Chris was the BEST!!!! A hell of a song writer and vocalist! He was in Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave and his solo work. Such a deep line of work!
This song takes me back to my late teens. Was fortunate enough to see Soundgarden a couple of times back in the day. Audioslave is another band you have to hear.
Chris Cornell’s good friend was Eddie Vedder who is the singer for Pearl Jam. They sang a hit song together called ‘Hunger Strike’. Please react to that music video. Thanks.
I seem to remember reading that Chris Cornell wanted an apocalypse video, appropriate for the lyrics, but he really wanted a HAPPY apocalypse! So they used early 90's CG effects - which were just becoming a thing - to create the exaggerated creepy happy faces.
Chris Cornell's voice is a gift to humanity. He was also the lead singer in Audioslave (that Rage Against the Machine band you mentioned), and their song Like A Stone is one of my favorites of all time, if you feel like reacting to that at some point 😁
This song coming out was a definitive moment in my preadolescent musical development and a lot of grunge elements from Soundgarden (and Alice in Chains) have rooted themselves firmly in my own songwriting. Also, RIP Chris Cornell... A once in a generation talent gone too soon...
I had only heard his name in relation to the very sad passing of his friend, Chester Bennington, but I can see him for myself now. Both so talented! Gone far too soon.
This was one of those times where I thought I didn't know the band and song, then the music starts and I realize I do know it! Having struggled with depression and suicidal ideation, prayer has always worked for me!

I'd recommend "Testify" or "Renegades of Funk" if you're able to see them with the official video (it adds a lot to the meaning they're going for) and if you can't get an official video through UA-cam a lot of people begin with "Bulls on Parade," which was their first big single that came out a year or two before Blackhole Sun.

Having lived in Seattle for more than 40 yrs now, I hang my head in shame that I never saw any of the big Seattle bands when they were up and comers. I only saw Soundgarden perform 3 songs before an American football game. Another Seattle biggie was Alice in Chains...I saw them play 3 songs at halftime of a football game. I was fortunate enough to see Chris do a full set about 6 months before he passed. I saw him perform with Temple of the Dog. RIP, Chris. No one sings like you anymore. ❤❤
I’ve been fighting with depression for decades, and it was so heartbreaking when I heard that Chris Cornell had died from suicide, because I was such a huge fan of his solo work and Soundgarden, too. Also, I think someone else mentioned that some people from Soundgarden, and some people from Pearl Jam, formed a band called Temple of the Dog, and then put out an album, which I think you’d like.
There does seem to be an unfortunate trend in your musical journey. A lot of lead singers that died way too young. Most of the bands I listened to in high school are gone now because of that very reason.
There's a thing called the 27 year curse or the 27 Club - just an INSANE list of musicians that went out at 27 (Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Amy Winehouse, etc etc etc etc etc). Chris Cornell just about doubled it, so....that's at least something?

Soundgarden was a long-time Seattle hard rock band that became known for pioneering “Alternative/Grunge” music along with Pearl Jam and Nirvana, although most of them would consider themselves just to be hard rock bands. Their lead guitarist and drummer recently recorded an album with the bassist from Nirvana and several different singers called “3rd Secret.” Chris later formed Audioslave with the musicians from Rage Against the Machine. He also sang the song “You know My Name” for the James Bond movie “Casino Royale.”
The bands usually created by a company are usually pop bands. Rock bands have always been created in the Untied States organically. Usually it's two school mates that become friends and get other guys to form a band.
Together with "Black" from Pearl Jam this song is my favorite. I avoid this song when I am depressed, but when I am fine I can shed tears without killing myself. It is so beautiful.
Now that you've heard the song, seen the video, and know a few things about the band, please go watch Norah Jones' version which was performed less than a week after Chris died on the very stage they performed their last show together as a band. It may one of the greatest tributes to a friend I have ever heard.
There is a sculpture called Black Hole Sun at the Asian art museum and an art installation called The Sound Garden at the NOAA station that plays music with the wind in Seattle and the band is from there, so I'm guessing that is where the names come from.
I learned all kinds of stuff with You today about the band that I did not know about the band. Thanks for teaching me something new about the band on the learning music journey.

