    Fallout: New Vegas is one of of my most favourite games of all time. Just a masterpiece. I couldn't imagine how great the game would've been if Chris Avellone and his team got more time.

    • @OnlineHipHopTV
      @OnlineHipHopTV 7 років тому +29

      Yeah, I was kinda dissapointed with how small Vegas is but no I understand why. They had to cut a lot of stuff because of the lack of time. Bethesda shouldnt have given them more time. The game would've been even beter

      if they had time to polish it and add more of the content they obviously had planned (too many locations that were kinda empty but seemed like they had purpose) it would have been so epic

    • @kidwajagstang
      @kidwajagstang 5 років тому +8

      Agreed. Vegas would have been EPIC! But they would have also shown up BETHESDA far more than they already did with their FAR better game despite this impossible development cycle timeframe. I would honestly still play it if the team was reunited and given as much time they needed to realize their full vision even if its on that ancient engine. Until New Vegas, I really didn’t think I’d ever get to play another “real” Fallout game. NV is like the final bow from Black Isle and deserves to be fully completed at some point similarly to the Fallout 2 restoration project.

    Well, that was an hour well spent! An enthusiastic and well constructed narration of fallout game development. As a gamer who was PC gaming in the 90's let me tell you about nostalgia, it's great for saying "back in our day" or "they don't know they're born!" But back then I fell asleep and dreamed of of vast roaming worlds with 3D graphics that even had no textures on it! A modded FO4 on a modern system will quite literally, if done right, blow your mind. I always remind myself as I game these days how lucky I am to have lived long enough to see even the realisation we have today! Be that by screen, or by VR, feel privileged to adopt it, and stop waiting for the next best thing. Embrace what you have, that's what 80's and 90's gamers did. And that's why nostalgia is high.

    Fallout 3's story execution was laughably inept. You need only look at the ending and their desire to have a heroic sacrifice to a high radiation area, even though they'd made it a plot point that one of NPCs the player could bring with him (Fawkes the supermutant) was completely immune to radiation. When pressed as to why this NPC doesn't just resolve everything himself, he suddenly develops a sense of spiritual destiny and declares this is the player's time.

    • @FreerunningGamer
      @FreerunningGamer 7 років тому +5

      you didn't have to sacrifice yourself though... there were multiple endings. I agree however that Fawkes should have been an option.

    • @rickdangerous1956
      @rickdangerous1956 7 років тому +14

      You had to sacrifice yourself or sacrifice Lyons. The ending was literally so indefensible that the devs actually retconned it with DLC, allowing you to either do the obvious and send fawkes (or one of the new dlc npcs in instead) or just survive going in yourself (somehow).

    • @chriswhinery925
      @chriswhinery925 7 років тому +24

      There were actually at least 3 companions in the original game that could have done it without hurting themselves. Fawkes is a supermutant. Sergeant RL-3 is a robot. Charon is a ghoul. All 3 immune to radiation. Also, Clover is a slave companion for evil characters who is brainwashed to basically be in love with whoever owns her, an evil character should be able to order her to sacrifice herself instead. The fact that fully half of the companions in the game don't make sense with the ending they foisted on the player in the original conclusion of the game is just one of many, many pieces of evidence in the case for Bethesda's writers being literally retarded.

      MATN's Jon made a fantastic argument that the ending of F3 is just stupid. Essentially it went that: Liam Neeson wanted to give clean water to everyone. The Enclave want to give free water to everyone. Only one of those two actually had the ability to distribute, so why do you kill tbe Enclave and sacrifice yoursrlf to bring clean water to everyone? Because the Brotherhood want you to, as it would be a kick to the Enclave.

    I hate the fact Bethesda won't let obsidian work on another fallout just because they were 1 POINT away from the score they wanted. Also the main reason it had one less that it It needed is because they were given so little time and tbh they made a better game in such a short time. I wish they were given longer and maybe if they did obsidian could of made another great fallout game

      Surely you’re ONLY talking about fallout 3 fallout 4 and fallout 76 yea?

    • @ChristopherSadlowski
      @ChristopherSadlowski Рік тому

      That's down to console hardware limitations. The PC, at one point, was by and large the most powerful hardware most consumers could buy. Development teams working on PC only games usually leveraged that to make games prettier AND more mechanically complex. However, around the time of the PS2 and Xbox more money was made selling your games on consoles. A lot of people didn't, and to a degree still don't, like the complexity of speccing a PC, and consoles were starting to get games that looked pretty enough in comparison to PC games. So people bought a console rather than a gaming PC. This really took off around the time of the PS3 and Xbox 360. Interestingly, it wasn't really the CPU that contained console games at that time, but RAM. The consoles had a really, REALLY low amount of memory because it was relatively expensive at that time and that constant is what led to a lot of games being pared down. By the time the PS4 and Xbox One came around prices of RAM dropped a lot, and the move toward an architecture that more closely resembled a traditional PC let developers make the more expensive creations they wanted. The PS3 only had 512 Mb! And it cost over $600 at release! It's kind of amazing that the PS3 was able to pull off a lot of the games at the time with such little memory headroom to maneuver. Now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X are out, and are basically nearly indistinguishable from a regular PC, it'll be interesting to see what the industry can do.

