Unfortunately your asking for a dream, these auctions have people go over these cars to come up with the maximum value they think they can get before it goes up for auction, combined that with people bidding that don't realize that McLaren parts are extremely hard to get used, an McLaren doesn't even want to sell you new parts unless your having them do the repair, an that leads to people over paying for the car an pushing out any bidder that crunched real world practical numbers. Just look at tavaris an what he went thru to rebuild his 675LT, which seems like he only did that build because McLaren taunted him saying he'd never be able to get that car rebuilt himself an yea he proved them wrong but it wasn't cheap by any means an only made since because he got a lot of content out of it.

Hi Sam, of course you can always provide a service where you go to the salvage yard, take videos pictures of many vehicles and charge a fee for this service and also buy the car for a buyer (the buyer sends you the money to buy for them so you meet the 25 cars a year discount), this helps he beginners out so they save on the fees. You just charge 1%. You buy it and ship to them under your account. The buyer sends you the funds of course so you don't get stuck with a vehicle.

Copart fees always strike me every time, even though I am aware of them. And their tricks, oh man... Approved my bid Wednesday afterhours. I used a new form of "online payment" and they took 72h to confirm it on their end (even though it is "online" and the money got out of my account right away). It was Monday afternoon when they approved it - local office was about to close, no time to arrange tow truck. Charged me storage fees for all period, including the weekend. And their customer service, useless. If they are too busy, the call just disconnects and you have to call again. 30 min waiting. List goes on and on. I am never buying from them again.

Thunderbirds are really cheap to buy in nice running condition in the regular market. Lots of classic cars end up in auctions because people insure them with regular insurance thinking they are saving money. But what happens is as soon as you have a claim, even if it’s minor, the insurance company totals it because it’s more than 10 years old. If the owner would have had classic car insurance it would have been fixed.

Thank you for making this video!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 your 100% right about this! The work around is go to your local high end body shop and let them know what your looking for. The next time they get a total in of that car they will call you and you do the buy back so you get the car with a clean title and you they the owner and body shop a small fee on top of the buy back price. The down side is you can’t run volume this way, it takes a wile to get the car, buy backs are usually fairly high but your getting a clean title and you can get the body shops input on the car before you pull the trigger.

It just became impossible to do anymore. I was smart n just stopped.where many of my friends kept going ended up losing tens of thousands of dollars and more importantly their mental health. It gets deeper but let’s just say I stayed sober through it all and realized more to life than money.

Sam, it’s clear the salvage auction sites are trying to make more money on people like you and myself. What’s their motivation, besides money? They could be getting pressure from the dealer market since used cars are so stupid right now. I’m biased but you should buy the Benz wagon and let’s collaborate. I’m doing an E320 Wagon on my channel. Simone put nuts and bolts into the intake and trashed the engine. Electrify it? Put an AMG engine in it? Lots of options for content. Good for thought.

My dad had that MB wagon in that exact color. I believe it was a 1980 300TD. Ran it up to 350k miles and sold it. Today, he still drives a 1986 300SDL with about 400k miles on it. Biggest problems with these old MB's is that parts all have to be custom made in specialty shops because they just aren't available. He had to spend $1500 last year for a specific coolant line because a replacement just doesn't exist. His mechanic has offered 16k for the 300SDL, but my dad won't part with it.

I'm loving that '59 T-Bird. That looks awesome and getting an engine for it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Frankly, rebuilding that existing engine would be in the $3k - $4k range. Which leads me to think the car has something else going on as a $4k repair wouldn't total out a $10k car. For giggles, I'd be curious what it sold for.

You could probably save more than 20% if you don't order on eBay since their selling fees have climbed astronomically, thus, driving the cost of merchandise to rise. Another thing, Sam, is that I'm sure you have better connections on parts than most who restore or fix vehicles. If you don't have tight business connections on rare parts, then you're not really doing business. Sure, parts for a McLaren are going to be more expensive, however, it's likely that you have parts or cars that another restorer needs and you have the ability to barter instead of spending liquid cash.
