  • This chess clock was made in 1950`s in Russia. My client wanted me to make it nicer, because it was meant to be birthday present for young and talented chess player. This kind of works are not about the money, but the joy, restoring something different.

To be clear, the original finish was faux wood, it was not veneered.

Well, why not veneer it then?

      Hey you speak French! "faux"

Was this faux wood for effect, or meant to imitate a more expensive wood? I know that in the Art Deco period, sometimes graining was done for it's own sake, but I know little of 1950's Russia. Perhaps it was difficult to obtain exotic wood in Russia at that time?

Beautiful job, as always, Ahti! I have an 1850's rosewood desk where the cabriole legs are attached with a decorative cast iron piece. They're faux painted original and in perfect condition. If cared for, it'll last another 170 years. Another nice thing about a faux wood finish is that it doesn't fade from sunlight, like clear-finished wood can. Thanks for sharing your expertise, Master! 🙂 Wishing you a happy holiday.

Didn't understand why you were painting over the wood but then realized it wasn't and you were doing a multi layered finish to restore the original look of it!!! Amazing dedication and attention to detail. Your skills are impeccable!!!

All of the chess clocks I have seen (my husband has taught chess clubs for many years, so I've seen quite a few) were always very cheap construction. You made that one a work of art!

Unusual subject matter this time, Ahti. Judging by the wear on the top panel, it had seen more than just a few tournaments, with players hitting the stop button very hard. Great job on the simulated woodgrain. Not surprised the linseed oil took two weeks to dry.

You know, it never occurred to me that those things have different clock mechanisms for each player. I just assumed that the switches engaged a different set of gears that controlled the other clock face. Not that that has anything to do with woodworking. 😁 Another amazing job!

(@.@) Magic indeed! What a beautiful job, I had seen your video on faux finishes, but it took a minute to realize that is what you were doing.
You sir, are not only a Sorcerer of color matching, but also an Artist of the highest degree. To see how to put all the pieces together to come up with such a lovely finish, that's some pretty serious artistic magic. And a very lucky young chess player!
Thank you so much for posting, always makes the week better.

I think this was a miss. The original faux finish was far superior artistry. Not that its not good, its just not up to the usual level of good you do. If you had to scrap it I think just making the natural wood shine would have been better.
