Hi Joe, my son and I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos over the last 4 or 5 years. Thanks for all the work you've put into them. I'm sure this one will be great too.
Another testament to these cars is the fact that the guys who set the world record done it in a new car and to be only 100 miles short of that record in a 13yr old car with 100k miles is truly remarkable. Outstanding video guys.👋👋👋👋
I wonder if you didn't drive onto Central London and just kept driving around the M25 🤔 . Would that keep you in par or even beat the record 💪 . Also taking that right lane at roadworks which caused extra use of fuel. Also stopping for rest instead of queueing at traffic jam 🤔 i think you could have beaten that record 😉 but the adventure was more than worth it so congrats 👏🎉💪👌👍💯 🙌
thats volkswagen for you we used to have a golf 4 wagon and after like 15 years orso that still did 25 ish km to the liter we could go to paris and back (from friesland netherlands) on not even 3/4 of a tank
Ditto buddy, what amazing memories and a great video to watch back in years to come... My three favorite vids have been with you, the 7, the 911 Touring and now this ❤️👊
Not to forget this was not some marketing, manufacturer measuring, this was with traffic jams, heat, rain, starting and stopping the car etc. Well done!
We confuse ourselves deliberately to hide the pain. No one here knows how far a litre will get them so we can believe it's a really long way. (It isn't of course). When we are tempted to work it out, we do it only while we're driving, and always do it accurately by dividing by 0.22 or multiplying by 4.544, which we never quite succeed at, so we remain happily deluded 🙃.
Had something very similar when I got my first diesel, a Peugeot 307 1.6HDi - a superb car, and contrary to reports, very reliable. But, I couldn’t get over the fact that the fuel gauge didn’t seem to move, especially compared with the preceding car, an Alfa 145, which was rather thirsty!
Thank you guys, showing what has been available to us for the past 15 years or more. Less than 3L per 100km in a very good comfort, the Passat is by all means big enough, comfortable enough etc. And the engine is at 97,000 miles
there's no way that with average real world drive combined highway and regular roads in traffic you could achieve this number (aka under 3,0l) with regular, stock passat, tires etc. i can bet on this. this could just maybe could be possible with let say some lighter car combo and renault 1.5 dci engine (i also did own car with that engine and i know what is capable of in terms of consumption etc), but even that highly unlikely.
@izoyt you are wrong, I average 60mpg in a 3.0 litre 525d which has an urban extra figure of only 56. All these figures are commuting to work. On one long trip got 68mpg.
@@izoyt Ok, could be 1-1,5l more, but still the figure is very low, more so a car with 145,000 km, 10 or more years. The more interesting thing for me is how with the whole hype with EV's we have spent hundreds of billions, still counting (early adopters paying 100k or so, governments with all the incentives, developing the charging infrastructure, other car brands to develop and catch up with Tesla, and funny enough scrapping so many cars like the one in the test... How about just spending it to improve the most polluting industries, transport, shipping, plastics, fashion industry... we would have achieved multiple times more!
@@marklydon435 That's 3,92 l/100km if online conversion is correct. This is maybe more plausible, but imo it's not real life figure, unless it's calculated on tank, not by onboard computer (they all lie for at least 0,5,l). which i highly doubt. If you try to tell me heavy, 3l diesel car with rear drive axle is more efficient than half size engine, sorry mate, it wont happen. I know at least 2 bimmer first hand (one regular rear drive and one with x-drive), both diesel 2.0l engine, i know what can you achieve or better to say can't achieve. from first hand, most close to number braging in the video you can done with dci engine and with lighter car. yes, diesel can be very efficient, but please lets leave fairytales for children books.
@@plamenkostov1301i agree everything you said, i ees just trying to be realistic with figures, if we are talking serious record breaking etc. i prefer real deal, not hyped banners for youtube.
A very easy task. Every Czechoslovak, Pole knows that the TDI engine produces diesel. So, when driving on vacation from the Czech Republic to Croatia, it is necessary to remove the fuel so that it does not leak out of the tank.
had the 2.0 TDI version of this car and managed to drive 40 miles back home with no coolant, after it dumped it on the dual carriageway. The car is still going with over 200K miles on the clock.
vw has had so many years of building little turbo diesels that they really have the equations figured out. skipping all the emissions stuff, you really can say that vw makes the best small diesels in the world. excellent power, incredible mileage, and insanely durable. you can just beat on those engines, and as long as you keep fresh oil in it, they'll just go and go and go
@@6braceface it's a sign that the thermostat is defective. At VW the coolant gauge always displays 90, if it goes below - it's far below. They made it like this do people don't call like "my car runs warmer" (my TSI can get 103°C on the highway)
Great video. Due to financial constraints many years ago I had no choice but to eek as many mpg out of whatever vehicle I was driving. This style of driving has stayed with me long into the time where I no longer need to worry. Highlights have been 85mpg out of a single tank of diesel in a Peugeot 106d, 37mpg from a Jagaur XK 5.0, and 110mpg out of my Honda NC750X motorcycle...
