Useful video. Would be nice to see a short video on the lights performance and beam pattern. There has been some controversy with incorrect LEDs spoiling the beam pattern and bikes failing tests.
LED bulbs retrofitted to a halogen headlight are not legal in the UK and will fail an MOT test if a vehicle was manufactured on or after 1st April 1986.
Wow! Great video. Super useful for my Continental and giving the GS a break during winter commuting without having to give up the Gerbing heated gear! Thanks for sharing
What I would do as well, is check the temperature of the regular box, give it some time and see what its like, if its getting hot that might be the cause of some issues as well. If its getting hot, you might need to do something about getting more airflow / cooling over it. I am not sure where it is on the 350. The tail light could be replaced as well if you are looking for a little more.
Great to hear that you enjoyed my video, hope you found it useful 👍 I’ve also just replaced the two small front side lights with LED bulbs. So far no problems at all running with full heated gear. I do plan on refitting the original bulb in the spring when heated gear is no longer needed. Don’t want the regulator to have to work overtime due to possible overcharging the battery. The regulator is fitted below the battery box near the swinging arm pivot, not the best place for air flow.
I have not changed anything on my Classic but am considering the LED lamp plus the little tiger lamps at the side of the headlamp. Looks like worthwhile upgrade.
Hi Blearyview I only fitted the LED headlight bulb due to its low power consumption, it helps when I use my heated clothing due to the alternators low output. If it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t have done it as I think the original halogen bulb gives a better headlight. I intend to put the original bulb back in when the weather gets warmer when the heated gear isn’t being used. I also don’t tend to ride after dark, eyes aren’t young anymore 🤣
@@tigerness5555 Aye I know what you mean about the eyes 🤣I have watched a few folk who have changed to LED and they think it a better light. Good to know it not the case and will save my cash. I do not have the heated gear so no need to drop the power demands of the bike. cheers TN 👍
Thanks for a very helpful video. I'm going to be riding my Bullet 500 from Ardross to Cornwall in a few weeks and want to add main beam linked spotlights, so fitting one of these bulbs will allow me to do that without overloading the alternator. The spotlights take 40W the same as your heated gear. By the way I use Keis heated gear too but run it off batteries, I hate wires connecting me to the bike because I always forget to disconnect them when I get off! Cheers and subscribed!
Enjoy your ride to Cornwall on your Bullet. In my opinion the dipped beam on with this Lucas bulb is pretty poor. I definitely wouldn’t like to ride that distance in the dark with it. For my needs it works for me but I don’t ride after dark. Hope you enjoyed the video 👍
@@tigerness5555 Thanks for the info, I'll have a look for a brighter bulb. At this time of year I'll be riding in the dark quite a lot. I'll be catching up with some of your previous videos as and when I have time. Bye for now.
Thanks, and well done. (2023 Meteor 350 owner here, across the pond.) One other comment: I think your heated gear, when run at full power, is on the low end of vests and gloves. That is, I think a lot of heated gear, at full tilt, will run more than the 40 watts of your kit. Just something for folks to be aware of.
Genius idea, Ian. I read elsewhere of a rider using heated clothing running into battery problems on the RE 350. And like you said, with mostly day light riding any issue with night time light performance (as per comments below) is a mute issue. We get significant snow fall and icy roads during winter months, so my RE becomes a garage queen, sadly.
@@tigerness5555curious to know why you would need to change it back. I had wondered, also, with many riders using additional electronic equipment on their bikes, if this modification would provide for longer battery life by reducing the draw?
Morning Ian, I hope you don’t mind, but I have linked your channel to my latest offering, in reference to the Keis clothing and your findings/solution. You explained it far better than I could, and credit should therefore go to you.
Hi Ian Not a problem, in fact thanks for promoting my channel 👍 I watched your video, great to hear that the Keis kit is working well. It really is a game changer for cold weather riding. Take care and have a happy new year 🥃😁
Hi Ian, I was out in the garage yesterday, fitting an LED H4:headlight bulb. It was a Novsight 9003, as it had fantastic reviews, but, it does not fit the aperture slot, so of no use for the Meteor headlight. (So don’t buy this one guys) I have now ordered an Auxito 9003 LED, the pictures show, this to be similar in gurth to the stand bulb. If this doesn’t fit, then I order this Lucas version. Thanks again, for a great video Ian. Mark.
Hi Marc, yes there isn’t much spare space inside the headlight shell, that’s why I chose one of a similar size to the original. I might take the bike out tonight when it’s dark to see how it performs, it may be absolutely rubbish 🤣 I’ve now also replaced the two small front sidelights with LED’s, they’re lot brighter. Hope your Auxito works well, ride safe 👍
Hi Marc, the answer is yes. I’ve actually done this since this video was made, they’re much brighter. I was out on the bike tonight in the dark so there’s another wee update video coming out tomorrow morning. The LED headlight bulb is Ok but not brilliant, wouldn’t like to do a lot of nighttime winter riding with it. @@weemark67
I.ve watched your oil change video and the led bulb headlight , this RE is so easy to work on, I have a Piaggio Liberty 150 , You need to be an engineer to change the light bulb, and the oil is no fun either.
Great to hear that you enjoyed the video and hopefully found it helpful. The Classic 350 is a very easy and enjoyable bike to work on. It’s also fantastic to ride 👍
Great demo, the headlight output, from our view point, appeared quite a lot dimmer, how satisfied were you with the beam when seen in the dark? Thanks Ian.
Great to hear that you enjoyed my video, hope you found it useful 👍 I don’t tend to ride my bike in the dark, especially in winter. The main reason for the change was to allow heated clothing to be worn without draining the battery.
Thanks for your vid. Just a quick question which I'll probably ask a couple more times over the next 4 to 6 months. How is the new cam and bike performance coming along?
Great to hear that you enjoyed my video, hope you found it useful 👍 The new camshaft is performing very well indeed and so far trouble free. Definitely one of my better modifications to the bike.
@@tigerness5555 Your step by step cam replacement video has given me confidence of doing it myself. I'm actually getting the chrome bronze next week and have already collected a few things to swap out - mirrors, heel/toe gear lever and the air filter cover. Pity you're moving into colder weather/seasons. I live in a coastal regional town in South Australia, so a little more grunt would go a long way in overtaking slower drivers.
It's the beam pattern I would be worried about if anything. But lucas should know by now how to make a bulb right. Please let me know how you get on. Thanks for the idea.
From day one, I got in my head that the bulb fitted to my Meteor, would be poor quality, so bought a Halfords 5k bulb. On riding home from Arbroath,it was getting dark, on dip it seemed fine, but once I put high beam on, it was like darkness in front of me, the beam of light, was spread equally to my left and to the right, but nothing in front, where you want it. So kept on dipped. I was getting flashed from car drivers. With it being 5k rated, probably draws a little more power. Think standard bulbs are rated at 3.4K.
