We need a blur sequel. Blur was the best combat racing game I have ever played. So so so underrated...

There was a planned sequal, there is some footage of it but it's as barren as a pre-alpha game (Just an Audi R8 driving arround, no powerups or anthing)
Why it was cancelled? No idea, but it will never be made I am afraid.

Yeap, it is totally doable with current tech, it requires gearbox made for this and automatic switching of direction in order to not have jump. With electric engine it would be even easier.

Both Rollcage 1 & 2 were also on PC (playing it in HD before it was even possible on consoles, with GPU acceleration) and there's more - the original dev made an updated versions you can download for free. Rollcage Redux and Rollcage Extreme. Save dev that who also made Grip.

@@soap_off I think you might be counting reverse tracks too as they are just scattered into the track selection also. I've counted 19 unique tracks and there are five deathmatch type arenas which need to count for something. This is on the assumption also that all tracks are visible in single player mode and don't require unlocking which I doubt it, seeing they would at least be visible with a LOCKED stamp on them, just as the items have. It's an awesome game, and I'd only be giving it higher praise if I had an X model XBOX or at the least playing on a ps4 (framerate looks rocks solid) Original xbox on the other had can seem pretty rough at times.

    • @NeverduskX

  • @apexazimuth

I didn't see any of the post-early access tracks in your video, and you claim that there are only 6 tracks of note. I'm not sure how to interpret that.
There are 4 different planets in Grip with similar themes, and each planet has 4-5 completely unique tracks, reverse versions (which are not identical to the forward version) aside.

  • @Washeek
    @Washeek 5 років тому +5

WTF was that bullshit with original rollcage having some FBS soundtrack? Rollcage was the game that got me to drumnbass music with it's killer soundtrack and imho from what I've heard on YT, Grip doesn't seem to take it's soundtrack lightly.
Basically in the whole video there are very few valid criticisms of Grip - the ruberbanding and lack of shortcuts, if that is even the case. Many routes in RC worked just like what this guy describes in Grip.

I had some issues with the game just after launch myself, and barely played it, but have since learnt a lot of stuff that isn't well explained in-game, like the built-in boost, which helps a lot. And after the last update with the hovervehicles and new tracks and more music, the game is even better, and I honestly think it matches and even surpasses the old ollcage in many respects. Also, Rollcage 2 atleast had a reset function, that I had to use a lot when I played it, was easy to get stuck there as well.
I get that this is your opinion of the game, and it might be a bit outdated now, but anyone who's interested in the game should view other reviews as well before making a decision.

One of the best games I've played in the last few years. Didn't think a great deal of Rollcage apart from the game looking cool. This game really comes together the more you play it. After a few hours of play everything starts to feel right and you'll wonder why a game like this hasn't come sooner. Focussing just on its weapon based racing, it certainly gets a 9/10 in my book. It's as good as Wipeout Omega, yet so different I could jump from one to the other and feel like im going from one genre to another.

Been playing it for over a year now. Probably my favourite modern sci-fi racer. Most content, best vehicle/environment design, and none of that air drift garbage that most anti-grav racers have.
Only complaint is that opponents are basically brick walls. If one crashes ahead of you, and you make contact, that's the end of it.

Comparing this game to Rollcage is the same problem reviewers have with Anti-Grav racers and Wipeout.

All honestly, im happy that i supported it in Early Access because the outcome of the game is more than i could expected and it doesnt look any bad at all.
With the right tricks in maybe some future updates we might see those destructible objects in a return and Grip simply always plays best in a multiplayer environment - exactly like Rollcage. I havent played it yet after release, but in the early stages it did look very promising to also have a step maybe into active esports, due to all the "open world" changes, that have a good potential of requiring mastered driving skills.
At the end i rather do support all these old brilliant ideas in a rework, than buying some generic AAA Titles that are too scared to try something "new" or reworking something that exists but havent been done in modern games.

