Omg I love this! The concept art is creepier and more emotional, I love his exaggerated expressions, he looks frightened as hell. It's very interesting to think that these drawings are meant to be base of a cartoon for children. I live for this.
It actually wasn't supposed to be just for kids; Disney wanted to expand its animated movies for adults, too. But producers wanted more lightheartedness (gargoyles) and marketing was directed toward children
This concept art makes Frollo so much more realistic. Rather than making him look like a villain through and through, the concept art depicts Frollo as a man dominated by fear more so than lust.
I guess the intention was originally for Esmeralda to be naked in the fire. I Know the MPAA forced the animators to adjust the Hellfire sequence to make it clear that she had clothes on.
Its funny. These original stills make it look like frollo was doing what was right ( in a twisted way of course, by biting the bullet) while the actual final version, he seems like he's concocting something sinister amongst his suffering.
Actually no. Take isis and terrorists for example. They think they are righteous amd are purifying the world. But they are wrong of course. Shedding the blood of innocents will only leave more room for criminals and monsters to multiply
aquamarine ancient soul you're correct, but isis and associated terrorists are a platform made up and funded by Saudi, Israeli, and western allies to destabilize the region, hence leaving the region clear for exploitation of natural resources like oil. They're not of Islam at all, just a bunch of evil people who murder the actual followers of this religion. Not in the name of Muhammad or Allah at all but money.
Isaiah Williams It's interesting because in the original book, Frollo was a kind and just figure, even to Quasimodo. It was only after he gained lust for Esmeralda did he turn into a villain.
I don't know if you have seen it but there is alos concept art version of The Bells of Notre Dame. While Frollo there looks at first scary (like, REAL scary), after he kills Quasimodo's, we get to have better look of his face, which looks pretty simmilar to this, so I assume they both are original ideas of animators. My best guess is that this scene was originally suppouse to show us that behind his stone- cold demeanor and dark robes, there is just old scared desperate man in brick madness. But as we all know, they changed Frollo little bit more stone faced in the end.
Thank you so much for putting this together, this is incredible to see! These concept drawings are works of art in and of themselves. It's so intense, 2:40 onward where he's actually scratching the walls in aggravation. Also it almost looks like Esmeralda is stealing his soul at 1:47. So many incredible pictures. These concept works come off as a lot more mature than the animated scene in the film (which is saying something, the scene is epic). I just really love the fluid motion and expression in Frollo's caricature. It's dark, demented, and everything that makes a scene like this. But seriously, these frames need to be in a gallery side by side, these truly are so much more than concept drawings, this is art.
This song was one of the darkest Disney song ever sung . I can remember being so scared and just shocked of frollo feeling the vision of Esmeralda . Fire and sins share the emotional impact of love and faith
Yes! He’s my favourite Claude Frollo, his voice is so unique, also the only people still alive that I think could be decent live-action Frollos are Jeremy Irons and Ian McKellen, though if Peters Cushing was born a bit later and was alive I think he’d be perfect, at least physically, vocally none of them can replace Tony Jay.
As a student who learned concept art, these look like they spent way too much time making. The whole point of concept art is to make it quick and move onto the next shot. But this is the early 90s. They can do whatever they want
These are so fuckin emotional!! Omg I love this so much I'm literally obsessed with the way he's drawn here, the faces, the postures the contrast just everything is amazing here
0:39 - 0:48 Here's Something: Esmeralda initially didn't have clothes on in this scene, and just had the fire covering up her... key areas, it was changed when that almost got the film a PG, and here's the proof. Yeah good luck getting that outta your head.
This video made me terrified of this sequence. Like holy shit. I’d have watched Hunchback of Notre Dame if it was as scary as this is. (I commented a year ago and then forgot about this video)
I like the original drawings of Hellfire. Hellfire is my second favourite villain song after my first favourite villain song, You're Only Second Rate from The Return of Jafar.
If only Pepper Ann was released a year earlier the episode that showed with Flubber in cinemas as a “sneak peek” should’ve played with this movie to act as a breather before… well…
I could imagine if Imhotep from the mummy movies with Brendan Fraser sang this song and my grandmama never liked frollo especially when she warned me about him