Chris Cornell seemed to be one of those guys that was universally respected by the other big grunge bands from Seattle, either from a musician's standpoint or directly having friendships with members of those other bands or their management. He had one of best voices in rock history and seemed to be an unselfish worker when it came to making music. Definitely look into his hits with Temple of the Dog and Audioslave! He was a true legend to the genre of rock and seemed earnest in trying to elevate those around him.
I saw Soundgarden perform in 1996 at Lollapalooza in Vermont. Also saw Ramones and Metallica that day. Chris did Black Hole Sun by himself, which was nice as it was constantly on the radio and MTV at that time.
Towards the end, the band he had formed in the 2000s was Audioslave. I admit I don’t know that much of their stuff, but “I am the Highway” and “Show Me how to Live” are great songs to check out.

The name "Soundgarden" refers to a public sculpture here in Seattle (Soundgarden's home town) at Sand Point which is made of dangling things that make a musical sound when the wind blows. Actually, "Black Hole Sun" is also a sculpture in Seattle in Volunteer Park.
Did You know? Soundgardens song superunknown was used as a soundtrack on the Video Game Road Rash the CD version on PC(personal computer), Sega CD, Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, Panasonic/Goldstar 3DO, Amiga. Also a Music Video that jams on that Video Game Soundtrack Paw - Jessie. The Music videos are in the Video Game Options too.
@@DianeJennings Your Welcome, Diane! It's a really popular motorcycle racing game. I have all the game systems I have collected over the years except a amiga. You can play it on the computer, games consoles, or emulate it on phone/tablet/laptop.
Definitely not just a product of a corporate think-tank. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign a major record deal though. They would have been the face of grunge if their early stuff wasn't so incredibly heavy that it just couldn't possibly cross over into mainstream. Superunknown is still quite dark and brooding as well, but there's significantly more pop sensibility to it and songs like "Black Hole Sun" coupled with multiple issues surrounding other grunge bands at the time propelled them into the spotlight as the biggest name of the genre left standing in '94. As noted in the quote you read, Cornell wasn't particularly happy with that however and saw the superficial nature of it all for what it really was.
Cornell was one of the breakout front an and singers of the area that I now live in, the PNW, Seattle was the scene he was in part born in. I still remember the night the news came across that he died(by his own hand as it was later reported). I still remember him just showing up on the local talk show The Men's Room. Not because he was promoting a new album, or an ongoing tour, or really anything else. He literally was just in the area and wanted to sit down and "talk to the guys". Guys that he got to know over the years and wanted to spend time with. That was like a month before his dose was publicised and all of Seattle went through a "Black Day" (I was there that night. Somber puts it lightly to say the least). I still remember trying to verify that he actually died, then how he died, then processing it, because it pissed he off, given I at an early age also tried to off myself and knew what that process was (for me at least) like. The article that I, in fairness, hastily wrote, is still out there explaining most of this; I just don't know if it's appropriate to post it here even if I can. Short story being, it never had to happen. He said himself, ON STAGE, "I feel sorry for the next show", and NO ONE PICKED UP ON THAT. Pretty sure at 10 I had less signs than that, and had my younger brother hadn't Runa cross me I might not be here to say as much. I apologize. Didn't mean to get into a rant. It s a good song, one I've performed quite a few times. Never actually saw the music video though, that was... interesting to say the least. Glad you enjoyed it.
They're One of the bands that was from Seattle during the grunge era. Nirvana was probably the first group. The list include stone temple pilots, alice in chains, pearl jam, foo fighters, and mother love bone. The stone pilots pretty penny is a must listen, too
Really enjoyed this video. Have no expectations or experience with grunge, so this was very enjoyable. I agree that the video production values were very high for the times.
Today is Good Memory Day. The First game the comes to mind is the light up memory game simon says. Card match games and some other board games are fun too.
One of my favorite songs featured Chris Cornel, and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam in a band called "Temple Of The Dog". The song title was "Hunger Strike".
Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the first two Seattle bands that gained prominence at the start of the 1990s, although in 1990 they were originally advertised as "metal bands" before the "grunge" label was assigned following the success of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were light years beyond those other grunge bands in terms of talent and musicianship, however. I felt that the bands that followed the example of Nirvana and Pearl Jam favored raw emotional authenticity at the expense of musical skill.
Ummm, the latter part of this comment is absolute garbage. Nirvana played a style that was FAR from less talented, but only more RAW. Think of the genius of John Lennon playing his grunge-type stuff - 30 years before it was called that. And Neil Young guitar styling in order to create tension. Some people don't really understand music and say foolish things. Kurt Cobain had a much higher musical genius than his contemporaries - just like Lennon, and Lennon influenced him the most - and Cornell as well as a thousand other legends. If you really want to learn deep musical analysis and about particular artists you might go to Rick Beato's channel and do a search on just about anything. He has also interviewed many icons/ superstars/ legends of rock to get it right.
@@mick-i3y Dude, even Jerry Cantrell said that Cobain was a terrible guitar player. He was a great poet and lyricist, but his musicianship sounded like he was dragging his guitar across broken glass.
@@44excalibur i was never a fan of pearl jam or nirvana, but i would not say they were lacking in skill.. i mean kurt even asked j mascis (also known as "the godfather of grunge") to join nirvana due to his skills on guitar and drums, luckily J said no and is still playing with the original dinosaur jr line-up + soon to release another solo album. and krist has often been seen in pictures wearing his dinosaur jr shirt which is purple with a cows head on it. pearl jam? well they had members from their previous band green river (which split up and became mudhoney and pearl jam), and it seems like mainstream aspirations were pearl jams reason to form the band in the first place since the other members of green river didnt want that mainstream sound.. both dinosaur jr and green river/mudhoney have had a bigger impact on other musicians than soundgarden and alice in chains.
If you think these Grunge bands weren't technically skilled, listen to Rick Beato's analysis of their various songs. He absolutely gushes on about their expertise, and you frequently hear his famous, "I mean, who DOES that?" about the 90's Grunge bands (and 90s bands more generally).
Agreed, high production value in the Black Hole Sun video. I would recommend another video with a lot of video tricks, "Wild" by Royal Teeth. You have to watch it several times to catch everything that's going on in the video.
My favorite Soundgarden song! I grew up in the 80s with MTV so we were used to crazy videos, doesn't affect how I hear the music, but for some it can distract from the incredible music & vocals. Amazing song.
Honestly, it's videos like this one that made me just not watch videos for 90s bands. I (personally) am one of those people you mention who finds them just so goofy that they take away from the amazing music. This video is so typically 90s! The only videos that I really like from that era are Tool's weird ones by Adam, but I avoid them as well at first, because they're just so distracting! Adam's little art projects with no obvious connection to the songs!
There was a park in the middle of downtown Seattle where there were chimes and an assortment of musical paraphernalia that was known as the Soundgarden.
Consequently, the band nomeansno that they opened for was just unbelievably good, one of the first times i'd ever heard math rock and punk fused well, their album Wrong is still living in my brain totally rent free...

Soundgarden was an amazing band; Chris Cornell was a rock singer beyond the next level. Check out Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog where he and Eddy Vedder basically do a killer rock duet.
Soundgarden was not a factory band they were the genuine article! They formed from various other bands in the Seattle area and played the Seattle music scene/clubs for years before their first commercial hit! That video/song was made after their second commercial album became a hit. Thats why the look of the band and the production value of the video was so good.
Up there with Faith No More, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Mudhoney, Ministry, Killing Joke, Pearl Jam, Helmet, Primus, Godflesh, Tad, Swans, Melvins....the list goes on.

