Mesoamerica did not have a western conception of good vs evil. She is more comparable to pre-monotheistic hebrews who worshipped Baal instead of Yahweh
it's funny how many little pieces of kingdom of the sun are lying around new groove! the palace on the hill has got to be a kingdom of the sun design, it's so polished and developed
This gives her antagonism towards Kuzco so much more context, too. I love the idea that the Yzma we ended up with is just on the VERGE of being a horrifying sorceress, or maybe USED to be, but at present has to make do with sloppy mad science
Why do I feel like her original ending would be like the death of Dr Facilier from princess and the frog where maybe the evil spirits, the very ones whom she worked for to make her magic even stronger to where she’s almost unstoppable, drag her down to the underworld for failing them? It kinda ties in her line in the emperors new groove- a cruel irony. She depended on them too much and it was her downfall. Anybody else??? Just me? Okay.
Also why does her scene with all the “zombies” give me “be prepared” vibes? This is really cool though because she was this mega powerful Necromancer/sorceress, but it also makes me sad knowing now that we were robbed of the potential of this. Like don’t get me wrong I love emperors new groove it’s hilarious, but like if they could have put scenes like this in it would have been even better. Also sting writing all the music for the movie and it all getting scrapped except the end credits song, and the fact that he (and our queen Eartha Kitt who finally got her chance to shine once more) wasted time for a really good song like this that didn’t even get used is disheartening
If Disney wants to milk the nostalgia train, rather than creating live action copies, why not dust off the ideas left on the cutting room floor and tell a new story with old characters? I'd love to see an alternate Yzma- centered movie.
That's an actual idea waiting to happen, basically Cruella but with Yzma and her true ambition Hopefully not live action but it's more likely to be that
I wouldn't mind Kingdom of the Sun as a live-action remake/musical. You could even got Patrick Warburton to play Kronk, but you really can't recast Yzma if you did that.
Unfortunately, today's Disney isn't as bold as it once was. He still changes the songs in the remakes so that they are “correct” and so that the villains don’t offend anyone (seriously? That’s how it is?), and this is absurd. I would love to watch a cartoon about Yzma with this song. We could have been shown the story from Yzma's point of view, who spent her youth raising Kuzco as shown in the animatic, and how she had to temporarily rule until Kuzco could rule himself. Yzma remains the same villain, but with a clear mind that perhaps Kuzco's father didn't have or something like that. Now Disney has driven itself into a hole of disgusting quality content. We can only hope for the legacy of the past, which falls into the hands of devoted fans of the great Disney that it used to be. I don’t know English and that’s why I use a translator, forgive me if you don’t fully understand my text. I just really wanted to share my opinion.
Now the fact that Yzma's color scheme was deep purples and blacks makes a LOT of sense and I love it. Wish this backstory was kept in. Yzma is lowkey the best Disney villain.
I like how baby Kuzco/Manco is portrayed as the “little ray of sunshine that robbed her of her youth” like she had to spend her best years caring for him. We know she raised Kuzco in the final version and Manco was the physical representation of the sun in the beta, so this seems like a wordplay worthy of a Disney movie.
Except her raiseing Kusco was literally because she orchestrated his parent's deaths so she could turn him into a puppet ruler. [And intentionally bad so she could take over without everyone revolting about it] Then he fired her.
@@raikaria3090 Almost 2 decades of scheming thrown away. Was it as casually funny in the finished movie or was it more "Begone from the court!" in the concept phase I wonder?
@@raikaria3090 Wasnt it shown in the TV show that the father left on a long journey and apointed Yzma to raise kuzco until he returns (IF he ever returns)
As someone who is ridiculously fascinated by the complex concepts of potions and alchemy ( while accepting its mostly fake ), I would pay money to see this. Not very much money because I don't have a lot but cash is cash, no matter how much is in the stash.
I always like when stories justified necromancers as people who want to learn how to control death to defeat life. (Aka the end result of life is to die so in order to prevent the process of that learn Necromancy in an attempt to live/stop aging forever) it rarely works out life they hope.
What’s funny is that Yzma’s position of priestess means she has to make offerings and grand speeches about and to the Sun. That must’ve be painful for her
indeed. but once the sun and kuzco is dead, she can happily rule a world of darkness and monsters. her revenge upon the sun would be ruthless and without mercy if she had her way.
I can just see her face after being told she has a sun worshipping ceremony today and she just puts on a strained smile and says "Oh, GOODIE! Who doesn't love basking in the sun's ... glorious... light? All. Day. LONG! Krunk, get me a cactus juice. AND MAKE IT A DOUBLE!"
Incan religion was surprisingly flexible actually. Incans were allowed to worship whoever they wanted, with one single caveat; they must also worship Inti; the Sun God; and acknowledge him as above all over gods. You may worship whatever Gods you like; as long as Inti is above all others. So an Incan family may worship an ancestor as their personal protector god for example, as long as they acknowledge that Inti is superior to their ancestor god. Or a city might worship some other god of the Incan pantheon [such as a mountain god; or a river god, or even Supai/Supay], as long as they acknowledge Inti as superior. Think of Inti kind of like Zeus to the Greeks. Zeus was the leader of the Gods. The big honcho. For example; at a temple; the Hawka [idol] of Inti must be the largest and in prime position. To do otherwise was blasphemous and heresy, and amounted to putting that other God as "above" Inti. [This would usually result in the Preist being punished, up to such wonderful things as being thrown into snake pits to die; and offending Hawka being destroyed] But as long as you do not challenge or offend Inti, you can worship whatever else you want. Really; if the Incans were still around, they'd probobly get on quite well with Hindus, as their two religions could easily co-exist in a syncretic manner. [Not to mention Shinto. The Shintoists and Incans could easily agree that Amerterasu and Inti are the same; both being sun gods; just the gods revealed themselves in different ways to each society or something] Incans could literally worship Hindu gods alongside Inti and other Incan gods. Because that's how the Incan religion functioned.
@@raikaria3090 sounds about right, but still the comedy factor of yzma HATING that its her job to hold inti above all others, when she much prefers Supay to be the superior god. at least then she would not have to deal with the way the sun seems to have stolen her promised eternal youth. plus...in some of the other animated clips we have seens she HATES the sun to the point of even taking shelter behind the emperor's cloak to be out of the sun.