Thank you Joe for making this video, MIND is a charity that is close to my heart as well. So happy to hear you support and referenced MIND and the work they do in this video.
@@MJ-uk6lu where I'm from It's more Seen as a non fun Work car, and since the Dieselgate scandal Diesel Sales have Gone down by a Lot. Thats why I feel they are a Bit underrated at the Moment 🤷🏻♂️ You still See them a Lot but the reaction when I mention I Drive one/ the Diesel Variant is Always a Bit Mixed.
@@steamkrypton2990 I'm from Lithuania myself and I see this car and all of its variants (like Passat B6, Škoda Superb, VW CC) every day. It's very popular and 2/3's of them are diesels. 1.9 TDI is particularly popular and known, often in other cars too like Golf, A4, Octavia. If anything they are just too popular and there are other decent diesel cars that are also cheap to run, perhaps even a lot cheaper to run.
a buddy of mine just bought a b7 passat tdi with a 6 speed. i think it's the 2.0 model (USA, we didnt get the cool little 1.6 then) for an excellent price (for our market, which is pathetically high for no reason other than greed mixed with consumer stupidity)
Funnily enough when I attempted my own range challenge in a BMW 520d with the same tank capacity as your passat I actually ended up on the exact same number in kilometres that you did in miles (1484). And I thought that was impressive. Absolutely lost for words.
Replying to your comment because of that number too in KM :D My parents do this "trip" every year from their house in Paris to North portugal and it was exactly 1484 this year. It changes every year with roadworks and everything (used to be over 1650km when I was a kid, 25 years ago). What took ~20hours in the past is now taking ~13hours with stops. He has been using a Accord 2.2Ictdi (2013) which does incredible too MPG wise (~60mpg, but he averages 140km/h the whole way...) I wonder what that passat would do at those average speeds.
Incredible!! Just proves older cars can be superior to newer models!! I drive a 2002 Audi a4 1.9tdi 270,000 miles on the clock and get 60mpg on a standard run without even trying!
Not true. It's just a testament to technology advancements, that we do not need 70L fuel tanks anymore in this day and age. My Audi S5 Sportback had a 58L fuel tank. A sporty car that is larger and heavier than the car in the video, which had a 70L fuel tank. That's not even a very good example, as many cars today have a mere 30L - 45L fuel tank, literally half of the car they used.
Thank the UA-cam algorithm for recommending this to me and you guys for making it! Epic trip. Your delight, enthusiasm and relief were great to see throughout. Well done on this achievement 🎉
Can't beat diesel for efficiency and convenience. I have a 2010 Golf 1.6 TDI as a beater, I'm in the motor trade and took it in PX back in 2021 for £1300, it's a bit scruffy and only a base model S. I've done 44k miles in it, it's now on 142k miles. Obviously a smaller tank than the Passat but it still has a range of 650 miles on a full tank and averages 58mpg in mixed use and only £35 annual road tax. All it's needed is oil changes, tyres and brake pads. The belt was done just before I bought it and no issues with the clutch. It's worth £2k retail still - totally boring to drive but what a great car to run. You only need to look at what Uber/Minicab drivers use - the majority are VW Group TDis or hybrid Toyotas.
@@fritsified5952 It's technically not "road tax", it's "excise duty" which is a tax on the vehicle itself based on emissions, engine size, and fuel type.
That's true. I had a 1991citroen zx 1.9d with 240000 miles, I used to get 500 miles out of a 40 litre tank, in stop start traffic, 70-80 mph on motorway, I was 19 years old so i wasn't not being careful on the throttle.
92mpg is impressive, I thought I was doing well to get 44mpg this week on the French motorway in my petrol Audi TT at normal motorway speeds. I went off the motorway between Reims and Saint Quentin because of the torrential rain with a spectacular thunderstorm
@@regbarnard2866Just to play devil's advocate- and not giving an opinion of ULEZ either way- but the point of it is to cut air pollution. Whether a car can do 92mpg isn't the point, it's how many toxic particles it chucks out in the process.