    @PhO3NiX96 5 років тому +5

    There are around 20 tracks.
There are probably the best soundtracks with Payday 2 while you are playing.
The graphics at Epic level are pretty much very satisfying.
Most of the tracks are very fun to drive once you figured out the way to race them properly.
You get a new car every 2 levels which take about 5 mins at the beginning and 20 mins in the end.
(Bad point is that there are not enough good looking cars in my opinion while in rollcage, everytime you had a new car it was even sexier than the previous one).
The attacks//jumps//boost//reset systems are well done.
(I'm missing some rollcage stage 2 attacks tho)
Ai level is more than fair, you can only finish the game if you drive very well.
It's easier in the early part of the campaign yeah, but you are supposed to learn the tracks accordingly so it's well made.
The most important part is the multiplayer and car customisation in my opinion for a game like this.
The multiplayer is stable, it's pretty easy to find a match, there are not a lot of lobbies but since it's 10-players lobbies, it's pretty easy to find one with already 6 players or so.
Car customisation really needs improvement though, you can have all the colors (not like Rocket League), you have an insane amount of different tyres, some different rims.
The bad part is for the decals, there are not many and mostly shit ones.
There is only 4 or 5 different color reparts for each car which is not enough.
Yeah I agree with the "open world" argument "you find yourself flying around pretty much often" BUT that's the case if you drive like shit.
Grip isn't the kind of games where you press the throttle during the whole lap, most of the hard tracks require throttle and braking managment if you want to make good laps.
So it's easy to criticize a game when you suck at it.
"Pokemon campaign's is hard, when I attack a fire pokemon with a plant attack, it doesn't die"...
    You got it

We can and we should. If gamedev was a reasonable industry this game would just be
fixed because it has a solid foundation and all the worst problems it has are exactly the
kinds of problems that are fixable after release without huge headaches like having to
re-record voice actors or redoing mocap.
Not criticizing a genre will only attract people that aren't striving for excellence.
Also, as Rollcage came out in '99, I think it's hardly apt to call the developers of
Grip "pioneers". They wanted to recreate a 20 year old game and in part, they
succeeded. That is an accomplishment, but definitely not breaking new ground.

Ok, here's a little response to the above review. some valid criticisms, and some very poor ones. I otherwise liked your review, though it could do with the reviewer not speaking in such a monotone the whole way through. it gets extraordinarily dull.
    a) there aren't 6 tracks: there are 19, excluding the reverse and night versions. and every track can be mirrored. it wasn't hard to count, I only had to open up the game...
    b) the 'Carkour" mode that he disparages so greatly is a tribute to Trackmania and its crazy, largely user-generated tracks where the challenge is often just to get to the finish. the one with the arrows pointing forwards where you're actually supposed to go backwards is a direct reference to the (dev and user) designers of trackmania who would often deliberately sign the racer the wrong way. if you had done a little research on where that mode is coming from, you would understand why it is the way it is instead of becoming so easily confused and frustrated with it.
    c) Rubberbanding isn't as bad as he claims.
    d) you didn't like the arena mode because you figured out you could win easily by destroying barrels rather than attacking the other drivers and decided to do that instead of playing the mode the way it is supposed to? I agree that having things that way is a problem, but if you're not even going to bother trying to do something the way the developers expect you to do because you figured out how to exploit the system, it is not really fair of you to then turn around and say it is too easy, regardless of whether it is or not if you're playing the 'normal' way.
    e) an hour to unlock each new vehicle? I got 8 in about 2-3 hours.
    f) you claim that it doesn't compare to rollcage because the developers made changes which do not work. which changes are those? you did not specify any, so have you even played rollcage since 2001? I certainly haven't. if you're going to compare two games in a review, you should make sure you are familiar with both of them so that you are capable of making a fair comparison. correct me if I'm off-base and you did play it, but as things stand you just come off as someone whose vision is clouded by nostalgia. and no, watching youtube videos about it made by someone else does not count.
for the record, I am not massively enamoured by the game either, though it is quite fun. I would give it 3 to 3.5 on 5, but it's 40 dollars, it's an independent dev team and it's a new(ish) IP in a genre that doesn't get enough attention. support original stuff.