    It's sad what happened to the franchise... I love Fallout, grew up with it, but FO4 was a major kick in the nuts from bethesda... It's not Fallout in a ways that made Fallout.... y'know... Fallout. The absence of karma system was a major deal for me, because I could go on Commonwealth - wide killing spree and noone would lift a finger. Another thing that I didn't like is that it wasn't really a RPG game, but more of a open world FPS where you shoot practically everything that moves, unless it's story related (and thus devs made it immortal, because they don't trust that we wouldn't kill everything, as I said earlier)... and don't even make me start on that entire settlement bullshit. But mods are good, that's just about everything that's good in that game... for me at least.

  • @spidermann5000

    They should return to the original. FO4 isn't dark at all, its like a walk on a sunny Sunday afternoon, a cloud or two but nothing you would worry about. Fallout 1 was like trying to explore an abandoned factory on the not so friendly side of the town with a broken flashlight at night. Wish i could forget about this game just so i could discover it all over again.

    If I must reiterate what Lockstin said in the first 45 seconds... ahem. Chronicles is not a Lockstin or Gnoggin based series, its mine. Originally we uploaded the series to this channel when he had the hub channel idea going last year, however, that was actually hindering his channel in the long run. Now the Chronicles of Gaming goes directly to my channel every single week. Lockstin still voices a majority of the series on there weekly with Fire Emblem and Tales being some new ones we've developed. Part of our deal means that the feature length documentaries for whatever series he voices now go up here. This, for example, is a 6 part series combined into an hour long doc. So as we said at the very beginning we invite you to come over to the Chronicles channel to learn even more about video game history. We promise that it'll be awesome.

    This one is oddly pro-bethesda, anti-obsidian. Most fans of the series prefer the ones done by interplay/blackisle/obsidian. They consistenly offer richer experiences and more intricate storytelling and player choice consequences. This video would have you believe Bethesda did no wrong by and large, and only elevated the art more than incompetent interplay ever could.

    • @KeepThoseEyesOpen
      @KeepThoseEyesOpen 6 років тому +23

      Victor Gan I agree, its comes off like the series was better off with Bethesda then Interplay/Black Isle studios. Even though f1 & 2 had much better gameplay and story telling. Bethesda's Fallout has the look not the feel. The resesrch put in for this documentary comes off lazy, we all know F3 so called "choices" are half ass compared to the originals.

      From a neutral standpoint he didn't really take any sides. Just sounds like one company screwed the pooch with poor business models and workplace ethics while one company took over and saved the franchise.

      KeepThoseEyesOpen Not only that, it fails to mention that a lot of the bugs NV had fallout 3 also had. But with NV its a bit more understandable. I had no idea it only had a year of development time compared to 4 years that F3 got. Hell, I had no idea F3 got 4 years. With how crappy the game looked and ran, i thought it was developed in a year.
      TBH i despise bethesda, and learning this made me despise them even more.

    Regarding graphics in those late 80s, early 90s RPGs, no one cared about the map graphics as long as they were legible. Instead the portraits were what gave character to the surroundings. It was a bit like collecting trading cards, and you couldn't wait to see the next portrait to find out how the mobs you had been fighting for the last half hour looked. It sounds a little weird when I write it now, but this was actually one of the biggest factors in driving the player on along, obviously, with leveling, story and loot.
    It's also interesting to me that the idea for what became Fallout was antiquated before they could even make it. 1988 was still the Cold War and probably more or less insane people in power on both sides. 1995 was post-Cold War and no one talked about nuclear war anymore.

Hope someday they make it into and MMORPG like they did with World of Warcraft. OOO! I remember when Bard's Tale came out. I am 46 so I have the luxury of having played all the original games. I never understand how critics and so called fallout fans could have looked past the bad writing and story, the repetitive gameplay, the nearly nonexistent rpg elements, lack of choices, the removal of the core elements of the fallout franchise, and the questionable game design choices for Fallout 4.
    If you like playing Fallout 4 and it's also you're first fallout game, then good for you because I'm not the one to judge. However, imagine a game franchise you love all your life ever since you were first introduced but then you noticed that everything you loved about got replaced by a game mechanic that goes everything against the previous games stood for and now it was just like any other games that felt like it was meant to appeal to casuals while alienating its own fanbase in the process.