@@staggabob looking at emissions just at the car is not smart since the energy involved in extracting, refining and then transporting that fuel is also a very big factor arguably a much larger factor then just the emissions from the car. Less fuel being used means less of all of the emissions until the fuel gets to the pump from the ground which has to be a net benefit in my opinion but I don't have exact figures to back this up. honestly a real enviromentalist solution is actually good and accessible public transit but no government wants to shell out that much tax money on infrastructure that's going to reduce their tax revenues in the long run and cost a lot more then just building roads and taxing the fuel, cars and emissions. People buying expensive cars and fuel is good for the economy efficient mass transit isn't if it's an already developed country where people can afford cars relatively easily.
@@regbarnard2866 Its the high amounts of NOx that diesel produces that make it undesirable without the additions of systems like adblue that get it put on ULEZ. NOx is nothing to do with global warming really, but NOx is Toxic on it own, but can also lead to tropospheric ozone and acid rain in extreme cases. Central london had a real NOx issue, and that's why the ULEZ zone was originally introduced. The expansion i can agree with most, was an unnecessary money making move, that has really damaged the reputation of the ULEZ zone.
That is extraordinary. I have a 2016 Passat 2.0L TDI Diesel. I used to get 4.9L/100km = 57mpg British. Now I get around 5.3L/100km = 53mpg. I notice you kept your speed to 55mph which is around 90kmh. that makes a huge difference of course. I cruise on motorway at 75mph/120kmh.
No flipping way, seriously. What a brilliant video, Not just because of what you achieved, but also because it reminded me of my own VW Passat (2.0 - 12 Plate) which i had for 4 years, what a car. Not in any way exciting, but an excellent family, do it all motor. Super vid, so entertaining
Brilliant video. It just goes (an enormous distance) to show what brilliance can be achieved by efficient diesel engines. If hasty laws and narrow minded politicians had listened to engineers diesel technology could have continued to advance. Politics aside. Fantastic job gentleman.
Amazing I loved this! My old ls1 c5 corvette could surprisingly do 53mpg at 50-55mph(seriously long gearing but had the torque at 1100rpm) and I attempted something similar to this when I went to the Nurburgring and I managed 810m/1303km from the 72 Litre tank. I soon got the average down to the 20s after having some fun in Germany :)
Hey there I’ll be honest and say this was only specific to certain speeds possibly more so than other cars. Around 70-80mph it would still do 35-40 but there was a sweet spot around 50mph and you feathered the throttle. My normal driving average was 26mpg(UK) My New C7 does 22mpg normal driving but can get upto 35 if you’re really careful. In V4 mode you can do 40 plus but I didn’t buy the car for that :)
Yeah I did read about that and it’s part of the reason I havnt used it in 2 years. Its pretty seamless but the odd time you pressed the throttle sharply you could feel a jolt which never felt right to me.
@@chrishart8548 it's utilized because stays there, is not lost, also running almost dry is the best way to detonate the injection high pressure pump...
This is normal, most cars do have enough fuel for 50 kilometers even if you hit 0 on the dash. But driving low on fuel for diesel is not good in my opinion cuz of pressure. Keeping the tank half full or close to full will be the best option for diesel car even if that means you are carrying more weight.

What a fantastic trip, great results and fun to watch! Well done 👏 Btw, love diesels and it’s so such a shame to discontinue them, especially considering how far technology of fuel efficiency has come.
Congratulations. I myself did a hypermiling try in April with my 530xd touring. (265 hp / 1.997 kg dry weight). Ca. 40% of the time I was behind a truck with the adaptive cruise control. Rest of the time without wind shadow. Drove from near Hamburg to Fyn and back. Round about 650 km with an average speed of 79,8 km/h. Result was a calculated 4,13 l/ 100 km. I'm very happy with this. Cheers from Germany
Great watch! First view of one of your videos and 40 minutes well spent. Proves how good the diesel engine is…. I am a bit biased with the Passat as I bought a B6 new in January 2010 and still own it with 167000 miles on it…. They are superb vehicles! 🚙 Congratulations to you both🍻
Remember the Top Gear episode where JC drives the Audi A8 V8 Diesel from London to Edinburgh and back? I think VAG diesels do a little 'cough' when you are about 15 miles from running out.
It’s all about the environment. Average EV manufacturing emissions of 8 tons of CO2. 8M grams = 8 tons - 5 tons to be generous for the production of the Passat 3M grams at 109 g/km approximately 27522.93 kilometers can be covered, never mind how the electricity is generated 😂
Absolutely adore my B7 Passat, have easily done Sydney to Melbourne still plenty of Diesel to drive around whilst down there, love how comfortable it is on a decent set to tyres too!