    • @ChrisDavis_Games
      @ChrisDavis_Games  5 років тому +9

      (a) As I said in the video, a lot of those tracks are incredibly similar. A few tweaks to an existing environment doesn't really make something a new track in my book.
      (b) I've played Trackmania and Carkour is garbage by comparison. I don't care if it's a tribute. Doesn't change the fact that it's bad. And I don't tend to do in-depth research on the development history for side modes before commenting on them. It's not like that makes it more fun.
      (c) It is.
      (d) You hit the barrels by accident half the time. It's hardly a high level exploit. I'm not breaking the game. How would I even know what the developers intend me to do or what is "normal?"
      (e) It slows down as you hit the higher levels which is why I said "on average."
      (f) As I said in the video, I have played Rollcage recently and I do describe the changes (more open courses being the main one).

I was follonwing this game since they announced it years ago, will buy it when I'll have money.
But there is a lot of good futuristic racing games that were released recently, especially the EXCELLENT Ballistic NG, a game recreating Wipeout 3, but I acutally find it even more enjoyable to play !
Few months ago I started to play ZeroCar, it's actually in Early Access for 7$ (I think ?) and it's made by someone who worked on Dirt 3 and Dirt Rally, and it's really nice to play for an Alpha version !

I loved playing Rollcage on PC way back when.
I spent a bunch of time with Grip the last couple of days and it actually kind of saddens me.
There's a good foundation here, but it feels like the game wasn't quite finished. Game modes
not being properly explained, jagged geometry in the middle of a course without signposting
and signposted "jumps" crashing you directly into the walls are decidedly unfun but the weird
rubber-banding where especially in the elimination game mode CPU players are literally pushed
before you when you're going max speed is what really breaks this for me.
I spent literally three hours on a single race in campaign tier five because of that crap. And I swear,
the steering just swerves into random directions sometimes, which I think is some assistance feature
you can't switch off that's bugging out.
Unlike you, I'm really enjoying the music selection tho. Hospital was a good choice of label there,
but I'm not sure why there's only music from just one label. One would think this would be an
obvious place to start iterating with DLC and also add some worthwhile features while you're
at it - Jump Up season with Mozey and Upgrade introducing replays and fast race restarts,
    that kinda thing…
But truth be told, I'm kind of baffled that they didn't bring back the old soundtrack as bonus.
Licensing on music as old as that has got to be way cheaper than current stuff…

All those years ago my mate and I would spent hours and hours with Rollcage. That lasted a good few years. As of now we have been playing GRIP for a few years now and then, so we can very much objectively compare the two. GRIP is fun but it falls behind in EVERYTHING!... Rollcage is the superior game by far.....I mean...BY FAAAAR!...the issues you mentioned in the video are just the tip of the iceberg...they give so much more options in GRIP but none of them succeed in making the game more enjoyable than RC. All they had to do was NOT make you feel like your car is made of sugar and bouncy. If I hit turbo power up behind the opponent I want to see them flying off the screen due to my hitting them, if the opponent does the same, vice versa. I want to be able to defeat anyone if I do a clean race (no collisions, no weapon damage received). I want weapons that make a difference, not missing the target they are locked on to 75% of the time. I don't want to find myself in the last position just because I had to reset mid flight after being in the LEAD with a 10 second advantage!!!! And I want to stop hitting invisible walls in the middle of an open road...When a car is standing still as I am approaching I want him blown off after I make impact...NOT come to a sudden stop myself....physics, please!...

GRIP is one of the best playstation games I've ever played. The gameplay is fast and challenging, there's a lot of customization for your car, the graphics are outstanding, and it's just so much fun to play. No game is perfect, so if I had one complaint about GRIP it'd be that the weapons screen actions could be a little more explosive, but I'm nitpicking. If you don't like this game, then you're insane because it's one of the best racers I've played in a long time.