I like how the line "Who to blame, who the one, who to curse? You know the only one to blame would be my enemy, The Sun" also refers to "The Son" as in the Son to the Emperor who she spent most her life raising and The Sun who ruined her looks with it's rays
@osmanyousif7849 disagree. Despite the fact that this song was removed from the movie, Disney proved not to be totally stupid and released the track anyway. Now there are numerous animated versions of the clip and singers are adding it to their repertoire. I've even heard a version in Hungarian.
I don’t know why, Yzma’s always hit special for me. I don’t know if it’s just Eartha Kitt’s voice or being half of one of the funniest villain duos in Disney’s history. Feels like a while since we’ve had a proper villain song. Can’t really do one when your main antagonist is a toxic home life.
indeed. disney villains should be villains in the kind of bombastic flair kind. the kind where they get their music number to REALLY go to town with stealing the show. when villains are missunderstood or the product of poor actions or choices, its not the same kind of flavor as villains who decide to be evil and LOVE IT. they can have sympathetic moments, but they should be primarily fun, threatening and loving every second of their being evil. Villain music numbers are a chance for the villain to proclaim to the audience and the universe, "Yes i am evil, yes i am the villain, yes i am going to reveal my plan to you. No...i will not repent. THIS IS WHO I AM!" of course, it does not always work, but a villain who remains so for most of the runtime without an axis change is really fun. Yzma we sympathise with for being stuck with kuzco for so long, but it does not change that she is still planning the destruction of the sun, murder, and more because...she is old and feels cheated out of what she feels owed by the world. all those years she spent raising and looking after a kid who became a brat, now considered robbed and she wants to eclipse the world in darkness(and likely monsters if the inca belief about the world without the sun was anything like the aztecs) so she can have it all back.
Yzma: I'll turn him into a flea, a harmless, little flea, and then I'll put that flea in a box, and then I'll put that box inside of another box, and then I'll mail that box to myself, and when it arrives... I'll smash it with a hammer! And then to keep me from aging I'll use my magic and sorcery to blot out the sun for all eternity! Kronk: What was that last part? Yzma: Hmm? *Flips through her index cards* Oops, got an old plan mixed up with this one! *Tosses some cards away*
Couldn’t agree more! Not to say that this isn’t absolutely amazing, but I’d love to see this sequence storyboarded/animated as the animators originally intended!
What's interesting is that by the song and visuals Izma wanted Immortality but not just for her but for her father too. She was willing too share it with those she cared about which most Immortality seekers don't want to selfishly hording it for themselves.
Yzma could have been one of the greatest disney villains, and instead she became... Okay, she's still one of the greatest disney villains, but you know what I mean.
You have to wonder how much it pissed off the Disney execs that we ended up with TENG instead of Empire of the Sun. Maybe it WAS the fact that Yzma was so heavily themed after a Thelemic Satanist. Other villains came *close* but none flew, pun frankly intended, so close to the sun.
There's a lot of stuff implied by the visuals that gets lost if you only hear the song. Like, when Yzma talks about gaining remission from time, it shows her watching her dad grow old and miserable in the service of the king (who, if I recall correctly, was supposed to be a living representative of the sun god in this story). When she talks about "every little ray of sunshine" it shows her caring for the king's son (Kuzco in the final version). I's the same thing: she's spending her prime taking care of someone else's child. From the final version, we know that he fires her, so she wastes her best years on some ungrateful brat who dismisses her on a whim (as she sees it). And the final shots show her surrounded by animated mummies all praising and maybe worshiping her - perhaps implying that she wants to be appreciated for all her hard work. It adds layers to her character. She isn't just motivated by the loss of beauty, it seems more that she's mourning that she never got to enjoy it because she was being forced to be the parent of someone else's child. She doesn't just want her beauty back, she wants back all those wasted years. "Snuff out the light" is code for getting revenge on the person she blames for stealing her time - who is something like the earthly vessel of the sun god. It does so much with what was just a throwaway line and a joke in the final version.
right on! i wanted to give a bit more depth to the idea since there was a lot to work with! some aspects i added myself (like the stuff with her dad and loathing inti) and some were inspired by the original story pitch and mythology, but I just didn't want it to be all about 'womanly vanity' for a female villain. but a lot of things I added myself ended up being accidentally in line with the original vision and mythos anyway apparently, which is very cool to find out!
@@SaveDisk I would be really curious to see what the guy who originally pitched the movie thinks of this, if he were to see it. It might add some fascinating insight.
Sadly the problem with the actual plot the orig director thought of is said to be too much... There are ALOT to unpack with the original plot... From Prince and the Pauper to a love triangle to Yzma's sufferings to the original myth... Well they had a hard time following what is the actual plot that they scrapped it up and replaced the director just to compete to Road to El Dorado... They don't want a Sinbad heavy plot but a comedy so🤷
@@cheezemonkeyeater The problem is that Kingdom of the Sun is an unfocused mess that didn't know what it wanted to be. New Groove Knows exactly what it wants to be. The good news is that Roger Allers did create the Prophet in 2014.
I know technically Disney doesn’t have a 2D animation department anymore, but it would be awesome if they made an actual music video for this song - in memory of Eartha Kitt and her fantastic performance here, release it on her birthday maybe. 🤩
I get the feeling that Yzma would've been a FORMIDABLE enemy if they went ahead with KOTS. Her vendetta against the god of the sun would be far more deep than just beauty or power, it's revenge for the sun taking her beloved father away from her. Goddamn I love the emperor's new groove but we could've had an AMAZING Yzma based film with KOTS.
the fact she had an army of the undead and monsters/ghouls/ creepy crawlies with no (visible) strings attached makes her better than dr facilier, maybe even the horned king (who needed the cauldron to make his army). We were truly robbed
@@danielcurren2119 Yeah, he magical prowess seemed to be on the same level as Maleficent and Ursula, no strings attached to them, no outside help, just pure, raw, unadultered magic