Well done both! What a mega journey from you all and that impressive 13 year old car! We already had unbelievably efficient ICE vehicles over a decade ago 🎉🎉
Can confirm, the 1.6Tdi can be a very efficient powertrain Even in a VW Touran we usually get 5.5L/100km on winter tires and 5.0L/100KM on summer tires(goodyear efficient grip performance 2)at realistic 130-145km/h speeds on the autobahn
That’s brilliant. I have a Merc c220d auto which I bought new 4 years ago. At 66 litres the fuel tank isn’t huge. It has 192bhp and is capable of 150mph, or more on a long downhill but still does an easy 60 to 75 mpg on a run at normal speeds so I usually see a range of 900 plus miles on a full tank. Strangely for a turbo engine, it seems much more efficient in hot weather, maybe it leans out the fuel mixture at high ambient temperatures? I really like only having to fill it up once a month or so!
Diesel engines can be more efficient in hot weather compared to cold weather for several reasons: Fuel Combustion Efficiency: In hot weather, the air entering the engine is warmer. Since diesel engines rely on compression to ignite the fuel, warmer air can help achieve the necessary compression temperature more easily. This can lead to more efficient combustion. Reduced Fuel Viscosity: Diesel fuel tends to thicken in cold temperatures, which can make it more difficult to inject and atomize properly. In hot weather, the fuel remains more fluid, allowing for better injection and atomization. This improved atomization leads to more efficient combustion. Reduced Engine Warm-Up Time: Diesel engines take longer to warm up compared to gasoline engines. In colder weather, it takes more time and fuel to bring the engine up to its optimal operating temperature. In hot weather, the engine reaches its optimal temperature more quickly, reducing the amount of fuel consumed during the warm-up phase. Lower Air Density: While lower air density in hot weather might seem like a disadvantage because it means less oxygen for combustion, modern diesel engines often compensate for this with turbochargers. The lower air density can slightly reduce the intake air resistance, which can reduce the engine's pumping losses, thereby improving efficiency. Less Friction: Engine oil and other lubricants tend to be more viscous in cold temperatures, which increases internal friction and reduces efficiency. In hot weather, these lubricants have lower viscosity, leading to less internal friction and improved overall efficiency. Battery and Electrical Systems: Cold weather affects the battery and other electrical systems, making them less efficient. Diesel engines often require more electrical power for components like glow plugs, which are used to preheat the combustion chamber in cold weather. In hot weather, these systems are less strained, contributing to overall efficiency.
All engines get better fuel efficiency in warm weather, because hot air is less dense, so less fuel is required. Cold air gives more power, but less efficiency.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ Thats a very hurtful generalisation. Petrol cars don't like too much heat because of knocking or fuel boling in the fuel lines or fuel rails.

Wowowow!!! What a sensational video Joe! 🙌That makes my 400 miles on one tank in my C63 look weak… and you did that nearly 4 times over! 🤣 I absolutely love these sort of videos, and I cannot thank you, Patrick, Michelin and Elite garages enough for making it happen. My London to Edinburgh trip was minute in comparison, but the amount of planning you’d have to do is vastly appreciated and commendable. I genuinely thought the car had it past London, and then you started burning fuel for fun once surpassing your destination 🤣 I was so pleased you made it, but a little sad that these super frugal diesels have been shunted away, to make room for the EV agenda, whereas they could’ve invested this money into making diesels even more economical! Anyway, I am rambling and smashing job on the video Joe, I very much look forward to what the next fuel challenge could be! 🙏😁
That was a brilliant video and an excellent challenge. The planning that must have gone into this has really paid off. I tip my hat hat to the VW! Outstanding MPG.
Every couple of weeks I UA-cam search words to the effect, “hyper miling to/from Uk”, one tank challenge etc and when this landed I was, pardon the pun, gassed 😂 Awesome video my friend look forward to the next one
I really enjoyed that. Such a well put together video. Felt the excitement, fear, pride, achievement, relief! The lot. Well done for making it happen and putting it all together 😊
I run a workshop here in Perth WA. We have a couple of Passat wagons (estates) in our free vehicle loan fleet comprising 6 vehicles. One is a 2012 2.0 TDI and the other is a 2016 Petrol. We service them religiously and clean them each time they are used, they give us zero trouble. The Passat is a really great all round car.
Great video. I had one of these 1.6tdi Passats for about 5 years (estate version). It was a good family car but I could never go back to such a small engine in such a big car. Driving is now much more enjoyable with a few more bhp.

