit on their motorways.
I don’t object to an electric car but it’s got to be able to do a decent long drive in one day before i even think about changing. To me that’s 4 hrs +, 20 min rest and another 4 hrs (500 miles with only as 20 min charge top up).
Great video 👌👌
Would like to see them so the trip back at the actual speed limit. That would be a real world test. Fab video by the way!
Probably a deficit of 10% or so. It’ll still happily do 55-60 mpg. Which is still insane considering weight and engine size and power. It’s got a 78 litre fuel tank so range will always be good
Way back wasnt direct but we did about 40-50mpg max
@@BecomingPatrick still superb nonetheless
As someone else said, on paper this shouldn’t be an interesting watch but it was brilliant! Just enough stats etc. Nice work Joe.
I just did a 8000km road trip across Europe in 2012 520d and consumption was 5.3 l/100km (driving 130 - 150 km/h most of the time)
interesting that its the same weight as this car, bmw did some weight reduction exercise in g11 and g30
Epic trip and video with a excellent sound track.
One question: Did you use the cruise control/active cruise control, or you manage the throttle?
We used the speed limiter rather than cruise control. Meant we couldn’t go over 60mph but cruise didn’t hamper us from carefully slowing down if needed
This BMW 7 Series looks best
You remind me of a small trip I did this year in my RS6 avant c7 with stop start off, as it annoys me and I don’t like to think of the thermal damage it might cause the engine and cats. I Average 34.1 mpg over 684 miles 4 adults up and boot full to the ceiling with gear… that included some out to restaurants and food shops short trip mix into the equation. Not the best I have ever done.. but pretty respectable.
This is pretty impressive man
Wish the fuel quality and the stigma of diesel powered vehicles were a non issue in NA.
Would’ve been interesting to see how the MPG would’ve been if you’d have used cruise control instead of the limited
I was just thinking the same thing. My Mk7 GTI gets the best fuel efficiency when using cruise control on eco mode, I think he would too.
Wouldn’t be better but worse. Cruise control uses power more often to stay at the speed doesn’t do coasting and this main feature of eco pro. Plus it would brake when going downhill as well.
@@whitecrowuk575 and you know what limited mean?
@@niksapaypal2077 yes I know it stops you from going over by cutting off acceleration but doesn’t brake for you so when you go downhill it will allow you to over speed, cruise control will control brakes and not go over set speed for long.
@@whitecrowuk575 Depends on the car. Old-school cruise control would never touch the brakes, but many modern cars can be very advanced and do things like keeping a set following distance to the car in front.
Fair play lads just back from 3600km Tour de France in my g30 530d xdrive. Which done 43.5 mpg overal. Amazing!!!
Cheers from Italy ;)
EDIT: in 2024 I've stretched it even further to around 22-23 km/l on average. If the conditions allow it I sometimes reach 25 km/l (4 l/100 km)
Who tf measures in km/l and not l/100 km

@@PelleCristi I do.
(about 45 to 50mph) then you will considerabely consume a lot less in most cases.
Joe …. Fantastic.. you both had been brillant - and the car - as well …. My Brother and friend - just broke down - 3 days ago … in my Holiday First day -535 d with 315 tsd km - so i am still emotional…. But the machine was a hero…6 Zylinder Diesel - it’s quiet powerful efficient - cool … so … keep on going… that was true „hommage „ for a Great Peace of Technology… big thanx
Great video. I can’t even make it to clermont Ferrand from Calais on one tank in my 140M 😂
Seeing as most of your content is above this value seems strange that you push them all the time.
that is interesting!
Loved this video. What a trip and what a car, the 7 series looks immaculate and beautiful, I especially love the alloy wheels they look great. Would love to know how you got home and, you must have used the air conditioning? BTW the picture quality was crystal clear which added to my enjoyment. Thanks fellas.👏
Another entertaining video Joe, I like the way you have thought totally outside the box By being so creative with the idea of such a trip.
It is through watching your channel that I bought a BMW M140i, which I absolutely love, also I use Adrian Flux to insure it, again because of your recommendation. Thank you for all your entertaining content. Andrew
I can't get that kind of mpg in my 1.6 tdci focus. That's more than impressive. Electric cars won't ever reach this level
But why did they feel the need to do this is one continuous journey. I own a BMW diesel by the way so not a tree hugger but I really don't understand this argument of needing to go 300-400+ miles on a single charge/ tank usually on long trips I like to stop every 2/2.5 hours anyway . If I need to go 1000miles in short time I would just fly ....
Electric cars easily outperform diesel or petrol cars. I’ve been driving 60000 kms in my EV and have an average consumption (converted to L/100kms) of 1.8. That is the equivalent of 158 mpg.
I've got a stage 3 pumaspeed ford focus st mk3.5 st diesel with 278hp and 580nm, on a long run I get 68mpg
Nice video and good performance for your BMW 730d =)
I had before a 2002 Mercedes S320 CDI W220, with full diesel tank (diesel excellium Total + injector cleaner) i was able to drive easy 1400km from Nice city to Cologne. With ac on, 90-110 km/h in France, 130-160 km/h in Italy and Germany, and 100-120 km/h in Switzerland. Fuel tank was 88L (max 92L), and fuel consumption was 6.3 L/100km !!!
never never use adrian flux for insurer - SCAMMERS
Superb video guys - thanks. What an engine. Especially loved this as Madrid is my second home - so know that drive quite well. I actually have two 3.0d BMWs. Its a sublime motor.
