  • This is a follow up video on my car breaking as Mercedes charges an arm and a leg and my car is out of warranty I figured I would wrench on it myself.. The car is a 2010 Mercedes benz C200 Kompressor with the M271950.. motor with 159000 km on the clock.
    Huge thanks to Merc Master in Lansdowne, Cape Town for parts and advice.

    Thanks for the great video. Got a 2007 W203 C180K with 240,000km due for it's second chain. The chain has stretched badly. This is my first time attempting this repair myself as the first time it was done was when Mercedes did it under warranty in 2010. I've been looking for a video for a while and yours will help alot. Thanks.
    P.S. Merc dealer wanted R32,000 for this job. Got the timing chain kit for R3500.

      Yes the gears are a bit crazy prices online and in the parts shop for oem stuff. I got the gears from a local guy that refurbs then with better steal and the tensioner and chain i got at goldwagen and masterparts. They both do sell the kit but im not sure how much it costs but still way cheaper than having the job done by the shop or dealer. Although that would be the way to go.

      No the tensioner comes out before you loosen the sprockets if you cN lock the cams. But if you dont have the locking tool for the cams you can use the crank pulley and hold that and loosen the cam gears, if its not slipping the chain too much But you run the risk of turning too much and hurting valves

      Once you on the timing marks on the cams I removed the spark plugs and when I took off the cam gears. The cams spring into a spot where its not pushing any of the valves down thats how I could turn the crank all the way around. I only put gears back on once i was back on timing marks.

    I noticed you turned the crankshaft to wind on the chain.. does this mean the engine is a non interference engine . Is the c180. W203 like that.

    • @YusufPetersenCPT
      @YusufPetersenCPT  5 років тому +6

      Brilliant question the engine is not a non interference engine. I didnt mention this but once both cam shafts are on the timing line none of the valves are being pressed down allowing you to turn the engine over without hitting the valves. DO NOT turn the engine unless the cam shafts are on the timing lines. If they are not lined up you will hit the valves when turning in the new chain. Yes the W203 has the same engine slightly different engine code but looks internally exactly the same. Even when i buy parts sometimes it has W203 on the packaging.

    Hi Yusuf. I am doing this job right now. Thank you very much for sharing. I followed your directions for dismantling the tensioner. I just need advice on removing the top timing chain cover that holds the thermostat. Do you have to pry it off with leverage after removing thermostat and all torx bolts male and 2 female, then when replacing the cover what seal/gasket maker is recommended??
    Then most importantly, Did you have any following issues after the installation or is the merc still running well?

    • @YusufPetersenCPT
      @YusufPetersenCPT  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there Jackson.. well the front cover you are talking about with the thermostat in can be taken off as one piece with the plastic pipe still on it once all the nuts are out it can be removed just by prying it off it dose sit on there tight. That's how I did it. When putting it back I just use some normal glue devil gasket maker glue with a thin bead around the coolant part and around the whole cover actually just to seal that up good as its logical if it's not sealed good there coolant and oil can mix. Let it sit for a while after putting it back to make a good seal. Yes it's still running after this fix. It's been over 15 000km now. I'm due for another service again I constantly check oil and coolant levels and they dont drop at all. Hope this helps and good luck. I will occasionally feature the car on my channel. 😅👍

It has been making a low noise for diesel for some time, or maybe more similar to touches, when the engine is started, the first time of the day. It's serious? Remember do not turn the crank when the chain is off unless you know the valves are not down. Ooooo im not 100% sure but i think its that small thing the vacuum lines are plugged into theres one electronic plug in it too under the plastic engine cover to the left of coil number 3..🤔 hope this helps. Most likely just needs to be replaced. If you got that cheap OB2 scanner you can see of you are making boost or not should be around 12psi

    Yusuf, further to the comment I asked before, how did you join the chain. Its supposed to be riveted but I don't have a tool to do that, do you think it would be ok to use the joining link that uses the two small clips, they are Febi so should be good ones, it would make it a lot easier to do, have you any thoughts on this that may help, Jim

      Hi Jim well i kinda modified a G-clamp with a nut taped to the back end to push out the existing pin from the old chain then just used the same clamp to push in the same pin using the negative side of the new chain that way i could just turn the chain in all the way around and then push out that same pin and use the clamp again to push in the new link linking in the new chain, I hope this helps.

      @YusufPetersenCPT  2 роки тому

      @@emiljanocakalli1778 when doing adjusters and tensioner the chain must be replaced too its most likely stretched if everything else was done right. When i put the tensioner in on my job there was hardly any slack i could turn the engine around by the crank a few times and it didnt jump thats before i even started the car. So DO NOT start it like that replace the chain first. make sure the chain is nice and tight on the intake side coming from the crank and adjusters on their timing mark then the chain should be tight from intake cam to exhaust cam and the slack is on the tensioner side. The tensioner goes in last to take up the slack. Once adjusters are on and tensioner is in you should be able to turn the engine without any issues. If it gets stuck came timing is maybe out.

      The bottom chain is separate to the top chain and it didnt jump so timing down there should be ok. I moved the crank back and forth a few times so maybe it just happened to be aligned when I put it together. To be honest I never worried about the balance shaft I guess its a lucky accident that it went together normal I'm still driving the car since then put 6000+km on so far still driving normal.

      I used Patronis or you can use Liqui Moly 10w40 but it really depends on your budget. Check my service video for the exact oil I used. But after this job use a cheaper oil for a few hundred KM then drain to remove junk.

      Same procedure, who cares where the chain is situated. Did one on a E250 CDI, injectors out, tappet cover off, cams out, break chain, pull new one through and assemble. Cam sprocket is not keyed onto camshaft and uses left hand thread.

  • @1jakobandre
    @1jakobandre 3 роки тому

    Attention!!! If you feed the new chain like in the video at min 6:00, you will break a valve or crook it!!
    If the camshafts are still assembled and in one position and you turn the crankshaft to feed the new chain, the piston says hello to the open valves. If you feed it as shown in the video , you first have to remove the camshafts or use the special feeder tool for these m271 engines !!!

    • @YusufPetersenCPT
      @YusufPetersenCPT  3 роки тому +1

      Actually no i clearly turned the crack all the way around and more to feed the new chain in. With the cam shafts loose and no gear on with them close to the timing mark theres a point were it isnt pushing any of the 16valves down. Only when the chain is all the way in i turn crank to make all 4 pistons sit lower down or level to make room for setting cam marks. With gears on and close to timing marks i then TDC crank then set cam timing when you put the last gear on you just have to move it slightly to its timing mark to put the chain on and then insert tensioner. I didnt damage any piston or valves doing it this way. Just never turn the crank when you know cam gears are pushing on any valves. Note the cam shaft gears are not on when feeding the chain because they are not pushing any valves down. Thats the key. The gears go back on only once you are ready to set timing.