years ago i had a Ford 2.9 litre Cosworth i used at least 1 full tank every 2 weeks not really travelling much further than work. That engine died doing 56mph on the motorway. I needed a car pretty sharpish and bought a Peugeot 406 1.9 TDI from a friend of a friends dad. It was only a temporary car, but the old fella looked after it. I could not believe my tank of fuel was lasting over 2 months doing the same sort of mileage. Also, one month while living in Birmingham i drove in the deisel Peugeot to visit a mate in Barrow-In-Furnace, drove around for the weekend, drove back home and drove for another 2 weeks back and forth to work before having to put any more fuel in. Opened my eyes.
Best thing is that you don't have to stop at a fuel station and see the exterior design of the Passat. Worst part is that the interior is so booring, there is the danger of falling asleep at the wheel. Good to have a passenger during a trip.
Amazing trip and result. Sadly this shows how politicians are so out of touch, this car wouldn't meet Edinburgh LEZ even though as you have shown it can return over 90mpg. Madness
@@EvzenEmanuelI like how you mentioned „newest yaris” and „city driving” First of all you could buy around 10 to 15 passat’s from this video for the price of a single new yaris. The whole point of this is to travel as cheap as possible. Throw that yaris on the motorway where regenerative braking or gear ratio’s aren’t a thing and lets see how quickly it will activate the petrol engine/generator. Most likely making it consume plenty of petrol. Remember that yaris is heavy due to batteries etc. That small engine will need to work hard to get it running, sounds like a lot of petrol to me.

Only talking about part of a tankfull in my case - and going by the car's computer - but I once managed to squeeze 95.2 miles out of a gallon in a mk3 Renault Clio DCI106 on the M1 in Staffordshire (north and back south through 40mph-controlled roadworks at night-time), my only ever real attempt at maximizing economy. In the real world of driving at normal speeds, I've gone from Dover ferry port to Corley Services (on the M6) on two gallons, just over 165 miles averaging just over 62mph (so no annoying truck drivers by sitting at 50mph AND including the traffic-heavy crawl to get through the Dartford crossing) GPS-authenticated distance and speed, on a Sunday afternoon/evening. This was not even the theoretical economy version of the car - the DCI86 - but a genuine testimony to the excellence of Renault's 1.5-litre diesel with a variable-vane turbo. The car just loved a motorway cruise - on any long trip it would magically go into a super-sipper mode after around 70 miles and it was never difficult to average 67mpg over 250 miles of decent motorway driving. The official average economy for this car was 61.4mpg, but I genuinely averaged more than 63mpg over 187,000 miles and 13 years of ownership By absolute contrast, nowadays I run a mk6.5 Ford Fiesta Econetic, which is supposed to be capable of 85mpg overall, but which has struggled to better 70mpg over 50000+ miles. It really hates motorway-speed cruising for economy purposes, even though it has taller gearing and the 1.6-litre PSA motor is less powerful - you would think that it might be better than the Renault when given an opportunity to earn its economy spurs, but no.... The same run as might easily get me 67mpg in the Clio now gets me only 63mpg in the Fiesta. The PSA engine is just primitive by comparison with the Renault engine. It's also a bit of a lemon by comparison - the DPF clogged up and I had to fork out on a turbo rebuild. Suffice to say that I won't be having any more DPF problems! So - why don't I still run a Renault? A very poor experience with a failed fuse box, nine weeks off the road waiting for a replacement (for a component which was reckoned to be a common failure item in the mk3 Clio AND which was a common part for all variants of the mk3 Clio, so presumably was manufactured in the many millions), hundreds of pounds spent on taxis to get to/from work, etc. Renault customer service - Nil Points! They lost a loyal customer in me - between my father and me there was no less than 58 years of Renault ownership in 14 different cars - and I will go to my grave without ever owning another Renault. That said - I will also never own another PSA-engined car, nor another Ford. The Fiesta is not only primitively-engineered, but also terribly uncomfortable due to too-hard seats that can't be raised high enough to provide under-thigh support and cause me crippling knee and ankle pains on a long journey. Cabin ergonomics are just awful for a car designed by one of the world's biggest manufacturers. Ford design - Nil Points! The only reason I haven't got rid of it is that I'm too scrupulous on the matter of inflicting this car on another owner - nobody else should have to put up with such a bad car - so I'll wear it like my own metallic hair shirt. Please - for the sake of anybody reading this - DON'T BUY A FORD FIESTA. If diesels are still available when I come to my next car, I will definitely head for VAG - I really should have gone that way at the time I acquired my Fiesta. Petrol? Thirsty no. Hybrid? - Expensive no. Electric? Heavy expensive inconvenient no. The EUrocratic hatred of diesel has ruined motoring.