I hadn't realized until this storyboard how genius Yzma's enemy being the sun (and also the title "Kingdom of the Sun") is when you read it as a pun on "son". Kuzco/Manco is literally the son of the emperor, and therefore Yzma's enemy. He was unfairly born into inheriting power that caused Yzma stress and took time away from her youth, and he's a lazy jerk who probably wouldn't be in that position if he wasn't a son of someone important. As I know that the original movie would have involved a Prince and the Pauper plot where Pacha (a peasant who's probably more deserving of a position of leadership) ends up temporarily becoming royalty while Kuzco/Manco becomes a llama, that whole "son" thing probably would have tied into that too. Just because someone is lucky enough to be born with privilege, it doesn't mean they should loom over everything like the sun.
The Incas (not the people but the "emperors") were considered sons of Inti (The sun), directly related to The sun god, So pretty much when she means snuff out the light she means literally.
There’s also the idea of the sun and Yzma’s beauty and aging. The sun ages you and gives you wrinkles which is why many wear sunscreen religiously. Yzma’s idea of beauty rests on looking young.
Not to mention Manco was, for all intents and purposes, literally the sun as well. His birthmark held some of Inti's essence that allowed the sun to keep Supai sealed beneath the earth, so Yzma's plan was to kill Manco and destroy the seal before the eclipse came about. Thus, the main crux of her plan is to kill the son which would kill the sun.
@@z2yn It could be that she would rejuvenate in the song, starting as the Yzma we all know and slowly becoming more young as the song and magic snuff up the sun.
What I gather from this song is that Yzma wasn't always horrible - but the death of her father left her alone in the world. Without her father's affections she relied on her beauty to gain the attention she craved, but when she was appointed to raise Kuzco she grew to resent both him and the royal family as her duties as care provider and royal mortician left her too busy for her attention seeking. By the time Kuzco was grown and her duty laxed, age had finally caught up to her and she could no longer get the attention she desired. At the same time, Yzma was an effective but cold hearted caretaker of Kuzco - causing the boy to grow into the callous monster she perceived the royal family to be. Presumably this culminates in her dismissal and rebellion. The likely end to this is Kuzco going on a journey of self discovery to become the ruler he should be, in the process reuniting Yzma with her deceased father who talks her down from her destructive path. The two follow the setting sun into the underworld with Yzma taking on the aspect of the little girl she was so long ago, the film concluding with Yzma finding her "eternal youth" in the afterlife with the company of her father.
While I was learning skin care for cosmetology I learned that UV rays from the sun account for 90% of visible aging. So this song is not only fun and awesome but somewhat factual, the sun really did take her youth. PS everyone make sure to wear sunscreen if you wanna stay looking young!(even if it doesn’t seem very sunny you’re still getting UV exposure so wear it every day!)
We're talking about Peru in the XIV century. While nowadays it definitely can't be said the same, back then UV light was not an issue. Good and strong ozone layer protecting us back then, baby.
In reality, you're right about the Yzma's motivation to block the sun in the story of Kingdom of the sun: She was a beautiful woman, but the sun, literally the sun, "robbed" her beauty, hence the ritual to bring Supai on to recover it. Yzma in this version was a vain woman and hated the God of Sun because of that reason. Even in the story Yzma would get her purpose and would become young for a little time but ultimately she would have lost and died wrinkling to ashes. English isn't My first language, then I'm sorry if I made mistakes with My grammar.
Aging is nothing bad. It's a natural process. Please stop making people paranoid and making it seem like aging is something monstrous. Besides, you need UV light to generate Vitamin D anyway.
Yeah maybe as a different film this would work. Would have to change Ezmas design with someone else though since she was used in Emperors new groove. Also may have to change the time period a bit? Maybe the Wari or Tiwanaku? Although the Wari makes sense because they occupied the location ironically called Cuzco. Its the combination of these two territories which eventually become Inca.
I adore the design you've done with young Yzma taking care of the baby Emperor. Also the imagery of seeing her father "lose" to time really adds depth to her motivations, more than the shallow "I wanna be pretty", it gives a revenge side against the one enemy who took her father from her.
Lack of faith from the executives at the time, plus a perceived "fatigue" towards grand scale animated musicals after the Disney Renaissance. I really wish we got to see this in its entirety....
@@tannerbruning868 They can't. They didn't finish the plot, and thus didn't have all of Eartha Kitt's lines recorded. It'd be a crime to let someone else play Yzma.
TBF Emperors new groove is one, if not my favourite Disney movie purely for the humour element and of course Yzma. But, for the sequel they should have just done the original plot instead of the direct to home video sequel..
Huge overhauls like this aren’t done in big expensive productions just because. I'm sure that the crew did their best while developing The Kingdom of the Sun and produced some amazing material during that time, but that "something" must have been missing.
As a Peruvian for me it’s so sad that we couldn’t see kingdom of the sun, I love the original plot so much cuz they keep a lot of our Peruvian culture. So thankful for this animatic 🥹 it’s obvious that we are not going to see this never in an Disney movie anymore, I really love your work ❤️❤️
The plot is good from the start. If they hadn’t made “the prince and the pauper”, he ruins everything and Yzma’s hatred of the sun because of old age, something better could have been laid out.
@@Sindicat-soldat well, the MAIN PLOT isnt the big thing lets be honest. But having such amazing villian and tons of references to Peruavian civilizations (aas someone who likes that kind of stuff being from Peru), I honestly didnt mind the simple concept as long as they would keep this level of respect to our roots
Yzma's look when she says "Lying" is about as murderous as one could get. Truly wanted this song fully animated but alas. Maybe one day Disney animators will give us this beauty
Oh man good spot! Likewise, whether canon or not I love the idea that she first wanted immortality not for herself but to save her father's life and failing to do so strengthened her resolve to conquer death.
you did an amazing job. hope Kingdom of the Sun gets more animatics just like this one. congrats for creating what would be the best scene in the movie haha
In _Kronk's New Groove_ ,they had a whole subplot involving Yzma being a snake oil saleswoman peddling "fountain of youth" potions to the elderly. I kinda wish they kept this song or at least incorporated more of her backstory