It's good to hear you are coming to visit us here in Chicago. Make sure to stop and have a meal at Ed Debevic's for some real Chicago hospitality.
Saw Chewie pop up in the video for a few seconds. Give Him some treats, teddy's, cuddles, walks, and good naps to make his weekend joyful.
Chris Cornell was in several bands, Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog, to name a few of the best known bands. He was a very talented man.
RIP Chris Cornell, I think one of the best voices in rock.
Towards the end, the band he had formed in the 2000s was Audioslave. I admit I don’t know that much of their stuff, but “I am the Highway” and “Show Me how to Live” are great songs to check out.
You styled the studio up real good with the lights. I like the Pink and Turquoise blue background colors. It looks good with Your UA-cam award in red and white. Your good vibes neon is great Happy words for the universe. Also like the Irish Rainbow goes good with a pot of gold. Your are Very Talented at Stylin everything to look good.
I miss Chris’ singing. He is the true voice of my generation, GenX
I remember recording this video off of MTV back then. Got to love that 90's era CGI.
I did not know that! Great information, Rickey
@@DianeJennings Your Welcome, Diane! It's a really popular motorcycle racing game. I have all the game systems I have collected over the years except a amiga. You can play it on the computer, games consoles, or emulate it on phone/tablet/laptop.
Chicago is my city!! I live in Nashville now but grew up in Chicago and hope you have an amazing time!!!
So cool! Thank you. I’m so excited as it’s one I’ve seen a lot on TV shows and movies.
The stone pilots pretty penny is a must listen, too
This was a big, big video in the 90s. It was definitely a benchmark of a particular era in time.
Really enjoyed this video. Have no expectations or experience with grunge, so this was very enjoyable. I agree that the video production values were very high for the times.
Glad you enjoyed it!
One of the greatest gigs I've ever been to was Chris Cornell in the Olympia in Dublin in 2012. The closest I've ever been to a religious experience.
Today is Good Memory Day. The First game the comes to mind is the light up memory game simon says. Card match games and some other board games are fun too.
Chris Cornell on lead vocals Kym Thayle on lead guitar Matt Cameron on drums and as you see they had a couple bassists.
@@Bramble451 Some of them were, like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, but Nirvana and Pearl Jam were amateurish.
Agreed, high production value in the Black Hole Sun video. I would recommend another video with a lot of video tricks, "Wild" by Royal Teeth. You have to watch it several times to catch everything that's going on in the video.
My goodness this young woman is certainly quite extraordinary!!!
This was one of my favorite bands. I'm sad that for some reason I didn't get notified about this post! Just happened upon it.
@@Bramble451 That's fair.
Try also listening to Soundgardens songs Rusty Cage, Outshined, Spoonman. The music videos are good and a trip too.
There was a park in the middle of downtown Seattle where there were chimes and an assortment of musical paraphernalia that was known as the Soundgarden.
You definitely should check out more stuff from the band. They had a lot of great songs throughout the 90’s
Consequently, the band nomeansno that they opened for was just unbelievably good, one of the first times i'd ever heard math rock and punk fused well, their album Wrong is still living in my brain totally rent free...
Today is Popcorn Day so Many Good Ways to make Popcorn. Butter is classic for the theatre experience. Caramel, Cheese, Chocolate on Popcorn are also good toppings.

@@DianeJennings 🍿Theatre butter is a all time fav that sells the most.
I agree with you with the philosophy on when life gets very difficult; its a good outlook.
You agree that people should do heroin and rack up a ton of debt if they’re depressed? Heh. Stupidest thing I’ve heard in a long time.
Up there with Faith No More, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Mudhoney, Ministry, Killing Joke, Pearl Jam, Helmet, Primus, Godflesh, Tad, Swans, Melvins....the list goes on.
She should do "Searching with my good eye closed" next.
