I am wondering what order is best to do the chain in? Can tensioner be removed in the beginning of process and left to last step or does it not matter? Also whilst having the sprockets off and chain de-linked, is there any possibility of chain falling off bottom sprocket? Same question for the cam sprockets. Any advice would be much appreciated
I'm doing this repair myself. 1. park the car where you feel comfortable leaving it for a long time. Drain the coolant. 2 . To answer your question. Have the car at TDC and use the cam holders/locker as seen on this video to lock the cams into set position. 3. Remove the tensioner to release tension on the chain. From there you remove the cams and delink the chain. If you have questions feel free to ask.
Question: my car rattles on start up, while driving it is not as bad. When I accelerate quickly it rides rough. Getting cam position sensor error. Is this all related to the cam adjusters failing? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
By disconnect the old chain and connect a new chain to the old one and the engine in the direction of its rotation and feed the chain and connect the new one together.

Engine was driving smooth. I paid 750€ for the repairs. Next day I was driving to work, same thing check engine light went on , and i already hear rattle again.) So my repairman said you need new engine, because thats a common problem with 1.8 kompressors. He said your options are new engine or sell the car. I went to other garage for second opinion. Because I really love that car. He said both of the brackets should be changed and the problem would be solved. (The first guy said, that it could be variety of reasons why cams are breaking, could be to much oil pressure so it imbalances the chain, thats why the rattle sounds comes back.) the second guy who is only repairing Mercedes veichles said to me I could change two brackets and problem solved. One bracket costs around 500-530€ so two new brackets and labour. It could pass the 1k mark in repair cost. What should I do , trust the guy who only fixes mercedes, or just get rid of the car. And search for something new? I am so lost……..
If the repair was done correctly, the shouldn’t come back. I would bring the car back to him and let him fix it. It sounds like he missed diagnostics in the first place.
Exactly my thought. Rather do a full timing job with a complete kit than just replacing 3-4 components. I am currently doing it on my C250 and changed all rails/guides, the lower bracket and both timing & balance shaft chains. Both guide rails can be removed once you take the lower timing cover off. It takes some work, but totally doable.