      Cant agree more.
      What annoys me a bit is: Every time i tell people Fallout is my favorite RPG of all time they think i am talking about F3 / 4 (as if Fallout 1 or 2 never existed -.-). Then they start to talk about how cool F3 / 4 (sometime NV) is.
      Then i tell them why i dislike F3 / 4.
      Then they really confused.
      Then i tell them how F 1 & 2 worked what all that differences are...
      Then they try to defend "their" Fallout ;)
      Then i put it like that: Lets assume your favorite game is Civilization and all of the sudden they make a shooter out of it or the other way around they take Counter Strike and make a peaceful city building game out of it.
      They cant regret anymore that i as fan of the old Fallout titles have a right to be pi**** ;) (cause guess how they would hate a Fallout 5 that would be more like the originals including isometric view , round based combat etc etc.).

    After watching this to the end while working on a massive fallout mod, I hope Beth calls us up and says, 'hey, we saw this New California thing you made. You should come hang out."
    I don't get the Bethesda hate. It's immature and frivolous. Are F3 and F4 the RPGs the originals were that inspired me to make a huge mo for several years? No. But I still loved F3. Haven't touched F4 but I've seen enough to envy the gameplay. With a new engine (Unreal?) Fallout 5 really needs to add the RPG back in, give it purpose, revisit California, and tell a culturally relevant story around the settlement building and survival mechanics on the edge of a world that's still dying, and social narratives that are starting to hit too close to home. Let the players express their real world anxieties in their entertainment, and make it tangibly mean something.
    From there the mechanics are great. The world building is outstanding. And the other ideas came out really well. Not the end all game to end all games, but a damn good one.

    Fallout 4 sold so much because people were so starved for a new Fallout game they pre ordered it the moment Bethesda announced the damn thing. People pre ordered/bought Fallout 4 because they expected 4 to be a perfected 3 and New Vegas which was a perfectly reasonable thing to expect from a company such as Bethesda. If only people knew what kind of Game Fallout 4 will be before release it wouldn't sell nearly as much.

I always try for a non lethal solution as it is most of the time the quickest way to do a quest.
    I had the luck to play F NV after it was patched (I actually waited a lot before buying it, as I was not convinced by F 3) and god do I love this game. 200 hours, played all the faction, played all add on. It was the best mixt between the old fallout sensation (with an amazing new lore connecting with the ancient) and the new bethesda combat system.
    I can't play F 3 anymore because, paradoxally, it is buggy as hell. I have bought the GOTY version and I can barely pass the vault section. And it's not like I want to try again as the early part (your birth, when you're a baby, the birthday, the test) is loooong and boring. I'm sure there's a mod to avoid to skip most of it.
    F 4 is not a bad game, but it's a terrible RPG. 4 dialogues options, most of the time being "yes no question sarcastic answer". Felt like most building to explore were just excuse to loot unique stuff. The crafting is nice, but I found boring to have to save a location every ten minutes, and that there's no autonomy coming from settlement. I also feel like the loading screen are getting longer and longer, which was not the case when it was released. Same impression with Skyrim.
    Anyway, your video was nicely done, I learned a lot about Interplay and Black Isle. So much opportunities wasted... I hope Obsidian will do a new Fallout. Some people are actually modding FNV in F4. I can't wait to test it.

    Dude ...
    Like.... I remember when I used to watch History Channel and it still had quality and content.
    This video makes me think we need a History Channel for videogames.
    My compliments.

      I think an argument could be made for Fallout 2 depending on how you feel about pop culture references. But it's a close call, New Vegas was fantastic.

      There is a fan-made mode that cuts out self refferential refferences out of FO2, which makes game nearly perfect.

      N o Yup, but it was a bit buggy and had some problems with frame rate drops. It could have been more polished, although it was/is the best Fallout game so far.

    With Skyrim and Fallout 4 bringing so much money for Bethesda, I really hope that with Fallout 5 they'll strive more for a deeper, more critically acclaimed game.

    Ever since FO3 was released Ive wanted to be play it on a handheld device and finally my dreams came true with the steam deck. First two games i bought was FO3 and FONV and two days ago i finally took the plunge and bought FO76 and they all play like a dream. Next week I’m gonna buy FO4. The steam deck is now my console of choice as having a wife that sadly bedbound 90% of the time i can lay next to her and she can watch whatever she wants while playing games on her phone and i can dive deep into everything Fallout
