Hi Ian. The chrome bezel is glued to the casing. I pried mine apart to address a condensation issue. The glue, polystyrene cement or similar is fairly brittle, but a flat bladed screwdriver worked very carefully around incrementally cracked it apart unscathed. The two screws hold the electrics in place within the case. The casing actually breathes via drilled holes in the casing sides which are covered internally with gauze to prevent dust ingress. I drilled extra holes backing with gauze and then reglued the bezel on. This stopped further condensation issues. Hope the anatomy of the internals might help others.

      Thanks for this.
I get a little condensation very occasionally so its not a big problem.
But should it get bad I can think of doing this.
Should it need replacement I will get a kilometre one from EBay 50 quid but still has second mph readings so not illegal

I would think the moisture getting in is the reason why the glues becoming unstuck and possibly the dial warping, makes sense to me moisture is the main culprit.

Hi, I had the same problem last week so I went to the dealer who told me the warranty process (long and drawn out), he then suggested that I disconnect the Speedo clean the connection then reconnect it and see if that cures it and hey presto it did! So fingers crossed it stays that way. At one stage my Speedo was telling me I was travelling at 100 mph 🤣. Since cleaning the connection I’ve had no problems . Thanks for the info, ingenious fix 👍

Thank you. Same problem, intermittently. Usually when bike is in direct hot sun. Cleaning contacts did seem to improve things for my C350, but that doesn’t support your finding of a friction point. Thx for doing an autopsy for us, Ian.

Same thing happened to my speedo 2 weeks, dial was warped from 60mph markings and needle jammed during start up sweep. Motorcycle was in direct sun for a couple of hours…was not particularly warm as in Scotland. Took it to nearest dealer and they advised it would be a straightforward warranty claim. That was 3 days ago. Hopefully will get a a replacement soon. First issue with 350 and happy otherwise. Very informative channel and thanks for making video on this issue !

Hi Ian, very interesting. I'm on my third Classic and the Speedometers on the first two were replaced. I spoke to Royal Enfield on this issue and they said the problem was related to the glass distorting and so trapping the pivot point of the needle, particularly when there is direct sunlight onto the glass. They told me the Speedos were manufactured in China and that a modified Speedo was in production to cure the problem - that was back in 2022. I'm now on my 3rd Classic and in 9 months of ownership it has stuck once. Seems you may have stumbled across another issue with them?🤔 Love your videos and the tinkering and fettling you do to yours, keep em coming.🙂👍

Fascinating! My speedo needle has never stuck BUT the back plate has certainly warped. Initially it warped exactly how you described: the top, right started lifting up. Since then, it was more or less warped back down, not at all perfectly though. It's better than it was but definitely not as good as its original condition. Also, the central black disc of the needle looks mottled and pockmarked. It's all very strange but, again, the needle has always worked as per usual. The only explanation I could come up with was that it resulted from the heat of direct sunlight (or maybe moisture). Anyway, I'm so glad you posted this video! 🤓

Morning Ian. This is quite timely, as I will be doing a long term review on mine soon, also talking about the speedo 🙄. I found mine went wonky, in bright/hot sunshine last August. Put a warranty claim in, still waiting for the replacement. I could have had a like for like replacement, but didn’t see the point, as I had heard a rumour that RE had discovered what the fault was, and were supposed to be coming up with a new speedo with different back plate. In the meantime, while the weather isn’t hot, the speedo behaves, but I have bought a gps bicycle speedo, which is surprisingly accurate for use when the weather warms up.

As my new speedometer has a slightly different part number, I’m hoping that it has been modified to potentially rectify this fault. Funny I mentioned fitting a bicycle speedo to another Royal Enfield owner at the weekend as a temporary fix to his speedometer issue.

    Lateral thinking, love it!
Mine had the same problem at 800 miles, My local dealer got me a new one under warranty within a couple of weeks, I just had to take a photo of the serial number ( to save a visit there where they would have had to have opened ity up and got the number first, don't know why RE needed that info, but it was sorted very quickly)
Several people have commented about too much grease on the contacts, and the relays too, but from what you found, certainly looks mechanical. Thanks Ian for a really interesting video