That could have been better than just killing her off by just turning her into a bunny and then making a vulture snatch her from that bridge, only to get eaten alive by the baby vultures
As much as I love Emperor's New Groove, the Kingdom of Sun sounds like a true Disney Renaissance film. It could've been a crown jewel for early 2000s disney, with so much cultural and even mythological background to enrich the story. Its a true shame we never got it.
If i could travel to alternate timelines, i would want to see the one where Kingdom of the Sun reached its full potential. I love Emperor's New Groove, but i would have loved to see Kingdom of the Sun
This face at 2:54 Is such an iconic disney villain face with those classic crazy eyes of sorts, filled with mischief and sadism, standing out along with that nefarious grin, like popping out of the darkness in the scene And the fact that it goes with the best instrumental cresendo is just So good
1:20 seeing Kuzco represent the sun here gives me an idea. if disney ever decides to reboot this movie, they could still have use song if they have the emperor be a representative of the sun/a sun god. Yzma is then given 2 motivations for getting rid of Kuzco: taking the throne AND superstitious vengeance against the sun for taking her youth (also possibly having to raise Kuzco aged her, again featured here).
glad that subtext came across - i agree! generally the 'kingdom of the sun' and inti being the patron deity of the inca state really gives an association with the royal family.
Now THIS is how ya reboot a movie!!!! Look at what was left on the cutting room floor and really think of how the movie could have evolved differently.
Love this characterization for Yzma. I of course love we got, but if im being honest shes just funny evil woman to me, which is good. But this short song paints a un-appreciated talented genius battling her innate mortal fear of time and aging while also adding even more reason for her to hate kuzco. Also her appearing to genuinely love, admire, and mourn her father is very sweet.
As peruvian, I love how you represented part of my culture. Wiracocha was the most important god in pre columbian cultures and Inca's culture, I loved seeing the figures of the god. And the representation of Kuzco as Inti's son. I have no words about how beautiful the animatic is. My dream to see this scene complete is finally true. Thank you
i'm genuinely really touched to hear that! i had trouble researching these gods because there wasn't much information online, and a lot of the background stuff i took from new groove (which i have no idea of its cultural accuracy), so it's really neat to hear it was somewhat relevant! I wanted to represent kuzco's royal family as being synonymous with the sun, the kingdom and inti for storytelling purposes, but I think kuzco being intis son is also a really nice interpretation - i like both! (that's the fun thing with playing with symbolism, seeing how people interpret it!)
(On re reading my notes/research you're totally right, the emperors were believed to be direct descendents of Inti-- my bad! I can't remember if that was what inspired me to associate them thematically or if I came to a similar conclusion on my own by happy accident?)
From a quick Wikipedia read it says that he's God of time specifically by virtue of moving the sun across the sky? I'm taking it with a grain of salt because Wikipedia but if that's true then that adds another tie between her hatred of time and the sun. If I remember I'll look into it some more and try to verify if that's right or not.
@@TheWilderCat I'm not sure about God of time, but I know about Illapa ( god of thunder and lightning, rain, war and sometimes the weather) He was really important for inka's culture, Viracocha, his son Inti and Illapa were a trinity, Don't forget about Supay, the god of death, he has a rivalry with Inti, that's why in the original film, Yzma made a deal with Supay to destroy Inti. Oh, and there was a leyend about Wuallallo Carhuincho, god of fire, one day he found a lost boy, so he decided to eat him, however this kid was Inti. I love The Emperor's New Groove to pieces, but somehow I really wish we could have gotten both it and Kingdom of the Sun. Both seem incredible, and while we never got to see Snuff Out the Light animated, this fan recreation incorporating some of the animation that does survive from that version is brilliant! Wonderful job!
Yeah. I do think you could probably approximate it if you merged the version we have with the Road to Eldorado. I think the Kingdom of the sun was the central idea that got split into those 2 separate movies.
@@urahara64360 Both The Emperor's New Groove and The Road to El Dorado are two of my favorite movies of all time, so I likely would have adored Kingdom of the Sun.
1:10 "It was always my ambition, to use papa's tuition, to gain some small remission from the vagaries of time." Man, I just love this line. It flows so well off the tongue and just flexes vocabulary at you while perfectly encapsulating her backstory in a semi-relatable way.
Nice...sucks this song was never animated at least, and was unused, the late Eartha Kitt had a voice we all loved and Yzma is one of the best female Villans Disney ever made and her song is one of the best. Thank you for this i hope Disney release the full scenes in the future, Yzma embodies aged gracefully!
Well current Yzma probably not so much (more memeable definitely), but it sounds and looks like the older version would’ve been way better, which sucks because I’m a sucker for a good villain.
I know its only a short little bit that barely gives you a peak at there relationship but I like the idea that Yzma had a good relationship with her dad, I always like it when evil characters are shown to be capable of love for someone important to them, it shows that they know what love is and have felt it and expressed it but still they embrace evil.
The way he gave her a piggyback ride after she showed a talent for necromancy was adorable, and kinda heartbreaking when she had to watch him age & decay, growing old & miserable, clearly their relationship remaining strong until his death.
I love how 01:14-01:18 imply that at first Yzma was also driven by her adored father getting older and frailer and wanted this "small remission" for him, but didn't manage to make it in time. Also that she doesn't blame _Kuzko_ - she blames the Sun god!
Can someone send this to Andreas Deja? He designed and was the main animator for Yzma. He did every single animation of her in this deleted scene (also did Scar, Hercules, Gaston). He left the project when they decided to completely change the story and he moved over to Lilo and Stitch, giving the character of Yzma to Dale Baer. Andreas has an active blog and I’m sure he would love this. Anyways u did an amazing job and brought so much life to the song with your animated segments, I’m obsessed 🥹
someone actually did! I was stunned beyond words! i'm not sure if it was my animatic he saw or another, but he said he liked it? so, whoever's it was, it's just really heartwarming knowing he's out there watching peoples lil' projects! (and thank you for your very kind words, i'm very flattered!!!