Fabulous stuff. Why, oh why, did I buy a hybrid?!! I always knew the Passat diesel was a great family car, but that trip defies logic. Absolutely epic. Thanks for the enlightenment!
Fantastic video Guys. I've just bought my Father's 2012 passat 2.0 tdi sport that he bought new and look after extremely well. Its covered 162000 miles and is still driving beautifully. I smile every time I look at the fuel gauge because it moves so slowly 😊 Joe, I noticed in the video that you're cars satnav has been upgraded. Just wondering what type you install.
they are diesel engines, what do you expect? diesel fuel have about 20% better energy density from start (compared to gasoline), combine that with high torque at low rpms etc, it is perfect cruiser machine.
This shows just how good diesels are/were. Shame VW muddied the water back in 2015 with Dieselgate which initiated the diesel decline 😫 Awesome video btw 👍
The 4cyl diesels were generally always really reliable. Combine that with a manual and MacPherson strut, and they are not much worse than a Toyota. But people like their V6, wet clutches, DSGs, multilinks, air suspension... what else?
VW cars are beasts, cheap to maintain, and very reliable. My friend's dad has B6 Passat with 660k km on it, still drives just fine. My dad has B7 passat with 300k km, drives just fine. And I have a Golf 7 with 200k km, drives just fine 0 problems.
1.6TDI is the child of the legendary 1.9TDI and I used to get 700 miles from a tank with a heavy foot too. VW really outdid themselves with this engine. Absolutely madness even over 1k miles on 1 tank but 1.6k? Madness.
Amazing car! This was my first car, bought it second hand then in 2016 with 150K Km on the Odometer. I did Gothenburg (Sweden) to Cologne (Germany) many times on one tank without ever bothering about stopping to refuel anywhere. That is about 1300 km and I usually arrive still with at least a 3rd of my tank still left. I really enjoyed the car, still missing it sometime! Volvo V60 D3 with 2.0 liter diesel engine is also very fuel efficient. Not as efficient as the passat, but still does the same journey now on one tank and enough fuel left to do a run around in the city.

We confuse ourselves deliberately to hide the pain. No one here knows how far a litre will get them so we can believe it's a really long way. (It isn't of course).
When we are tempted to work it out, we do it only while we're driving, and always do it accurately by dividing by 0.22 or multiplying by 4.544, which we never quite succeed at, so we remain happily deluded 🙃.

there's no way that with average real world drive combined highway and regular roads in traffic you could achieve this number (aka under 3,0l) with regular, stock passat, tires etc. i can bet on this. this could just maybe could be possible with let say some lighter car combo and renault 1.5 dci engine (i also did own car with that engine and i know what is capable of in terms of consumption etc), but even that highly unlikely.

@@regbarnard2866Just to play devil's advocate- and not giving an opinion of ULEZ either way- but the point of it is to cut air pollution. Whether a car can do 92mpg isn't the point, it's how many toxic particles it chucks out in the process.
@@staggabobULEZ is a revenue collection scheme and nothing more. If it was about clean air, paying a daily tax would solve exactly what?
Absolutely loving those piano timelapse fragments, just like the in the 730d challenge. Keep up the good work👌🏻
That’s brilliant.
Diesel engines can be more efficient in hot weather compared to cold weather for several reasons:
Fuel Combustion Efficiency: In hot weather, the air entering the engine is warmer.

Don’t feel bad brother, I only get 450 miles out of my t6.1
@@HughieMunro I suppose it is a much heavier vehicle though!
That was a brilliant video and an excellent challenge. The planning that must have gone into this has really paid off. I tip my hat hat to the VW! Outstanding MPG.
Hi Joe,great video!
Myself having a Passat B8 190hp Estate 2018 and its absolutely amazing!Spacious, reliable, comfort and economic!
'Northern Perimeter GP!' 😂
Mega video guys, high and lows, captured it all. 👊😉
Every couple of weeks I UA-cam search words to the effect, “hyper miling to/from Uk”, one tank challenge etc and when this landed I was, pardon the pun, gassed 😂
Awesome video my friend look forward to the next one
Love that!
I really enjoyed that. Such a well put together video. Felt the excitement, fear, pride, achievement, relief! The lot. Well done for making it happen and putting it all together 😊
Thanks!