Really interesting stuff ! Thanks. It's handy that you've now got a scrap speedo to experiment with. The paper clip clamps could indeed solve the issue of the backplate lifting. We shall see.
I suppose it will depend on the tension required to prevent the lifting.
There seem to be various issues with these speedos. Some, like yours, seem to have the backplate lifting and interfering with the needle calibration sweep. Others, like mine, appeared to get condensation in the connector ( possibly happens when you ride on a hot relatively humid day and the speedo then cools down ), which just needed opening, cleaning and protecting and all was good again. That fix lasted until I sold the bike, six months later, I had no further issues. And plenty of people, myself included, managed to get condensation behind the "glass" and in the LCD part.
Hopefully the new part number is an indication that RE has addressed some of the known issues with these speedos. It has taken them long enough and I dread to think what they've had to spend replacing all of those speedos under warranty !
Fingers crossed that your new one doesn't have any similar issues !
Thanks for a very well presented and informative video Ian 👍🏻

@@tigerness5555 We can but hope ! It would be great if RE have finally got on top of this issue because it's very annoying and pretty much the only thing that causes aggro on these bikes. It is a pain for the owners when they lose their original odometer count too. Replacing speedos multiple times doesn't seem like much of a solution to me. I know of people who are on their fourth speedo. So presumably they have to add up the mileage of all four to know their total mileage so far. Brilliant ! Will RE pay for their calculator batteries too ?
      Cheers Ian,
      Garry

Hi. I too had the same speedo problem starting last year, “the fix” switching ignition of and on did indeed cure the problem for a while but it did return and this time permanent. I too since the first 300 service have done all my own servicing. So in I went to my RE distributer and explained my situation. The reception person was adamant I wouldn’t get it replaced because of the service schedule had not been kept up as required. I pointed out that although RE stated this and it was clearly written in their service manual I did not sign this and also my consumer rights bypassed this clause. However the service manager heard this discussion and came across and listened to what I had to say I also added it was not a “one off” and that this was a common problem his response was “we are here to do the best for our customers first and foremost “leave it with me” 2 weeks later I received a call to go and get my new speedo fitted. RE are well aware this is a problem and if you can get your garage to back you up they can’t or won’t refuse to replace it. I think this batch should be recalled as they have not brought out an updated speedo. The problem I’m told was the glue was coming off the backing allowing it to ripple this has been addressed. Hope this helps.

I self serviced my bike and the dealer was fully aware of that.
My speedo packed in and I thought, Ill go in and ask the question.
Do you know he had Speedos in stock and gave it to me despite me self servicing.
Maybe it depends on the dealer but I was surprised he had the speedo "

Sounds like the factory needs to stick the back plate down better or fix down a different way? I’ve just had my classic 350 in the halcyon green , I’m very pleased but my first ride was very scary as I hadn’t rode for over 40 years, I did 24 miles and started to feel better but had trouble getting my boot under the gear selector so I think I’m going to buy a heal and toe . But I will be glad when I’ve got used to it a bit better. Then I’m going to go on a police course as I think I need it . But it’s lovely to have a bit of sunshine at last , your very good at engineering things and solving problems, I no good at that so really enjoy watching your videos thankyou 👍🏍️

I hated the standard gearlever, I’ve tried moving it to different positions on the shaft splines and this helped slightly. The heel and toe gearlever is brilliant in my opinion and is the one that was specifically designed for this bike. The gearlever that comes as standard is only fitted because European markets don’t like heel and toe gearlevers.

I am having an intermittent issue with my speedometer but not quite the same as yours. I bought my 2023 Red/Chrome Classic 350 in February 2024. Within the first 100 miles, I noticed the speedometer sticking. When I would stop, it only returned to 20 mph or so. Following that as I was riding it indicated 20 mph higher than my actual speed. After that day in March, it was fine. It didn't repeat the sticking until I was coming home this past Sunday from a 50 mile ride. About a mile from home, it stuck on 40 mph. I reached 320 miles, so it was time to do the 300 mile service - changing the oil and filter and set the valve tappet clearances. After turning the ignition on and off a couple of times, the needle returned to zero and seems to do a full sweep without any problem multiple times. There is a faint noise as the needle sweeps back and forth but it's the same throughout the full sweep. There is no sign of the needle even getting close to the numerical face of the speedo. Since I just did the 300 mile service myself, I expect I might have an issue with the warranty at the dealer, which is 30 miles away. I know Stewart Fillingham had a speedo issue and couldn't ride his classic for a couple of months So, I ordered a tachometer from Hitchcocks so I would be able to estimate my speed if this continues to happen. Since my bike was manufactured in the spring of 2023, I had hoped they had the speedo issue corrected. Keeping my fingers crossed at this time. Very moderate weather here in California and I keep the bike garaged.