Snuff out the light Claim your right to a world of darkness Snuff out the light, neophytes Of a world of darkness Snuff out the light Claim your right to a world of darkness Snuff out the light here tonight Vespers of eternal darkness Spiraling in circles through the night Creatures of beguiling blackness No more squinting in the light Bats and owls and coiled sea dragons Crocodile and carrion beasts Swirling in the growing darkness Join us in the coming feast Spectre, wraith, and apparition Spirit, demon, phantom shade Salamander, serpents, dog-faced devils Dance and watch the dying sunlight fade
Actually, I think "vespers" is really "apparitions." I've listened several times now, and the word spoken clearly has three syllables not two. Additionally, "vespers" means prayers, which breaks with the rest of the verse invoking the many creatures of the dark.
This is amazing, it was very on point the she called baby Kuzco/Manco "little ray of sunshine" since he, as the Inca, was supposed to be a descendant of Inti (Sun god of the Incas), so it fits. I wish we could see more, I feel like this plot could have had more influence by Inca mythology, including more about the gods and some other cultural aspects.
This is fascinating, specifically because in Incan culture the Sun was a HUGE religious figurehead- which is why it shows up EVERYWHERE in art and carvings and things. so this isn't just Yzma saying she doesn't want to be old and blames time for her age, or even her supposed use of necromancy going against a less malicious magic. It's literally her declaring war on the closest thing to Capital G God, and every good thing he represented for the Inca
This applies to, more or less, all religions and ancient theologies. Nearly 100% of them based their cultural principals on the actions of celestial objects.
This is fantastic and makes me miss these missed opportunities in Kingdom of the Sun even more. An absolutely spectacular storyboard matching with the quality of the song. (Also are those inspirations from Anastasia’s “In the Dark of the Night” at the end?”
@@SaveDisk Anastasia gets flak because it's not historically accurate, but that would mean giving the film an R rating which is unlikely. It also has a spin off film called Bartok the Magnificent.
The Kingdom of the Sun would have been a classic if the Disney executives saw all the work and gave it the respect it deserved. Eartha Kitt is too much of a powerhouse for her vocals and character to get cut as much as she did. Plus, Sting was doing the WHOLE score. He is a talent in his own right and this song is a divine example of it. In a better world or parallel universe, this musical epic could have existed.
Maybe. But even with all the Disney renaissance combined I still enjoyed emperor new groove even more. This didn't change back when I was a kid or now when I am an adult. Kingdom of the sun definitely would be a straight down grade for me in terms of enjoyment. Meh the disney "masterpieces" might be kinda grand but honestly really boring.
When you remember that Disney cut one of the best villain songs/stories from one of their best movies that not only added to the story, but explained Yzma’s motivations, intelligence, and skill as well as the kindness and humanity she had/has
What makes a compelling villain isn’t making them evil, or even all that sympathetic- but that at our darkest moment, when the hero has lost their way, and all seems hopeless- we see for one terrifyingly enticing moment why they chose this path, and ours was doomed. Yzma in this version isn’t fighting against the royal family or society at large, she’s rebelling against death itself. Who cares if one spoiled brat or one whole village has to perish? Any power she gains is power to overcome what we all desire.
(Chef's Kiss) You really did this lost gem of a song some Justice. I especially Love this frame {1:18} Because that implies that her Motivations for eternal youth were influenced by her father's death. Also {3:04} always my favorite part of the song, You translated it into Visuals so Well, All the Creatures and Monsters and Incan Demons. FINALLY This song got its time in the SUN (pun-intended).
@@Ami-ut2us exactly, her looks are the surface reason she wants to snuff up the sun, when in reality is that she wants eternal youth due to her fear of death, fear that was born when she saw her father grow old and wither away. It almost makes her a simpatetic villain.
Honestly disney could still utilize Eartha Kitt's old song, in a re-imagining of the original villain. Like have the movie scenes prior to this song show her in a public places, constantly in shade, covered in darkening clothes, umbrella, etc. Then this song would happen after getting accidentally hit by sunlight, while talking to one of the main characters. Change the original plot, heck could even be something similar to a detective drama. Like a sherlock holmes, meets macebre sort of thing. The voice actor for the non singing role would either be cree summer *She did do a decent Vexus from My life as a teenage robot*, or my personal choice "Mary McDonald-Lewis" When she voiced Veronica Deane on archer, I was like "Sounds like Eartha slightly".
Considering the large gap of Disney villain songs over the years , plus the fact this song is awesome and gives a lot of insight to the characters. This being cut is nothing less than tragic. This looks like it would have been fun to animate and see on the big screen.
Even deleted scarped songs are better than today’s villain songs 😭 This was glorious. You did such a great job giving us a glimpse of what coukd have been
I like that it also gives a back story to Yzma. From what I understood, she was very close to her dad, and since she took care of Kuzco (well Manko in this case) since his birth, she seems to blame him for wasting her youth. In a way you can even pity her because she's an old woman who regrets the time she lost and is afraid of the inevitable day of her death.
“I could squeeze myself with glee, the promises you’ve made to me!” 3:32 If that’s what Supai looks like, I can’t imagine he’ll keep whatever promises he made to Yzma.
Description reads "I only own my own rough artwork dispersed inbetween". Yet imagine the original animator who made those rough drafts, only for the whole premise to be scrapped and all their work made for nothing. Consigned to their ideas of this epic villain song being thrown away. Only for another artist to pick up the scraps and continue the idea, make something beautiful out of them. Idk man it makes me emotional. I think whoever animated the original snippets would be thrilled and honored by this.
I'd like to think that some of this original design, like Yzma conjuring spirits and shadows, ended up being basis for Dr. Facilier. There are a lot of similarities in the creatures if you think about it.
Imagine if Disney decided to make a live-action version of The Kingdom of the Sun instead of a live-action reboot of The Emperor's New Groove? I wouldn't mind giving it a shot.
If they kept this plot, yzma would have been so much more terrifying. It makes me sad that this was scrapped because it is such an amazing song and story
“Who to blame? Who the one? Who to curse? You know the only one to blame would be my enemy the sun”. Damn I can’t believe someone as cool as Yzma would play League of Legends.
I love what Emperor’s New Groove ended up being A LOT, yet I still wish we could have seen what Kingdom of the Sun would’ve been. This song has stuck in my mind for years as evidence that it could’ve been something truly phenomenal, and I’m glad you took the time to bring it to life.
Can we just appreciate the fact that even though this song was cut from the final movie that we still got a fully finished version of it? It’s nice to at least see what could have been, even if it didn’t ultimately come to fruition
Yo we were completely robbed of an yzma song I’m miffed. Eartha Kitt is amazing. Makes me love Yzma even more. You can tell she really gave it her all with this one
Stunning! I love Kingdom of The Sun, even though i still ended up loving The Emperors New Groove A part of me wishes disney would just release all of the animation that was done for the first movie, because it is simply one of the most facinating pieces of lost media Thank you so much for this ❤ It looks amazing. You drew the storyboard very well aligned with the small existing animation, and it finally makes it look like such a full scene!
This could have been an amazing new story besides what was given. Yzma in this version was a woman surrounded by death with her only source of love being her loving father, who lost his life to age serving a spoiled emperor deemed to be the beaming sun. She eventually served the Emperor too, and it robbed her of her youth and life, causing her to crave what she lost and gain revenge against the being she believe took everything she loved.
I loved the stuff you added with Yzma and her father. Pretty much every Disney villain I've seen only cares about money, power or is driven by a deluded sense of entitlement. OG Yzma falls into the later category but she's the only one I've seen to love and care for others. She still has a compassionate side now, when I think about it. But your depictions of her grief really upped it and gave her a new layer of depth.
You know what i want? A studio who takes all the forgoten ideas from disney/pixar/dreamworks... and actually make them. But with the artist paw we can have nowadays but studios never uses for some reason... YES, I AM LOOKING AT YOU, WISH!
I’m glad they got Eartha Kitt to record this incredible song before the plot-line got scrapped, as far as I’m concerned this is a piece of history we’re lucky to have the privilege of listening to. Also is it just me, or does Yzma’s earlier design in the rough animations (For reference: 0:29 , 0:52 , 1:57 , 2:01 , 2:15 ) have more hints of Eartha Kitt in her face?
I never noticed it before, but when she talks about the sun that "robbed me of my youth" it shows her raising Kuzco. Maybe it's a double meaning for both the "sun" that aged her skin and the "son" she had to raise for all those years. It's probably obvious to everyone else, but I've never made the connection before.
3:00 dude this scene with the bright colors, the amazing Incan animal drawings used, I enjoy the final result of the movie but this choice would have made it so much cooler
I love the idea of a villain in an incan society wanting to extinguish the sun since the sun was one of if not the most important þing in the religion, sacrificing people's hearts to keep it rising and setting