Unbelievable - well done. Especially in a car that's over a decade old. VW & Michelin for the win ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@JoeAchilles1 What about in a BMW 320d ED Plus next please ;-)
I run a workshop here in Perth WA. We have a couple of Passat wagons (estates) in our free vehicle loan fleet comprising 6 vehicles. One is a 2012 2.0 TDI and the other is a 2016 Petrol. We service them religiously and clean them each time they are used, they give us zero trouble. The Passat is a really great all round car.
Got to love an MPG hero, can’t wait to watch this! 😍
Hope you enjoy it!
Pro tip - Watch it first then comment it works even more satisfying!! 😂
Incredible vid boys unreal mileage!! So silverstone circuit to amalfi coast Italy 1409 miles…… 👀
Fantastic video as always Joe. Great guy even better UA-camr!
Great video. I had one of these 1.6tdi Passats for about 5 years (estate version). It was a good family car but I could never go back to such a small engine in such a big car. Driving is now much more enjoyable with a few more bhp.
failure in your challenge is a great ad for michellin e-primacy.. £160 a piece and clearly didn't improve your efficiency by 27%
How did you conclude that it didn't improve fuel consumption?
@@socas_nic people have hypermiled the Passat to 1600 miles - they failed to manage 1500..
The idea tyres can provide a 27 percent efficiency gain is total bollocks - unless you're comparing them to completely flat tyres that have been torn up with a knife.
@@robertbrown1338 fair, but who says that the croatians didnt use the same tire?Furthermore, in the video they even say that the route is not the most efficient, simply becuase of things like elevation. But other than that i completely agree with you, 27% seems outrageous and the real number is probably somewhere around 10%
@@redstar8516well.. if I make a video about weight loss - and make obscene claims about a sponsored product people would shit on me for lying about the product.
And I'm shitting on them for doing the same for these tyres.. sure they need a sponsor - I get it . but using it to claim some kind of efficiency black hole that is beyond the realms of real world physics is just slimy..
Get a carwow sponsorship or something legit, there is no need to be shilling for companies who want you to present their lies - the fact they didn't make even 1500 (regardless of the route or driving efficiency) doesn't exactly make the Michelin claims look particularly valid.
ti is just a rubber :))))))
For, to what I find as an incredibly dull topic, this is a great, engaging film! 👍🏼
years ago i had a Ford 2.9 litre Cosworth i used at least 1 full tank every 2 weeks not really travelling much further than work.
Love seeing Charles Leclerc enjoy his summer job!
Best thing is that you don't have to stop at a fuel station and see the exterior design of the Passat. Worst part is that the interior is so booring, there is the danger of falling asleep at the wheel. Good to have a passenger during a trip.
I started watching this thinking I wouldn't see the whole video.. instantly got hooked!! Awesome guys!!!
Amazing trip and result. Sadly this shows how politicians are so out of touch, this car wouldn't meet Edinburgh LEZ even though as you have shown it can return over 90mpg. Madness
This video is the exact reason why Europe wants to ban diesel engines… 3.2L/100km Is unheard of. Well done guys
It's not unheard of. Just look at the newest Yaris hybrid. I get 3l/100km easily in city driving.
@@EvzenEmanuel Key point being, city driving
I have a petrol engine in an opel astra 1.0 turbo and I do 1200km with 50liters.
@@Jouwtubethat’s an average of 4.1L/100km… Quite normal fuel consumption for a 1.0 engine… Nothing special here.
@@EvzenEmanuelI like how you mentioned „newest yaris” and „city driving”
First of all you could buy around 10 to 15 passat’s from this video for the price of a single new yaris.
That small engine will need to work hard to get it running, sounds like a lot of petrol to me.
why did they not continue this design with diesels, awesome video
Lying greedy politicians (mostly) - Glad you enjoyed it!
this exact model is the one that made DieselGate

because they sell too well (aka pass toyota), which means war to "international" market share. in short terms, germans (vag group is partially state owned) were making too much money for themselves and not paying extorsion fees to usa. sama reason, why now chinese brands (car, drones, phone you name it) getting all that bans around teh western hemisphere.

I LOVED this video. Well done lads. Did a similar trip from Birmingham to Copenhagen on one tank, VW Passat 2.0 Bluemotion. That was a little less than 1000 miles though I feel like I let the side down, could have probably done more.
I had one equal to this one 2.0tdi from 2011 as well and ooo what a car.
Never leave you stranded.
I miss that car now I have a B8 Passat but the B7 have a especial place in my heart.
I've a 1.6 Bluemotion diesel Golf that's 13 years old and can still return close to 900 miles from a 55lt tank which equates to 80mpg. They're brilliant motors if used right and motorway mile munching is what they were designed for , use them for school runs and shopping trips and you'll kill them.