    Hi Ian,
Very interesting, I wonder if anyone has got into the unit?
I would have to, just like you.
But, can you cut the bezel off with a Dremel?
At that point you should be into the cavity.?
Of course we dont know if it can be disassembled from here.
Plastic glues are plentyful for reassembly / sealing.
Is there a chap out there with a 3D printer ? who could print a new body that is servicable?
    Yes, there must be!
Come on lets set up a challenge ! There must be a lot of duff speedos on garage shelves world wide.?
Does the Meteor clock suffer with the same problem ?
    A note to the manufacturer:
Just a small change to the injection die to incorporate some hold down lugs to the chromed speedo facia would immediately fix this problem.
Or maybe your spares business would suffer too much???.
    Regards

I had condensation inside the lower digital panel from delivery, before any cleaning or rain. Counter-intuitively, this was mostly evident in warmer weather after the bike had run for a while. This seems to have disappeared after a year, and one suggestion was that tape inside the headlamp nacelle contacts should have been removed by the dealer, keeping moisture inside the speedo unit. I wonder if Royal Enfield make the unit or its provided by a sub-contactor, as repeated failures are not reflected elsewhere in the bike's construction.

I notice some owners report long delays in warranty claims. My 350 Meteor Nova started misting the led screen after a few miles running. I reported this to my dealer (GS Motorcycles). Hi Ian. Been pondering your speed problem all week. Not sure why, as I have a Meteor and a Hunter.
If you made a wire tool similar to the one you made that's sole purpose would be to push the raised dial down. Then drill 2 holes next to each other. Insert the tool, lower the dial and put a little blob of hot glue in the second hole. When dry, remove the tool and seal the 1st hole with hot glue. Repeat process several times so the dial is blocked down and that should be a permanent cure.

Hi Ian, i bought a 2022 classic last year, the gentleman i bought it off give me a cover made of polyurethane which fitted snuggly over the the speedometer, he told me to fit every time i washed the bike, im not sure thats its purpose im more inclined to think its to stop direct sunlight shining on it as its opaque in colour rather than clear but you can still read your speed but its not as distinct.

    Hi Ian,
Sorry to bleat on about this.
Having visited India many times, I can almost certainly say that somebody there will be repairing these speedos.
ALMOST EVERYTHING is recycled, until theres nothing left that could be useful to somebody.
I've seen piles of light bulbs being recycled for the steel fitment, glass and filaments _ incredible to us in our world of waste.
You have to take your hat off to their inginuity and skill.
If theres somebody in India reading this, please post a return message to confirm a repair location
    Regards Mike N

Hi Ian, may I suggest thinking about some serious surgery to get inside the case then you will see what the real problem is and get some insight on how it has been made very difficult to open. And follow up with a 3D printed replacement case with an easy to get into design. Are there any "legal" traps with not having the real milage showing on the speedometer on the bike? The little bent paperclip idea is pure genius - fast, low cost and it does the job needed. 👍

They put to much contact grease in the speedo connection. Mine done this from brand new. Clean a lot of the grease out of the connection and it will work fine. My backing was all wavy and kept catching then the new one would go to full speed and get stuck all over the place. I then cleaned the connection and it is fine. Mine only has 1400 klms on it.

Very interesting. The speedo problems I have heard about have been due to condensation/water leaks or too much thick grease on the speedo electrical connector. The Enfields are great bikes but these are the sort of issues they really need to sort. Why they have gone with such a flimsy and poorly secured backing plate is beyond me. Any competent engineer should have spotted the potential for your issue to occur.

My Classic 350 was on its fourth speedometer when I sold it. This seems to only be a problem with MPH speedometers, not the KPH ones. What I found on my original speedometer was the face would bulge up and jam the needle when it got hot. I’ve heard a rumor that the latest version doesn’t have this problem. No evidence of this though.

My RE350 Classic with a KPH speedo has similar problems. I doubt that the problem is purely mechanical though, as the speed reading goes up to 160km/h on a hot day.

    • @BlueRidgeRider
      @BlueRidgeRider 2 місяці тому

@@martinmuller2809 the heat causes the face of the gauge to bulge. That causes the needle to stick during its initial sweep. Wherever it sticks becomes its new starting point, adding whatever number that is to the speed you are traveling. I don’t doubt that a few KPH speedos have this problem but it is extremely rare, as opposed to MPH speedos where it is extremely common.

It baffles me why so many people seem happy to give up their rights under consumer law just because they do their own servicing. RE provide their customers with a tool kit and even do instructional videos on how to perform some of your own maintenance. Also the speedo fault is a known fault with some of the Classic 350s, and it has nothing to do with who does the servicing. Anyway it's your decision.