The unexplored and forgotten plot that Yzma was actually a witch REALLY explains the animal potion subplot
it's funny how many little pieces of kingdom of the sun are lying around new groove! the palace on the hill has got to be a kingdom of the sun design, it's so polished and developed
This gives her antagonism towards Kuzco so much more context, too. I love the idea that the Yzma we ended up with is just on the VERGE of being a horrifying sorceress, or maybe USED to be, but at present has to make do with sloppy mad science
Science before Magic.
That's an actual idea waiting to happen, basically Cruella but with Yzma and her true ambition
Hopefully not live action but it's more likely to be that
There are plenty of stories that never made the cut. Why not bring them back?
@@barbararab6390because they would probably have to pay everyone who worked on all original aspects that they would reuse.
Actually, she was meant to wear black and teal.

To a hilarious old bat with a knack for potions
I mean, she probably was still hilarious as a sorceress.
And yet we love her quirk
It felt very similar to Facilier in Princess and the Frog, both in visuals and abilities, the revised plot was very refreshing
And yet Eartha Kitt could play both to perfection
i love them both honestly
I like how baby Kuzco/Manco is portrayed as the “little ray of sunshine that robbed her of her youth” like she had to spend her best years caring for him. We know she raised Kuzco in the final version and Manco was the physical representation of the sun in the beta, so this seems like a wordplay worthy of a Disney movie.
aw, i'm so delighted that the wordplay came across !! :D
Yeah, you'd think he'd .... uh ... turn out better.
Except her raiseing Kusco was literally because she orchestrated his parent's deaths so she could turn him into a puppet ruler. [And intentionally bad so she could take over without everyone revolting about it] Then he fired her.