Tricky shortcuts you enjoyed doing are actually hurting long-term gameplay and competitiveness compared to different routes this game have. GRIP had one notable route (the letterbox) like that, but it got closed due to it being too OP, and becoming a meta route everyone would take by default. And meta's are wrong in a combat racing game.
The game has it's more or less serious problems, but that still not gonna help the fact you didn't have a fair share of experience with this game as some of your facts you stated are just totally inaccurate and puts the game in a worse color than it actually is.
You still decided to put on your nostalgia goggles and always refer back to Rollcage, and how good was that. Despite being a spiritual successor, GRIP is it's own IP. Still, nearly everything RC had right, this game also got and just elevated even further. You didn't bother discovering and showing those features tho.
This review is just as bad and inaccurate as it gets. A downvote for that.

I can't agree with this review. I spent dozens of hours playing both rollcage games as a kid and I'm just as addicted to GRIP if not even more! Many of the harder tracks are incredibly technical and require a lot of focus to navigate quickly, every car feels unique and is fun to drive, the sound design/soundtrack is excellent and the arena deathmatch mode is tons of fun. I bought this game on ps4 and was impressed by how much you can tweak your steering feel: Deadzone, sensitivity, and speed can all be adjusted to a degree that surpasses many FPS games, especially on console. If you feel like the cars in this game are a bit of a handful I have two words of advice: practice your throttle control and TWEAK YOUR STEERING! Its amazing how much of an impact these two factors can have in thus game when you start to really learn the tracks and find a steering feel that suits you

Really good review. I'm playing it at the moment, and to be honest, I feel the exact same as you. Believe it or not, there are actually a couple of other problems that really infuriate me and limit my motivation to continue. For starters, the duels are by far the worst, not only because of the need to drive perfectly as you said, but also because every one of them so far has lasted WAY too long, and they just flat out aren't enjoyable. Furthermore, the sheer amount of times I've had a homing rocket instantly fly into the ground, wall or other collidable object due to the angle or position of my vehicle is utterly absurd. It feels like I've fired more rockets into the ground than at actual opponents. Also, I swear the swarm missile lock-on flat out doesn't work sometimes, due to the amount of times it misses completely even after getting a lock-on. The score-attack race mode is great except for one crippling flaw (outside of the flaws you mentioned). They still allow you to get passive items like boosts, shields etc, but these don't give you any points when used. This means that your ability to earn points will significantly depend on luck, because I have had multiple instances where I want to get an item to attack my opponent with, but four or five times in a row I simply won't get one. I've had to retry these events so many times because of this, and it's infuriating.
Personally, I really liked the battle mode. Yes, I admit it is very easy, but that's probably what made it so fun and made me feel so powerful. It also helps that the track aesthetic and weather effects in the majority of cases is excellent, the cars look awesome and the sense of speed is one of the best I've experienced. The XP system is kind of redundant, as you don't actually earn anything game-changing with each level. They probably could of just had a list of rewards you earn for completing each tournament or tier instead. As for the soundtrack, I personally find it aggresively unremarkable, not because of genre, but rather because every track feels so repetitive and similar, without any distinct melodies, synths or lyrics. At least the sound effects are pretty solid.
In the end, I would love to see a sequel, becuase there is so much good here that is mainly hampered by strange design choices that shouldn't be too difficult to iron out. Hell, I'm sure some of these issues could be fixed with a basic patch (like the available item pickups in score-attack and the spawn location of homing rockets when firing).

you can turn off ruberbanding and putting in as much oponents as your system can handle is optimal way to play this imho
arena is mainly to goof around with friends
there is button that puts you back on track, there was one in rollcage too, but here its much more important, you get used to it
there are no shortcuts, but different routes are optimal for different types of cars
for me bigest minus about game is it feels kinda sterile, i think that a lot could be improved with better sound desing, i can remeber sounds menu did in original rolcage, here its kinda meh.