I reckon if our roads were more suited to hypermiling I could easily improve on these figures.
Just going to grab a beer then I can sit back and enjoy your vlog 👍
900miles from 55L is 74MPG
@@Mr330d ....I was working on 5lts being a gallon , you want to be pedantic it's 4.5 which actually works out at 75 mpg so makes you look the fool 🤣 Your comment a bit sad really as these engines are brilliant and your jealousy makes us laugh

@@geebee6737 so you being wrong is my fault ? 🤣 if you do 900 miles on 55litres fuel that’s clearly 74.3MPG . Imagine calling me a fool 😂 resorting to childish name calling we all know what you are
Only talking about part of a tankfull in my case - and going by the car's computer - but I once managed to squeeze 95.2 miles out of a gallon in a mk3 Renault Clio DCI106 on the M1 in Staffordshire (north and back south through 40mph-controlled roadworks at night-time), my only ever real attempt at maximizing economy. The official average economy for this car was 61.4mpg, but I genuinely averaged more than 63mpg over 187,000 miles and 13 years of ownership
By absolute contrast, nowadays I run a mk6.5 Ford Fiesta Econetic, which is supposed to be capable of 85mpg overall, but which has struggled to better 70mpg over 50000+ miles.
Thanks for the very useful story
I’m absolutely lost for words, wow holy shit, what a journey, thanks guys this was the best challenge yet👍💪😉
Haha thank you, always worth the effort for feedback/comments like this 😁
I got half of this in my 2019 MB 220d 4matic. 200hp and 9 gears in summer with 4 people and a full boot. All on highways. So great job VW. :)
Yep it sure does, nothing will ever replicate a good diesel!
Imagine if EV didn't get the way and they continued to invest...100mpg+ would not be unrealistic
By design
I reckon this passat is easily capable of it if its just one occupant with minimal luggage and good driving conditions
vw did nothing more or less compared to the others.
2400 km in an old german car? no faults or breakdown that is nuts. congrats
Ur nuts, dumbest comment I've ever seen 😂
The 4cyl diesels were generally always really reliable. Combine that with a manual and MacPherson strut, and they are not much worse than a Toyota.
But people like their V6, wet clutches, DSGs, multilinks, air suspension... what else?
22 y old bora, 1.6 16v with over 200000 miles and still doing around 1700 miles every summer from uk to europe.
That was brilliant, well done both…..and the Passat 😊👏👏👏👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it
I wonder if some sort of ChipTuning would help with reducing fuel usage. I heard (in older, 1.9TDi) polish tuner dropped over 1L/100km with chiptuning alone.
Incredible! Outstanding film, gents
Cheers Harry!
An astonishing feat for sure. I have the 2012 Passat station wagon configuration with the 2.0L TDI. This is some seriously impressive stuff!
What an utterly stunning proof of the capacity of a "Modern" VW Diesel to astonish me with it's range & effectiveness.
Frankly I find your personal human endurance and grunt in taking on this task. Your human achievement was so impressive.
I can't believe I just spent 40 minutes watching two guys driving in a Passat. :)
Well done, guys and well done, Passat. :)
Why are we demonising these wonderful fuel efficient cars
Because our enlightened politicians think they kill children………funny, considering it was our enlightened politicians who encouraged us to buy diesel cars in the first place because they were fuel efficient.
@@simonhodgetts6530It’s all just for tax reasons. In 10 years who’s to say EVs won’t be taxed and demonized because their production is very polluting and generating the electricity for EVs also produces CO2
Because VW used defeat devices….

A full size car getting 94 mpg 🎉 wow! I went electric with a updated 2024 dual motor ID.4 AWD PRO S 340 HP and 500LBFT TQ and I love driving by the service stations lol
Impressive ! How do you explain the slight fluctuations in the water temp gauge? Isn't it supposed to stay locked on 90°C in a modern car?
Ohh no idea actually, I hadn't noticed it until now 🫣
Going downhill, mine does the same
at 1500rpms there really isn't any heat in the engine. When the thermostat opens and turns on the fan, the fan itself can cool it down as well. I had that happen on my petrol after a first warm up and the fan turns on when coasting so the gauge goes down a bit. And that on a sunny day and a straight road.
Waaaay back in the day I had a 1.3L Suzuki Gti Swift that used up to 18L/100km in the city fanging around and as low as 5L/100km on the freeway in 5th gear, that was the most AND least fuel efficient car I've ever owned lol 😂