@@Motleydoll123 Kuzco was called Manco in this version, actually

[This would usually result in the Preist being punished, up to such wonderful things as being thrown into snake pits to die; and offending Hawka being destroyed]
But as long as you do not challenge or offend Inti, you can worship whatever else you want.

The song literally was turned into a flea, then boxed away, then smashed with a hammer.
THIS IS WHO I AM!"
of course, it does not always work, but a villain who remains so for most of the runtime without an axis change is really fun.

One the greatest Disney villans WITH a villain song.
@@couchpotato2222 If anyone deserves it, it's her.
She’s now the most entertaining Disney villain
SHE COULD BE BETER

@@danielcurren2119 Yeah, he magical prowess seemed to be on the same level as Maleficent and Ursula, no strings attached to them, no outside help, just pure, raw, unadultered magic
None of you are gonna mention the final lovecraftian frame of Supay surrnounding and snuffing THE SUN within a hundred hands? ok.
Emperors are also often referred to as the 'sun of the empire'.
I’m guessing it also plays heavily on huitzilopochtli’s story regarding him and the moon. It seems to have the same themes.
While Yzma might think she's unattractive, this was beautiful.
thank you so much!
One of the weirdest things is that she was more attractive in the former version, like in this refined way sort of like Jafer
Eartha Kidd baby 😉
@@z2yn It could be that she would rejuvenate in the song, starting as the Yzma we all know and slowly becoming more young as the song and magic snuff up the sun.
Is true
Bro that’s actually a great ending for yzma

Remind me in 11 years or so to make an animated movie about this
While I was learning skin care for cosmetology I learned that UV rays from the sun account for 90% of visible aging.
"Ya see Mom, this is why I don't go out"
Maybe vampires look forever young, they stay out of the sun
Aging is nothing bad. It's a natural process. Please stop making people paranoid and making it seem like aging is something monstrous.
Besides, you need UV light to generate Vitamin D anyway.

Also the imagery of seeing her father "lose" to time really adds depth to her motivations, more than the shallow "I wanna be pretty", it gives a revenge side against the one enemy who took her father from her.
thanks so much pal! it's really cool that it's all coming across!
It wrenched my heart, hit very close to home

Truly, we were robbed of this production’s original vision.
Lack of faith from the executives at the time, plus a perceived "fatigue" towards grand scale animated musicals after the Disney Renaissance.
I really wish we got to see this in its entirety....
But to be fair we did get kronk out of it,
I say, make kingdom of the sun again, keep the song and the old plot, just also ad kronk

I'm extremely humbled! those are very kind words!
The plot is good from the start. If they hadn’t made “the prince and the pauper”, he ruins everything and Yzma’s hatred of the sun because of old age, something better could have been laid out.

@@Sindicat-soldat well, the MAIN PLOT isnt the big thing lets be honest. Yzma's look when she says "Lying" is about as murderous as one could get. Truly wanted this song fully animated but alas.

hey, thank you! it's awesome to hear that it matches the style that well!
I love how her earlier design looks so much more like Eartha Kitt.
Ink-suit acting is really a joy, I agree.
Yzma's voice actress however...
Now THIS is how ya reboot a movie!!!! Look at what was left on the cutting room floor and really think of how the movie could have evolved differently.
It’s not really superstitious vengeance when you’re a priest of the gods who has actual magic and thereby knows for sure that they are real
Not reboot, adding a third chapter as number three.
I’m glad she had a positive relationship with her father.
Wiracocha was the most important god in pre columbian cultures and Inca's culture,
I loved seeing the figures of the god.
Kuzco, in the original script, was called Manco (as a reference to Manco Capac). And the god of darkness summoned by Yzma was Supai.
@@TheWilderCat I'm not sure about God of time, but I know about Illapa ( god of thunder and lightning, rain, war and sometimes the weather) He was really important for inka's culture, Viracocha, his son Inti and Illapa were a trinity,
Don't forget about Supay, the god of death, he has a rivalry with Inti, that's why in the original film, Yzma made a deal with Supay to destroy Inti. Oh, and there was a leyend about Wuallallo Carhuincho, god of fire, one day he found a lost boy, so he decided to eat him, however this kid was Inti. Inti's father, Viracocha, punished him for second time: His hands and feet were tied to leave him with the animals, who would bite him relentlessly.