They outlined her clothes more so the movie wouldn’t be PG instead of just G 😂
@@Sophia_Grace_12_17 should had been PG anyways
The story board has like 12 frames and they made into a cinematic masterpiece. Hats off to that team.
No the full storyboard would have much more than this.
@@starrysky330 yeah, here's the full storyboard. ua-cam.com/video/NXpvXPjhdVg/v-deo.html
I know Concept art should not be perfect, but Frollo's design in this one is actually pretty good.
Its funny. These original stills make it look like frollo was doing what was right ( in a twisted way of course, by biting the bullet) while the actual final version, he seems like he's concocting something sinister amongst his suffering.
***** I meant the animation makes him look like he's enjoying what he does in the final version
So, you are telling me: that the darkes villain song that Disney ever made was supposed to be EVEN DARKER!?
"You know I am a righteous man...."
Hmm.... the word "righteous" must have meant something different back then....
Spencer Higham Amen
Actually no. Take isis and terrorists for example. They think they are righteous amd are purifying the world. But they are wrong of course. Shedding the blood of innocents will only leave more room for criminals and monsters to multiply

Well, who knows? I mean, the movie (and the novel it was based on) is set in the year 1482.
The people who did this scene would later direct the Firebird segment in Fantasia 2000
It all makes sense to me now.
Frollo looks much more cartooney and innocent in some of these. I like that. But the Final version is still most amazing.

Tony Jay and this character Oh, perfection you cannot deny it even if a live action film you can’t replace that voice
Man, they really kept a lot of this in tact for the final version.
I keep staring at that pic at 2:50.
GAH. I LOVE THE COLORS AND EVERYTHING. D;
2:50
The storyboards succeed in somehow making Hellfire even creepier which I didn't even think was possible...
I love how terrified he looks. Like all that fear for his immortal soul is finally leaking out.
Concept art are very creepy D:
1:46 bam cunnalingus!
Rainbow Star Productions woah! I did not see that coming.
Omg. I can see why the MPAA would have had a problem with this!
As a student who learned concept art, these look like they spent way too much time making. The whole point of concept art is to make it quick and move onto the next shot. But this is the early 90s. They can do whatever they want

RIP Tony Jay
1933-2006
thankyou for putting this together
Beata Maria, you know I'm so much purer than the common, vulgar, weak licentious crowd!
I always thought how it was... it's so stunning! I love Frollo's expressions and movements. ❤️🤔
Thanks for sharing with us. This is beautiful to see! (Except that I like it that I think they made him hotter in the final version. XD )
I know you wrote this comment years ago, but I agree with you! Frollo is pretty hot
I love how this account is dedicated to Frollo, I love him
2 things, one, best villian song i ever heard, 2nd, great movie!!
0:39 - 0:48 Here's Something: Esmeralda initially didn't have clothes on in this scene, and just had the fire covering up her... key areas, it was changed when that almost got the film a PG, and here's the proof. Yeah good luck getting that outta your head.

Whenever I hear this song, it sounds like he's singing about himself turning evil, but in a poem way.
That was great. What pity they made it milder in the final version!
I like the original drawings of Hellfire. Hellfire is my second favourite villain song after my first favourite villain song, You're Only Second Rate from The Return of Jafar.
Frollo looks slightly different here...?
DukeOfYork because it’s concept art
Fool
They don’t add the finer details until later.
its a storyboard what do you expect
Yo if esmeralda actually died on the pire because of him, wouldnt he be heartbroken? Like damn it was me or death and she actually died rip
No. Judge Frollo is a sociopath.
Love and lust are two different things. He was clearly lusting after her.
No, he lust her but she was still a gypsy
He really didn't care about her as a person he saw her as a object and a witch
He looks like Anton Ego lol
If only Pepper Ann was released a year earlier the episode that showed with Flubber in cinemas as a “sneak peek” should’ve played with this movie to act as a breather before… well…
Why does this remind me of the TF2 comics so much?
He looks like a white walker of GoT
А ведь тут видно, что Клод реально боится. Он убегает, пугается, просит защиты

Honestly, is it just me, or does Frollo look almost exactly like Yen Sid (only without the beard) in the concept art?!
0:51 Will You People Just Shut up We're Death hearing that, nobody wants to Hear Hell Fire 🔥 Song Anymore!!!!!👿
0:42
:38 is he like Rasputin :D :49 xD WTF :54 xD :55 xD :57 is he dead? xD 1:03 ok 1:05 :l :110 looks like zombie
Benx303 according to Rainbow Star Production's comment, look at 1:46.