The entire delivery of this song from eartha is eye-wateringly good! It felt criminal not to do something with it.
I can see why they cut this. The world wasn't ready for it.
Nice...sucks this song was never animated at least, and was unused, the late Eartha Kitt had a voice we all loved and Yzma is one of the best female Villans Disney ever made and her song is one of the best. Yzma the Necromancer hits HARD and I love it.
She was a whole witch!
This was so great and full of potential and Disney's 2nd take on one and it would been grand
Lyrics:
When a woman acquires a certain age
And the men who adored you no longer swoon
It pays to avoid the sunlit days
And live by the light of the kindly moon
But the moon grows old just like us all
And her beautiful years are done
So now she prays through endless days
To take her revenge on the sun
When I was a girl at my daddy's side
Papa, the royal mortician
Revealed to me in secret signs
The mark of the magician
And daddy was no dummy
Did outrageous things with a mummy
And often the stiffs that he would shrive
Would look better dead than they did alive
I studied well, I learnt the trade
I thought my looks would never fade
If I could find that recipe
To give eternal youth to me
It was always my ambition
To use papa's tuition
And gain some small remission
From the vagaries of time
Every little ray of sunshine robs me of my youth
Who to blame? Who the one? Who to curse?
You know the only one to blame
Would be my enemy the sun
Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light, neophytes
Of a world of darkness
Ha!
Supai, baby, turn me on
Every wrinkle soon be gone
I could squeeze myself with glee
The promises you made to me
I've really stopped at nothing
Murder, treachery, and lying
Whatever it takes to keep my looks
You really can't blame a girl for trying
Ha!
Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light, neophytes
Of a world of darkness
Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light here tonight
Vespers of eternal darkness
Spiraling in circles through the night
Creatures of beguiling blackness
No more squinting in the light
Bats and owls and coiled sea dragons
Crocodile and carrion beasts
Swirling in the growing darkness
Join us in the coming feast
Spectre, wraith, and apparition
Spirit, demon, phantom shade
Salamander, serpents, dog-faced devils
Dance and watch the dying sunlight fade
Thank you kindly!
These lyrics are far cooler than they have any right to be.
Actually, I think "vespers" is really "apparitions." I've listened several times now, and the word spoken clearly has three syllables not two. Additionally, "vespers" means prayers, which breaks with the rest of the verse invoking the many creatures of the dark.

As much as I love Emperor’s New Groove, I really wish we got to see what Kingdom of the Sun was like as well.
This is amazing, it was very on point the she called baby Kuzco/Manco "little ray of sunshine" since he, as the Inca, was supposed to be a descendant of Inti (Sun god of the Incas), so it fits. I wish we could see more, I feel like this plot could have had more influence by Inca mythology, including more about the gods and some other cultural aspects.
it's true!
Yup, in christian theology its the belief the sun was a direct parallel for God and Supai is an allegory for Baal.
(Also are those inspirations from Anastasia’s “In the Dark of the Night” at the end?”
im definitely flattered to hear you think it could hold up to eartha!! I've never actually seen anastasia, so maybe an unintentional parallel!

Damn Yzma is relatable as hell for fearing dying old and unaccomplished. It makes me like her more.
(Chef's Kiss)
You really did this lost gem of a song some Justice.
I especially Love this frame {1:18} Because that implies that her Motivations for eternal youth were influenced by her father's death.
Also {3:04} always my favorite part of the song, You translated it into Visuals so Well, All the Creatures and Monsters and Incan Demons. FINALLY This song got its time in the SUN (pun-intended).
thanks so much! im glad that lil detail came across, it was one of my off script ideas :)
Yesss the idea of her doing it to escape her fear of death after loss of her father is much deeper than just beauty
@@Ami-ut2us exactly, her looks are the surface reason she wants to snuff up the sun, when in reality is that she wants eternal youth due to her fear of death, fear that was born when she saw her father grow old and wither away.
It almost makes her a simpatetic villain.
Indeed, it seemed like they were close. Perhaps while her motives seem selfish, on some level she feels it would honor him.

If Disney brought back Kingdom of the Sun and all of the cancelled projects, they would all be better than a sequel and a live action movie.
That needs to happen if disney wants to save themselves
Also, all of the original versions of bad movies like Chicken Little
Even deleted scarped songs are better than today’s villain songs 😭
This was glorious. You did such a great job giving us a glimpse of what coukd have been
You mean better than "This is the thanks I get" from Wish ?
I like that it also gives a back story to Yzma. From what I understood, she was very close to her dad, and since she took care of Kuzco (well Manko in this case) since his birth, she seems to blame him for wasting her youth.
In a way you can even pity her because she's an old woman who regrets the time she lost and is afraid of the inevitable day of her death.
“I could squeeze myself with glee, the promises you’ve made to me!”
3:32 If that’s what Supai looks like, I can’t imagine he’ll keep whatever promises he made to Yzma.
Why not? It's easier to make people sell their souls if you have a reputation for actually paying.
Probably.

They cut Yzma's villain song. criminal.
Yzma and the onceler got the best villain songs I have ever heard and they were never even used
REAL
This could have been an amazing new story besides what was given. Yzma in this version was a woman surrounded by death with her only source of love being her loving father, who lost his life to age serving a spoiled emperor deemed to be the beaming sun. She eventually served the Emperor too, and it robbed her of her youth and life, causing her to crave what she lost and gain revenge against the being she believe took everything she loved.
This is actually such a banger omgggg we were ROBBED
I loved the stuff you added with Yzma and her father. Pretty much every Disney villain I've seen only cares about money, power or is driven by a deluded sense of entitlement. OG Yzma falls into the later category but she's the only one I've seen to love and care for others. She still has a compassionate side now, when I think about it. But your depictions of her grief really upped it and gave her a new layer of depth.
thanks so much, i appreciate that!
You know what i want?

I’m glad they got Eartha Kitt to record this incredible song before the plot-line got scrapped, as far as I’m concerned this is a piece of history we’re lucky to have the privilege of listening to.
Also is it just me, or does Yzma’s earlier design in the rough animations (For reference: 0:29 , 0:52 , 1:57 , 2:01 , 2:15 ) have more hints of Eartha Kitt in her face?
Shout-out to the guy at 3:23 who is just giving it his absolute all

So real for that
One could be funny and one could be freaky
I never noticed it before, but when she talks about the sun that "robbed me of my youth" it shows her raising Kuzco. Maybe it's a double meaning for both the "sun" that aged her skin and the "son" she had to raise for all those years. It's probably obvious to everyone else, but I've never made the connection before.
As much as I adore Emperor's New Groove, it is a real shame that we never got the soundtrack that Kingdom of the Sun would have delivered.
3:00 dude this scene with the bright colors, the amazing Incan animal drawings used, I enjoy the final result of the movie but this choice would have made it so much cooler
